A Note for Jacob: Since my second podcast recording with Matt, I am pleased to report that General Admission Seating for the May 5 event is SOLD OUT!! It is a pleasure to welcome actor Matt DeAngelis back to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Matt grew up on showtunes and Boston sports. Matt studied theatre at the University of Southern Maine and The Boston Conservatory before heading down Route 95 to NYC in 2004. In June 2009, Matt got the call to make his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning production of HAIR with Tony Award winner Diane Paulus at the helm. Matt continued with that production, “Across the Atlantic Sea,” to the West End in the role of “Woof” and then launched the first national US Tour of HAIR and was seen back on Broadway in the “Summer of Love” revival of HAIR.Following his time with the hippies, Matt launched the first national tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT as the “Representative from Jingletown”. Matt's cross-country adventures continued in 2014 with the first national tour of ONCE, where he played “Svec” and five instruments. Over the last five years, Matt has been a veteran of almost 2,000 performances. Thankfully, Matt returned home to Broadway (again with Diane Paulus) in the hit musical WAITRESS, where he starred opposite Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, two-time Grammy winner Jason Mraz, and seven-time Grammy nominee and the show's composer, Sara Bareilles. He then toured the country with the WAITRESS National Tour as Earl opposite his real-life wife, Christine Dwyer, as Jenna. Upon returning from the road, Matt was a part of developing the World Premiere of The Secret Life of Bees at The Atlantic Theatre Company, directed by Tony Award winner Sam Gold. He also appeared in Orpheus Descending at Theatre for a New Audience. Matt DeAngelis also started the Janice Jam in memory of his mother, Janice, who passed from metastatic breast cancer in 2022. This annual event channels the magic of Broadway to honor those we've lost, uplift those fighting, and fund critical research. This event serves as a yearly celebration of Janice, her love for theater, and raising money for those affected by metastatic breast cancer. On May 5, 2025, a group of Broadway all-stars will join Matt and Christine for this event. Golden Globe and Oscar-winning actor Ariana DeBose, Tony winner John Gallagher, Jr., Tony-nominated actors Jeremy Jordan and Jenn Colella, Caroline Bowman, Kara Lindsay, Krysta Rodriguez, Omar Jose Cardona, Rachel Potter, and Stark Sands are expected to perform. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Matt DeAngelis previewed the 2025 Janice Jam, revealed this year's music director, and explained how you can support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Producer Michael Roiff returns to Hollywood Gold to discuss how the hit romantic-comedy Waitress became a musical sensation. From the initial pitch in 2007 to its first opening night in 2016, Roiff shares how different theater is compared to film, taking years to find its creative and musical stride. While Roiff was disappointed after opening night in Cambridge, he took the opportunity to revamp the show prior to its Broadway debut, eventually earning four Tony nominations in 2016 with the help of lead, Sara Bareilles. He shares how, unlike film, each show, tour, and cast brought a different experience to the audience, speaking to both the film and the musical's long-lasting legacy. Hosted on Acast. There is a lot that our current world lacks, but peace may be at the top of that list. Jesus held it in such high regard that he actually said, peacemakers will be called children of God. This past Sunday at Storyline's Gathering, we wondered together what He meant by that. The band performed songs by The Eagles, Bruce Hornsby, Rob Thomas, and Sara Bareilles.

The film also stars Charity Angél Dawson, Caitlin Houlahan, Drew Gehling, Christopher Fitzgerald, and Dakin Matthews. We ranked 19 of the songs from the 2016 Broadway cast recording, as well as picked our favorite lines, characters, performers, and scenes. Enjoy!
Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is Toto, by A.J. Hackwith, which is a look at the Wizard of Oz story from the perspective of Toto the dog. He tells us, "I was mostly a Good Dog until they sold me out to animal control, okay?" which sounds like a take we'd like to hear.Terri's random recommendation this week is a filmed version of a stage production of Waitress, starring Sara Bareilles and streaming on Max. We've talked about the show and the movie before, and Terri found this an enjoyable way to make use of her Max subscription. Mentioned: A song from the show, "She Used to Be Mine," performed by Jeremy Jordan, Jessie Mueller, and the show's creator, Sara Bareilles. In the archives, we checked in on an episode from 2021 on one-star reviews of parenting experiences. Mentioned: "7 Surprisingly Busy Days in the Life of an Experimental Theater Maker" at the New York Times (gift link).Next week's lineup: Lost S2 E11, "The Hunting Party," on Tuesday, March 4A Man on the Inside S1 E6, "Our Man in Sacramento," on Wednesday, March 5Weekly roundup on Thursday, March 6Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

Sara Bareilles broke out as a pop-music star in the late two-thousands. But she's gone on to have a very different kind of career, writing music for Broadway and eventually performing as an actor on stage and on television. At the New Yorker Festival, in 2024, she played her early hit “Gravity,” and spoke with staff writer Rachel Syme about the pressures of fame, aging, and why she prefers working in theatre. “There's so much competition in the music industry. I'm not a competitive person; I don't understand it. It's not that theatre isn't competitive, but there's this feeling—everybody's so happy to be there. Like, ‘We got a show, guys, and we don't know how long it's going to last!' ”
1. Abby shares with Sara the great personal impact Sara's music has made on her life. 2. Sara and Glennon bond over the joy of solitude, the underrated gifts of being heavy-hearted, and the fact that “there are too many things to be worried about at all times” to be lighthearted. 3. When you are in deep stress, do you try to sabotage your job, relationship, etc.? (Before this conversation, Amanda thought it was just her.) 4. How playfulness and joy – connecting to the little kid who grew up into you – are vital to loving yourself. 5. Sara's beautiful journey with medication for depression and anxiety – and how she learned her anxiety often arises from an unexpressed need. About Sara: Sara Bareilles is a Tony Award and Emmy Award nominated actor, and Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter. On Broadway, Sara composed music and lyrics for Waitress, in which she was also the lead. Sara also produced original music and executive produced the musical drama series Little Voice. Foreigner guitarist Bruce Watson was having a better hair day, finished his crisp white shirt with a black jacket (I'd intended to do in kind with mine, but I was rushing and couldn't get my cuffs through my sleeves), and surrounded himself with cool guitars and warm lights. Rockstar! I dig the cut of his jib. Almost as much as I appreciate how accessible, down-to-earth, humble, and lovely he is. Not a likely combination, but oh, so charming. And entertaining! What a great storyteller! Bruce took us through his extraordinary ancestry. The Watsons have been Valley Boys since the 1600s. Not! But they have been in America since then, in LA since the 1890s or so… likewise, his mother's people, from Cork. Great story there - how and why they got here. We got the skinny on where the passion started - The Monkees - Hey Micky - and Creedance- the dream - to be a rockstar - his first band, Eragon, that no one, including me, could say correctly, covering The Eagles and Zeppelin - hysterical day jobs, great stories there, his first big gig touring with Toto's Bobby Kimball, then Patty Smyth with Rod Stewart, then Rod hisself. Bruce, although not a “reader,” was getting lots of session work for film, TV, and commercials, one of which was producing a spot with B.B. King- what a poignant, moving story. Recording with a very young Christina Aguilera, her break out, What a Girl Wants, and just out of the box, Sara Bareilles' Love Song, through Bennett Salvay meeting composer W.G. Snuffy Walden, and giving them just what they needed for their Friday Night Lights, getting the call to fill in for an ill Mick Jones - a temp gig - Bruce was busy, enjoying session work, his home and his family, with no intention of touring - then getting extended… again and again… finally joining Mick and becoming a permanent member of Foreigner. The Rockstar young Bruce dreamt of being realized in full force and boy does he wear it well. A killer player, he's got the hair, the moves, and the clothes, and I got him to tell us where he shops. I wanna hit the stores with him. It's all about how he puts it together. Bruce Watson is all that… and a jumbo bag of Cheetos. Talent, looks, genuine sweetness, and fun. Rockers, please take note… you can reach the pinnacle, look amazing doing it, and still be a mensch. Be like Bruce! Pedal steel guitarist Rich Hinman joins me on the show today. Rich is a really creative player who has definitely spent a great deal of time with the classic steel guitar cannon, but has very much branched out and developed his own style and voice on the instrument. He has a great flair for improvisation, and his tone and touch are really of the highest calibre. Rich is currently a teacher at Berklee College in Boston in the guitar Department, but continues his work in the studio and on the road. He has had recurring stints with artists like Sara Bareilles, Maren Morris, Molly Tuttle, KD Lang, Tanya Tucker, St. Vincent, Josh Ritter and many more. His current project is an amazing band with guitarist Adam Levy. The two of them go way back, and it shows, as their interplay and group improvisations are really incredible. The band is called Rich Hinman Vs Adam Levy and they have a brand new album out called “Fan Favorites” that you should check out. Rich also put out a solo album recently that is more on the ambient side, but full of inspired playing and compositions as well called “Memorial”. Rich is really active on social media which is how I first ran into his playing, and he also has a cool Patreon thing going on with weekly steel guitar lessons, so check out what he's up to over in his world at richhinman.com and if you get a chance to see him and Adam Levy, who are out on tour as we speak, don't miss them. Enjoy my conversation with Rich Hinman! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Chris Feil joins Katey to break down all the premieres announced for festivals in Venice, Toronto and beyond, and go deep on William S. Burroughs's Queer, soon to be a film from Luca Guadagnino. Then, Katey talks to songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who are Emmy-nominated for their Only Murders in the Building original song "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It". They will be in the extremely rare class of EGOT winners if they take home the Emmy — but they have to get past their friend and collaborator Sara Bareilles first. The bingeable comedy series Girls5eva is a silly parody of the music industry. It's about four down-on-their-luck members of a 90s girl group who reunite to stage a comeback, and find that a lot has changed. The show features a stacked cast, including Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell. Girls5Eva recently moved to Netflix and just returned for a new season, so today, we revisit our conversation about the series.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
