Episoded 313: Sierra Hull brings a measure of small-town delight and innocence to roots and bluegrass that perfectly compliments her innate gifts and her formal schooling in high level music-making. The mandolinist, songwriter, singer, and band leader has emerged, since her youthful debut in 2008, as a star of her field and an inspiring figure in Americana. Her four IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year awards are part of the story. But so is her composing, her collaborating and her records. The first in five years - and her first independent release - is A Tip Toe High Wire, coming March 7. This episode complements a bio-oriented show in 2018, emphasizing Hull's recent work with Béla Fleck, Cory Wong and others, and of course the thought behind and production of her newest release.  See Craig's show notes at WMOT.org.

We talk about how the Hitmaker voices his progressions—“You hear Nile play a chord progression … and it's that song”—and the role of rhythm guitar in general. Cory delivers his list of best Nile performances, tips for direct guitar sounds, and most surprising Nile collabs.Ever wonder what it would sound like if Nile Rodgers produced David Lee Roth covering Willie Nelson? This time around, we found Wong with his Fearless Flyers pals sticking in one spot, at Cory Wong's Syncopated Summer Camp. The four-day, four-night summit, held in Nashville, brought together ace players like Ariel Posen, Larry Carlton, and Theo Katzman to offer clinics on all things rhythm. Aside from the camp, Wong and his fellow guitar Flyer, Mark Lettieri, both had new releases to celebrate: Lettieri's recent solo record, Can I Tell You Something?, dropped in July, and Wong's Live in London and Starship Syncopation came out in May and July, respectively—plus, the Flyers' new EP was released in February. Both Lettieri and Wong toured us through the guitar gear they brought along for the camp. 00:04:01 石井竜也 - RIVER00:10:09 Guns N' Roses - Nightrain00:13:47 Felt - The Stagnant Pool00:16:51 Ludovico Einaudi - Una Mattina00:19:13 Cory Wong,Tom Misch - Cosmic Sans00:22:13 尤瑞卡TheEureka - 酒神的秘密特工00:28:34 The Stone Roses - Love Spreads00:31:12 Camel - Mystic Queen00:36:26 Dire Straits - Why Worry?00:00:00 尤瑞卡TheEureka - 仍有回响【嘉宾介绍】尤瑞卡TheEureka,「虚无的抵抗者,酒神的秘密特工」。

Keith Urban has spent decades traveling the world and topping global country-music charts, and on this episode of Wong Notes, the country-guitar hero tells host Cory Wong how he conquered the world—and what keeps him chasing new sounds on his 6-string via a new record, High, which releases on September 20.Urban came up as guitarist and singer at the same time, and he details how his playing and singing have always worked as a duet in service of the song: “When I stop singing, [my guitar] wants to say something, and he says it in a different way.” Those traits served him well when he made his move into the American music industry, a story that begins in part with a fateful meeting with a 6-string banjo in a Nashville music store in 1995.It's a different world for working musicians now, and Urban weighs in on the state of radio, social media, and podcasts for modern guitarists, but he still believes in word-of-mouth over the algorithm when it comes to discovering exciting new players. And in case you didn't know, Keith Urban is a total gearhead. He shares his essential budget stomps and admits he's a pedal hound, chasing new sounds week in and week out, but what role does new gear play in his routine? Urban puts it simply: “I'm not chasing tone, I'm pursuing inspiration.”Get 30% off your first year of DistroKid by going here: http://distrokid.com/vip/corywongVisit Keith Urban: https://keithurban.comHit us up: wongnotes@premierguitar.comVisit Cory: https://www.corywongmusic.comVisit Premier Guitar: http://premierguitar.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/wongnotespodIG: https://www.instagram.com/wongnotespodProduced by Jason Shadrick and Cory WongAdditional Editing by Shawn PersingerPresented by DistroKid

This time on Wong Notes, guitar legend Kurt Rosenwinkel joins Cory Wong to go deep on all things jazz. The genre has always been a haven for free-thinkers and adventurers, so it's a little surprising when Rosenwinkel reveals that he's incorporated a Fractal FM9 into his live rig—though it's still working in tandem with a good ol' Fender tube amp.Rosenwinkel divulges the details on his “softer, darker” attack, which combined with his approach to tone—including a fair bit of top-end roll-off—constitutes a big piece of his signature sound. Rosenwinkel's forthcoming live record, The Next Step Band (Live at Smalls 1996), captures this sound in the place that formed it: New York City. Rosenwinkel takes Wong back to the halcyon days of the city's kinetic 1990s “hardcore” bebop and free-jazz scene, where Mitch Borden's legendary Smalls Jazz Club was an artistic hotbed (and crash pad) for players of all stripes.Nowadays, more and more artists are forming their connections online rather in a jazz club. But can TikTok and Instagram replace an all-night jazz joint for up-and-coming players?Tune in, and be sure to check out Kurt's career-spanning new Ultimate Book of Compositions.Listen to the full episode here: https://bit.ly/WongNotesGet 30% off your first year of DistroKid by going here: http://distrokid.com/vip/corywongVisit Kurt Rosenwinkel: https://kurtrosenwinkel.com/Hit us up: wongnotes@premierguitar.comVisit Cory: https://www.corywongmusic.comVisit Premier Guitar: http://premierguitar.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/wongnotespodProduced by Jason Shadrick and Cory WongAdditional Editing by Shawn PersingerPresented by DistroKid

Known for his infectious energy, rhythmic grooves, and boundless creativity, he is not only a solo artist with a dozen studio albums (so far), touring member of the funk group Vulfpeck, full-time member of The Fearless Flyers, but also an accomplished collaborator with greats such as Jon Batiste and Dave Koz, a YouTube variety show host, a podcast host, and more.  In this episode, we discuss his unique approach to music, his influences, and all the details surrounding that night with DMB at MSG including how big of a fan of the band he truly is, and we may have snuck in a little Goose talk too. Cory Wong sits down with indie-rock bandleader Margaret Glaspy for an in-depth dialogue on artistry, celebrity, and the wisdom of Bruce Lee.Glaspy shares how she cut her latest record, Echo The Diamond, live off the floor, with most of the “homework” happening beforehand and studio performances happening in-the-moment. “It really felt like air blew through the studio and then the record was made,” she says. “What you're hearing is mostly what happening.” The songs are like photographs of a particular moment, rather than an essential, unchanging thing; Glaspy says she values the “dying art” of taking risks in music.Glaspy runs down how she and husband Julian Lage work on each other's projects, and highlights one of their key criteria in assessing performances: are you your best guitar player right now? “Would you hire yourself or fire yourself?” poses Glaspy. The conversation turns to Glaspy's rig on the record—she played through a Magic Amps rendition of a black-panel Fender Princeton, plus a Fender Champ combo—before revealing that these days, she's bypassing her tuner pedal and letting the audience hear the process between songs. “Let's not hide what's needed to make this actually go,” she laughs.Wong and Glaspy swap notes on Bruce Lee's winning combo of talent and work ethic (and how one of his quotes inspired Glaspy's record) before finishing with a fascinating philosophical dissection of artistry, pop culture, and celebrity. “The business of celebrity intertwines them in a way that's hard to escape,” says Glaspy, who sees a clash between surface-level fantasy and bone-deep darkness in pop culture.Tune in to the episode to learn all the gems from Echo The Diamond.Listen to the full episode here: https://bit.ly/WongNotesGet 30% off your first year of DistroKid by going here: http://distrokid.com/vip/corywongVisit Margaret Glaspy: https://margaretglaspy.com/Hit us up: wongnotes@premierguitar.comVisit Cory: https://www.corywongmusic.comVisit Premier Guitar: http://premierguitar.comTwitter:

This week on No Simple Road we are super stoked to have Torrin Daniels of Kitchen Dwellers joining us here in the studio! Among the many natural wonders in Montana, Wise River runs for about 30 miles through the Southwestern region of the state, cutting through the mountains and flowing into the Big Hole River. Beyond being a favorite spot for fly fishermen, it remains etched into the topography of the land itself. Two hours away in Bozeman, Kitchen Dwellers equally embody the spirit and soul of their home with a sonic palette as expansive as Montana's vistas. The quartet—Shawn Swain [Mandolin], Torrin Daniels [banjo], Joe Funk [upright bass], and Max Davies [acoustic guitar]—twist bluegrass, folk, and rock through a kaleidoscope of homegrown stories, rich mythology, American west wanderlust, and psychedelic hues. After amassing 5 million-plus streams, selling out shows, and receiving acclaim from Huffington Post, Relix, American Songwriter, and more, the group brings audiences back to Big Sky Country on their third full-length album, Wise River, working with Cory Wong of Vulfpeck as producer, and make sure to check out the new release Kitchen Dwellers - Live At Pine Creek Vol. 2 streaming everywhere you get your music! We had the pleasure of interviewing The Ongoing Concept over Zoom video! We The band — brothers Dawson Scholz [vocals, guitar], Kyle Scholz [vocals, keys, percussion], and Parker Scholz [drums] along with TJ Nichols [vocals, bass], and Andy Crateau [vocals, guitar] — have released their fourth album Again, out via Solid State Records. Not only is this the first taste of new music from the band since 2017 but it also marks the return of the original lineup."'Unwanted Again' was one of our favorites to write and record," states Dawson. "Being fans of bands like Cory Wong, Dirty Loops, Don Broco, and Vulfpeck, we found ourselves incorporating a lot of groovy elements to this album, and this song really showcases that. It was also fun to bounce vocals back between TJ and I. For longtime fans of our band, we added some subtle references to our song 'Unwanted'; not only in the song, but in the music video as well. Being our second single and coming after a heavy hitter like 'Prisoner Again,' I think this song showcases the variety we put into this album."The Ongoing Concept emerged with the now-seminal Saloon back in 2013. On its heels, fan favorite Handmade bowed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums Chart and Top Christian Albums Chart in addition to cracking the Top 30 of the Top Independent Albums Chart. In its wake, Kyle, Parker, and TJ departed, leaving Dawson as the sole original member for Places in 2017. As The Ongoing Concept went dormant, the group's catalog continued to react with listeners as the likes of "Cover Girl" clocked over a million Spotify streams and counting. After a period of quiet, communication mended between Dawson and his brothers Kyle and Parker. Between careers, marriages, and kids, they kicked around the idea of playing together once more."We'd been playing music since we were six-years-old," notes Dawson."We lived and breathed the same band together. It's crazy, because I didn't know my brothers outside of music. Taking a break for a few years, we found who we were as normal people and embraced other interests. It was super healthy for all of us. One day, we were hanging out, and I said, 'You know I've been working on some little skeletons for songs,' and it made sense. The only reason we got back together was because we had our time apart."They self-produced Again and took their time. The Ongoing Concept integrated "lyrics and Easter Eggs" from previous albums into the record's framework, embodying the title quite literally. We want to hear from you!
