Like many of their fans, I discovered Corook's music on TikTok, and I was immediately charmed by the sweetness and humor and directness of their songs. Honestly, as someone who is newer to using TikTok — I only set up my page about a year ago — I've been surprised that many artists who are hugely popular there, with viral videos amassing millions of views, have relatively little exposure in more traditional music media. Which is silly, because there's some awesome shit on there, and as if music needs more arbitrary silos than it already has. Anyway, Corook has been one of my favorite TikTok discoveries and I was delighted when they agreed to get together over Zoom for this interview. Last week, Corook released a great new EP called “How Do I Relate To You?” that includes their latest viral hit “Scooby,” so look for that online now. In the interview we delve into the making of the EP and, as usual, all the important creative milestones leading up to it. We talk about the impact of a Linkin Park DVD their dad brought home, relating to Britney Spears, teaching themself guitar with help from YouTube, obsessing over Sara Bareilles, the piano as a tool for exploratory songwriting, going back to cowboy chords, learning how to go viral and then learning that going viral isn't all it's cracked up to be, collaborating like dads in a garage for their new EP, and more.

I keep noticing something in my work, in my friendships, even in myself: so many people are starving for permission.Permission to rest. To stop performing all the time. To tell the truth.Permission to become stranger, more tender, more sweet. Permission to become more fully themselves. So many of us learned that belonging required us to perform. We perform competence, pleasantness, productivity… We learned to shape-shift and contort ourselves to survive systems that could not fully hold us. And after a while, it's hard to remember who we really are underneath all that adaptation. The conversations I've had this season have each, in their own way, done what singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles calls “widening the road.” My guests' stories make room on the road for different ways of being powerful.  So today, I want to revisit some of those conversations, not just to reflect on what these guests learned about power, but to help you see yourself in their stories too. Because maybe what you need most right now isn't more advice. Maybe you need a little more permission.Listen to the full episode to hear:The common thread of truth about power that all of my guests have discoveredWhy stepping into our real power requires us to name and claim our unique powersHow power calls us to pause and truly witness and honor others and our environments in ways only we canLearn more about Valerie Black:The Change AgencyBecoming Power NewsletterCoachingResources:Ep 2.06 Walking Each Other Home: Power, Elderhood, and Belonging with Shirley ShowalterEp 2.07 Seen, Known, and Valued: Sarabeth Bickerton on Naming Your UniquenessEp 2.08 Arriving in Your Power with Brooke Edwards "Sweet Darkness," David Whyte

A Note from Jacob: Since my conversation with Matt, the 2026 Janice Jam at Sony Hall is OFFICIALLY SOLD OUT!  I am thrilled to welcome back my friend, actor Matt DeAngelis, to Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar for an exclusive conversation!  Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Matt grew up on showtunes and Boston sports. Matt studied theatre at the University of Southern Maine and The Boston Conservatory before heading down Route 95 to NYC in 2004. In June 2009, Matt got the call to make his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning production of HAIR with Tony Award winner Diane Paulus at the helm. Matt continued with that production, “Across the Atlantic Sea,” to the West End in the role of “Woof,” then launched the first national US Tour of HAIR, and was seen back on Broadway in the “Summer of Love” revival of HAIR. Following his time with the hippies, Matt launched the first national tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT as the “Representative from Jingletown”. Matt's cross-country adventures continued in 2014 with the first national tour of ONCE, where he played “Svec” and five instruments. Over the last five years, Matt has been a veteran of almost 2,000 performances.  Thankfully, Matt returned home to Broadway (again with Diane Paulus) in the hit musical WAITRESS, where he starred opposite Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, two-time Grammy winner Jason Mraz, and seven-time Grammy nominee and the show's composer, Sara Bareilles. He then toured the country with the WAITRESS National Tour as Earl opposite his real-life wife, Christine Dwyer, as Jenna. Upon returning from the road, Matt was a part of developing the World Premiere of The Secret Life of Bees at The Atlantic Theatre Company, directed by Tony Award winner Sam Gold. He also appeared in Orpheus Descending at Theatre for a New Audience.  Matt DeAngelis also started the Janice Jam in memory of his mother, Janice, who passed from metastatic breast cancer in 2022. This annual event channels the magic of Broadway to honor those we've lost, uplift those fighting, and fund critical research. This event serves as a yearly celebration of Janice, her love for theater, and raising money for those affected by metastatic breast cancer.   An all-star group of performers is joining Matt and his wife, Christine Dwyer, this year. Ari Axelrod, Ashley Loren, Carrie St. Louis, Cassadee Pope, Derek Klena, Donald Webber Jr., Eric Michael Krop, Justin Matthew Sargent, Kara Lindsay, Laurie Hernandez, and Norm Lewis are all expected to participate in the show.  On this exclusive edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Matt DeAngelis spoke about how Janice Jam partnered with Masquerade and previewed the sold-out event.  Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

Instead of abandoning the music… he decided to reclaim something bigger. The Heartland. Not as a place owned by a genre or a stereotype but as a place that BELONGS TO EVERYONE.Along the way, he's collaborated with Sara Bareilles and Walk the Moon, and even had a moment where Billie Eilish credited one of his songs as inspiration. But the most powerful moment in our conversation was this: “The heartland is everybody — white, black, gay, straight… the heartland is everybody.”And then he did something even more unexpected…He bought a farm outside Nashville. discovered 760 pawpaw trees on land the previous owner said was “dead”, and started building a life rooted in music, food, and community. It turns out the Heartland isn't just a place. It's a story we're ALL STILL WRITING TOGETHER!Ever been told you didn't belong somewhere… and later realized you were meant to redefine it?

Making Room For the Soul

As the new year gets rolling, I've been trying to make room for what I call “the soul.” To me, this means being more receptive to those mysterious synchronicities, insights, and feelings so easily missed when I keep myself busy and distracted. Sometimes this energy comes from within, and sometimes it's a “postcard from God,” as Walt Whitman would say.Bernie With His Plough & The Great Horned OwlIt could be a lyric that aligns with something on my mind. The other day, I heard Elton John sing the lyric about the howling old owl in the woods (from “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”). Though I've heard the line many times before, this time was different. Recently, each night when I take my dog out, I hear the haunting sound of a great horned owl in the woods behind my house. But what do I do with that synchronicity? Is it the owl itself - a symbol of wisdom, intuition, mystery, and the ability to see beyond illusion- that I should listen to? Maybe it's the lyric Bernie Taupin wrote for Elton about a desire to leave the superficial ego-driven world behind and return to a more grounded life - a more authentic self. Bernie was ready to leave the yellow brick road of striving for success. He wanted to go back to his plough and back to the howling old owl in the woods.Maybe it's both - the haunting sound of the owl and a longing to return “home.” Maybe the owl's saying, “Leave me alone already and just honor the mystery.” Maybe Bernie is telling me he'd love my simple, quiet life in rural Kentucky, a life that at times doesn't feel full enough.Contemplating Solitude With MertonA couple of days ago, while doing Qigong (meditative movements similar to Tai Chi), I wondered if there is a place nearby where people gather and move in these gentle ways. The first place that came to mind was the Abbey of Gethsemani, which is not far from here. Finding a group of monks, at least Trappist monks, doing Qigong, would be quite unlikely. Maybe if Merton were still around.Gethsemani was made famous by Thomas Merton, an influential spiritual writer and Trappist monk who lived at the monastery for 27 years. Four of those years, he spent mainly in his hermitage - a secluded cabin in the woods. “Not all of us are called to be hermits, but all of us need enough silence and solitude in our lives to enable the deeper voice of our own self to be heard at least occasionally.” - Thomas MertonBefore entering the Abbey at 26, Merton was worldly, raucous, and rebellious. Like Bernie and many of us, he struggled with the tension between a simple, humble life and a desire to engage with and influence the outside world. While at Gethsemani, Merton wrote over 70 books about contemplation, prayer, Eastern religions, interfaith dialogue and social justice, including his famous autobiography, “Seven Story Mountain.”What do I do with that? Merton did all of that while living a quiet life right here in my neck of the woods. Hmmmmmm….Reclaiming That Girl That Used to Be MineSometimes the soul provides a shift in how we think about ourselves and our lives. Sometimes, however, a postcard cuts right through all the analysis and goes straight to the heart.Yesterday, I saw a video reel of Sara Bareilles and Rufus Wainwright singing, “She Used to Be Mine.” Though I'd heard parts of this song before, I never stopped long enough to listen. Last night, with my reclaimed intention of receptivity, I did. Instead of landing on some great insight, I found myself in tears. Quickly, I pulled myself out, before sliding right back into those tears, tears that I realized I was grateful could still flow. When was the last time I cried? And why was I crying? And, why were so many of the people in the audience crying? The song is about losing one's self, and losing the connection to the child we once were - a universal loss that can make some of us ache, even at the age of 58, when we think we've done such a brilliant job of putting all of those parts of ourselves back together.Though no longer recognizing herself, she still remembers the girl she used to be. She sings with tenderness about that girl's imperfection, effort, goodness, and self-reliance. She questions what life would have been like if she could rewrite the ending for that girl.Sara Bareilles wrote this song for the 2016 Broadway musical, “Waitress.” The lead character sings it at the end of the second act when she has hit rock bottom. She is lost and struggling to remember who she is. Through the song, she mourns the loss of herself before starting to gain footing and for a moment taps into the strength and grit of that child she starts to reclaim. The story isn't over. We all have an opportunity to write the next act and to extend unconditional affection for the child that she describes as messy, but kind, lonely most of the time, but more, she is all of this “mixed up,” and “baked in a beautiful pie.”Why Here & Now?My long-held hope in sharing information online has been to balance the mind and spirit (the right and left brain). In recent times, I've leaned into the left-brain science. That's what people tend to read or listen to. That's what people need and can't easily find elsewhere. I'd forgotten, however, that expressing myself from my heart is something that I need. It is who I am. My own health and healing required much more than scientific information. It would be dishonest to only share part of that story.Even as a child, writing was my lifeline. It helped me find my place in the world. It gave me peace. That child wouldn't need to make sense of why the owl speaks to me at night. Or, why Bernie showed up with a plough in hand. Or, why Merton put down his pen and stepped out of his cabin to greet me in the woods. Or, even why Sarah, dressed as a waitress, crossed my path while singing a song I'd be sure was written just for me.But, I'm not only that child. I'm all grown up and can't help but wonder why these particular energies showed up now, beyond the fact that I created some space for them to do so? What would they have me know? I think, to embrace paradox and to remember that we are physical beings of this world, and also spiritual beings who transcend it. We need connection, and we need solitude. We are adults shaped by a lifetime of experience, and still vulnerable children filled with wonder and sometimes hurt. We are light, and we are shadow. And as Sara would say, we are all of this “mixed up and baked in a big beautiful pie.”Wishing you wholeness as you make your way through this year,CourtneyTo learn more about my discovery calls, non-patient consultations, or mentoring, please visit my website at:CourtneySnyderMD.com This is a public episode. Sometimes perspectives change...It's a new year and it's a new episode as we're already knee deep into Shortlists and Awards season consideration and it makes sense.  We had the pleasure of talking with Singer/Songwriter/Composer/Actor Sara Bareilles about her song 'Salt Then Sour Then Sweet' which was used in the new documentary on Apple+ 'Come See Me In The Good Light'.'Come See Me in the Good Light' is a poignant and unexpectedly funny love story about poets Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley facing an incurable cancer diagnosis with joy, wit and an unshakable partnership. Through laughter and unwavering love, they transform pain into purpose, and mortality into a moving celebration of resilience.I'll admit that when watching this for the first time, I actually felt a little uncomfortable watching as I was having trouble with as it made me uncomfortable watching it as it felt in conflict with my own emotions about being a care giver for a family member with terminal cancer, I felt uncomfortable viewing it all.  That is until the end credits and this song came on....Using the words of Andrea Gibson after she died, what Bareilles and Brandi Carlile do here is sum up what is a horrible emotional experience into a 3.5 minute experience that had this critic blubbering in tears.I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sara to talk about how she got involved in the project, the pressure of a job like this, working and repurposing someone else's art and the importance of storytelling leading with love.'Come See Me in the Good Light' is on Apple+ now.

"Come See Me In The Good Light" is a 2025 American documentary film directed by Ryan White, following poet/activist Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley as they navigate an examination of love and mortality after Gibson is diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. Singer-songwriters Sara Bareilles and Brandi Carlile serve as among the executive producers; they co-wrote a song for the documentary, "Salt Then Sour Then Sweet," with Gibson. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it received positive reviews and won the Festival Favorite Award. Join me for a heartfelt, funny, and honest look at the lyrics, the message, and the impact this anthem had on my own journey toward confidence and self-expression. Don't mind the puns in this one, but we're entering the “home stretch” of 2025 as we discuss how to “level the playing field” for us, as blind Blue Jays fans, when comparing baseball radio broadcast with that done on television on this Monday after the Big Game. This week on Outlook it's a MLB Mixed Bag show as we're joined, virtually, by BF Barry until he can join us in studio soon--to lament the close call in Game Seven of this year's World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. We give a post-series blow-by-blow of watching the games together, the three of us, with Barry's international perspective, along with brother/co-host Brian's info about the father-son connection (Dan and Ben Shulman who broadcast on TV and radio respectively), and a special Radio Western connection to Dan Shulman who used to call Western Mustangs games, and an example of an exciting moment from the final game, using a clip of the radio broadcasters to illustrate the unique playing field levelling for those of us who cannot see the games visually. Shout out to both Ben Shulman and Chris Leroux for calling the games on the radio as it seems the TV broadcasters more often get recognized. Then sister/co-host Kerry shares about her Halloween (first year going trick-or-treating) in a while, alongside learning some sad news about an old classmate, all the while describing using her friend's daughter's plastic sorcerer's staff as white cane for the evening plus the haunted house they walked through, a notion truly scary to Kerry in most circumstances. First episode after clocks went back (a lack of sleep for some of us) as we three are all hyped up with the close call loss, a series so close to being a win for the Jays and for Canada, as emotions run high with Kerry sharing what it's like, looking back at one whole year now since the worst guy for the job got voted back in the Whitehouse - so from one horror to another and the disappointment all across the country, we end with a song from Obama's POV. "No man's ignorance will ever be his virtue.” —Seriously, from This American Life, written by Sara Bareilles, sung by Leslie Odom Jr. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hI8TCA3fJcs

THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT "DOUBLE TROUBLE" - NO REGRETS: WITH JACKSON BROWNE, LUZ CASAL, RUFUS WAINWRIGHT & SARA BAREILLES. DOUBLE DOWN!!

Edit Piaf once famously sang “Je Regrette Rien” (I Regret Nothing), and listening to the following heart wrenching live performances, I'm reminded that anyone claiming that spiritual stance must be in denial - or, crowing in battered defiance in order to buttress themselves against the memory of life's cavalcade of pain and tortured conscience. For who can sincerely state that they have no regrets? No harsh word you wish you could have retracted?; No unsubstantiated suspicion that poisoned the well of a friendship or a faithful love?; Are you discounting the abuses large and small that have piled up so high that, somehow, you've become numb to them?; What about the road not taken…?These songs tell tales about the burden of living under the crushing weight of regret. If you don't shed a tear listening to them, your fluids need replenishing. The divine Spanish diva, Luz Casal singing Jackson Browne's “These Days”, accompanied by the writer and his ride or die Sancho Panza, David Lindley on his keening fiddle is like hearing a penitent sinner's weary confession; and, then there's the  incomparable Rufus Wainwright, in a duet with Sara Bareilles, delivering her own anthem with a thrilling operatic intimacy. THESE DAYS / LUZ CASAL, JACKSON BROWNE, AND DAVID LINDLEYThe preternaturally wise Jackson Browne was sixteen when he wrote “These Days” for Nico, who intoned it with a teutonic world weariness that spoke volumes. What did he know then about regrets? Certainly, the intervening years have instructed the now 76 year old songsmith in all the permutations of tragedy, yet somehow, he has managed to valiantly soldier on, staying creative, performing, and advocating for humanity.  There is something almost mystical about the voice of Luz Casal, and the delicacy with which she interprets Jackson's lyrics that transcends her heavily accented pronunciations. The words are sometimes hard to follow - but not the meaning - that's never lost. Time collapses as the message of this song, originally brought into being by the foreign born Christa Paffgen - and resurrected now, almost 60 years later, by this Goddess, comes full circle to enfold the aging songwriter in the arms of his own mortality. SHE USED TO BE MINE / SARA BAREILLES AND RUFUS WAINWRIGHTSara Bareilles wrote She Used to Be Mine as a show stopper for her Broadway musical, Waitress, and it's a barn burner. Here, in combination with the musical magus, Rufus Wainwright it morphs into something entirely different from it's template: it has become a religious act of forgiveness and redemption - an acknowledgment of life's profound losses, and at the same time an appreciation for what was - a ritual of devotion that celebrates living in all its ecstasy and futility - the duality of darkness and light, love and death. First Rufus sings alone, then Sara… but, when they harmonize the full extent of the love that was lost, and yet remains, lifts us up to the realization of the eternal knowledge that love is never lost. It is a requiem.

Get ready for Part 2 of my set from The Cuff on June 29th at Seattle Pride. This is the back half of my closing set on Sunday night with the most wonderful crowd a DJ could ask for. I pulled out my remix of "Brave" by Sara Bareilles, which I haven't played in 8 years. And I took a bit of a risk by ending the night with the full 1998 Extended Pride Remix by Junior Vasquez of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" - this remix has meant so much to me over the years, but I've never played it live. With Cyndi's farewell tour happening this summer, it felt like the right moment. The remix starts out high energy before slowing down tempo and dropping into the original song, before building back up again to its crazed crescendo... it gives folks that romantic moment at the end of the night to slow dance and reflect on what Pride might mean to them. It's a moment that always resonated powerfully with me when I heard this track on many NYC Pride weekends and I wanted to share this moment - a part of Junior's legacy (the set also features his "Rocketman" Arena anthem) - with a new generation.  And then, of course, the set ends with the ending track of all ending tracks... as the last dance of the night. Next up... my full set from Purgatory at Gifford House in Provincetown on July 3rd!

As a 4/1 myself, I to give real insight on this rare Human Design profile. This episode covers the real 4/1 experience - that foundation-seeking line 1 paired with relationship-focused line 4, why we're like trains on tracks (you can ride along but we're not changing course), and why the whole "bonus life" thing is honestly kind of annoying. Plus examples from fellow 4/1s who've stayed true to themselves no matter what the world wanted from them. What we covered in this episode:• Why 4/1s are only 2% of the population • The oak tree analogy and what it actually means to be "fixed fate" • Why we look steady on the outside but feel uncertain on the inside • How that line 1 foundation-seeking pairs with line 4 relationship focus • Real examples: Eminem, Sara Bareilles, and Lena Dunham (all 4/1s!)The thing about being a 4/1 is that people see this solid, dependable energy – and yes, we are that. But she's gone on to have a very different kind of career, writing music for Broadway and eventually performing as an actor on stage and on television.  At the New Yorker Festival, in 2024, she played her early hit “Gravity,” and spoke with staff writer Rachel Syme about the pressures of fame, aging, and why she prefers working in theatre. “There's so much competition in the music industry. I'm not a competitive person; I don't understand it. It's not that theatre isn't competitive, but there's this feeling—everybody's so happy to be there. Like, ‘We got a show, guys, and we don't know how long it's going to last!' ”
