Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Steve Goold…a.k.a the “Steve” of Steve's Donut. Steve tells the story of working with Kris (BFSD owner) and how the donut came to be before breaking down the top 5 drumming moments that shaped his playing. Steve has recorded and/or toured with countless big hitters such as Sara Bareilles, Matt Kearney, Owl City, Ben Rector, Cory Wong and many more. His respect for the "song" and crafting the perfect drum part is very evident in the choices he made for this episode. I gained a lot and I hope you will too. You can find links to all the songs discussed on the show in The Podcast section for this episode at www.bigfatsnaredrum.com. Follow us on Instagram / Facebook/ Twitter. This episode is also sponsored by Waves Audio. This podcast would take me soooo much longer to edit if it wasn't for the Waves Vocal Rider plugin. It "rides" the fader in real-time and keeps both my and my guest's audio at a consistent level without the need to overcompress. I also use an endless of amount of their plugins for my musical recordings such as Abbey Road Saturator, CLA Drums, the SSL Channel, and many more. Steve Goold has played for Owl City, Sara Bareilles, Ben Rector, Mat Kearney, Paul Baloche and many others. He emphasizes the feel of everything he plays over the specifics of what he's playing. Having said that, Steve still approaches the drums with a scientific focus on playing parts he believes best compliments songs, having led him to tour the world playing on the biggest stages and in front of millions on late night talk shows. Steve is also the founder of thedrumlibrary.com, an education website, much like 180drums.com, that is focused on providing students access to his personal, unique, insights on what it means to play drums in order to make a living doing so.
Steve Goold is known to the public as an internationally touring, session drummer for the likes of: Sara Bareilles, Ben Rector, Paul Baloche, Sara Groves, Owl City (before my time with them) Mat Kearney, Joel Hanson, The Honeydogs, Go Fish, The Blenders and the list goes on…. To me, Steve is known as a friend of wisdom and depth. I feel like we could start talking about fart densities and somehow he could tie it in to your purpose in life. In our conversation we talk about the things that you don’t get to see on social media. The real reason he was in town last month, the death of his father this year, the eventual death of YOUR father someday, why musicians that play together form a bond like no other vocation, and how his project Masss came to be. Stick around to the end of the episode and hear Masss’ newest single IN FULL. Recording Location: Town Hall Brewery, Minneapolis, MN Drinks: A flight of Barrel Aged Belgian Beers (one of them, I spilt on my pants during our convo) I’m so thankful that I don’t have to deal with sponsors. Otherwise, I would have to tell you to visit Guinness’ website HERE and ask you to hire Narrate Films for your next video/film/music-video/wedding photography/any photography needs and to visit their website HERE. Whew… so thankful I don’t need to deal with that crap. For More Info Visit: www.thecuriouspod.com
In Episode 14, we sit down with Steve Goold. Steve is a professional drummer that has toured the world with some of biggest names in the industry. Here's a snippet from Steve's Bio: I play drums professionally: Live, in studios, and at clinics. I currently work a lot for Sara Bareilles and Ben Rector, and occasionally with Paul Baloche and Sara Groves. In the past I've worked for Owl City, Joel Hanson, the Honeydogs, Go Fish, the Blenders, and a whole bunch of others. I'm also the Head Musical Director at Christ's Church of the Valley in Phoenix AZ, where I live with my wife and daughters. This Drumhead Magazine article explains a little bit about my music career, and this video accurately captures how I feel about my life. As a musician I currently endorse Risen Drums, Paiste Cymbals, Vic Firth sticks, Remo Percussion, Canopus snare drums, Alclair Audio, and Mono Cases. As a human being I endorse foosball, disc golf, reading the Bible, reading books generally, single malt scotch, being kind and/or positive, longboarding, and asian food.We go deep with Steve and talk about all things drums, music, touring, life and everything in between. We loved the heart behind what he's doing and the passion that he has for music in general. It's refreshing to see someone at the top, that's playing awesome gigs, to be such a humble, mild-mannered guy and a great hang.
