Join Trish, Rob and Jon for a conversation with... Toren Atkinson has been a professional artist since 1996. He's created book covers, comic books, film production art, illustration for board, card & roleplaying games, album covers, tattoos, and T-shirt designs. Toren is also one of the founding members and the lead singer for the Canadian rock-n-roll/power-pop band, The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. Toren and lead guitarist Warren Banks formed the band in 1992. The band's name is drawn from a phrase in H.P. Lovecraft's story The Tomb: "I will tell only of the lone tomb in the darkest of the hillside thickets.” Atkinson and Banks decided to create a band around the Cthulhu mythos because it was a topic they were interested in, and it was a unique "niche that needed to be filled.” He has a former podcast called "Caustic Soda" and a current podcast called "Toren's Guide to Everything." Toren co-wrote the Spaceship Zero RPG with his bandmate Warren Banks and is currently working on a new RPG environment called Ruin Nation. What better to make you feel woefully insignificant in the universe than an episode of this size? Last weekend Desmond Reddick attended the HP Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon, and this week he has more than three hours of footage to share with you. There's several reviews of the films seen at the fest and interview with the likes of: Frank Woodward (director of award-winning documentary Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown), Mars (composer of said documentary and the man behind Dead House Music), Jovanka Vuckovic (editor in chief of Rue Morgue Magazine), Toren Atkinson (from The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets), Sean Branney (from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society) and Andrew Migliore (festival runner and head of Lurker Films). There's also recorded footage of speeches, awards ceremonies and a panel on Lovecraft in Pop Culture. There's also tons of inane and profane chatter with fellow cultists and guest co-hosts DZ (from Cinema Diabolica) and Brother D (from Mail Order Zombie). On top of all that, there's music! "Weird Tales" by Dead House Music, "Main Theme from In Search of Lovecraft" by Troy Sterling Nies, "Lovecrafted" by Dead House Music, "Cultists on Board" and "Sleestack and Yeti" by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, "Neither Dead nor Dreaming" by Troy Sterling Nies from The Call of Cthulhu and "The Innsmouth Look" by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets.
