This week on "Hot Takes" episode 46, after a brief hiatus, Skelly and Shiro pulled Philly area act Geo Metro for the show! Eccentric, well-spoken, and a heavyweight in the Philadelphia independent electronic music scene, it made perfect sense for us to bring Andrew on; and he kept us entertained with his thoughts and stories about Britpop, Bossa Nova, wall-of-sound in music, and his chain-smoking sixty-year-old former roommate from Iraq. A man of many aliases, Geo Metro can also be found online as Aesir Archivist, Bonneville, Mad Gear, and Vimanas. He's released albums on several labels, including Philly's own Virtua94 Records, has released albums in obscure formats like burner phones with the album preloaded, and has performed alongside former guests Mr. Hideyoshi, Toadofsky, Vincent Remember, and Skelly himself at Terminally Chill. Incredibly learned, patient, and knowledgeable, Geo Metro was a picture perfect guest for the show. Over the course of our two hour broadcast, we discussed ego death, the importance of water treatment workers as artists, and airbrushed thugged out Looney Tunes T-shirts. Hot takes kind of took a back burner during our night with Geo Metro, but we did get to hear some trash talk about the Philadelphia noise music scene, discuss the practice of naming samples online, and hear some album recommendations and a thought regarding physical vs. digital media courtesy of "Hot Takes" veteran Indy Advant. If you missed out on our live visit with Geo Metro, why not review it right now!? "Hot Takes" is a safe space for all opinions! Join the conversation at https://linktr.ee/hottakesvapor

Taste Radio's hosts pondered the potential of innovative, yet imaginary, concepts; examined why discontinued brands and products – including a line of high-profile energy shots – failed to make it; and riffed upon a bevy of new snacks and drinks. This episode also features an interview with Alexandra Dempster and Isabelle Steichen, the co-founders of Lupii, an innovative platform brand that markets lupini bean-based foods. Launched in 2020, Lupii debuted with a line of plant-based protein bars highlighted by its hero ingredient, which the brand promotes as “a high-fiber legume that has 2x more protein than chickpeas and 3x more protein than eggs.” In August 2022, Lupii expanded with a three-SKU line of high-protein and high fiber pastas that contain significantly less carbs than those made with traditional ingredients. The brand is represented in hundreds of chain and independent retailers, primarily in the Northeast, Midwest and Pacific Northwest, including Whole Foods, Safeway and Jewel-Osco. Dempster and Steichen spoke about Lupii's origins and their alignment as co-founders, how they shifted from “survival mode” amid the early months of the pandemic to a focus on thoughtful growth at retail, how they were able to attract interest and funding from angel investors and their vision and plan to develop a platform brand. Show notes: 0:37: How To Meet Top Whole Foods Executives, Scotch Spray, The Fiddy/Craven Connection – Less than a week from BevNET's Meetup at the company's Newton, MA HQ, the hosts highlighted recently announced speakers for BevNET Live Summer 2023 and wondered if some products conceptualized as April Fool's jokes should be commercialized. Ray stirred the pot with his bag of discontinued brands, including those of a cap-activated chia beverage, a blue recovery drink and 50 Cent's energy shot, along with a brain-boosting product with a rather controversial name, before chatting about a highly anticipated collaboration between two massive companies, super-premium chorizo and better-for-you refreshment drinks. 31:51: Interview: Alexandra Dempster & Isabelle Steichen, Co-Founders, Lupii – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif met with Lupii's co-founders at Expo West 2023, where Steichen spoke about how a diverse population in her native country of Luxembourg exposed her to Lupini beans and their nutritional value as compared to other sources of plant and animal-based protein, why she sought to find a co-founder to launch to the brand and how she and Alexandra formed a bond and common vision for the company. They also discussed how they applied consumer insights from early DTC sales to a brick and mortar retail strategy, identifying Lupii's core consumer, how they articulate the brand's “trifecta of benefits,” iterating amid growth, achieving a “sweet spot” within the pasta category and their perspective on venture funding for women-owned and -led brands. Brands in this episode: Laphroaig, Fly By Jing, Paqui, Sanzo, Ithaca Hummus, Hendrick's Gin, Moju, Neuro, 5-hour Energy, Coca-Cola, Jack Daniel's, Simply, Fanta, Lentiful, Funky Mello, Skippy, Justin's, Teddy's, Tip Top Cocktails, Togronis, Crafthouse Cocktails, Three Sisters Meats, Paro, Update, Phocus, Petal, Bossa Nova, Spindrift, Lemonback, Lupii, Oatly, Banza

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to musician and ace copy editor Jon Klages, whose grandfather, musician/producer/record label owner Enoch Light likely was the genesis of the Stereo revolution. Yes, you heard me right, classically trained violinist Enoch Light was one of, if not the first, to realize that by placing more than one microphone in a recording studio, you could create a fuller, more dynamic sound to your then, Hi-Fi, and now Stereo system today. Whoa. While Enoch released 25 plus records in his career, it was his record labels Grand Award, Project 3 and Command that really are his legacy. The labels, specifically Command, were known for their audio fidelity as well as their groundbreaking abstract artwork, gatefold sleeves and extensive liner notes that make them so unique. Be it space age pop, jazz, classical, film scores, Bossa Nova or anything else under the sun, Enoch Light was a pioneer in bringing the best music to the consumer in the best light (pun intended) possible. We talk about Jon's being in the recording studio with Enoch and mother Julie Light Klages at many sessions Enoch oversaw with his pipe at the ready. We also spoke about Jon's father, lighting designer William Klages, winner of seven Emmy awards, who worked with both Ernie Kovacs and host Josh Mills' mother Edie Adams at NBC in the early 1950s. We talk to john about his own musical career in the 80s as part of the “Hoboken Sound” with The Individuals, his move to Los Angeles and playing with the LA music scene surrounding the Paisley Underground and his 2021 solo debut Fabulous Twilight. Oh and did we mention that Jon copy edited the upcoming Ernie Kovacs book Ernie in Kovacsland from Fantagraphics coming July 18? Or that he's copy editing Edie Adams second autobiography as well? No? Well, take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast for some serious greatness.
De Copacabana a la rua Madureira en passant par Ipanema.
We've got a cure for this winter's Seasonal Affective Disorder: the sunny Samba stylings of master Sax-smith Stan Getz along with the sensual murmurings of Astrud Gilberto - in one of the most "audio-erotic" recordings of all time: THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA.Jobim's masterpiece started the Bossa Nova craze, and became on of the most covered songs in history, and your dogged musicologists, Bill and Rich, will attempt to uncover why. From: https://theculturetrip.com/south-america/brazil/articles/the-mystery-behind-the-girl-from-ipanema/So who was the girl that inspired such beautiful lyrics? She was Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto (now Heloísa Pinheiro) who was just 17 years old at the time. She lived in Ipanema and would go out shopping or to the beach, often accompanied by wolf-whistles from locals. Morales later wrote a book called Revelação: a verdadeira Garota de Ipanema – Revealed: The Real Girl from Ipanema – where he describes Pinheiro and the effect she unintentionally had on him and Jobim. He says she is the true paradigm of a Carioca girl, “the golden girl, mixed with flower and mermaid, full of light and grace but whose vision is also sad, because she carries with her, on the way to the sea, the feeling of what passes, of beauty that is not only ours – it is a gift of life in its beautiful and melancholy and steady flow.”This song propelled Pinheiro into the spotlight where she became a successful model, including modeling as a Playboy Playmate in 1987 and again in 2003 when aged 58. “The Girl from Ipanema” was also used during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympics in Rio, which consequently led to the song being streamed on Spotify an incredible 40,000 times a day seeing it once again entering the Billboard charts in the U.S.

If there are two genres that are grossly misunderstood by masses (and frankly abused) through pop culture soundtracks…they’re Christmas music and Bossa Nova. For the former, we’ve been conditioned to expect schmaltzy exchanges or comic Griswold-esque catastrophe. For the latter, it’s typically a toss-up between elevator music and sexy-yet-playful moods. Do'a inhabits multiplicities. A PhD student of mathematics at the University of Maryland, she is also a former artist-in-residence at Strathmore Arts Center. Her influences range from Bossa Nova to Albanian folk music, and she sings in a variety of languages, including Spanish and Portuguese. It's worth noting Do'a spoke neither of these languages growing up: she is the daughter of Iranian-Italian and Iranian-German parents who immigrated to Albania to share the teachings of the Baha'i Faith. In this episode, Jack talks to Do'a about and the many spaces she occupies and how she is still evolving as a musician. Climb with us on this week's Soul Ladder Music! Anuraag is a second generation settler based on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country. Their practice as a DJ is layered and improvisational, favouring hi-def, glossy textures, organic percussion and fluid polyrhythms, drawing connections between traditional and hypermodern instrumentation. It is an inimitable style that has led them to play for global institutions including RA, Bossa Nova, NTS, and Boiler Room, and support legendary artists including Helena Hauff, DJ Sprinkles, and u-Ziq. ""This mix is a live recording from a show at Sideway, a gorgeous little club situated on Ngunnawal/Ngambri Country. I played the middle slot between two DJs with a very different style to me, and each other. I wanted to bridge the gap between the two by matching the energy of the opening DJ then trying to disorient the crowd through a lot of tempo and groove switchups, so that when the closer began the 120ish stuff they planned to play would feel like a relief and draw the crowd together. I had a pretty challenging time playing - I've been very used to local crowds that I know and trust to stick with me through my constant shifts in direction. I had a bonkers week in the lead-up and only had about 30 minutes to prep in the club. But I was surprised how happy I was with the recording on listening back, and think it gives a fairly accurate slice of what I tend to play out lately in a functional, club, party context." pic by ohgeeiz

Today on our show, we bring you a story by one of Allison's 7th grade students. She spent two months teaching English to 7th and 8th graders at a private school in Miami, and because she's her, she assigned personal essay after personal essay. She learned about their parents, what they eat for dinner, their nannies, grandparents, and favorite sport. They resisted getting personal, the same way Allison did when she started writing. Most people seem to struggle with writing about themselves, getting vulnerable, telling a story that might get them made fun of. But, not Webber. Webber is a kid who draws in class to stay focused. He pays attention and asks questions. When he speaks, his words matter. By the end of the first week of school, Allison had an inkling Webber was brilliant and unique. The Hispanic Heritage Month's Essay Contest was optional for the school but a graded class assignment for Allison's class. The students worked on the 500-word essay in class and those who weren't Hispanic were stumped. Allison told them to write about being stumped. On the day the essay was due, Webber handed in an incredibly mature and well-written essay. A week later, at the culmination of the week's Hispanic heritage celebration, Webber won the competition. Today, we bring you Webber's essay, completely written on his own. Allison did no editing. What's cool about this essay and many essays that are created from a writing prompt, is that Webber played the piano and let his mind wander. On this episode we talk about ways to relax our minds so we can write--either through being quiet, playing a sport, or using another art form. Webber is a 12-year-old student at Ransom Everglades Middle School in Coconut Grove, Florida. His story is called The Bossa Nova.Writing Class Radio is hosted and produced by Allison Langer, Andrea Askowitz, and Zorina Frey.
