Steve reads the timeless classic tale which explores the importance of listening to warnings, the cunning of strangers, and the thin line between safety and peril. In this episode, we dive into the colourful, high-energy world of Domingo Samudio, better known as Sam the Sham, the unforgettable frontman of Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. With his trademark turban, cape, and mischievous grin, Sam didn't just perform music—he created a spectacle that helped define the fun, rebellious spirit of 1960s rock and roll.We explore Sam's early life in Texas, where his rich cultural influences helped shape a sound that fused rhythm and blues, garage rock, and Tex-Mex flair. From humble beginnings playing small clubs to forming the Pharaohs, Sam's journey is one of persistence, personality, and pure musical instinct.Of course, no conversation about Sam the Sham is complete without his global smash hit Wooly Bully—a track that became one of the biggest-selling singles of 1965. With its infectious groove and playful lyrics, the song captured the carefree spirit of a generation and remains a party favourite to this day. We take a closer look at how that iconic track came together and why it still resonates decades later. We also revisit the success of Little Red Riding Hood, another standout hit that proved Sam was far more than a one-hit wonder. With its cheeky storytelling and catchy hook, it cemented his place in pop culture history and showcased his ability to blend novelty with genuine musical craftsmanship. As musical tastes shifted in the late 1960s, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs faced the same challenges as many artists of the era. We explore the changing landscape of rock music, the impact of lineup changes, and how Sam navigated a rapidly evolving industry. You'll also hear about Sam's decision to step away from the spotlight in the 1970s, choosing a quieter, more spiritual path rather than chasing ongoing fame. It's a fascinating turn that adds depth to the story of a man who once lit up stages around the world. This episode celebrates the legacy of a true original—an artist who brought humour, theatre, and unforgettable music to millions. Whether you remember dancing to Wooly Bully or are discovering Sam the Sham for the first time, this is a story that captures the magic of a golden era in music.Tune in and rediscover the sound, the style, and the spirit of one of the most unique voices of the '60s.

In this episode, Geoff and Katrina dive back into Little Red Riding Hood variants in other parts of the world. ATU 123 and ATU 333 can be found in China, Korea, Japan, and the African Diaspora. But while Bruno Bettelheim and others want to talk a big game about the wolf being a representation of the dangers of sexuality, what can we glean from a shapeshifting tiger/old woman, a yokai, and ...a rabbit? Find out as we have a fun time retelling these tales to explain how some "universals" might not be so universal. Why are wolves always the villains in old European fairy tales? And is it OK to stereotype animals, or people for that matter? To investigate, Molly, Carl and Eleanor head off on a fairytale research trip to the snowy forests of Germany. But their adventure takes a spooky turn when they get lost on the way back to their hotel in the woods, with just one little torch to guide them...
In this episode, Katrina and Geoff use what we've covered in episodes #126 and #128 to examine one of the most famous fairy tales of all time, Little Red Riding Hood. First, Katrina retells the tale from Charles Perrault and then goes into the Brothers Grimm. But she tells their ATU 123 tale, The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids before Geoff retells the classic Brothers Grimm ATU 333 tale, Little Red Cap. As we look at all of these fairly short stories, we're ready to dive into research from Little Red Riding Hood: A Casebook by Alan Dundes, where he examines the history of the psychoanalysis done on this tale starting with Freud, himself. But most importantly, Dundes discusses the flaws in only looking at the Brothers Grimm or Perrault's versions when forming an analysis.
This episode explores some controversial silliness over a bottle of wine that shows up in a classic fairy tale. We take a look at the history, and then casually address the wine Little Red Riding Hood may have actually hauled through the woods to her ailing grandma in rural 19th century Germany. We end with a crazy pairing ... all in the spirit of entertainment. Nicole Jones is the founder of Little Red Riding Hood, Inc., and today she joins us to talk about the hidden crisis of senior transportation in rural communities. Her story shows how one human moment can spark a solution that strengthens healthcare access, local economies, and community belonging. This episode is a testimony to how one moment and one person can inspire change, and a reminder to protect those who came before us so we can be stronger, more whole communities. About Nicole: I am a 35-year-old who has made it her life's mission to help seniors in rural areas after finding a blind senior man lost in the middle of the road. My passions include weight lifting, writing (I have a novel coming out soon as a hopeful way to raise funds for the company), and the Professional Women's Hockey League (go Montreal Victoire!). I live in the small town of Bigler, PA, with my four rescue cats, two turkeys, and twelve ducks. In this episode, we cover: How a chance encounter with a stranded senior sparked a rural transportation startup Why senior mobility is directly tied to rural economic health What makes rural transportation different from Uber or Lyft How technology can work with seniors instead of around them Why honoring aging residents is critical to growing small towns Links + Resources Mentioned: Website: www.LRRHINC.com Email: Nicole@lrrhinc.com Phone number: 412-376-5145 LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/nicoleelizabethjones Want to get your business in front of our audience? Story Prescription: A women's initiation journey from girlhood to womanhood. Story Caution: This story contains adult themes, some gore, and some strong language. It is suitable for children age 12+ and adults. A young girl goes into the forest and on the way to her grandmother's house meets a wolf. If you think you know this story, think again. This is the women's oral version, centuries old. In it, women can think on their feet and can ask the right questions. To support this podcast, you can 'buy me a coffee'. This week's episode splits the cast in half as the queens face the first round of the Rate-a-Queen Talent Show. With strategy, alliances, and game-playing entering the mix, the episode leans into a more competitive, Traitors-style narrative—sometimes successfully, sometimes not. The runway category, “Not Today, Satin,” proves divisive, while the talent show delivers a mix of standout performances, questionable choices, and a few acts that feel underdeveloped. Episode Highlights The Rate-a-Queen Talent Show appears mid-season rather than as a premiere twist, giving the episode stronger pacing than past talent show formats. An alliance storyline takes over the workroom, though its actual impact on the results remains unclear. Mia Starr and Juicy Love Dion land in the top and deliver a strong lip sync that results in a double win. Sierra Mist is placed in the bottom after a spoken-word performance that fails to connect with the judges. Runway: Not Today, Satin The category results in a range of satin-heavy looks, many of which lean into padded or quilted aesthetics. Vida Von T-Star presents a whimsical, Little Red Riding Hood–inspired look. Kenya Pleaser delivers one of her strongest runway presentations, aided by a borrowed coat that elevates the overall silhouette. Jane Don't struggles with both concept and execution, resulting in one of the weaker runway looks of the night. Discord Adams continues to divide the judges with her unconventional walk and punk-inspired presentation. Talent Show Performances Juicy Love Dion delivers a high-energy original song and dance performance that stands out as one of the strongest of the night. Mia Starr brings confidence and attitude with a hip-hop number rooted in classic drag performance style. Nini Coco recreates her viral praying mantis routine, opting for a safer approach rather than expanding the concept. Vida Von T-Star's aerobics routine feels dated and underdeveloped. Darlene Mitchell performs a comedic song that reads more as regional theater than main stage drag. Sierra Mist presents a spoken-word piece that, while personal, lacks structure and impact in a live performance setting. Lip Sync for the Win Mia Starr vs. Juicy Love Dion Song: “Pretty Ugly” by Zara Larsson Both queens deliver strong performances, leading to a double win. While effective, the lip sync does not quite reach the level of a defining or “historic” moment. Bottom of the Week Sierra Mist is left to await next week's lip sync battle after her performance lands her in the bottom. Final Thoughts Episode 5 is a solid entry for a talent show episode. While the alliance storyline feels more theoretical than impactful, the performances—particularly from Juicy Love Dion and Mia Starr—keep the episode engaging. With Part 2 of the Rate-a-Queen Talent Show coming next week, the competition is set up for more significant consequences. Join me on a pleasantly mild winter evening to toast a marshmallow and share my translation of “Rödkappchen,” or “Little Red Cap,” the German version of Little Red Riding Hood as collected by the Brothers Grimm and published in Kinder- und Hausmärchen, their 1812 collection of fairy tales. Mother Goose is not a particular person, although some have tried to claim there was one, but a Mother Goose was a -collection- of beloved stories. Tonight our story takes us into a place of disquiet through dark coniferous forests with copses of fir and spruce trees. Strangely, at times these dark forests seem to bio-locate between Germany and France in Mother Goose stories and fairy tales of the Brother Grimm. Geographically the countries are next door neighbors. Thankfully the world that these stories reside in is an imaginary place where some shockingly mean-spirited humans make life harder for others, curses, vile cannibals and horrific serial killers, even talking wolves are key players as the villains. But also, a magic midnight time-spell, a cursed prince, impractical glass heels, treasure, griddle cakes for grandmother, alchemy: spinning straw into gold, grouchy dwarves, good fairies, angels… The world of fairy tales is a safe space for us to observe the dire consequences of bad judgment and the magic that could happen to everyday people...Image Source: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RRH_Walter_Crane_1875.jpg Description: Crop of Illustration from the toy book Little Red Riding Hood (link to page). Steve is joined by wolf advocate Sarah O'Rourke as they discuss how wolves have been depicted in popular culture - from the fairy tale literature of "Little Red Riding Hood" to "Game of Thrones."

In this episode of How I Met Your Monster, we kick off our Scary Tales triple feature by diving into Neil Jordan's 1984 horror film The Company of Wolves. Inspired by Angela Carter's reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood, this surreal fairy-tale nightmare blends werewolves, dream logic, and body-horror transformations into one of the strangest films of the decade. We break down the film's seven monster reveals, unsettling werewolf transformation effects, and its controversial themes around puberty, repression, folklore, and gender roles. From wolves peeling out of human skin to dream-within-a-dream storytelling, The Company of Wolves challenges traditional fairy tales and refuses simple interpretations.Along the way, we connect the film to classic werewolf lore, fairy-tale history (Charles Perrault), and other surreal horror films that prioritize vibes over clarity. Is The Company of Wolves a feminist fairy tale? A disturbing coming-of-age story? Or just an aggressively weird werewolf movie? We don't fully agree—and that's the point. Timestamp to skip straight to the case: (11:04) A professor from Northeastern University believes “violent crimes increase by as much as 50% on Halloween, which is two times the daily average.” In 2008, Arpana and her neighbors opened their apartment doors for a Halloween party. Arpana dressed as ‘Little Red Riding Hood' for the event. After a night of festivities, Arpana headed to bed at around 3am. When Arpana did not arrive at work on the following Monday, her family in India asked friends to go and check on her. A family friend discovered Arpana's beaten body in her apartment. Now, 17 years later, Arpana's murder remains unsolved. Was she murdered by someone from her apartment complex or could a serial killer like Israel Keyes have been involved? In ep 133 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Anthony Shuster joins Sam and Mark to talk about that thing we hear all the time on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube... the influencer read! We deal with intonation that includes plane coming into land, shopping list, upspeak and de-voicing with vocal fry to learn how to nail this trend we hear more and more.It sparks quite a discussion - but love it or loathe it - we ask the question, could it be useful for your voiceover career?Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to podcast@britishvoiceover.co.ukScript 1How many fairy tales do you recognise here? And why do they all seem to take place in the Middle Ages? Figures like Puss in Boots and Humpty Dumpty are not just recognisable, they are reused and reimagined in contemporary films like Shrek. Look for other familiar characters: Little Red Riding Hood conversing with a wolf, Robin Hood crossing a river, Jack and the beanstalk, and Old Mother Goose soaring in the skies—these and others continue to shape our collective imagination.Script 2I've been doing therapy on and off for about a decade now and I must say it can be very hard finding a therapist that you click with, let alone someone with an open schedule in general. Whether it's dealing with that initial search, location, or connecting with a therapist, doing all of that work only to find out that you don't vibe with that person can be incredibly discouraging. Dave can't make it this week, so we (Megan and Evan) fly duo. Megan kicks things off by reviewing Michael Shanks's horror film TOGETHER (2:31), starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie. It doesn't conclude quite as effectively as she hoped, but it still features some gnarly body horror and has something powerful to say about codependency. Next, we both discuss Kelsey Taylor's drama TO KILL A WOLF (20:12), a compelling modern take on the Little Red Riding Hood tale, which we love for its excellent performances, textured characters, and beautiful cinematography that celebrates the Pacific Northwest. After that, we cover Nick Rowland's crime thriller, SHE RIDES SHOTGUN (45:57), which stars Taron Egerton as a live-wire ex-con who must train his daughter to defend herself against the Neo-Nazis trying to hunt them down. It's violent, it's intense, and it kept us on the edge of our seats until its explosive climax. Lastly, in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Tarem Singh's 2006 storytelling epic, THE FALL, starring Lee Pace!
In an incredibly vivacious episode of Girls Rewatch with Evan and Amelia, we're joined by star of stage and screen, Hollywood's own: Meg Stalter. We discuss how she tweeted it to the top and how her rise to fame is somehow related to the persona of Little Red Riding Hood from “Into the Woods.” We share hats (read: lice) and secrets (read: the struggles of romance in the big city). Meg also discusses making out with the internet's situationships in “Too Much” and why she's addicted to Andrew Scott (us too). Get ready for a wild ride with "Princess Battle Royale" - the most hilarious and action-packed children's book you'll want to read this summer! Author Phaea Crede & Illustrator Jen Hill join host Jed Doherty to discuss their uproarious new picture book that mashes up fairy tale princesses with professional wrestling. Imagine Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Rapunzel throwing down in a wrestling ring - that's exactly what this creative duo has cooked up. The book features a cast of classic and lesser-known princesses battling it out, with the Swan Princess serving as the ultimate villain. Little Red Riding Hood even gets her moment to shine as the towel girl! The inspiration came from Phaea playing with her daughter and creating wrestling moves with princess dolls. She dove deep into professional wrestling, particularly All Elite Wrestling (AEW), to capture the perfect blend of athleticism and storytelling. Jen Hill brought the concept to life with incredibly detailed illustrations packed with hidden fairy tale characters that kids will love discovering. What makes this book special is how it empowers classic princess characters, turning them from damsels in distress into powerful athletes. It's a hilarious way to show kids that princesses can be strong, funny, and totally unexpected. The book also subtly teaches important lessons about not underestimating yourself or others. Parents and kids will love exploring the wild illustrations together, finding new details with each read. The book promises laugh-out-loud moments and plenty of opportunities for imaginative play. Who knows? Your kids might start creating their own wrestling princess characters after reading! "Princess Battle Royale" hits bookstores on August 19th and is perfect for families looking for a unique, energetic, and utterly ridiculous storytime experience. Get ready to body slam boring princess stories and embrace the most entertaining children's book of the year! We also chat with Leslea Wahl who is celebrating her new middle-grade novel "A Summer to Treasure," a heartwarming story about a family road trip through the southwestern United States. The book follows three teens, their parents, and grandmother on a journey that explores family relationships, faith, and personal discovery. Inspired by her own family travels, Wahl weaves in elements of Catholic faith and intergenerational understanding, creating opportunities for meaningful conversations about family history, belief, and personal growth. Set against the backdrop of stunning national parks like the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon, the novel delves into themes of technology's impact on family connections and the importance of sharing untold family stories, all while offering a fun and engaging narrative that encourages readers to look beyond surface-level relationships and appreciate the depth of family bonds. Maybe Betsy is still riding high from the last American Library Association conference she attended, but we're feeling like libraries deserve lots of lovely attention. And what better book to use to that purpose than this well-known collaboration between Patricia C. McKissack and Jerry Pinkney? Can you believe that we've never done a McKissack book before? Pinkney we've definitely done before (including Sam and the Tigers, John Henry, Little Red Riding Hood, and Mirandy and Brother Wind). We discuss how Kate spoils where "someplace special" is pretty early, segregated public benches, rando celebrities, and what it means to work "without permission or pay." Our eighth episode of Lang Fairy Tale tellings is a two-for-one, including both Little Red Riding Hood (which is so short) and Rumpelstiltskin - both tales about freaky masculinity and the dangers of being a lone female. If you are unfamiliar with the Lang Fairy Tales, these seminal collections were assembled between 1889 and 1913 by a married couple, folklorists and translators Nora and Andrew Lang, with most of the work done to compile them completed by Nora, also known as Leonora Blanche Alleyne.Assembled and published in 12 colour-coded "Fairy Books," the corpus the Langs put together included 798 fairy tales from across cultures, many of which had never before been translated into English. They were amongst the most influential books of their time, changing the course of children's literature - although they're hardly just for children, and often deal with quite challenging concepts.Today, purchasing a complete set of the Lang Fairy Books in good condition costs over £4,000 ($5,000+).Thankfully, the collections are all out of copyright, meaning that we can now tell these stories, in podcast form, many for the first time, and share them with a global audience, for free. Our plan is to release the stories between main series of Three Ravens, performing them straight (though with plenty of silly voices) letting the tales speak for themselves in all their madcap, sharp-edged, often quite bizarre glory. The only edits we have made are to amend some culturally-insensitive epithets, which typically pertain to ethnicity, with any such edits made by Eleanor Conlon.Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

“It's the witch from next door!” We take a trip to the theater to discuss the iconic filmed production of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, which was recorded for PBS American Playhouse in 1989. In one of our first opportunities to discuss Sondheim and Broadway on the podcast, we are joined by Andrew Rimby from the Ivory Tower Boiler Room. Many people hold the music from Into the Woods dear, and we are fortunate that its original cast was recorded in the spring of 1989. This Fractured Fairy Tales narrative revolves around a childless baker and his wife, who embark on a quest to start a family after a witch places a curse on them. Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and a Rapunzel origin story are interwoven throughout the story. Bernadette Peters embodies the Witch with unparalleled talent, delivering a captivating performance in every moment. Joanna Gleason, in her Tony Award-winning role portrays the Baker's Wife with incredible grace and depth. Topics discussed include the 1988 Tony Awards, Rob Marshell's 2014 adaptation, and what Bravo Housewife would make the perfect witch. Welcoming back Danielle today for a conversation about fairy tales as living, breathing repositories of ancient wisdom and magick. In The Night House: Folklore, Fairy Tales, Rites, and Magick for the Wise and Wild, bestselling author and word-witch Danielle Dulsky peels back the layers of these timeless narratives to reveal their potent role as guides for navigating today's world. Rich with insight and a deep reverence for the ancestral art of storytelling, Dulsky's latest work reclaims the hidden power of fairy tales as spell books, treasure chests, and sacred rites.Historically kept and transmitted by women, fairy tales are distinguishable from other types of folk tales for their magickal and supernatural elements, and because of this, they were often dismissed as trivial domestic fantasies for women and children. The Night House illuminates how this marginalization kept these stories safe from the witch-hunter's noose and allowed women to safely store and transmit their ancient and sacred wisdom. Each of The Night House's nine chapters is a door to an otherworldly realm, unveiling the spiritual and practical magick embedded in tales like “Little Red Riding Hood “and “Cinderella.” By decoding their “glamour spells” and ancestral rites, Dulksy offers a path for readers to reconnect with the Earth, their ancestors, and their own spirits. Mythic images and Jungian universal archetypes arise, and “old ways” are made visible, revealing the call to continue the medicinal work of story keeping for the modern world.
