Experience The Damned Thing by Ambrose Bierce; a classic American horror story first published in 1893. This eerie tale unfolds through a coroner's inquest, diary entries, and witness testimony, all circling around a terrifying creature that cannot be seen. Bierce was one of the earliest writers to explore the idea of an invisible monster, long before it became a staple of modern horror. The Damned Thing originally appeared in Town Topics in 1893 and later in Bierce's collection In the Midst of Life. Its documentary style, dry wit, and slow‑building dread make it one of his most memorable supernatural works. Settle in, get comfortable, and enjoy this unsettling classic from one of America's sharpest - and strangest - writers ❤️ https://open.spotify.com/show/1dac5HA4oPg55A06JDXUQITools used: Presonus Studio One M7, Motionleap, Movavi, and Canva Protags:the damned thing, ambrose bierce, ambrose bierce horror, classic horror story, classic horror reading, horror audiobook, creepy audiobook, invisible monster story, 19th century horror, american gothic literature, public domain horror, classic short story reading, quiet horror, cozy horror reading, atmospheric reading, soft spoken reading, bedtime horror story, classic literature audiobook, supernatural short story, eerie story reading, horror narration, vintage horror tale, weird fiction classic, unsettling short story, horror story full reading

Before we dive into today's story, I want to start a new little feature called the Word for the Week. Each week, we'll have a definition from the Devil's Lexicographer himself – Ambrose Bierce. Over the course of 30 years, Bierce nearly weekly wrote a cynical definition of a common word, sometimes consisting of poems, which he sold to various newspapers and periodicals. After 30 years, he collected all of these into one volume which came to be called The Devil's Dictionary. In keeping with the spirit of its creation, we'll hear one of his jocular definitions before we begin today's show. So, the Word for the Week is Infancy, and here to read it is Ambrose Bierce himself: INFANCY, n. The period of our lives when, according to Wordsworth, "Heaven lies about us." The world begins lying about us pretty soon afterward. Thank you Mr. Bierce. And now, Michael Strogoff, Part 8 of 9, by Jules Verne. A man stands on a railway bridge. Orders pass along the line; the river says nothing. A watch ticks, a breath stalls, and time begins to misbehave. Memory intrudes, desire bargains, and the world narrows to rope, water, distance. No fanfare; only procedure—and a mind trying to outrun it. Follow the story to its far edge. First published in 1890; collected in *Tales of Soldiers and Civilians* (1891). Text: “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842–c. 1914), American author, journalist, and Civil War veteran. Welcome to Episode 244! In years past, the cooler temps and changing leaves were indicators that the year was winding down. This year, we also have THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: From Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce as a gauge. After this episode, we have only three more stories left to read – can you believe it? (We can guess the mixed responses to this question! haha.) We both enjoyed “The Moonlit Road” by Ambrose Bierce, which we discuss in this episode. Other books we've read and talk about include A HOUSE WITH GOOD BONES by T. Kingfisher, 107 DAYS by Kamala Harris, SUNNY SIDE UP by Katie Sturino, MARGARET FULLER: Collected Writings edited by Brigitte Bailey, Leslie Eckel, and Megan Marshall, and DEATH AT THE WHITE HART by Chris Chibnall. In Biblio Adventures, Emily recaps some of the bookish highlights from her vacation on Cape Cod, including BOOKSTORES (Provincetown Bookshop, Tim's Used Books, and Titcomb's Bookshop), LIBRARIES (Provincetown Public Library, the Sturgis Library, Eldridge Public Library and the South Chatham Library), and a bunch of LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES, including a charming mosaic #LFL. Chris spent a day working in the Barnard College Archives and then met a friend for a delicious dinner at Osteria Accademia, a book-lined restaurant on the Upper West Side. Afterwards, she headed to Grand Central to catch a train home to Connecticut and experienced the building's power outage, which made her worry about Dementors and rats. Last but not least, we are thrilled to welcome back OUR MYSTERY MAN, John Valeri for his 14th guest appearance. John joined us to discuss two ghost stories that are on our Ghost Stories Bingo card: “The Mask of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe and “The Canterville Ghost” by Oscar Wilde. He also drops a few reading recommendations because it wouldn't be a proper visit from Our Mystery Man without them. Happy Listening and Happy Reading! https://www.bookcougars.com/blog-1/2025/episode244

I'll share a short story that has been described as "one of the most famous and frequently anthologized stories in American literature" – it's “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by the legendary Ambrose Bierce, from 1890. I have a classic creepypasta from 2016 that many people mistakenly believe is a true story because it is so well written. It's “The Strange Case of Edmonson Kentucky” by Joe Terrell. But first, it's a short story of fiction as told by one of the hardest-working writers I know, as she is always posting new stories on Facebook: Christina Skelton. What happens when politics becomes performance and politicians become influencers? In today's Part 2 episode, former Marine and NYT bestselling author Elliot Ackerman joins Ryan to talk about the idea that “everything's a racket,” the collapse of institutional trust, and why restraint used to define real leadership. They talk about how cancel culture morphed into shamelessness as a superpower, why we might be living in a post-shame society, Ambrose Bierce's wild literary exit, and why modern media feels more like professional wrestling than journalism.Elliot Ackerman is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels 2054, 2034, Halcyon, Red Dress in Black and White, Waiting for Eden, Dark at the Crossing, and Green on Blue, as well as the memoirs The Fifth Act: America's End in Afghanistan and Places and Names: On War, Revolution, and Returning. Elliot's books have been nominated for the National Book Award, the Andrew Carnegie Medal in both fiction and nonfiction, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, among others. He is a contributing writer at The Atlantic, a Senior Fellow at Yale's Jackson School of Global Affairs, and a veteran of the Marine Corps and CIA special operations, having served five tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he received the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for Valor, and the Purple Heart. Welcome to Episode 238 which features an Author Spotlight with the wonderfully creepy Clare Beams! To clarify: it's her work that's creepy, in a good way. As you'll hear in the interview, Clare is lovely, smart, feminist, and fun. We both enjoyed her latest book, THE GARDEN, which is part historical fiction, part ghost story, and part pregnancy horror story all wrapped up in a novel about a woman who finds herself in a place she never imagined with results that . . . well, you'll have to read it yourself to find out. We also talk about what we're currently reading. Chris is enjoying a re-read of SUMMER ON THE LAKES, IN 1843 by Margaret Fuller and Emily is relishing BUCKEYE by Patrick Ryan (pubs on 9/2) Those of you who've been reading along with us in the PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: From Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce will be happy to hear we did our homework. We discuss two stories from the collection: “Thrawn Janet” by Robert Louis Stevenson and “The Open Door” by Margaret Oliphant. In #BiblioAdventures, Emily recaps recent writing workshops she has attended, one with Shuly Cawood and the other with Betsy Lerner. Chris watched the 1997 mini-series adaptation of Stephen King's 1979 novel, THE SHINING, which she compares to the 1980 movie adaptation. Spoiler alert: the novel is best. 1082. Copy editor Jim Norrena joins us this week for a conversation about Ambrose Bierce, his famous "Devil's Dictionary," and his darkly funny take on the world. We look at Bierce's fascinating (and tragic) life, his legendary wordplay, and his mysterious disappearance in Mexico. Plus, we share our favorite biting definitions and quirky facts about his life. We'd love to have coffee with him, but we'd never forget that he was also a feared literary critic! Jim Norrena, MFA, has been writing and editing for more than thirty-five years. He's the founder and principal editor at TypoSuction.com, an independent editing/writing service. He taught grammar and copyediting intensives and professional proofreading workshops at Media Alliance and served as events coordinator for Bay Area Editors' Forum (BAEF).
