Based on the insane yet shockingly true story, Gaslit, starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, delivers a modern take on the Watergate scandal that shines its light most prominently on Arkansan socialite Martha Mitchell (Roberts). Showrunner Robbie Pickering discusses what audiences can expect to take away from the series: "We made it for people who aren't necessarily Watergate geeks. It's really about the human dynamics and the scandal and the ways people destroy their own lives... and [become] complicit in dirty deeds for somebody in power." Robbie goes on to discuss what he learned as a first-time showrunner: "It's a lot harder [than directing]... but through trial and error, I had learned how to be a better leader, how to come into a room knowing that if you're the showrunner, you set the tone... when I went to become a showrunner, it was an easier transition than I thought, and being a staff writer had allowed me to let go of my ego in a way that directing really hadn't." Gaslit is now available to stream on Starz. Don't forget to subscribe to the Write On Podcast on iTunes! Now available on Google Podcasts!

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Jim Meskimen, an actor, impressionist, comedian and oh so much more, who happens to the son of Mrs. C. That's right, he's the son of Happy Days' Marion Cunningham aka Marion Ross. Hailing from Albert Lee, Minneapolis, Marion Ross was drawn to acting at an early age. She even changed her name before high school because she thought it would read better on a theater marquee. In fact, her first love was indeed theater – which she did before, during and after her most famous role as America's mom. But it was television that made her a household name. In a career that spans more than 60 years, Marion Ross is still occasionally does voice overs at ninety -f'ing three years old. Her words, not ours. It was great to learn from Jim about how a head of household, who happened to be a divorced mother of two was able to make it after quite a few years of struggle in show business. It was purely by chance that she took a bit part in Airport, the 1970 disaster movie, that led to a chance meeting with the head of casting for Happy Days. And although Tom Bosley wasn't particularly nice as Mr. Cunningham (which you can read all about in her autobiography My Days: Happy and Otherwise), a decade-long run on a hit television series was an ideal way to make a living doing what she loved. It's a pleasure to talk to Jim about his mother as well as discussing his own career that launched a successful YouTube channel, iconic commercials playing Colonel Sanders for KFC and Geiko as well as starring in an upcoming Starz production called Gaslight with Julia Roberts and Sean Penn. We talk about his stints on America's Got Talent as well as stories about Rich Little, Phylis Diller and Clark Gable. It's all next on the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Editors - Joel Griffen and Gardner Gould SHINING VALE editors Joel Griffen and Gardner Gould teamed up with editor Antonia de Barros to craft a truly unique tv series that deftly blends comedy, fantasy and horror. Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, SHINING VALE stars Courteney Cox, Greg Kinnear, Sherilyn Fenn, Mira Sorvino, Merrin Dungey and Judith Light. It premiered on Starz on March 6th, 2022. The plot of SHINING VALE is described thusly...a dysfunctional family moves from the city to a small town after Patricia "Pat" Phelps, a former "wild child" who became famous through writing raunchy female empowerment novels, is caught cheating on her husband. The house the family has moved into is a place where in the past, terrible atrocities have taken place. Nobody seems to suspect anything odd except for Pat who's convinced she's either depressed or possessed. Pat has been sober for 16 years, but begins to feel very unfulfilled in life – she still hasn't written her second novel, she can't remember the last time she had sex with her husband and her teenage kids have grown up to the point where they don't want their mother in their lives. Soon, the demons haunting the family's new home begin to appear much more real. JOEL GRIFFEN Editor Joel Griffen is known for his work as an editor on such shows as Leverage: Redemption (2021), Almost Paradise (2020), Krypton (2018-2019); and as an assistant editor on The Walking Dead (2014-2015), Super 8 (2011), Rango (2011), Top Chef (2007-2008) and American Idol (2007). GARDNER GOULD Gardner Gould came up in NY and LA cutting rooms under editors Tim Squyres (LIFE OF PI), and Michael Berenbaum (BEFORE NIGHT FALLS). Gould earned his first feature editing credit on DON'T BREATHE (dir. Fede Alvarez; prod. Sam Raimi), grossing over $157M. He followed this taut editorial debut with the lush and exploratory PERFECT (dir. Eddie Alvarez; e.p. Steven Soderbergh), which premiered at SXSW. The same year, drama/sci-fi/thriller HOTEL ARTEMIS (dir. Drew Pearce, prod. Marc Platt) allowed Gould to work a contained ensemble cast into a chest-sweating boil. Sony's GRUDGE reboot (dir. Nicolas Pesce; prod Sam Raimi) followed as an opportunity to re-team with Ghost House producing team to unnerve and terrify horror fans worldwide. He's now lead editor on Starz's new series SHINING VALE (creators Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan). Always on the lookout for fresh projects, he also edits for the Sundance Directors Lab. For the second episode in a row, Gingerdead Man (starring Gary Busey) finds its way into our conversation. “Roadie Friday” is the day before the day off on tour. Friday is a state of mind. TGI Fridays was a really revolutionary idea when it first came about. The premise was that it was a bar that women would feel comfortable visiting. The bar in the movie Cocktail where Tom Cruise recites poetry is based on TGI Fridays. Freaky Fridays are when you switch bodies with your parent. Freya is the mother of Thor and Friday is named for her the way Thursday is named for him. Here's DJ Pooh running and crying. Def Comedy Jam was a show on HBO where urban comedians could perform. The most famous set ever was probably Bernie Mac's first appearance but Chris Tucker's was really good too. Phil was wrong here, there is no "other Chris Tucker". Deebo Samuel plays football for the San Francisco 49ers. Deebo is not his legal name but he confirms that it came from the movie Friday. We note how great Friday's soundtrack is, with songs like “Keep Their Heads Ringin” by Dr. Dre, “Friday” by Ice Cube & “Hoochie Mama” by 2 Live Crew. Jake compares Friday to two of his favorite books Cannery Row & Tortilla Flat (both by John Steinbeck). He also compares it to his new favorite TV show to insist everyone watch: Blindspotting (it's on Starz so you'll have to get a promotional subscription and binge the show within a month). Other songs discussed include “Little Saint Nick” by The Beach Boys, “American Pie” by Don McLean & “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick. Jason sincerely apologizes for unknowingly dead-naming Cara Cunningham. Here's the 2021 hyperpop remix of “Friday” featuring Big Freedia and others. If you want to get technical about it, Looking Glass was NOT a one-hit wonder. "Brandy" was, to be sure, their biggest hit and the song that most people identify with the band. But "Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne," the opening track from their second album, spent only one week less on the Billboard Hot 100 chart than "Brandy" did. Okay, it peaked at #33 while "Brandy" spent most of its chart life at or near the top, but still. "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" was actually a departure from their usual sound, which was a little more Jersey Shore Rock and Roll. This wound up creating a little trouble for audiences who came to see them expecting to hear an entire evening of "Brandy"-grade music, and it probably contributed to the demise of the band. Founding member Elliot Lurie left the band in 1974 for a solo career, and by the end of the next year the band changed names twice and moved into a power pop/metal sound. That band, called Starz, did have a couple of hits and they do still play from time to time. Lurie, meanwhile, moved into the production and music supervision side of things for awhile, and occasionally returns to live performances. Click here for a transcript of this episode. Award-winning playwright and co-writer of Pixar's TURNING RED, Julia Cho was born and raised in the arid suburbs of Southern California and Arizona. After a fairly uneventful childhood, she unexpectedly discovered theater as a teen and subsequently foiled her parents' expectations of a life of respectability and normalcy.Disney and Pixar's “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren't enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins.Instead, armed with an MFA in writing from NYU and a prestigious fellowship at The Juilliard School, Julia launched herself into the New York theater scene. She soon landed residencies at the Sundance Lab and New Dramatists and productions at high-profile theaters in NYC and across the country. Memorable productions include “The Language Archive” (winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Award), “Aubergine” and “Office Hour.” For her body of work, she received the 2020 Windham-Campbell Literary Prize for Drama which wrote: “Alternately lyrical and sharp, rigorous and whimsical, Cho's plays demand that we listen.”Alongside her theatrics, Cho has also cultivated a career as a writer and producer of a broad range of television shows from cult sci-fi (“Fringe”) to character-driven drama (“Big Love,” “Halt and Catch Fire”). She also adapted the critically-acclaimed novel The Madonnas of Echo Park for HBO and Starz, which showcased her ability to transform eloquent fiction into dynamic and propulsive narrative.Driven by keen curiosity and a passion for language, Julia strives to create work that expands our worlds and sparks our deepest empathies. She's currently under commission for South Coast Repertory to write a new play and is a Co-Executive Producer for the Amazon series, “Paper Girls.” In other words, she's following a movie about four thirteen-year-old girls with a series about four twelve-year-old girls. A project about four eleven-year-old girls is forthcoming.
In which John Heilemann talks with actor Adam Scott, best known for his roles in beloved sitcoms including Parks and Recreation and The Good Place. Heilemann and Scott discuss his latest role in Severance, the new Apple TV+ sci-fi series directed by Ben Stiller; why the comedy veteran was eager to take part in the psychological drama; and how the backdrop of Covid-19 and the Trump presidency contributed to the dystopian nature of the show. They also reflect on Scott's career – from his decade-plus as a struggling actor, his breakout role in Step Brothers, and his penchant for playing wanton assholes to hilarious effect – and look ahead to Scott's highly anticipated return as Henry Pollard in the forthcoming reboot of the cult comedy classic STARZ series Party Down.
