In 1834, the British Royal Navy ship, the Chanticleer, was dealing with a terrible cockroach infestation. The ship's surgeon, however, wrote enthusiastically about the stowaways, describing them as a “most valuable insect.” Their shining characteristic? Bedbugs have tormented humans for millennia, so detested that their mere mention can make hearts race and arms itch. So why are these unwelcomed houseguests so difficult to defeat? There are approximately 100 species of bedbugs. Thankfully, only three feed on humans, all of which are chestnut brown, half a centimeter long, and incredibly flat— as long as they haven't eaten recently. To find their next blood meal, bedbugs follow the biological signals our bodies release, such as carbon dioxide, odor, and body heat. Once located, they use their straw-like mouthparts to inject a cocktail of proteins that dilate blood vessels for easier feeding, along with an anesthetic to block any pain that might give them away. These compounds and other foreign proteins are what can trigger our immune response. While some people's bodies don't react to these bites, others develop itchy, red lesions that can stick around for several weeks. And these bites can appear anywhere on the body— it's a myth that they always appear in neat rows or sets of three. While they're not considered social insects like bees or ants, bedbugs cooperate in fascinating ways. They huddle together in piles, called refugia, stacking their flat bodies within wall cracks or furniture, which is thought to help them preserve precious moisture and energy reserves. They release chemical signals, known as pheromones, to alert each other to threats. And their feces are rich in volatile compounds that help guide feeding bedbugs back to the safety of the refugia in the dark. Once a colony is established, it has tremendous staying power. Bedbugs can go weeks or months without a meal.

“We had 10 sopranos, 4 altos, 2 tenors, and 1 bass, and they were all volunteers. We were spending hours trying to learn this music that we didn't have the numbers for, so I ended up writing almost 100 church arrangements, and I made the voice leading very stepwise. Being that close to the music made me a better writer because I'm not just writing for ensembles I don't hear regularly. I'm there in the rehearsal process, and I know what's hard and what might be easier to grab onto.” MaryAnne Muglia (she/her) is a composer, vocalist, and educator based in Arizona. She arranges and writes contemporary choral music, vocal jazz, and indie-influenced original songs. Her music has been performed by ensembles across the country, including Lyyra, Chanticleer, The King's Return, Säje Voices, and more. Recent commissions include works for community choirs, professional vocal groups, and student ensembles of all levels.MaryAnne's arrangements and compositions have been published by Alfred Music, Graphite Publishing, Anchor Music, Hal Leonard, and Shawnee Press, and she has self-published over 25,000 copies of her work to date. She is the founder of Red Letter Daze, a professional vocal group with over 200,000 followers online and multiple Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award (CARA) recognitions. With Red Letter Daze, she has headlined major events including the NAU Jazz Madrigal Festival and the BOSS Festival (Boston Sings), sharing her original work and signature vocal arrangements with audiences nationwide. Her viral videos—including harmony breakdowns and arrangements of “The Parting Glass,” “The Sound of Silence,” “Carol of the Bells,” —have garnered millions of views across platforms. She also directs the Vocal Jazz and A Cappella programs at Chandler-Gilbert Community College and teaches at A Cappella Academy, a premier summer intensive for young vocalists founded by Avi Kaplan, Ben Bram, and Rob Dietz. To get in touch with MaryAnne, you can visit her website (maryannemuglia.com) or find her on Instagram (@maryanne.muglia).Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace Hudson

Future MLB first-rounder Ike Irish and veteran Cooper McMurray lead a balanced Auburn lineup with elite freshman talents Chase Fralic, Chris Rembert and Bub Terrell that really came on as the season progressed. Coastal Carolina comes in with a 51-11 record that included a sweep of its regional. The Chanticleers have one of the country's best pitching staffs (3.22 ERA) with Jacob Morrison, Cameron Flukey, Riley Eikoff, Luke Jones, Dominic Carbone, Matthew Potok, Hayden Johnson, Ryan Lunch, Darin Horn and company providing durability and depth. Potential first-round catcher Caden Bodine paces a Chanticleer lineup that gets on base throughout, with Blake Barthol (12 HR) and Sebastian Alexander (10) providing some power and Walker Mitchell (.449 OBP, 11 steals), Conway regional MVP Colby Thorndyke also big concerns for opponents. One Singular Sensation: "A Chorus Line" at Chanticleer Community Theatre at PACE!

We sat down with Director Todd Brooks,  Stage Manager Krista Freimuth, and Actor Adam Fulbright to talk about Chanticleer's upcoming production "A Chorus Line."  This is a cohesive cast who are working hard but having the time of their lives, which of course, is everything community theatre should be.  This is going to be a fun production, with a live orchestra, much dancing and singing with all the classic "A Chorus Line" tunes and dance moves! Though "A Chorus LIne" was also adapted into a popular movie in 1985, for most people the story is best told on stage. The original musical was written in 1975 by Marvin Hamlisch, with lyrics by Edward Kleban, and directed by Michael Bennett.  It won many Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and in 1984 won a Tony for longest running musical on Broadway.  (It is currently the 7th longest running musical to date).  The "Book" (librettists of the spoken, non-sung dialogue, and storyline of a musical play) was written by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante. The story is based on true stories and is set on the stage of a Broadway theater, and centered on seventeen Broadway dancers auditioning for roles on a chorus line. "A Chorus Line" runs May 9-12th and 16-19th at Chanticleer Community Theatre at PACE.  This is a great opportunity to see this prize winning musical!  CHANTICLEER at PACE / CONTACT INFO:  Website:  https://www.paceartsiowa.org/theater/chanticleer-community-theater Ticket Link: https://www.showpass.com/a-chorus-line-4/ Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/chanticleertheater  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paceartsia/?hl=en  Twitter: https://twitter.com/PACEartsiowa  Chanticleer Community Theatre / Pace Arts Iowa 1001 S 6th Street, Council Bluffs, IA HOW TO LISTEN TO THE PLATTE RIVER BARD PODCAST: Listen at https://platteriverbard.podbean.com or anywhere you get your podcasts.
