Most of us like to believe we can trust the police, but not everyone goes into law enforcement for the greater good. Some enter the police academy because they crave power over others and what better job than policing offers this power? I believe most police officers are good, and a few are bullies. John Patrick Addis, though, was the worst kind of police officer. He was a monster with a badge. Sources Puitt, Glenn. Dr. Tom Curran continues to discuss 18 scripture passages that will change your life. Tom shares insight on the call to evangelize, as referenced in The Call of Simon the Fisherman in Luke 5. Tom's List of Life-Changing Scripture PassagesWhile the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything* and followed him. (Luke 5: 1-11)

The newest episode of Finding Demo Surf Fishing has dropped and we are talking about taxes. Audio: https://share.transistor.fm/s/b201486aEpisode Title: Taxes on Taxes on TaxesSummary:In this eye-opening episode, we dig into the fishing excise tax—the hidden fee built into nearly every piece of fishing gear you buy. While it's meant to fund conservation, access, and habitat restoration, we ask the tough questions:Where does that money actually go?Who decides how it's spent? Are surf anglers getting shortchanged compared to boaters and other user groups? We explore the history of the tax, how it's structured, and why most anglers don't even realize they're paying it. You'll hear real examples of mismanagement, underfunded coastal access, and political gridlock—but also the success stories, like the Chesapeake Bay restoration effort, that prove this system can work when done right.Whether you're knee-deep in the surf or casting from a pier, if you fish—you fund this. It's time to understand how it works and what needs to change. What You'll Learn:The origin and intent of the Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration ActWhy surf and shore anglers often get less benefit from the taxes they payHow tax revenue is distributed—and how that could be improvedSuccess stories: where the tax is working as intendedSimple ways anglers can get involved and push for changeResources & Mentions:The Dingell-Johnson ActThe Wallop-Breaux AmendmentChesapeake Bay Restoration ProjectYour state fish and wildlife agency (for checking access project allocations)Tag us and share your thoughts on Instagram, Facebook, or wherever you fish online.Available now wherever you get your podcasts.Subscribe, rate, and leave a review to help us keep this conversation going! This Episode Is Sponsored By: DS Custom Tackle: Tackle Supply for all anglers. A week into the papacy of Pope Leo XIV—the first U.S.-born pope—hosts Colleen Dulle and Gerard O'Connell take stock of the emerging contours and dimensions of his leadership. They begin with his private meeting with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and what it might suggest about his diplomatic approach amid tensions between the Vatican and the U.S. over issues like migration and climate. They then turn to his emotional inauguration Mass, where the pope quoted St. Augustine, received the woolen pallium and fought back tears as the Fisherman's Ring was placed on his finger. Finally, they consider how his early private audiences, formal speeches and video messages suggest a papacy in continuity with Pope Francis, yet possibly distinguished by a more scripted, deliberate style and a gift for expressing ideas with arresting elegance. One phrase he has already repeated might offer a defining glimpse into his papal politic: “disarmed and disarming.” Find full show notes and related links on our website Support our podcast—become a digital subscriber to America Media. The NBA playoffs may be unpredictable, but at least summer blockbusters deliver. In this episode of They That Hope, Father Dave and Deacon Bob unpack the Cleveland Cavaliers' devastating playoff collapse (RIP hope), debate baseball scandals from Pete Rose to steroid-era legends, and preview the biggest summer movies hitting theaters. From Marvel's new Thunderbolts to the return of Mission: Impossible and a much-anticipated Fantastic Four reboot, they break down what's worth watching and what might just be movie theater popcorn filler. Alongside the movie chatter and sports rants, Deacon Bob introduces an exciting revival of a powerful small group ministry: Discipleship Quads. This free resource fosters spiritual growth through intentional, weekly gatherings rooted in Scripture, catechesis, and deep personal sharing. With new momentum and even a Spanish-language version, the Quads model is helping people grow in faith and community across the country. (Check it out at dquads.com.) The episode wraps with reflections on Pope Leo XIV's installation Mass, his moving words of humility, and the symbolic weight of receiving the Fisherman's Ring. As the Church welcomes a new pope, Father Dave and Deacon Bob consider what might lie ahead in his papacy—including the possibility of a historic first visit to Ukraine. As always, expect humor, brotherhood, and a reminder that our hope isn't in playoffs or premieres—it's in Jesus. Highlighted Sections (00:00) Postseason Chaos and NBA Plot Twists Deacon Bob and Father Dave kick off the episode with a spirited sports recap, reacting to the Cleveland Cavaliers' playoff collapse and the unexpected shape of the NBA postseason. They debate changing legacies, cheer for the Knicks, and comment on the Toronto Maple Leafs' latest heartbreak in hockey. (05:23) Baseball Scandals and Hall of Fame Debates From debates over Pete Rose to steroid-era sluggers like Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa, the hosts unpack the evolving conversation around integrity in baseball and eligibility for Cooperstown. (14:18) Speaking of Movies: Summer Blockbusters Begin Summer movie season kicks off with Marvel's Thunderbolts, and Father Dave shares why this new team-up film hits just right. The duo also discuss upcoming blockbusters like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and the much-anticipated reboot of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, as well as kids' flicks like How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch going live-action. (23:11) A Ministry That's Multiplying: Discipleship Quads Father Dave and Deacon Bob talk about Discipleship Quads—a free resource from Franciscan University that helps small groups grow in faith together. Recently refreshed with new materials and a Spanish-language version, this initiative is spreading globally and helping transform Catholic community life. (26:30) A Pope Named Bob (Sort Of): Leo XIV's Installation Pope Leo XIV's inauguration Mass moved the world—and the hosts—with moments of humility and reverence. They reflect on his powerful statement of servanthood and the symbolism of receiving the Fisherman's Ring, traditionally used to seal papal documents. (32:10) Praying for Ukraine and Papal Diplomacy As the pope meets with global leaders, including U.S. officials, Deacon Bob and Father Dave explore the possibility of his first papal trip being to Ukraine. Greg Smith reflects on the joyful inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, unpacking its rituals, from the emotional moment Leo received the Fisherman's Ring to the inclusive rite of obedience. He answers why the ceremony is grand yet humble, why it's called the Mass for the Petrine Ministry, and how Leo's Chicago-to-Peru journey shapes his universal call. Greg reveals the Catholic Church as the Roman Empire transformed, where Peter's bones and Michelangelo's dome proclaim Christ's victory. With world leaders and Eastern patriarchs gathered, this episode explores a mature faith uniting two hemispheres, one Church. Support this ministry so more people can consider Catholicism! In this soul-soothing episode of The Skeptic Metaphysicians Present, Will invites us on a serene journey into the heart of mindfulness through a touching story called “The Mindful Fisherman,” drawn from the transformative book The Monk and the Butterfly by Kai T. Murano. Set in a quiet coastal village, the tale follows Esau, an old fisherman who lives with deep intention and quiet reverence for life. Unlike the other villagers rushing to sea, Esau moves slowly—not because of age, but from mindful awareness. When a young man from the city, worn down by the noise and pressure of modern life, encounters Esau, the two embark on a day of fishing that becomes far more than a simple boat ride. ✨ Along the way, Esau imparts profound wisdom:“The sea is like our minds—sometimes calm, sometimes stormy. But always, it is the sea.”“Fishing is not just about the fish—it's about being present with every sense.”Through the ebb and flow of the ocean, the young man rediscovers something he thought he had lost—his peace. And in doing so, he learns that true tranquility isn't found in the escape from life, but in the presence within it.Why You Should Listen This episode is more than a story—it's a meditation in motion. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the speed of life, this beautifully told parable will remind you of the power in slowing down. It offers a timeless lesson: peace is always available, if only we stop to notice it. Whether you're listening during your morning commute, a quiet walk, or while sipping your evening tea, “The Mindful Fisherman” will anchor you in the present moment.Featured Book The Monk and the Butterfly: Stories of Zen and the Art of Change by Kai Team MuranoIf this story touched your heart, you'll want to experience the entire collection. There are two ways to tell the experience of an angler: how he holds a fish and how he keeps his secrets. The latter is probably more important.A seasoned angler intuitively understands the vulnerability of a river. Spot burning is a real thing with real consequences.Good anglers understand this concept. Good people understand this concept.Every piece of river is someone else's favorite place. So we respect the spots — for others, if not for ourselves. Here's the article:READ: Troutbitten | Respect the Spots! We begin John 21 in the Who is Jesus? series and as we look at verses 1-8 Pastor Dustin Clegg has 4 observations from the text:1) The Spirit of Jesus guides us to observe, acknowledge and celebrate the work of Jesus in our brothers and sisters.2) Actively waiting on Jesus is a biblical practice.3) The difference between church nothingness and incredible, joyous, amazing, unbelievable Kingdom impact could be 48 inches.4) Jesus is trustworthy to be present even if we cannot see Him clearly in our current circumstances.ApplicationObedience is better than expertise.Obedience is better than planning.Obedience is better than systems and structures.Obedience is better than programming.
