Do high-school students – including those fortunate to attend America's most prestigious universities – enter college with a solid understanding of American civics (i.e., the republic's origin and design) or is it more a case of remedial learning? In this installment of Renewing Civics Education – Preparing for American Citizenship, Paul Peterson, a Hoover Institution senior fellow and Harvard University professor, reflects on his experiences teaching an introductory government course and offers thoughts on education reform – school choice, standardized testing – with Volker Senior Fellow (adjunct) “Checker” Finn, one of the nation's preeminent authorities on education policy and innovation. Recorded on January 9, 2025. ABOUT THE SERIES Educators across the land are preparing for Civic Learning Week in mid-March—with the capstone National Forum at the Hoover Institution on March 13—as the nation also gets ready for next year's 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. In anticipation of both—and recognizing the urgent need to rekindle civic literacy via our schools and colleges—Renewing Civics Education – Preparing for American Citizenship, a five-part podcast series, takes on the challenges of citizenship education: why it matters, what it needs to do differently, what shortcomings it must overcome. The series features distinguished members of Hoover's Working Group on Good American Citizenship, led by Volker Senior Fellow Chester Finn.
In today's episode of the podcast I talk with the very talented (and highly accomplished), multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter -St. Paul Petterson. Among the huge list of St. Paul's credits you will see some massive 'superstar' type names like - Morris Day, Darryl Hall, George Benson, The Corrs and Peter Frampton, but the thing that needs to be brought to your attention (at least in my opinion), is the fact that at only 17 years old, Paul was hand picked by the (now late, but always great) Prince to join 'The Time' for the Purple Rain movie. This of course led to many work related affiliations with Prince before St. Paul eventually became a successful singer and songwriter in his own right with labels like MCA and Atlantic. Paul also has his own podcast (with a similar theme to this one) entitled 'Music On The Run, which I strongly encourage you to check out. My friend Paul Peterson (married father of 3, lives in Arkansas, Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy from Valdosta State University, owns/runs his own practice) joins us to talk about how we can know we are whole/perfect now and we are always loved by God—and tools to absolutely accept this. Paul talks about how this helps us to “become”—not from a feeling of shame/brokenness—but from a position of strength, fully understanding our identity as a beloved child of God. Paul brings his personal experience, academic training, theological understanding, and professional experience to make this a reality in our lives. I was deeply moved (and calmed) listening to Paul. I encourage everyone to check out this episode and read Paul's book—I believe it will help you and give you more tools to help others. Thank you, Paul, for being on the podcast and your much needed work in our community. It is good people like you that give me hope. Born and raised in rural Hertfordshire, Aaron Liddard began his musical journey with the tuba, later exploring piano and guitar before finding his true passion for the saxophone. The structure of our jaw and our dental palate affects everything from how we breathe to how we sleep, which in turn affects our health and how we feel every day. Paul Peterson, DDS, joins Chris in this episode of Revolution Health Radio to discuss how he has implemented a functional medical model for dentistry in order to identify the foundational sources of the issues he sees in his patients. In this episode, Nabeel Mahmood and Phillip Koblence are accompanied by Paul Peterson, Senior Director Facilities Manager at JLL overseeing operations at multiple data center locations in the Northeast on the CyrusOne account. In this position, Paul is a major piece in the puzzle to ensure that customers have uptime, availability and connectivity with their data set and data set requirements. Nabeel digs deeper asking, “What's your day-to-day job? Are you just keeping the data center active in life?” “We'reboots-on-the-ground engineers at the facilities, keeping everything going. We deal with the maintenance plans, budget forecasts, everything that operationally needs to happen at that data center from the critical side all the way to the carpets and the paint on the walls - It runs through our team.” Paul never really had an interest in school growing up. He shares some insight with our co-hosts on how that played a role in his journey:“I remember what it was like coming out of high school as not a great academic, not really knowing where I was going. I had to learn the hard way. I had to kind of figure things out and it was concerning…this is why I'm doing what I'm doing with you guys and I'm talking to trade schools, visiting students, and having these conversations.”Nabeel asks Paul, "What's next for you? What are you thinking?"“I'm very, very happy where I'm at. I think things again kind of fell into place for a reason and timelines worked, and I think that the success of the [CyrusOne] account is that we're heading in the right direction.”Paul leaves us with advice for the younger generation beginning their own career journeys in the industry:“The best thing I can say for the students is to follow their passions. Find your aptitudes, do things, and you have to enjoy what you're doing. I had to learn a lot of hard mistakes before I figured out how to get from A to B. But I think this is a great industry. Everybody I've met in this industry always has a positive trajectory about them and we're booming, it's getting bigger, faster every day. If we can get these students in the right mindset, give 'em the skills they need, I think there's gonna be some really tremendous players.”
This recording from July 30, 2023. Signum MA student Patrick Lyon will present his thesis “Merry Old Englyn: The Familiar and the Strange in The Old English Rhyming Poem” and respond to questions from the audience in an interactive Thesis Theater. The discussion will be facilitated by Patrick's thesis supervisor, Dr. Paul Peterson. Abstract The Old English Rhyming Poem is one of the stranger and more overlooked entries in the lexicon of OE poetry, often regarded as interesting but flawed and incoherent due to its intensive pursuit of rhyme. As the poem is both unique and highly allusive, critical analyses have focused on the potential inspirations for (and origins of) the poem, and have attempted to make sense of the work's convoluted grammar and syntax. This thesis examines three related questions concerning the poem's origin, translation, and interpretation, and in conversation with critical analyses and previous editions of the poem presents a new argument for the inspiration of the poem coming from Welsh poetry. This thesis also makes the case that treating the poem as a riddle in addition to an elegy can make greater sense of some of the passages that earlier critics have found most vexing in the past. This recording from July 29, 2023. Signum MA student Christoph Schabert will present his thesis “Mágus saga jarls: A Digital Edition” and respond to questions from the audience in an interactive Thesis Theater. The discussion will be facilitated by Christoph's thesis supervisor, Dr. Paul Peterson. Abstract An Old Norse-Icelandic genre that has long been relegated to the background of scholarly studies is the genre of riddarasögur. With the largest amount of surviving manuscripts, this genre was very popular among audiences of medieval Norse sagas. With 89 different manuscripts, Mágus saga jarls has the most attested witnesses of all riddarasögur. The saga exists in two recessions: a younger and an older one. The earliest surviving manuscript of the younger and longer recension is the subject of this edition. It is known under the shelfmark AM 567 XVII ß 4to and was written between c. 1390 and 1410. This version of the saga has been rendered into a three-layer transcription – facsimile, diplomatic, normalized – and is fully compliant with version 3 of Medieval Nordic Text Archive (Menota) standards. About the Presenter Christoph Schabert is a development operations engineer currently living and working in Germany. Growing up he loved reading fantasy and was always intrigued with old languages, which only deepened during his studies of Old Norse with Signum. His combination of a deep interest in language and a technical background made him a prime candidate to do a digital edition. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your family. An old adage that the 33rd President of the United States Harry S. Truman knew all too well. Every family has that one black sheep, right? In the case of the Trumans, that shameful distinction fell on James John Chiles, aka Jim Crow Chiles, Harry's Uncle by marriage; a violent Missouri Bushwhacker who fought alongside Bloody Bill Anderson and Jesse James described by author David G. McCullough as universally hated and the stuff of children's nightmares. And believe it or not, Chiles got the nickname Jim Crow due to his talent as a dancer. Minstrel dancing, to be precise. Apparently in the 1830s and 1840's there was a popular white entertainer by the name of Thomas Dartmouth Rice who performed a song-and-dance routine in blackface while mimicking African Americans. The persona he put on during his act was known as Jim Crow. Rice went on tours all over the country, even in England, and it wasn't long before “Jim Crow” was just a common phrase used to describe all white comedians who did these degrading black-face type performances. And of course, years later the term would be adopted as the identifier for laws reinstating white supremacy in the South. And evidently, Truman's uncle was one hell of a Jim Crow dancer. Not exactly the type of association you'd want to have as a politician, right? Even in 1945 when Truman was elected. Oh, and don't worry – it gets much worse. Uncle Chile's comedy routine was the least of the future President's worries. Who was Jim Crow Chiles? A true menace to society or just a poor misunderstood soul just dancing away his sorrows? How did he fall in with Bloody Bill Anderson and William Quantrill? And did he really serve with General Shelby's Iron Brigade? In Minneapolis, the Peterson family musical dynasty goes back decades. Paul Peterson didn't even have to think about what he'd do with his life. In his late teens, he was pegged to join Morris Day and the Time for their Ice Cream Castles album which became their biggest and featured hits like "Jungle Love" and "The Bird". From there, Prince decided to build The Family, one of his many 80s side projects, around the voices of Paul and Susannah Melvoin. But, after one album The Family ended and Paul went solo. For over 30 years, Paul has been making his own music (new album Break On Free just came out) and working as an in demand hired gun for people like Steve Miller, Kenny Loggins, Oleta Adams and Donny Osmond. In addition to his excellent new album, Paul has a great podcast called Music on the Run about staying in shape on the road. It's a unique and fascinating story you have to hear! www.paulpeterson.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

There is almost certainly someone in your life who is struggling with OCD, and it could be much more severe than you might imagine. OCD is a serious mental illness, and it's very common for OCD sufferers to experience severe depression and even suicidal thoughts. In a religious setting, it is quite common for OCD to manifest in extreme and very unhealthy scrupulosity. In a previous Faith Matters podcast episode, podcast host Tim Chaves shared some of his own very painful struggles with OCD and scrupulosity. We were amazed by how many people reached out to us to share their own experiences with OCD. Some had been diagnosed and knew what to call it, but others hadn't replied that what they were suffering from during their lifetime was OCD. Latter-day Saints often start by explaining its symptoms in religious language, or looking only to religious solutions to solve it.This week, we share a truly illuminating conversation we recorded with Paul Peterson, CEO of the OCD and Anxiety Treatment Center. If you know someone who may be suffering from OCD, please feel free to share this episode with them. We want to spread as widely as possible any information that can lead to diagnosis and treatment. This is part of an ongoing conversation Faith Matters is sponsoring about mental health challenges faced by so many of our brothers and sisters, friends, and family members.
