When two clumsy children fall down a well, a Water Nixie forces them to do unpleasant chores for her. Will they ever get out? And how will a hairbrush and slippery mirror come to their aid? Find out in the shortest story we’ve ever read: The Water Nixie. After the tale, we present a mental-somersault of a theory on what the story could mean, before being taken on a journey by Jacob Grimm into the history of Nix and Nixies. We then read out correspondence on sexism in fairy tales and our story Sweetheart Roland by some surprising contributors. Dark and Twisty Tales: folk stories and fairy tales for the unafraid.
This Grimm's tale again has little to recommend it from a feminist standpoint, so I won't. However I think it's my third story in a row where I get to use my beheading sound effect and the first time I've added a dash of Bossa Nova as well as a celtic folk song snippet! Happy Halloween you lovely creepy people! If you like this podcast, pretty please write me a review! xxo
Our first twofer! First up is from the Brothers Grimm, "Sweetheart Roland," which features a stereotypically evil stepmother and a flower that does your housework. Next is the Hans Christian Andersen half-page quickie, "The Princess and the Pea," wherein a prince searches for a TRUE princess... Whatever tf that means. The Brothers Grimm Lunch Break: The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm
A beutiful maiden barely escapes with her life and her sweetheart from her stepmother, who is a real witch. They must outwit her several times thereafter, but along the way the maiden nearly loses everything she holds dear.
Episode 18: “Sweetheart Roland” (8:58) Imagine, after escaping from certain death and all you had been through together, that your sweetheart leaves you for another woman. At the end of the story it sounds like Roland had been put under a spell by this woman, but I didn’t really get that while I was reading it. See what you think. Will the stepdaughter and Roland *really* live happily ever after? Also: that must have been some apron. Two people died for it! (I do love the idea of talking blood drops, though.)
