Episode 257: A Simple Script for Missionary Moms is for every missionary mom, dad, mission leader, or loved one who has ever wondered, "What do I say when my missionary is struggling?" In this episode, I share one simple but powerful script that can completely change the way you support missionaries, returned missionaries, and young adults through hard days, discouragement, anxiety, homesickness, self doubt, or even thoughts of coming home from the mission. We talk about why our brains naturally want to fix problems, why missionaries often think there is something wrong with them for struggling, and how your response can either add pressure or create safety and connection. I walk through the simple practice of normalize, validate, repeat and explain how learning to "hold space" instead of trying to fix things can strengthen trust, confidence, emotional resilience, and relationships with your missionary or returned missionary. Whether your missionary is struggling with mission anxiety, discouragement, confidence, self worth, social anxiety after the mission, or simply feeling overwhelmed, this episode will give you practical tools and a simple script to help you respond in a way that feels calm, loving, and supportive. You do not have to fix your missionary, solve every problem, or say the perfect thing. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply remind them that it makes sense, it is okay, and you are there to help them move through it. Episode 257: A Simple Script for Missionary Moms will show you exactly how. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends. 00:00 – Intro 02:00 – Why Missionary Moms Feel So Much Pressure 05:15 – Why We Try to Fix Our Missionaries 08:20 – Thoughts and Feelings Are Not the Problem 11:10 – The Script: Normalize + Validate 14:30 – Mission Anxiety, Going Home, and Hard Days 18:10 – Helping Returned Missionaries Struggle Well 21:00 – "How Can We Help You Move Through This?" 24:15 – Holding Space Instead of Fixing 28:10 – Final Thoughts for Missionary Moms Website | Instagram | Facebook 5 Ways to Process Any Less-Than Happy Mission Memories Article: HERE Get the Full Show Notes and Text/PDF Transcripts: HERE Free PDF Download: Podcast Roadmap Free PDF Download: Preparing Missionary Cheat Sheet Free Training for Preparing Missionaries: Change Your Mission with this One Tool RM Transition Free Video Series: 3 Tools to Help RMs in Their Transition Home Free Guide: 5 Tips to Help Any Returning Missionary Schedule a Free Strategy Call: Click Here

Who says you can't go home again? You can. Sometimes it's a choice, and sometimes it's not. Lisa went home to her family straight out of detox and immediately faced the reality that she might have left the world of drinking, but it hadn't left her. Anna learned what can happen when a family member asks if you mind if they drink, you say you do and they get mad. The ladies also veer into discussing going home to an apartment that had previously been a den of inequity and starting fresh (and clean). Check out all things Recovery Rocks, Lisa and Anna.

Send us Fan MailA Dorset walk to a walled garden. Light dancing on water. A motto whispered at crossroads: onwards and upwards. Linda Jacob invites us into a life built on fairness, quiet courage, and the everyday craft of choosing our response when events feel out of hand. We talk about here roots in Buckinghamshire, a grandmother named Florence who taught kindness without gossip, and the determined climb from leaving school early to earning skills through night classes and long bus rides. One formative moment—watching a senior leader belittle a colleague—sparked a promise to lead with dignity, a pledge she kept across decades in social work, supported housing, pubs, and company directorships. The centre of gravity is service. Linda shares intimate, hard-won stories from homelessness support, including a young father who, after months of learning and resolve, won custody and a new home for his child. These are victories measured in confidence regained, routines restored, and doors opened. Her inspiration comes from ordinary people facing extraordinary pressure and from the disciplined habit of finding a usable positive in the negative. We explore how she practises emotional agency—separating content from reaction—and why “Just for today” remains a practical anchor for focus and wellbeing. There's tenderness, too: Halcyon days in the long spring of 1975 when her first child Brennan was born; music that holds memory—Simon and Garfunkel's Bookends, the ache of Going Home; and a signature coffee cake taught by Nanny Taylor that became a small community legend. We linger at twilight, that moment when day blends into night, and consider legacy without fanfare: protect dignity, pass on what works, laugh when you can, make one good thing well and share it. Linda also speaks candidly about facing serious illness and her plan to turn hardship into guidance for fellow social workers, transforming pain into a map others can use.Come for the stories; stay for the tools. If you value humane leadership, homelessness advocacy, emotional resilience, and the restorative pull of nature, you'll find a generous guide here. Going Home – Genesis 45:3–5 In this final week of our study of Joseph, we see the powerful moment when Joseph reveals himself to his brothers. Instead of revenge, he chooses forgiveness, recognizing that God used his pain for a greater purpose. Going Home reminds us that God can redeem our past, restore broken relationships, and turn what was meant for harm into part of His plan.

Today's poem is Going Home by Joan Kwon Glass. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Maggie writes… “When my children tell me about their dreams, it's not uncommon for them to say, “We were at home, but it wasn't our house,” or “I was with my friends, but they weren't my real-life friends.” Sometimes I play a cameo role as myself, but sometimes the role of their mother is played by someone else. Dreams are strange like that. Our sleeping brains sometimes offer us alternate versions of familiar people and places.”Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today.
