I am very excited to launch a very special series for Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar. May is Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM), which annually celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of Jewish Americans to the United States.  I am honored to welcome my dear friend and mentor, Joanne J-Bird Phillips, to the podcast. I first met J-Bird in New York City through our mutual friend and former guest, Beatrice Kimmel. She and I instantly bonded and became fast friends. I love her zest for life, and it was Beshert (Yiddish for “destiny”) that the stars finally aligned for her to come on the show for our third JAHM special.  Born in The Bronx and raised on Long Island, NY, Joanne Phillips grew up in a family of professional drummers and band leaders. Having a natural rhythm since childhood, Joanne's father taught her to play drums with brushes when she was seven, and her first song was "Come Fly with Me" by Frank Sinatra. She grew up listening to Swing, Motown, Bossa Nova, and Rock 'n' Roll, and honed her drum skills on a full orange sparkle drum kit that her family bought for her. At age sixteen, Joanne was asked to join a local garage band of teenage boys who needed someone to play their cover of "Wipeout" by The Surfaris correctly. She stepped in and nailed it.     Hence began Joanne's lifelong love of music and live performance.  Fast forward to the late 70's, after Joanne had moved to Long Beach, NY, and raised two children of her own in the arts -- her son, an alumnus of Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in NYC, and one of the metro area's popular freelance Improv coaches, and her daughter, a SAG-AFTRA TV actress and comedian/comedy writer working in LA.Over the years, Joanne witnessed how many music and arts programs were evaporating and eventually terminated, due to a lack of funding and/or support from the government, as well as certain folks with no interest in keeping arts programs alive, resulting in the arts being put on the back burner in the education system. Joanne remained an avid supporter of an arts education platform for children. She saw how it created positive experiences for her own kids (and many other youths) and witnessed how even a basic arts education enriched lives of youths on many levels for years into their adulthood.   In 2012, Joanne founded J-Bird Music for the Arts, Inc., with the vision of reviving arts programs by providing much-needed equipment, instruments, and resources to enrich the lives of youth through arts education. She wanted to bring that same joy, excitement, and creativity to youth everywhere, especially in underserved or underfunded areas.    Through J-Bird Music for the Arts, Joanne brings her vision alive. This week's Talkhouse Podcast features a conversation between two ridiculously talented young songwriter/guitarists in the early days of what will surely be interesting careers: Mei Semones and John Roseboro. Semones famously found her passion for guitar by watching the “Johnny B. Goode” scene in Back to the Future, which led her to music school and the kind of genre-spanning passion that feels refreshingly unfiltered. Sometimes she'll play delicate, jazz-inflected acoustic songs while singing in Japanese; the next minute it's more familiar indie-pop that adds a bit of bossa nova or some shredding. The fact that it doesn't make sense is what makes it make sense, if you get what I mean. Semones was a big hit at this year's experimental-leaning Big Ears Festival, and she's also got a big social media following—that's an odd crossover, or at least I think it is. Next week she'll open a string of shows for American Football on the west coast before heading down to charm Australia. Her first full-length was last year's Animaru, and she followed it recently with an EP called Kurage, which includes a song made with today's other guest, John Roseboro. Roseboro has called his music “post-Bossa Nova” or sometimes just “post-Bossa,” but that only tells part of the story. He's a thoughtful, observant lyricist who's great at building a vibe and then taking it to unexpected places. Like Semones, he lives in Brooklyn, though he ended up there via a strange route that took him to mortuary school and some time among the Amish. His latest full-length is 2024's Fools, but since then he's released a charming cover of the classic “Close To You” that removes a lot of the cheese associated with various other versions over the years. He also collaborated with Semones on a track from her EP that recounts a story of his lost tooth and a meeting on a subway platform. Check out that song, “Tooth Fairy,” right here. Bekannt wird Ulrich Gerhard Scheurlen unter dem Namen Ulrich Tukur. Der Nachname ist eingedeutschtes Französisch: „tout court“, also „alles kurz“. Er kommt im Juli 1957 im hessischen Viernheim zur Welt. Der Vater stammt aus Stuttgart, die Mutter aus Ulm. Seine Kindheit und Jugend verbringt er im spießig-schwäbischen Familienkreis in Großkrotzenburg, Großburgwedel und Wedemark, also: bei Hannover. Es folgen das Abitur, ein High-School-Abschluss in Boston, der Wehrdienst, ein Studium in Tübingen, die Schauspielausbildung in Stuttgart, erste Film-, dann Theater-Engagements ab 1982, zwei Ehen, zwei Töchter. Außerdem gründet er 1995 seine Band Ulrich Tukur und die Rhythmus Boys, mit denen er mehrsprachig Jazz, Swing, Schlager, Chanson, Cha-Cha-Cha, Tango, Bossa Nova und mehr spielt. Zu sehen war er bisher in nicht weniger als 50 Kinofilmen und über 60 Fernsehfilmen. Darunter 13 Fälle als exzentrischer Tatort-Ermittler Felix Murot. Hinzu kommen zahlreiche Musik- und Hörbuchveröffentlichungen. Und als wäre das alles nicht genug, veröffentlicht Tukur im Oktober 2019 seinen ersten Roman „Der Ursprung der Welt“. Weil er vieles gut kann, wurde er seit Mitte der 80er mit diversen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Der Podcast wird nicht aufdecken können, wie Tukur das alles gelingt, vielmehr will Jan Schwarzkamp die Gelegenheit nutzen und sich von seinem Gast aufklären lassen, welche musikalische Sozialisation er genossen und wie sich die nunmehr 30-jährige Geschichte seiner Rhythmus Boys entwickelt hat. O intelectual, escritor e poeta modernista Mario de Andrade foi pioneiro nos estudos sobre a música popular brasileira. Entre as décadas de 1920 e 1940, o autor de Macunaíma recolheu e pesquisou cantos, danças e tradições folclóricas em diversas regiões do Brasil, em busca de uma cultura brasileira autêntica. Pela primeira vez, ensaios, críticas, artigos e poemas de Mario de Andrade sobre a música brasileira foram traduzidos para o francês e publicados pela editora da prestigiosa Philharmonie de Paris (Filarmônica de Paris). Adriana Brandão, da RFI em Paris O livro "Écrits sur la Musique Populaire Brésilienne" (Escritos sobre a Música Popular Brasileira), de Mario de Andrade, foi organizado por Pedro Fragelli, especialista na obra do escritor modernista. A tradução é de Mathieu Dosse, e a edição é ilustrada com fotografias das expedições de Mario de Andrade pelo Brasil. O organizador Pedro Fragelli, que esteve em Paris para o lançamento, destaca o caráter único da obra em francês. “Não existe no Brasil um volume que reúna uma parte significativa dos ensaios de Mario de Andrade sobre música, nem que articule esses textos com as fotografias de suas expedições. Uma edição como essa faz falta no país”, diz. As traduções dos textos para o francês também são inéditas. O tradutor Mathieu Dosse observa que os ensaios de Mario de Andrade preservam a oralidade presente na ficção do autor. “Ele usa expressões originais, elipses e uma ortografia particular. Optamos por não reproduzir isso literalmente em francês, mas procurei manter a oralidade e a proximidade com o leitor, porque mesmo nos ensaios o Mario dialoga e narra de forma muito generosa”, conta Dosse. Intelectual brasileiro mais importante da primeira metade do século XX Mario de Andrade fundou a etnomusicologia no Brasil e promoveu uma verdadeira revolução na produção artística nacional. Ele foi um dos principais expoentes do modernismo brasileiro, ao lado de Oswald de Andrade e Sérgio Milliet, entre outros. Mas no prefácio de “Escritos sobre a Música Brasiliera”, Pedro Fragelli afirma que Mario é o intelectual brasileiro mais importante da primeira metade do século XX. O especialista sabe que sua afirmação é passível de contestação e crítica, mas sustenta a sua tese. Segundo ele, “a intervenção cultural de Mario de Andrade é incomparável pela abrangência e pela influência. Sua obra ultrapassa a literatura e inclui música, artes plásticas, cultura popular, costumes e dança. Além disso, ele compreendia a cultura como uma construção coletiva, dialogava intensamente com intelectuais de todo o país e acabou se tornando um centro de articulação da vida cultural brasileira”. O conjunto excepcional de documentos reunidos por Mario de Andrade sobre a música brasileira "diversa e variada" constitui um de seus maiores legados. O autor acreditava que a singularidade dos ritmos nacionais estava justamente na diferença ou no desvio em relação aos padrões da música clássica ou tradicional europeia. Mario de Andrade começou a escrever sobre música brasileira nos anos 1920, quando músicos e ritmos do país começavam a ganhar projeção internacional. Para Pedro Fragelli, no entanto, a singularidade defendida por Mario era muito diferente do exotismo que fazia sucesso no exterior. “Ele se preocupava com a valorização excessiva de traços exóticos para agradar ao gosto europeu. Seu projeto buscava construir uma música nacional capaz de contribuir para a música dita universal”, afirma. Visionário Para o tradutor Mathieu Dosse, Mario de Andrade foi um visionário. “Ele falava de uma outra época, mas já percebia que a música brasileira se internacionalizaria. Não sei o que teria pensado da Bossa Nova, mas tinha um conhecimento profundo da música popular, especialmente do Nordeste, e defendia que ela servisse de base para a música erudita no Brasil. Era um nacionalismo positivo, voltado para o que o Brasil podia oferecer ao mundo.” Apesar de escritos há cerca de cem anos, os textos de Mario de Andrade revelam ao público francês um Brasil ainda pouco conhecido na Europa. “Eles mostram uma música muito mais complexa, variada e rica do que se imagina, cheia de contradições internas" avalia Pedro Fragelli. Além disso, revelam um país multifacetado e uma produção intelectual cosmopolita, mas autônoma em relação aos parâmetros culturais europeus,  Mario de Andrade "mostra a possibilidade de desprovincianizar o pensamento nos países de origem colonial", resume o especialista. Por enquanto, "Écrits sur la Musique Populaire Brésilienne" existe apenas em francês, mas Pedro Fragelli já trabalha em uma edição em português que reunirá, em um único volume, o trabalho revolucionário de Mario de Andrade sobre a música popular brasileira. Os textos defendem uma visão nacionalista crítica, sem qualquer forma de patriotismo simplista. Vicente e Marianna é a dupla formada pelo compositor e multi‑instrumentista Vincent Muller e pela compositora e cantora Marianne Feder. Juntos, eles propõem uma fusão elegante e ensolarada entre a chanson française e ritmos brasileiros – bossa nova, samba, forró –, sempre inspirados pela velha guarda da MPB. Ao lado dos músicos brasileiros Julio Gonçalves e Ricardo Feijão, acabam de lançar seu segundo álbum, “So Samba”, destaque do Balada Musical. Daniella Franco, da RFI em Paris Vincent e Marianne se conheceram há cerca de 20 anos e, desde então, criaram diversos projetos em parceria, mas a ideia de formar uma dupla só ganhou forma em 2017. O primeiro álbum, Vicente e Marianna, lançado em 2021, nasceu com a proposta de construir uma ponte entre os ritmos do Brasil e da França, brincando de forma poética com as duas línguas. Cinco anos depois, o novo trabalho da dupla, “So Samba”, apresenta 11 faixas. Entre elas estão “Avant de partir”, adaptação em francês de “Eu te amo”, de Chico Buarque, e um cover de “Eu não tenho ninguém”, de Baden Powell, gravado ao vivo no Studio Gobelins, em Paris. A faixa que dá nome e abre o álbum é descrita por Vincent e Marianne como “uma receita secreta, ao mesmo tempo apimentada, suave e açucarada”. *** O Balada Musical vai ao ar todos os sábados nos programas da RFI Brasil e também pode ser ouvido no Spotify e no Deezer.

Eydie Gormé fue una cantante estadounidense de origen sefardí, nacida el 16 de agosto de 1928 en el Bronx, Nueva York, y fallecida el 10 de agosto de 2013 en Las Vegas, Nevada. Conocida por su voz cálida y potente, Gormé se destacó en la música pop, jazz y latina, y se convirtió en una de las voces más reconocidas de la música estadounidense. *Infancia y Carrera* Gormé creció en una familia judía sefardí, y desde pequeña se interesó por la música. Comenzó a cantar en un programa de radio infantil a los 3 años y se graduó en la escuela secundaria William Howard Taft en 1946. There are a few perks to running every aspect of this site and podcast, the biggest being picking who I want to interview (and avoiding whomever I don't). Part of that, sometimes, is using film music as an excuse to interview bands that I just broadly like. Enter: Chat Pile. The Oklahoma noise rock band has one score under their belt, the 2022 indie crime flick Tenkiller, which they released as a score album after their debut God's Country, and have provided some songs for other films, most recently a track for the end credits to V/H/S/Halloween. Not to mention, they routinely talk about movies, including during their gigs. All perfect hooks to have them on, and so today I'm talking with vocalist Raygun Busch and guitarist Luther Manhole. As such, we jump around quite a bit: from their experience scoring Tenkiller, how movies brought them together and provide a mutual love, and some recent (and not to recent) scores that they've enjoyed (I'll note that at one point Ray is talking about the Bossa Nova score for Black Orpheus before getting interrupted by his dog...). We wrap up on a bit of a detour, actually talking about the economics of albums and touring, and how much a role cost of living plays into that.
