'Change resistant drinkers'? The blue light approach with Mark Holmes & Mike Ward

The Alcohol 'Problem' Podcast

In this episode we talk to Mark Holmes and Mike Ward about the Blue Light approach, which aims to challenge the belief that nothing can be done with drinkers who may be deemed as 'not wanting to change'. The Blue Light approach aims to show there are a range of positive strategies that can be used to manage risk, reduce harm and promote change. We discuss the ideas and myths behind 'change resistant drinkers', and explore what approaches and strategies are most effective when working with people with severe alcohol problems who are not currently engaging in alcohol treatment or other support. Mike Ward is from a Social Work background but has worked most of his career in the alcohol and drug field.  He is the co-author of the Blue Light Manual on Working with Change Resistant Drinkers but also other practical guides including Safeguarding Vulnerable Dependent Drinkers.  He is the author of over thirty serious case reviews about individuals with alcohol and/or drug use disorders.Mark Holmes. BSc, RMN, SPMH has been a mental health nurse for over 30 years.  Mark was being twice awarded Nursing Times Awards; The Mental Health Nurse of the Year in 2012 and LTC Team of the year 2016. He also works as an associate for Alcohol Change UK co-authoring the Blue Light Project and has had over 20 publications. He currently sits on UK alcohol clinical guidelines expert group, and Alcohol Care Teams Steering group (ACTION). Details of the Blue Light approach can be found here. It is an initiative to develop alternative approaches and care pathways for drinkers who are not in contact with treatment services, but who have complex needs. It challenges the belief that only drinkers who show clear motivation to change can be helped, and sets out positive strategies that can be used with this client group. The Blue Light manual sets out these strategies in detail and offers a fundamental positive message that change is possible. It contains:Tools for understanding why individuals may not engageRisk assessment tools which are appropriate for drinkersHarm reduction techniques workers can useAdvice on crucial nutritional approaches which can reduce alcohol-related harmQuestions to help non-clinicians identify where individuals may be at risk of serious health problemsManagement frameworksGuidance on legal frameworks Support the showIf you are interested in one-to-one support for your drinking with Dr James Morris, contact him at DrJamesMorris.com For more episodes visit https://alcoholpodcast.buzzsprout.com/Follow us at @alcoholpodcast on X and Instagram

In this episode of Marriage Fit, we dive into what it really takes to raise healthy and happy kids. Parenting today comes with unique challenges—screen time battles, busy schedules, and the constant temptation of unhealthy food choices. But the good news? Small, intentional habits can create a lifelong foundation for your kids' well-being. We break down six key strategies that make a difference in your child's physical and mental health while strengthening your family bond. 1. Be the Example: Stay Healthy and Active Yourself Kids don't just listen to what we say—they mimic what we do. If you prioritize your health, they're more likely to follow suit. We discuss: The power of leading by example through daily exercise and balanced nutrition. Simple ways to integrate fitness into family life without it feeling like a chore. A personal story of how our kids have been inspired by our health habits. 2. Give Them Good Options: Protein, Something They Love, and Something They Need Making mealtime stress-free while ensuring kids get proper nutrition is key. Our approach: Every plate should include protein, something they love, and something they need (like veggies!). How to make healthy eating fun—without forcing it. Easy, kid-friendly meals that check all the nutritional boxes. 3. Play with Them & Include Them in Your Workouts Exercise should be fun, not a punishment. We cover: How movement strengthens family bonds and builds lifelong habits. Creative ways to incorporate kids into workouts (from dance parties to obstacle courses). The importance of making movement a daily, natural part of life. 4. Create a Healthy Relationship with Eating and Exercising Avoiding guilt and shame around food and fitness is critical for kids' self-esteem. We discuss: How to use positive language around food and movement. The importance of teaching kids to listen to their bodies. Why emphasizing progress over perfection builds confidence. 5. Reduce Screen Time, Blue Light, and Encourage Outdoor Activity Too much screen time? You're not alone. We share: How blue light impacts sleep and stress levels. Strategies to cut back on screens while increasing outdoor play. Family-friendly activities that make getting outside exciting again. 6. Involve Your Child in the Process: Grocery Shopping, Cooking, and Movement Choices When kids feel ownership over their health, they're more likely to embrace it. We cover: Why bringing kids to the grocery store helps them make better food choices. Simple ways to get them involved in meal prep. How letting them choose family workouts boosts engagement and consistency. Final Thoughts: Creating a healthy and happy environment for kids is a long-term investment—but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Small, consistent actions add up over time. The best part? You'll be growing stronger as a family in the process. What's one habit you'll start implementing today? Share your thoughts with us on social media or leave a review on Marriage Fit! _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

After years of frustration with traditional medicine and unanswered symptoms, Dan uncovered the hidden dangers in his own home and transformed his health through detoxification, circadian rhythm alignment, and conscious lifestyle changes. In this powerful conversation, we dive into the overlooked connection between our surroundings and our bodies, the dangers of everyday household toxins, and practical steps to reclaim vitality. Dan also shares how his experience led him to create Lucia Eyes, a company focused on blue light protection, and his nonprofit, Hope Chain, which supports mental health in young people. If you've ever struggled with unexplained health issues or want to take a proactive approach to well-being, this episode is a must-listen. Dan Huber is a relentless advocate for health, resilience, and purpose-driven innovation. After the 2008 mortgage crisis left his family in financial ruin, he faced another devastating challenge in 2011 when a severe mold infestation in their home led to mysterious illnesses. Determined to find answers, he immersed himself in alternative medicine and founded Lucia Eyes, a company specializing in blue-light-blocking glasses to help others combat environmental health threats. His expertise became a lifeline in 2023 when he aided a convent of nuns suffering from mold exposure—an experience marked by miraculous healing and profound spiritual encounters. He also founded HopeChain.com, an anti-suicide nonprofit for children, and serves on nonprofit boards including Kickstart Kids and the Child Liberation Front. Send us a textTake the Health Type Quiz hereDoes red light therapy actually work? Can morning sun improve your health? Do blue light blocking glasses really help with sleep? In this episode, Dr. Bobby takes a deep dive into the science behind light therapy—what's backed by evidence and what's just hype.Dr. Bobby shares personal experiences, from childhood eczema treated with sunlight to his daughter's improved sleep from morning walks, and unpacks the latest research on red, white, and blue light exposure. With thousands of red light therapy devices on the market and endless claims about their benefits, it's time to separate fact from fiction.Starting with the strongest evidence, Dr. Bobby explores how light affects skin conditions, depression, and sleep. While white light (and UV) therapy  has long been used for conditions like psoriasis and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) 【AAD guidelines】, red light therapy is a mixed bag. Studies suggest it can improve wound healing 【Study】, aid hair regrowth 【RCT Review】, and even reduce wrinkles—but much of the research is small-scale and often funded by device manufacturers.Deeper effects of red light therapy, such as pain relief for arthritis and fibromyalgia, remain controversial. Some studies show moderate pain reduction 【Meta-analysis on osteoarthritis】, while others suggest a placebo effect. And when it comes to weight loss or cognitive enhancement, the evidence is weak at best. Finally, Dr. Bobby revisits the hype around blue light blocking glasses. While early studies suggested blue light exposure/protection might affect sleep, newer research, and expert opinion indicates that it's not the light itself but rather the mental stimulation from screens that affects sleep 【Study】. The best solution? Reduce screen exposure and engage in relaxing activities before bed.Takeaways:Sunlight/UV exposure has well-documented benefits for skin conditions, depression, and sleep regulation. Morning light can help set your biological clock and improve sleep quality 【Study】.Red light therapy shows some promise for surface-level treatments like wound healing, hair growth, and wrinkles, but claims about deeper effects, like pain relief or cognitive improvement, lack strong evidence.Blue light blocking glasses may not be the key to better sleep—instead, reducing screen time and mental stimulation before bed is more effective. Is light therapy worth the investment? Maybe. If you are thinking of  spending hundreds of dollars, consider trying an N-of-1 experiment—track your own results and see if it actually makes a difference. And, as always, focus on evidence-based approaches to living long and well.Until next time, get outside, soak up some sun, and take the Health Type Quiz to better understand your health type!

Red light therapy and eye health always seems to be a hot topic and somewhat polarizing. On one side, there is all of this amazing photobiomodulation research demonstrating the eye health benefits via RLT. On the other hand, aren't you supposed to wear protective goggles when you do your red light therapy?I discuss my thoughts on the above, and more, when I dive into today's first study that looks at red light therapy for low-to-moderate myopia. I also discuss the physiology and pathology that leads to early onset (and, by nature, full blown) myopia. Hint, hint  — blue light may play a critical role. I outline what I would do for an eye treatment and provide insight as to what someone should consider in a device if eye health is the main motivation. In the second article that is hot sizzling off the press, we take a special detour to look at the impact of violet light and its photobiomodulation effects on depression. There is some fun rabbit holes secondary to this study, such as learning the impact of violet light for circadian rhythm, the role of OPN5 (a special neuropsin that plays a role in depression) and much more! The acclaimed American writer Walter Mosley has a new King Oliver book out: Been Wrong So Long It Feels Like Right, a novel that follows Oliver's search for both a missing woman and his estranged father who was released from prison nine years ago. But before getting to his latest mystery, I couldn't resist asking Mosley to compare his most famous fictional character, Easy Rawlins, with King Oliver. Mosley explains how Oliver, a contemporary detective in New York, faces different, perhaps less racialized challenges than Rawlins did in 1940s Los Angeles. We then moved onto to Mosley's observations about crime and punishment in white and black America as well as the importance of jazz music in his writing. Here are the five KEEN ON takeaways from this conversation with Walter Mosley:* The difference between his two detective characters reflects changing times in America: Easy Rawlins operates in a strictly black-and-white 1940s Los Angeles where his race defines everything, while Joe King Oliver works in contemporary New York where racial boundaries are more fluid, even if racism still exists.* Mosley's writing process is remarkably disciplined and productive (or so he says) - he writes three hours every day without fail, enabling him to complete two to three books annually while also working on television and film projects.* The character Joe King Oliver was named after the famous jazz musician - this reflects both the musical qualities Mosley sees in writing and the character's connection to his fictional missing father, who named him after the jazz great who mentored Louis Armstrong.* Been Wrong So Long It Feels Like Right interweaves two plots: a case involving a runaway wife and a personal quest to find Oliver's estranged father who was secretly released from prison nine years ago, exploring themes of family reconciliation.* Growing up as an only child with a Jewish mother and African-American father influenced Mosley's perspective on American identity - though he sees such multicultural backgrounds as common to many Americans' experiences rather than unique to his situation.Walter Mosley is one of America's most celebrated and beloved writers. His books have won numerous awards and have been translated into more than twenty languages. Mosley is the author of the acclaimed Easy Rawlins series of mysteries, including national bestsellers Cinnamon Kiss, Little Scarlet, and Bad Boy Brawly Brown; the Fearless Jones series, including Fearless Jones, Fear Itself, and Fear of the Dark; the novels Blue Light and RL's Dream; and two collections of stories featuring Socrates Fortlow, Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned, for which he received the Anisfield-Wolf Award, and Walkin' the Dog. He lives in New York City.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In this interview with Doug Casey, we discuss what to expect in 2025. We also explore alternatives to traditional education, discussing Casey's upcoming book that offers guidance for young individuals seeking unconventional career paths. Personal anecdotes highlight the benefits of early childhood reading and exposure to diverse ideas, as we reflect on shifting perceptions of various professions. The discussion then turns to politics, examining the implications of recent leadership changes and their impact on personal freedom. We consider Trump's return to office, debating whether it strengthens governmental authority or exposes its inefficiencies, with a cautiously optimistic view of potential deregulation. The conversation expands into financial strategies, contrasting libertarian and anarcho-capitalist perspectives, and emphasizing the importance of asset accumulation, geographic diversification, and financial independence in an increasingly regulated world. Finally, we discuss entrepreneurship as a path to financial freedom, warning against the pitfalls of speculative trading and overvalued markets. This episode encourages a mindset of self-reliance, strategic planning, and adaptability in the face of societal and economic changes. Over the past decade, most of us have converted our home lighting to light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, as they save a significant amount of energy, requiring 75-90% less energy than older incandescent lights. Personally, I converted the 50 or lightbulbs in my house to nearly all LEDs.Most current LEDs emit, of course, visible light. But they also emit a significant amount of blue light and very little red and infrared (IR), in contrast to old-fashioned incandescent bulbs that emit some blue and a lot of red and IR. Remember when you had to change an incandescent bulb when it died? If you tried to unscrew it, it could burn your hand because the bulb was extremely hot. That's the effect of red and IR that generates heat. Change a LED bulb and you can do so immediately, as the bulb is cool, even after dying just moments earlier. This is due to the absence of significant amounts of red and IR.While well-intended to save energy, it is now becoming clear that the wholesale conversion to blue-emitting LED lighting has been exerting adverse health effects, especially visual. So let's begin talking about the role of light, specifically blue wavelengths in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, then about the role of red and IR in a future episode. _______________________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here._____________________________________________________________________________MyReuteri and Gut to Glow can be found here: oxiceutics.comSupport the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed
