INTRO:I'm Hank, longtime podcaster, filmmaker, and YouTuber, and this is my review of Disney's Predator: Badlands.This is a spoiler-filled review of the movie so you've been warned.BUDGET:Predator Badlands cost $105 million dollars to make. It would appear the 20th Century Studios (a Walt Disney Company) is going to make money. That hasn't been a very common occurrence lately in film.SETTINGS:I didn't like the scaled down look of Yautja Prime. From the lack of scale to the hazy look, I wasn't a fan at all. When I say scale I don't simply mean the size of the area. I like to see expansive worlds that are populated. There were parts of the planet Genna that felt expansive but it mostly felt like we were in front of a green screen for two hours. If your budget wasn't $105 million dollars I'd let it slide.CHARACTERS:Dek portrayed by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. The concept is universal so it works for the most part. I simply couldn't wrap my mind around all the emotional dynamics of a human family coming from Predators.Thia & Tessa portrayed by Elle Fanning. The first several minutes of Thia's appearance were like nails on a chalkboard! She was so annoying that I regretted going to the film. Over time, thankfully, that leveled off. That dynamic works in many different types of movies, just not a Predator movie. She was the comic relief that had a strange motivation that I didn't quite understand because they didn't give us any insight on how or why she was so connected to Tessa. The Tessa version was a one-note villain that doesn't hesitate to lie to Mu/TH/UR.Father is portrayed by Reuben de Jong.Kwei is portrayed by Michael Homik.Bud is the baby Grogu style ripoff. She's even referred to as a baby Kalisk. She's funny and extremely important to the story but the comedy distracts from what a typical Predator movie should be. HITS:The concept of going on an adventure to prove your worth is tried and true. The action sequences work well and are exhilarating in most instances.If they were going for a couples or family movie they hit the mark. I was about 20 minutes in when I said to myself, “oh, this is a couples/family movie.”The marketing appears to have worked as the first weekend was pretty solid.I like that they attempted to go in a different direction with the franchise even though it doesn't work for me.MISSES:This is a predator movie in name only.This is a human storyline portrayed by brand name that sells tickets.The overall look and lack of scale detract from the movie.I didn't sign up for this style of Predator movie. Subverting expectations can work when you stay in the confines of the source material (which they didn't).The father son conflict dynamic is pushed beyond belief.The brother references being saved by Dek but they don't show it.The hunt seems irrelevant to the story which is simply a revenge story. Especially once Dek knows he won't kill the kalisk. So why are we going on this adventure again?They borrowed from too many franchises and genres to list.MOVIE SCORE: 5/10DIRECTION: CWRITING: DCINEMATOGRAPHY: CPOST PRODUCTION (INCLUDES: SCORE, SFX, COLOR GRADE) : DREWATCHABILITY: D1 Awful content = Fails on every single level.2-4 Poor = Terrible on almost every front.5 Mediocre = Some of the content is...

Eh, Yo! This week we dive into the pinball audio on Dune and Winchester Mystery House with Jeff of Dirty Pool Pinball. Jeff Started his channel Dirty Pool Pinball in the last year and since he has done some awesome things. Jeff made a new Pinball audio kit for Twilight Zone. Jeff has a background in audio and SFX. Jeff even just released a pinball audio package for free for homebrew pinball builders to use. That background ended up landing him a position at Barrels of Fun after doing an interview with the owner of the company David Van Es. After making a joke about them not having a sound guy Jeff found himself applying for the position. He was brought in worked on Dune and then started his next project which was Winchester Mystery House. He has done all of the pinball audio for those two games and there will be more in the future.Jeff and I recently meet at Pinball Expo and after meeting I had to have him on the show and share his story. "Quietly ambitious and a bit unhinged." Somewhere in the Midwest, a talented young couple is quietly building an escape room empire. Their company, 60 to Escape, has over 12 different escape rooms across 3 locations, a puzzle-filled mini-golf experience, and a haunt so extensive and scenic that it was used as the set for a horror movie called Haunt Season on Amazon Prime. Stephen Kristof literally has entertainment in his blood. His parents owned a family entertainment center, and he grew up bouncing around mini-golf, go carts, and fixing the arcade machines. Growing up, Stephen always wanted to work at a haunt, but he was too young. So at the ripe young age of thirteen, he presented his parents with business plan for opening up his own haunt, and his first venture was born. In the course of running the haunt, they brought in a talented young SFX makeup artist named Stevie Calabrese (now Stevie Kristof). During haunt season, she manages four other artists as they get eighty performers into costumes and makeup in under two hours. Stephen and Stevie met, fell in love, and became "The Steves." They now run their immersive entertainment ventures together, crafting and creating much of it themselves, along with their team of talented folks. If either of them look familiar, you may have seen them on a reality show. Stephen was a contestant on Season 1 of Holey Moley, a zany mini-golf reality competition show, and Stevie was a contestant on Season 9 of Face Off, a special effects makeup reality competition show. I really enjoyed hearing them talk about their commitment to the customer experience, and their dedication to production value and creativity. The Connecticut Yankee atomic power plant was one of the earliest commercial nuclear reactors in New England.  Though it was dismantled at the turn of the 21st century, its legacy remains, both for the landscape of the Connecticut River Valley where it once stood, and for contemporary debates about energy today.  This episode explores the plant's life and afterlife, the activists who opposed it, and the promises and perils of nuclear power in the 1960s and today, through the reminiscences of Paul Gionfriddo, a former state legislator and longtime president of People's Action for Clean Energy, a group that has advocated for conservation and renewable energy in Connecticut since the early 1970s.   This episode is presented by Dr. Amrys Williams and Jon Kozak. Williams is a historian of science, technology,and the environment who serves as the Executive Director of the Connecticut League of Museums.  Her recent research projects have focused on anti-nuclear activism, radioecology, and the public interpretation of nuclear places. Kozak is a graduate student in Public History at Central Connecticut State University and the Communications Manager for the Connecticut League of Museums.
