Neurobiologist Jamie Zeitzer is an expert on sleep – or, more accurately, an expert on why so many can't sleep. He notes that, ironically, it's often anxiety about sleep that prevents good sleep. In short, we lose sleep over lost sleep. Wearables and other tools can help but only to a point, and medications do not induce natural sleep. Instead, he counsels consistent routines, less stimulation at bedtime, and cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce worry about insomnia. Unfortunately, you can't work harder to get better sleep – you have to learn to relax, Zeitzer tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? Parenting Anxious Teens | Parenting Teens, Managing Teen Anxiety, Parenting Strategies
Hi Parents, What if easing your teen's anxiety wasn't just about therapy or medication - but also about their meals, sleep habits, and screen time? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Matt Bernstein, clinical psychiatrist and CEO of Accord, to explore the powerful, often-overlooked link between metabolism and mental health. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Bernstein shares how everyday choices - from the foods we eat to the light we're exposed to - can influence anxiety, focus, and emotional regulation. We break down how metabolic dysfunction (like blood sugar crashes, poor sleep, and blue light overload) can fuel anxiety in teens - and how simple, science-backed changes can help. Dr. Bernstein explains the benefits of a whole-food, high-fat, low-carb diet, how circadian rhythms affect mood, and why walking after meals might be one of the easiest tools for mental wellness. You'll also hear why ultra-processed foods are more damaging than we think, how screen time affects the brain, and why sleep is a non-negotiable for well-being. If your teen struggles with anxiety, low energy, or mood swings, this episode offers clarity and hope. About Dr. Matt Bernstein: Dr. Matt is a board-certified psychiatrist and CEO of Accord, a platform transforming mental health through metabolic care. A leader in the emerging field of metabolic psychiatry, he connects brain health to lifestyle habits like nutrition, movement, and sleep. In 2023, he hosted the first public conference on metabolic psychiatry to advance this important conversation. This episode is packed with practical strategies to help your teen feel calmer, more balanced, and better equipped to thrive - even in a world full of sugar, screens, and stress. Ep 161 - "Blue Light" Liz Condon and Anouk Willemen From Felix Gray by Open Your Eyes with Dr. Kerry Gelb
Ian Cameron, the Chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police, has been the target of a virulent attack by The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) for labelling as “thugs” Deputy President Paul Mashatile's VIP Protection officers who were involved in a “brutal” assault on “innocent” civilians next to the N1 in Johannesburg in 2023 - but were acquitted following an internal disciplinary hearing - despite video evidence. “In a parliamentary context, as part of my constitutional duty to do oversight, I'm not going to allow any union to make me look or seem or feel like just being a rubber stamp that needs to simply approve anything they say or do. There's something very wrong with the process that was followed here and it's critical for us to dissect it.” As for the mysterious deaths of four police officers whose bodies were found in the Hennops River recently, Cameron says: “I do find it suspicious, and it's not to cast doubt on any part of an investigation or anything like that, but it is an extraordinary kind of event….So it would be very interesting to understand more of the depth and context as to what exactly those members were involved with.” Cameron also gives an update on the biggest issues his committee is currently grappling with, including the proposed regulatory amendments of PSiRA that “in essence mean that in a very arbitrary way, a security company can lose its function overnight”.
What if that “mystery rash,” those fine lines, or the sudden hair shedding weren't just cosmetic concerns… but biological clues your body is trying to send you?In this episode, we unpack the science your dermatologist wishes you knew. In this episode we talk to Mark Holmes and Mike Ward about the Blue Light approach, which aims to challenge the belief that nothing can be done with drinkers who may be deemed as 'not wanting to change'. The Blue Light approach aims to show there are a range of positive strategies that can be used to manage risk, reduce harm and promote change. We discuss the ideas and myths behind 'change resistant drinkers', and explore what approaches and strategies are most effective when working with people with severe alcohol problems who are not currently engaging in alcohol treatment or other support. Mike Ward is from a Social Work background but has worked most of his career in the alcohol and drug field. He is the co-author of the Blue Light Manual on Working with Change Resistant Drinkers but also other practical guides including Safeguarding Vulnerable Dependent Drinkers. He is the author of over thirty serious case reviews about individuals with alcohol and/or drug use disorders.Mark Holmes. BSc, RMN, SPMH has been a mental health nurse for over 30 years. In this episode of Marriage Fit, we dive into what it really takes to raise healthy and happy kids. Parenting today comes with unique challenges—screen time battles, busy schedules, and the constant temptation of unhealthy food choices. But the good news? Small, intentional habits can create a lifelong foundation for your kids' well-being. We break down six key strategies that make a difference in your child's physical and mental health while strengthening your family bond. 1. Be the Example: Stay Healthy and Active Yourself Kids don't just listen to what we say—they mimic what we do. If you prioritize your health, they're more likely to follow suit. We discuss: The power of leading by example through daily exercise and balanced nutrition. Simple ways to integrate fitness into family life without it feeling like a chore. A personal story of how our kids have been inspired by our health habits. 2. Give Them Good Options: Protein, Something They Love, and Something They Need Making mealtime stress-free while ensuring kids get proper nutrition is key. Our approach: Every plate should include protein, something they love, and something they need (like veggies!). How to make healthy eating fun—without forcing it. Easy, kid-friendly meals that check all the nutritional boxes. 3. Play with Them & Include Them in Your Workouts Exercise should be fun, not a punishment. We cover: How movement strengthens family bonds and builds lifelong habits. Creative ways to incorporate kids into workouts (from dance parties to obstacle courses). The importance of making movement a daily, natural part of life. 4. Create a Healthy Relationship with Eating and Exercising Avoiding guilt and shame around food and fitness is critical for kids' self-esteem. We discuss: How to use positive language around food and movement. The importance of teaching kids to listen to their bodies. Why emphasizing progress over perfection builds confidence. 5. Reduce Screen Time, Blue Light, and Encourage Outdoor Activity Too much screen time? You're not alone. We share: How blue light impacts sleep and stress levels. Strategies to cut back on screens while increasing outdoor play. Family-friendly activities that make getting outside exciting again. 6. Involve Your Child in the Process: Grocery Shopping, Cooking, and Movement Choices When kids feel ownership over their health, they're more likely to embrace it. We cover: Why bringing kids to the grocery store helps them make better food choices. Simple ways to get them involved in meal prep. How letting them choose family workouts boosts engagement and consistency. Final Thoughts: Creating a healthy and happy environment for kids is a long-term investment—but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Small, consistent actions add up over time. The best part? You might think blue light is just part of modern life—phones, tablets, TVs, and LED bulbs everywhere—but what if it's quietly wrecking your sleep, spiking your cortisol, and accelerating aging? Andy Mant, founder and CEO of Bon Charge, breaks down how exposure to artificial blue light is disrupting our circadian rhythms, messing with melatonin production, and leading to poor sleep, brain fog, and even weight gain. But it's not all bad news. Andy also shares the incredible benefits of red light therapy—how it helps with muscle recovery, injury healing, anti-aging, and even hair regrowth. Learn why your phone and laptop screens might be telling your brain it's noon at midnight, how blue light disrupts melatonin just like caffeine does, and why simply switching your light bulbs can make a massive difference in your energy levels, sleep quality, and longevity. Plus, Andy shares insights on the science-backed benefits of red light therapy for collagen production, muscle recovery, and even fat loss. "Light impacts your skin. Blue light disrupts melatonin. In this episode Dan Huber's remarkable journey from chronic illness to healing reveals just how deeply environmental toxins—especially mold—can affect our well-being, leading to conditions like chronic pain, fatigue, and brain fog. After years of frustration with traditional medicine and unanswered symptoms, Dan uncovered the hidden dangers in his own home and transformed his health through detoxification, circadian rhythm alignment, and conscious lifestyle changes. In this powerful conversation, we dive into the overlooked connection between our surroundings and our bodies, the dangers of everyday household toxins, and practical steps to reclaim vitality. Dan also shares how his experience led him to create Lucia Eyes, a company focused on blue light protection, and his nonprofit, Hope Chain, which supports mental health in young people. If you've ever struggled with unexplained health issues or want to take a proactive approach to well-being, this episode is a must-listen. Dan Huber is a relentless advocate for health, resilience, and purpose-driven innovation. After the 2008 mortgage crisis left his family in financial ruin, he faced another devastating challenge in 2011 when a severe mold infestation in their home led to mysterious illnesses. Determined to find answers, he immersed himself in alternative medicine and founded Lucia Eyes, a company specializing in blue-light-blocking glasses to help others combat environmental health threats. His expertise became a lifeline in 2023 when he aided a convent of nuns suffering from mold exposure—an experience marked by miraculous healing and profound spiritual encounters. He also founded HopeChain.com, an anti-suicide nonprofit for children, and serves on nonprofit boards including Kickstart Kids and the Child Liberation Front. With a passion for advocacy, innovation, and healing, Huber continues to make a lasting impact across industries and communities. —Instagram: @luciaeyesofficial —Website: www.luciaeyes.com use code LOVE20 for 20% off Themes: Chronic Illness, Mold Toxicity, Environmental Health, Detoxification, Brain Fog, Chronic Fatigue, Blue Light, Circadian Rhythm, Natural Healing, Holistic Health, Health Recovery, Toxin Exposure, Mold Exposure, Light Therapy, Wellness Tips, Health Podcast, Alternative Medicine, Mental Health, Biohacking, Sleep Optimization, Healthy Living, Immune Support, Hidden Toxins, Home Toxins, Natural Remedies, Holistic Healing, Functional Medicine, Wellness Journey, Health Awareness 0:00:00 Intro 0:00:19 Introduction to Chronic Health Mysteries 0:02:28 Meet Dan Huber 0:03:18 Dan's Journey from Illness to Health 0:05:20 Discovering the Mold Problem 0:07:52 The Impact of Mold on Health 0:12:03 Addressing Depression and Mental Health 0:14:40 The Effects of Blue Light 0:16:05 Circadian Rhythms and Hormonal Health 0:18:12 Finding Solutions for Mold and Mycotoxins 0:24:37 The Importance of Sunlight 0:27:10 Mold Symptoms and Testing 0:33:55 The Role of Toxins in Our Lives 0:39:58 Emotional Impact of Mold Exposure 0:43:35 Strategies for Mold Prevention 0:49:44 Practical Steps to Improve Health 0:58:17 Resources for Further Support —This episode is sponsored by the Institute for Integrative Nutrition: Certified Health Coach Training: Use code MARKGROVES20 for 20% off ALL courses from IIN & Chopra at http://bit.ly/MARKIIN —Have a question For Mark to answer on the podcast?https://www.speakpipe.com/TheMarkGrovesPodcast —Have a question for Mark and want an immediate answer? Send us a textTake the Health Type Quiz hereDoes red light therapy actually work? Can morning sun improve your health? Do blue light blocking glasses really help with sleep? In this episode, Dr. Bobby takes a deep dive into the science behind light therapy—what's backed by evidence and what's just hype.Dr. Bobby shares personal experiences, from childhood eczema treated with sunlight to his daughter's improved sleep from morning walks, and unpacks the latest research on red, white, and blue light exposure. With thousands of red light therapy devices on the market and endless claims about their benefits, it's time to separate fact from fiction.Starting with the strongest evidence, Dr. Bobby explores how light affects skin conditions, depression, and sleep. While white light (and UV) therapy has long been used for conditions like psoriasis and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) 【AAD guidelines】, red light therapy is a mixed bag. Studies suggest it can improve wound healing 【Study】, aid hair regrowth 【RCT Review】, and even reduce wrinkles—but much of the research is small-scale and often funded by device manufacturers.Deeper effects of red light therapy, such as pain relief for arthritis and fibromyalgia, remain controversial. Some studies show moderate pain reduction 【Meta-analysis on osteoarthritis】, while others suggest a placebo effect. And when it comes to weight loss or cognitive enhancement, the evidence is weak at best. Finally, Dr. Bobby revisits the hype around blue light blocking glasses. While early studies suggested blue light exposure/protection might affect sleep, newer research, and expert opinion indicates that it's not the light itself but rather the mental stimulation from screens that affects sleep 【Study】. The best solution? Reduce screen exposure and engage in relaxing activities before bed.Takeaways:Sunlight/UV exposure has well-documented benefits for skin conditions, depression, and sleep regulation. Morning light can help set your biological clock and improve sleep quality 【Study】.Red light therapy shows some promise for surface-level treatments like wound healing, hair growth, and wrinkles, but claims about deeper effects, like pain relief or cognitive improvement, lack strong evidence.Blue light blocking glasses may not be the key to better sleep—instead, reducing screen time and mental stimulation before bed is more effective. Is light therapy worth the investment? Maybe. If you are thinking of spending hundreds of dollars, consider trying an N-of-1 experiment—track your own results and see if it actually makes a difference. And, as always, focus on evidence-based approaches to living long and well.Until next time, get outside, soak up some sun, and take the Health Type Quiz to better understand your health type!

On the other hand, aren't you supposed to wear protective goggles when you do your red light therapy?I discuss my thoughts on the above, and more, when I dive into today's first study that looks at red light therapy for low-to-moderate myopia. I also discuss the physiology and pathology that leads to early onset (and, by nature, full blown) myopia. Hint, hint — blue light may play a critical role. I outline what I would do for an eye treatment and provide insight as to what someone should consider in a device if eye health is the main motivation. In the second article that is hot sizzling off the press, we take a special detour to look at the impact of violet light and its photobiomodulation effects on depression. There is some fun rabbit holes secondary to this study, such as learning the impact of violet light for circadian rhythm, the role of OPN5 (a special neuropsin that plays a role in depression) and much more! If you found the information in today's episode particularly interesting and/or compelling, please share it with a family member, friend, colleague and/or anyone that you think could benefit and be illuminated by this knowledge. In this interview with Doug Casey, we discuss what to expect in 2025. We also explore alternatives to traditional education, discussing Casey's upcoming book that offers guidance for young individuals seeking unconventional career paths. Personal anecdotes highlight the benefits of early childhood reading and exposure to diverse ideas, as we reflect on shifting perceptions of various professions. The discussion then turns to politics, examining the implications of recent leadership changes and their impact on personal freedom. We consider Trump's return to office, debating whether it strengthens governmental authority or exposes its inefficiencies, with a cautiously optimistic view of potential deregulation. The conversation expands into financial strategies, contrasting libertarian and anarcho-capitalist perspectives, and emphasizing the importance of asset accumulation, geographic diversification, and financial independence in an increasingly regulated world. Finally, we discuss entrepreneurship as a path to financial freedom, warning against the pitfalls of speculative trading and overvalued markets. This episode encourages a mindset of self-reliance, strategic planning, and adaptability in the face of societal and economic changes. At nearly every turn, we see modern technology replacing quality and health with convenience and control. Modern lighting is an example of this. We have known for a long time about the health issues associated with certain types of artificial lights. Fluorescent lights are known to be harmful and toxic. However, their continued use is (more...)
