In today's episode, we discuss what Casey calls the “zero interest rate phenomenon” product manager and how to avoid becoming one. He provides valuable insights on thinking outside popular frameworks, shipping products efficiently, and avoiding overreliance on user research. $350 million? For this? That's right, this week we're talking the disastrous (both financially an critically) 2012 Disney film, John Carter. Not of Mars, or anything else. His name is his name. We're grateful to be joined by the super talented Mellow Brown (Blade Runner: Origins) to get into what exactly went wrong. Was it the red face? The thinly veiled Civil War allegory? The totally confusing plot devices? We also chat about the importance of Black voices in science fiction. Mellow is crushing it right now. Blade Runner Origins from Titan Comics is available wherever you get your books. You can also catch his work on Station 19 on ABC, Calls on Apple+ and American Gods on Starz. Follow Mellow on Twitter @Mellowmarketer and his website at https://mellowmarketing1.wixsite.com/mbrown As always, you can find us at @white_pod on Twitter and at whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com We'll be back next week with the OG of all this, To Kill a Mockingbird.
This week, Mel Brooks and a star-studded writers' room give us a sequel 40+ years in the making, History of the World Part II, on Hulu. A writer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, today's guest Duncan Birmingham was an executive producer and screenwriter for IFC's MARON and also served as a co-executive producer and writer on the Starz series BLUNT TALK as well. Additionally, Duncan's short films have premiered at such festivals as Sundance and AFI, and his screenplay SWINGLES, which was bought by Paramount, was also on The Black List. Recently, his lively, irreverent short-story collection THE CULT IN MY GARAGE was published by Maudlin House in 2021, & last year, he wrapped & released his excellent first feature-length film as a writer-director called WHO INVITED THEM. Having joined me in 2022 for one of my favorite conversations devoted to director Hal Ashby in the fifth episode of the third season, he's back for the fifth episode of the fourth to discuss writer-director Noah Baumbach's career over the decades & the films KICKING AND SCREAMING, THE SQUID & THE WHALE, GREENBERG, FRANCES HA, & MARRIAGE STORY. Note: If you hear me blank on things a bit more than usual in this episode, it's because I was battling an unrelenting sinus infection but was determined to power through & have an analytical conversation about outstanding talky indies with Duncan, who was coming off of the tail end of a bad cold himself! 'Tis the season! Nonetheless, it's a very rich discussion for fans of the filmmaker's work wherein we assessed recurring themes, compared the ways in which newer films & characters commented on past ones, & celebrated Baumbach's rich collaborators as well. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of February 24, 2023. Ever wondered what a bear is like after it does cocaine? The new movie “Cocaine Bear” will show how director Elizabeth Banks imagines it, all on the big screen. For small-screen options, you have; A silent David Harbour haunts Anthony Mackie's family, who turns him into a social media sensation before things take a very dark turn in “We Have a Ghost” on Netflix. Christoph Waltz is either the best boss ever or the most sadistic one in “The Consultant” on Amazon Prime Video. Eva Green is a British intelligence agent who knows her French rival all too well in the espionage thriller series “Liaison” on Apple TV Plus. The crew from “Outer Banks” is back for a third season of teenagers doing way-too-grown-up things on Netflix. The comedy “Party Down” reunites after 10 years for another series on Starz. And Eugene Levy becomes “The Reluctant Traveler,” visiting locales around the world (including Utah!) in the new Apple TV Plus series. Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy. Brilliant opinions and commentary on all things geek, but surprising knowledge and witty arguments over pop culture, Star Trek, MARVEL vs DC, and a wide range of movies, TV shows, and more. Formerly known as SLC Fanboys, the show is hosted by Andy Farnsworth and KellieAnn Halvorsen, who are joined by guest experts. They also unpack the misconception around “quitting” and the ability to hold multiple feelings simultaneously. About Renika: Renika Williams plays Willow on HBO Max's new hit comedy THE SEX LIVES OF COLLEGE GIRLS. She can also be seen on NBC's NEW AMSTERDAM, Amazon Prime's MODERN LOVE and STARZ' P Valley. Regional theatre productions at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, Indiana Repertory Theatre, The Arden Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, & Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.
