In the 1990s, Portland's Dada Ball was the stuff of legends. An unorthodox gala thrown each year by the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA), the ball was as debaucherous as it was provocative. It happened everywhere from abandoned warehouses to Oaks Park, and brought together an amazing cross section of artists, eccentrics, and counter-culture creatives. This year, to mark its 20th anniversary, PICA is bringing the Dada Ball back on March 16 at the Southeast warehouse space The Redd. They're combining it with their annual gala, TaDa, and calling it TaDaDa – and the now veteran arts organization is hoping it'll be like no fundraiser you've ever attended. In place of an auction, ticket holders can whack their way through an enchanted forest of piñatas stuffed with original art works and gorge themselves at a bacchanalian feast prepared by six different chefs. The evening will also feature the Bizarre Bazaar, an adults-only twist on classic carnival games (think vape toss). At 9pm the doors open to the public for a raucous after party, with music by White Hinterland, DJ Beyonda, and more.To commemorate the event, State of Wonder producer Aaron Scott put together this oral history.Read our full story:

Our featured MusicMaker this week is the talented Casey Dienel, of White Hinterland. At the end of the show, stick around to hear about Casey’s journey touring around the world as a singer/songwriter. SHE DOES podcast, hosted by Elaine Sheldon and Sarah Ginsburg, showcases conversations with women making their mark in media. Going beyond their current career status, we explore each woman's past to understand how their personality, background and philosophy informs their work.
Casey Dienel is a producer, singer, and songwriter who goes by the name White Hinterland. In this episode, she'll break down her song Ring the Bell. To make it, she had to break out of her comfort zone of working alone and reach to other people. She got a little unexpected help from Beyonce.
Casey Dienel, aka White Hinterland, has been making gorgeous, slightly off-kilter indie pop since 2006, but it was on 2010’s Kairos that the masses began to really take notice of her eclectic talent. Hitting the road armed with a new record, Baby, her tour stopped through Washington, DC a few weeks ago, and Andre sat down with her before the show to talk about her musical upbringing, the new album, and more. Settle in for a great conversation with one of 2014’s most innovative artists, White Hinterland on Episode 57 of ChunkyGlasses: THE PODCAST! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
