Few actors kick off their careers with productions as big as the opportunities Hermione Corfield secured early on. One of her first feature film credits is Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation in which she shares a key scene with Tom Cruise, and soon after came xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. After that, it was the indie crime thriller Rust Creek which earned Corfield a couple of film festivals honors, and then it was the movie that quite firmly solidified her as a must-follow actor for yours truly, the eco-horror movie Sea Fever in which she stars opposite Connie Nielsen and Dougray Scott. Ever since our TIFF 2019 chat for that film, Corfield's been a prime target for Collider Ladies Night and now, with the debut of the Outlander prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, the time has finally come. The new Starz show puts the spotlight on Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Beauchamp's (Caitríona Balfe) parents. For Jamie, it's Jamie Roy's Brian Fraser and Harriet Slater's Ellen MacKenzie, and Claire's parents, Henry Beauchamp and Julia Moriston, are played by Jeremy Irvine and Corfield. Whereas Brian and Ellen's romance starts and remains in the same time period, Henry and Julia experience a significant upheaval when, similar to their daughter, they travel from 1917 to 1714, crossing paths with Brian and Ellen.Soon after a brief chat with Corfield and much of the main ensemble at San Diego Comic-Con, Corfield swung by the Collider Ladies Night studio for an extended conversation about the first two episodes of Season 1, and to offer up a few teases of what's to come. This week's show kicks off with Rome welcoming listeners, sharing music picks, and paying tribute to Malcolm Jamal Warner, reflecting on his impact alongside nods to Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan. From there, Jab leads a deep dive into hip-hop's evolving style, from Run-D.M.C.'s Adidas tracksuits to today's Balenciaga fits, exploring how regional trends and social media have shaped the culture. Next, the hosts debate talent vs. rapper—is lyrical skill still essential in 2025, or has branding and presence taken over? Jab then unpacks the rise of “begging music” in rap, spotlighting emotional tracks from Drake, Future, and Rod Wave, before Shan takes listeners on a nostalgic ride through TV one-hit wonders—shows like The Get Down, Lovecraft Country, and South Central that deserved more than one season. Rome brings the conversation back to the present with a breakdown of Howard University's financial aid controversy, where students face sudden debts despite holding scholarships. Shan follows up with fresh TV news: STARZ greenlighting Power: Origins, an 18-episode prequel exploring the early days of Ghost and Tommy, sparking fan casting buzz. Finally, Mill rounds things out with a timely discussion on Trump's executive order and the NIL shake-up in college sports, weighing whether student-athletes should be considered employees and what it means for HBCUs and hip-hop crossovers. The episode closes with final thoughts, a preview of what's next, and listener shout-outs—plus calls for fans to join the conversation by dropping their takes on fashion eras, emotional rap anthems, one-season shows, and dream castings.
Hi! While Allison takes a well-deserved summer break, Amelia and Julie got together to watch and react to the Starz-official trailer for the Outlander prequel series, Blood of My Blood. As always, we couldn't figure out tech shit, so just trust us on the time stamps. We also conflated Mrs. Graham and Mrs. Fitzgibbons, we're very sorry book readers! Let's all hope that this show is great. We are very excited for Baby Pamplemousse! Lots of love - Amelia and Julie Photo Courtesy of Starz
Happy Monday, Listeners! Selina Ringel and Dan Levy Dagerman brought their feature film “You, Me & Her” to Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2023, taking home three awards! Those would be the Grand Jury Awards for Best Feature Film - Comedy, Best Performance by a Cast - Feature Film - Comedy, and Best Screenplay - Feature Film - Comedy for Selina. Excitingly, “You, Me & Her” had an innovative theatrical release! It was released in 200 theaters nationwide on Valentine's Day 2025. I should not have to tell anyone what an accomplishment it is for an indie feature to get that kind of theatrical release. This indie romantic comedy was the first film to use Attend, a direct distribution platform recently launched by The Fithian Group. Additionally, after its VOD run the film will be released on the streaming service STARZ! I had been talking to Selina and Dan about their being on the podcast for a long time. As you can imagine, a team with the drive to get an indie feature into theaters does not have a lot of spare time. Selina and I chatted about getting them over to record, as we live in the same Los Angeles neighborhood. Unfortunately our time was cut short and we did not get to go into their release with Attend as thoroughly as we would have liked. If things slow down for them maybe they will come back! In the meantime, check out their website https://www.ymhmovie.com/ and enjoy this podcast. @selinaringel @dldagerman _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Podcast Links DIF Podcast Website - DIF Instagram - DIF BlueSky Discover Indie Film Foundation (nonprofit for the arts) Links DIF Foundation - Sherman Oaks Film Festival - Film Invasion Los Angeles

Dr. Michelle Starz-Gaiano is Professor and Chair of Biological Sciences at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Michelle's research uses fruit flies to examine how cells in the body go to the right place at the right time. Understanding why and how cells use their genetic information to move through the body is critical because if this movement doesn't happen correctly, it could, for example, impact embryo development or affect how immune cells mobilize after an injury. Conversely, preventing cancer cells from moving could keep cancer from spreading to other parts of the body. Michelle often spends her free time cooking and baking. Her kitchen looks a little like a lab, and she enjoys experimenting with making different foods. Michelle and her family also like to spend time together, travel, and listen to music. She received her bachelor's degree in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her PhD in Developmental Genetics from New York University. Afterwards, Michelle completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She joined UMBC in 2008 and has received the Donald Creighton Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the UMBC Graduate Student Association for her excellent mentorship. In our interview, she shares more about her life and science.
