In this episode, I'm joined by Selma Zollman, a music therapist and member of Brazilian Voices—a nonprofit female vocal group based in South Florida. For over 22 years, Brazilian Voices has been bringing the tranquil sounds of Bossa Nova into hospitals, medical facilities, and schools, uplifting patients, families, and healthcare workers through music. What You'll Hear:Pam's personal journey with grief and how art and music can provide solace in times of loss.Selma Zollman's story of following her passion for music therapy and joining Brazilian Voices. The transformative power of harmony—how Brazilian Voices uses soft, multi-part singing to create a gentle ambiance in hospitals, allowing patients, families, and staff to simply “be.”Why the group's presence is about illumination, not cure, and how performing with “no expectations” brings peace for both singers and listeners.Heartfelt anecdotes about the response from patients (including those at end-of-life), their families, and healthcare workers touched by the music.Selma's thoughts on the importance of expanding similar music programs to more hospitals and healthcare settings, despite the challenges around privacy and logistics.Ways to follow and learn more about Brazilian Voices, including their Instagram, Facebook, and website.Learn More:Find out more about Brazilian Voices:Instagram: @brazilianvoicesFacebook: Brazilian VoicesWebsite: brazilianvoices.orgConnect with the Show:Host Pam Uzzell welcomes your feedback and stories. Cecil Bartholomew aka Mr. B was born in Curepe, Trinidad, attended Presentation College in Chaguanas, worked at the license office then moved to the US to study. He gained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute in New York, bolstered by further studies in Artificial Intelligence at MIT as well as jazz and classical guitar. He served as an International Engineering Manager at Electronic Signature Analysis Technologies with Xerox for 30 years, in the US, South America, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australia, innovating strategic technologies to enhance component reusability. He returned to the Caribbean in 2000 as ICT director for OECS [Organization of eastern Caribbean States] under the leadership of the then Prime Minister of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, Dr. Keith C. Mitchell. Mr. B resides in Saint George's, Grenada. He is a world-renowned Classical/Jazz guitar/Arranger/Composer, celebrated for his unique fusion of tropical rhythms and jazz structures and performed as a backup guitarist for visiting artists while he was active in New York City and had a significant performance history during the 1980s and 1990s. Although classically trained, Jazz became the main thrust. After a solo performance Gloucestershire England other performances occurred in Holland, Germany, France, and Australia, when a classical solo album was sold worldwide. Cecil also has two CDs. With a profound passion for music, he coined the term “Kingdom-Guitar,” emphasizing his commitment to integrate music with a powerful message. Cecil's musical journey began in Trinidad and continued in Grenada, where he developed a deep appreciation for the guitar under the mentorship of jazz legends Laurindo Almeida and Kenny Burrell. His compositions often reflect the Bossa Nova rhythm blended with cheerful lyrical jazz solos, creating a vibrant musical landscape in his works. Bartholomew's style, best described as "Tropical Jazz Fusion," artfully combines rock, calypso, and jazz standards, while also incorporating original compositions. As the composer and guitarist for the band, Bartholomew leads the ensemble's exploration of tropical jazz fusion, enhancing their sound through acoustic and electric guitar arrangements. The music produced is a harmonious blend of original works and creatively rearranged covers. Cecil was leader, composer and arranger of 2 bands: Akasa in the US and Quiet Fire in Grenada. His contributions in composition and arrangement helped shape the band's unique sound. He also played the double tenor steel pan and is a dedicated music instructor at Archibald Avenue Music since 2009.Presently retired, Mr. B performs weekly at the prestigious Calabash Hotel in Grenada and at special venues, mostly as a solo artist for the Government of Grenada and at other private events, while recording, teaching and changing the minds and hearts of youths through his music.A man of deep faith and conviction, Bartholomew sees music as a spiritual passage and a vehicle for societal change. He emphasizes discipline, effort, and heartfelt communication throughout, as well as advocating for women.

"Henri Salvador est un Voyou" é o título do terceiro disco do cantor francês Thibaud Vanhooland, 35 anos, cujo nome artístico significa "bandido", em português. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to musician Jon Klages, grandson of musician and Hi-Fi proponent and record label owner Enoch Light. Our conversation with Jon began with understanding just who his grandfather was. A classically trained musician, Enoch founded his first group, Enoch Light & His Orchestra & later Enoch Light and the Light Brigade before World War II. Wildly popular in upper class New York society, Light went on to found one of the most unique independent record labels, well, ever. Vinyl collectors today will know Light's Command Records & Project 3 firstly for its unique, minimalist artwork from renowned artist Josel Albers. From classical to pop to Space Age Bachelor Pop to popular soundtrack hits and more, Light was nothing if not proficient. From albums like Persuasive Percussion to The Private Life of a Private Eye, Lights albums were visually stunning first and foremost. But take a listen to any of his albums from composers as varied as Doc Severinson, Dick Hyman, Tommy Mottola & the landmark album from The Free Design, the albums were recorded for the best audio fidelity available. The albums sound terrific. We discuss this with Jon & loved hearing about how his own mother played a role in all these recordings too. If you love the Moog, horns, Bossa Nova and more mid-sixties exotica, you must find these albums for your collection. We also talk to Jon about his experiences in the studio with his grandfather as well as his own recordings. Part of the fabled Hoboken indie scene of the 1980s, Jon release a new album in 2021, Fabulous Twilight and has a new album coming in 2025 as well. We discuss how Jon became a singer/songwriter, how his passion for being around music led to a career in it and much more. Plus, we hear much about Jon's father, a seven-time Emmy winner for lighting design who worked with everyone from Muhammad Ali to Ernie Kovacs. This is one episode you do not want to miss and it's happening right now. Take a listen to the Rarified Heir Podcast with Jon Klages, right now.

Salve! This is a bonus episode for Brazuca Sounds paid subscribers!Every episode is a different song. This is the song today:"Rapaz de Bem" by Johnny AlfJohnny Alf was once described by the New York Times as "a Black pianist that helped birth Bossa Nova, and his story is rarely told", so today we're talking about a song that arguably inspired the way João Gilberto played his guitar and Tom Jobim's idea for the song "Desafinado". In "Rapaz de Bem", Alf describes the life's priorities of a young man with a humorous reflection. Access the Translatiosmith for a complete lyric analysis. As much as we discussed the song, we also talked about his career and his pioneering role in bossa nova, a term he actually hated .

We've got a unique twofer for you this week. First up is Mr. Big frontman Eric Martin! Eric had been at it for a decade before Mr. Big happened. He fronted bands in the Bay Area and recorded a solo albums that were as poppy as it gets. Luckily, Mr. Big worked out and they just completed their "last" tour and released the live album, The Big Finish as a memento. They've been extra busy beecause they also released a new album earlier this year. He didn't have much time, but we get into his early days, the post "To Be With You" period, and what his plans are now. Then we hear from Bossa Nova royalty Bebel Gilberto! Her dad was the legendary Joao and her step mom was Astrid, but she's built her own incredible career taking her native music into the future. She chats with us for a bit while making lunch about it all. Enjoy! www.mrbigsite.com www.bebelgilberto.com
John is joined by Pixies, Charles Thompson (aka Black Francis), and producer Tom Dalgety, to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the band's latest album ‘The Night The Zombies Came'. The Pixies are an American alternative rock band widely acclaimed as one of the pioneers of the late 1980s rock movement. Their first three albums - Surfer Rosa (1988), Dolittle (1989) and Bossanova (1990) - defined an era as well as earning the band much critical success. The Pixies have influenced numerous prominent artists including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, The Strokes and Weezer. Since re-forming in 2004, they have maintained a steady creative output, working closely with producer Tom Dalgety. Catching up at Strongroom Studios, Charles and Tom share stories from their album writing process, including the last minute track that Tom snuck onto the record, the inspiration that came from trips around the English countryside, and the creative results of Charles's temper tantrums (which included his songwriting notebook ending up on the studio roof!). Tracks discussed: The Vegas Suite, I Hear You Mary, Jane (The Night the Zombies Came) TAPE IT Thanks to our friends at Tape It for supporting the podcast.
