Hey guys—so I've been deep into working on the second book, which has me going back through a bunch of the older conversations. One that really stood out again was with Steve Goold. If you don't know, Steve is actually the Steve of Steve's Donut. He's also played with Sara Bareilles, Owl City, Mat Kearney, and Scary Pockets, to name a few. But more than the resume, I was reminded how insightful he is. There's this part where he talks about there being no neutral notes—like, every note carries weight, it's never just filler. That idea has been rattling around in my head ever since I revisited the chat. Steve just put out his first release under his own name, a live recording called Solo Improvisations On Drumset, and you can watch the whole thing on YouTube HERE. “I've got a hundred million reasons to walk away,But baby I just need one good one to stay.” Fuck that noise. I've got a billion trillion reasons to stay my ass the fuck right here, but give me one good reason and I'll go. Is it possible for a big sad to turn into a hypomanic episode? How can I tell if what I'm feeling is an actual feeling or just a stage in a bipolar cycle? Do I sound crazy? Am I being insane right now? Am I not near as level as I thought? I wanna end this loop. If I mess my life up on a whim, at least the groundhog reboot will finally stop. I think the song could be Greenlight by Hayley Kiyoko. Honestly, there are so many Owl City songs that would work quite well. I fell in love with his music because escapism is the whole thing, ya know? I should make a playlist! I'm gonna make a playlist. That'll keep me occupied at work. Oh, yay. *pom poms*

In a world where women are told to have it all, do it all, and be it all, the reality they face while actually trying to do these things is far more complex. The pay gap looms large – over the span of a career, it takes 132 years to close – while the confidence gap, the leadership gap, and the broken rung in the corporate ladder persist.Erica Anderson Rooney has faced all these challenges intimately, personally, and head-on as she's climbed the ranks to the C-suite while raising a family. But wait – there's more.Erica grew up as the daughter of parents who divorced when she was very young. Both were loving parents, and they lived close to each other so that she could spend half the week with her dad and half the week with her mom.Having to live in two different households, each with different expectations, rules, and ways of doing things, led Erica to become a chameleon and put other people first in order to get by as smoothly as possible and avoid conflict and friction.Three of her values were learned from her mom. Go to school and get good grades so you can have a good-paying job and financial independence was the first. This led to the second, which was to never be in a situation where you have to depend on a man – a fitting lesson given the circumstances. The third was to be a good person, be kind, be generous, and always show up and do the right thing. These values carried Erica through childhood and college, into her first career, and into her marriage. Everything seemed fine, because of a fourth lesson she had learned – but that was the problem, as Fine is a 4-Letter Word.See, the fourth lesson was that alcohol solves a lot of problems, whether it makes you feel happier, helps you forget why you're sad, or loosens your inhibitions. Or helps you “ease up” when trying to be a chameleon has you grinding against your authentic self.By dulling the edge, Erica missed that she wasn't in touch with her authenticity. She'd go to a concert and say “this is great” in order to please whomever invited her, even if she hated the music. But sometimes, she would have a glass of wine to cope with houseguests she didn't want to deal with. A glass would turn into two, then three – then a whole bottle. She'd wake up not knowing what happened or what she said, or sensing tension with her husband and not even knowing what they had fought about the night before. In a moment, when you meet Erica, you'll hear about the path to claiming her power to allow her authenticity to come through.Erica's hype song is "Owl City" by Verge ft. On today's episode, we chat with two time guest, Joseph O' Brien! Joseph O'Brien is a Singer/Songwriter based out of Nashville, TN. Growing up with two musical parents, O'Brien had music running through his blood from day one. At age 12, he taught himself how to play the piano and realized that is where his passion was. O'Brien says, “I've always gravitated towards performance. It's one of those unexplainable drives that God puts in you. Music was one of those few things that it didn't seem like a burden to learn and grow in.” His talent took him to the quarter finals of “America's Got Talent” and CCM legend, TobyMac took notice as well, signing him to his Gotee label. O'Brien's hope is to write songs that inspire others, especially his own generation to be bold for Christ and to dig deeper into their own faith. His sound has been described by others to resemble For King and Country and Owl City, who he counts as some of his inspiration. As O'Brien releases his brand new music, he is excited to continue to encourage through his music and faith. His latest, single, ‘Something Different', and ‘Like that You love me' is out now! josephobrienmusic.com @jbobrienmusic christianmusicguys.com @christianmusicguys --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christianmusicguys/message

Don't get the Puth. Dont get the Griffin either.  I'm bad at descriptions.  Also, the synth that Owl City used at the end of that song is THEE synth. Like that is the radiate synth. He used the same one at the end of that song to create the ringtone.

Rock That Doesn't Roll: The Story of Christian Music

The late 90s and early aughts were a banner time for a really specific type of rock band - the are-they-or-aren't-they a Christian band, band. Sixpence None the Richer. Creed. Evanescence. Lifehouse. Owl City. Paramore. They all had different sounds, but they left listeners wondering: are they - or aren't they - “Christian music?” This week on Rock that Doesn't Roll: does an artist who identifies as Christian have to brand their music as such? With insight from David Dark (author, We Become What We Normalize), hosts Andrew Gill (producer, Sound Opinions) and Leah Payne (author, God Gave Rock & Roll to You) follow the story of Jon Foreman, a pastor's kid from Carlsbad, California whose band Switchfoot created songs that resonated with youth group kids and climbed the Top 40 charts. Were they, or were they not, a Christian band? We explore efforts to rethink Christian music, and how mainstream superstars U2 led the way for bands like Switchfoot to wrestle with the marketing category of “Christian” - and find an enduring connection with their fans along the way. Barry and Abigail discuss We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. by Jason Mraz and sample Lucky Strikes, Echoes of Sacrificial Voices, and Basking In the Glow from Petty Thieves Brewing Co. in Charlotte, North Carolina. We want to thank Barry's college and medical school colleague, Dr. Michael McCrohan, for helping us obtain this fabulous beer, and for his “contribution to the arts.” Lucky Strikes is a collaboration with Cabarrus Brewing Co in Concord, North Carolina. The names of the beers we sampled today reminded Abigail of the names of the beers we sampled at Burial Beer Company in Asheville, North Carolina: Prophetmaker, A Canvas of Fragmented Memoirs, A Space For Sacrilege, and Of A Fading Season. Listen to our full episode at Burial, Consumers of the Barley (The Raconteurs and Burial Beer Co.). We make a lot of comparisons to Andy Grammer by Andy Grammer, which we reviewed in our episode Mind Your Grammer (Andy Grammer and Deadwords Brewing). Watch one of the TikToks Abigail referenced poking fun at artists including “raw audio” in their songs. Your Love is My Drug by Kesha is a great example of this phenomenon. Lucky features Colbie Caillat, whose song I Do appears on our family playlist of favorite love songs from 2011. Abigail's choice on that playlist was The Bird and the Worm by Owl City, and Barry's was Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney. Abigail contends that Butterfly is no more explicit than Swimming In Your Ocean by Crash Test Dummies. Listen to our full discussion of Crash Test Dummies, Pops Shuffled His Feet (Crash Test Dummies and Toll Road Brewing). Details in the Fabric features James Morrison. We shared a little bit of his song Under the Influence. Up next… Four by Blues Traveler Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.
