Welcome to the Pearls of Wisdom! In this episode, we welcome special guest John Carter of Jack Lewis Jewelers, a historic store in Bloomington, Illinois, founded in 1927. John shares the store's journey, from its beginnings serving railroad employees during the Great Depression to its evolution into a more inclusive and accessible jewelry destination. Fast forward to the 70s, when John Wolverine took over the store. John Carter, who started working there in high school, eventually bought the store in 2011 and became the third-generation owner, continuing the legacy. The story turns towards modernity as John emphasizes reshaping the store's image. He emphasizes the importance of inheriting both the good and the bad when taking over a long-standing business and his commitment to changing the store's perception. Working closely with marketing expert Josh, they shattered the notion of exclusivity and opened their doors to all budgets and tastes. One standout campaign they launched was “Size Doesn't Matter. She Does,” conveying their commitment to serving everyone. The store's excellent service and client-focused approach gained numerous five-star reviews. John also discusses “Blingfest,” a fun and engaging event that helped them connect with a broader audience through social media. He advises jewelry store owners to find a marketing partner who understands their vision and gives campaigns time to mature. John highlights the power of video content, even for those new to it. Authenticity matters more than perfection; starting small with informative videos can make a big impact. Tune in for more exciting facts about Jack Lewis Jewelers and discover how it evolved its legacy while staying true to its community and values. Claire tries to avoid cliché phrases like “endless possibilities” and “stay present!” but these sayings are overused for a reason! In today's episode, she invites you to go back to the basics of shifting into expansive beliefs when it comes to finding your person, vs reacting off of what is or isn't happening in your love-life, and therefore making it mean that it will never work out.Claire uses two of her clients as examples who have a more unique circumstance than most of her clients… One client lost the love of her life because he passed away, making it extra difficult to imagine her new person, without comparing to her soulmate. The other client is in her late 60's and wrestles with what she believes are extra limited options due to her age, as well as feeling a next level of pressure and being rushed because she has less time left, compared to her peers in Claire's group program.Claire picked these two clients and their unique circumstances for this episode, because of how easy it would be to naturally fall into the trap of believing that it's much harder for them, compared to most of her clients who come to her heartbroken over an ex who left the building and/or are single and searching in their late 20s- early 50s.But don't get her wrong! She DOES understand where these two women are coming from… However, if THEY can shift into a mindset of endless possibilities, Claire hopes this will inspire YOU to do the same with whatever you believe are limitations holding YOU back from finding your person.
Katrina doesn't mind that her GF Mariah has a "friend" who goes to all her nerdy superhero movies with her. She DOES mind that the hangouts are starting to get a little too "frequent". Are her suspicions about this girl just paranoia? Or is her "woman's instinct" telling her something that's true?
Laura, having never seen any of the Star Wars movies, doesn't quite understand the connection to 5/4. She DOES understand that some artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are NOT rock and roll artists. Tim & Todd recognize a generation gap on early computers and printers. And it's "In the Kitchen" day with a new recipe from Laura and a new surprise from Tim! Click to listen or tell Alexa or Siri "Play the Q102 Morning Show Podcast!"

WOMAN SHARE THEIR OPINION ON MEN - THE HARDER SHAFT PODCAST with Joe-y Busuttil In today's episode we chat to women and ask them what they think of men, Why is gender equality important? What do Women Actually Want from a partner? How do men Muck Up First Impressions? How do you feel Being Called A ‘Good Girl', 'Darling', 'Sweetie', 'Babe', etc.? Why? What are the Double Standards woman face in their sex lives? What do you think are some of men's biggest insecurities? Why do you think men care so much about physical imperfections in a woman (wrinkles, cellulite, love handles, and all that)?Do you have any bad situations you have experienced with a man ? Advice to men ?"At a bookstore one day, I couldn't buy an erotic novel because there was a man at the counter.'I SEE MAN AS A STAR, a direction, an orientation, the point of origin, and the place where all time ends.I look upon Man as a butterfly surveying a flowerbed, tasting, testing, or as a hawk crouched in the high weeds on a roadbank glaring at automobiles speeding by. I see Man as a hummingbird, a moment's radiance which hovers unscheduled, vanishing in half a heartbeat.I reach for Man's hand the same way I struggled for my father's hand, when we used to survey laid-by fields, grown over with the brambles of blackberry groves, harboring dens of copperheads.I look up to Man, as I did to my father, the first Man I dared to trust and to love. Men are not like him.I care for Man, as I now care for my mother, wintering, crippled by time, tested by storm.I see Man as all the light I lack. Life is not as bright nor fruitful without him. I see Man, seeing, strip away all his trappings of stage dressings, dismiss his barnstormings and his posturings, referee his war games.I see Man as the child I suckle, a kitten with eyes half-opened, a fever that seizes me when midnight comes.I see in him the best and the worst qualities of myself. In the wake of many loves, many men and two children, I see Man as an omen of tomorrow's coming terror, a lethal disease, a disguised born enemy, a danger to ward off like a rattlesnake or a pack of mad dogs.Like Lord Byron, the second man I dared to love, I can neither live with you nor without you.And so I keep on, loving you, Man, even when faith and trust are rust. I go on living, looking, learning you, learning your loves, your fears, your despairs, your wild-bird heart.I see Man as a poem to be sung, an afghan to be crocheted, an awry picture to be straightened, a field to be sown. I see Man as a secret art to be mastered, made, because I see in him all the tapestries we can weave together.I see Man as my brother, lover, friend, parent, priest, son, sire because my Mother, the Great Mother, made him so. I do not always agree with Her, but She DOES know best.Lastly, I see Man as the persimmon tree in the northern field sees all the young birds in spring, all the flocks of wild geese migrating south overhead, leaving me, periodically, seasonally, forever abandoning me to winter winds and snowdrifts over the running cedars, always coming back. So, apropos of Count Dracula, I see Man, and say, as the good Count said in greeting Jonathan Harker, “Welcome the traveller, speed the parting guest.”Some day, with some Man, I am going to share Emerson: “Nothing that is good and fair grows alone.”I see Man as a co-prisoner in an alien wasteland, because we are both more than we know and less than we could ever imagine. I see Man and would tell him what I have written, seen, been, dreamed, lived, died, reworked, prayed; but we do not speak the same language, no longer share the heart's tongue. So I see Man. And I go talk to the Moon.Mariposa (Virginia Love Long)-------------------------------------------------------------------------JOE BUSUTTILMENS COACH/ COUNSELLORthesecretmensbusiness@gmail.comwww.equator-hypnotherapymelbourne.comINSTAGRAM:@the_shaft_experienceFACEBOOK:THE SHAFT EXPERIENCE-SEXUAL HEALTHwww.facebook.com/groups/secretmensbusiness01/the HARDER SHAFT podcast:https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/thesecretmensbusinessAvailable on all PODCAST PLATFORMS-iTunesSpotifyDeezerGoogle ManagerAmazom MusicPodomaticYOUTUBE:THE SHAFT EXPERIENCE - MENS SEXUAL HEALTH https://www.youtube.com/c/TheSHAFTExperienceMENSSexualHealthsuppor
Here we go, everyone, with our We Review the Reviews episode for "Desperation in Death"! Since this is such a new book, there's not the amount of reviews to choose from that we have with other titles. Still, we find some doozies. Our first reviewer found this book to be the "most unpleasant of all the books." Several reviewers find the book formulaic, yet somehow not? And Eve hasn't grown at all since her past "shows up in every. single. book." and she needs to "get a shrink." Someone who wants to know why people have to ask permission from Eve to go into her office and make themselves a cup of her coffee "Robb's writing is spot on" but somehow the book was "bland and a little disappointing." And..."ferengi? really?" One reviewer from Australia charges that Eve: "handed the defence a gift in this?? Assault during an arrest and violation of rights??" AJ takes that comment and goes off on a rant about actual US laws regarding use of force for police, and we go point by point describing the takedown of Iris Beaty, showing how at no point did Eve violate Beaty's rights according to US law. As we always do, we found a few reviews that praise Susan Ericksen, and one who says: "I hope Nora Robert's is aware of how fortunate she is to have such a fantastic narrator doing her work such justice." (She Does). We read a great review that states "the series is still so fresh, the characters engaging and entertaining, storyline gritty and suspenseful." And end with one who says the book was "Another Grand Slam AGAIN!!!" We had fun with these reviews, and we hope you have fun listening to them!

Kathleen opens the show drinking a Singing Frog Golden Lager from The Wynn in Las Vegas, sipping the beer from her Seamus McDaniel's pub pint glass. Kathleen then shares with the Termites all off her favorite highlights from her show at The Ryman in downtown Nashville, thrilled that she got to finally meet her Twitter friend Stella Parton, whom she can't wait to drink red wine with. Kathleen then gives an update on her birthday plans taking place on September 30th: she's going to the Ozarks to golf with her parents and see some friends, and then is excited to be heading to Johnny Morris's Big Cedar Lodge to golf with her siblings and cousins and drink in a cave bar. TERMITE SHOUTOUTS: Kathleen gives thanks to the Termites who leave notes at shows and send mail to her PO Box. She begins by thanking Termites from the Savannah Bananas for her new baseball-style t-shirt, and from Termite Baba Valentino for the cool golf balls. She then thanks Termite Donna from Abilene, TX for her homemade Pubcast sign and funky gravy boat. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Drew's Creamy Ranch dressing from Vermont, which she loves. She moves on to taste Cap'N Crunch Chocolate Caramel Crunch, which she thinks is too sweet, and prefers Crunch Berries. Kathleen rounds out her tasting menu sampling the limited edition Cool Ranch Doritos, which she likes but still prefers the original or taco flavored Doritos. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN'S QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen has limited updates on the Queens this week, but hopes that recent music releases and tour activity will provide more activity for next week's report. MOBSTER TIED TO ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM DIES: Kathleen provides an update that alleged mobster Robert Gentile, thought to have been the last person alive with knowledge of who committed the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum art heist, has died at the age of 85 of a stroke. THERANOS TRIAL UPDATE: Kathleen continues her obsession with seeing the downfall of Elizabeth Holmes, providing an update on Theranos trial currently taking place in California. She reads an article specifically reviewing Holmes' crazy emails sent in the middle of the night to employees while she was at the company's helm, as well as her defense strategy of trying to block testimony on her extravagant personal expenses while SAM ADAMS' ILLEGAL BEER: Kathleen is thrilled to read an article announcing that brewer Sam Adams is releasing the latest beer in their Utopias collection, which is available in limited capacity every 2 years. This release is so strong, it's illegal in 15 states because this year, the brews carry a staggering 28 percent alcohol by volume or ABV. By comparison, the classic Samuel Adams Boston Lager is just 5 percent ABV.CHINA BANS KIDS FROM MIDWEEK GAMING: Kathleen reads an article from China where new rules recently published by China's National Press and Publication Administration are allowing kids and teens under 18 years old be limited to three hours per week to play online video games. Kathleen laughs at the outcry that would happen in the US if such a move was made. THE WORLD'S LARGEST CRUISE SHIP DEBUTS: Never being a lover of cruise ship travel, Kathleen reads an announcement from Royal Caribbean advising that their newest ship, the Wonder of the Seas, has been authenticated as the largest cruise ship in the world. Originally meant to set sail from China, the ship will now begin sailing from Florida to the Caribbean in March 2022. The Wonder of the Seas will feature 8 “neighborhoods” and revised amenities such as a full waterslide. All of Kathleen's thoughts on cruise ship travel can be heard on her bits “Cruise Ship Day 1” and “Cruise Ship Day 2.”THE OLDEST LOBSTER TRAPPER IN MAINE: Kathleen is thrilled to read an article from Maine profiling Virginia Oliver, who has been fishing for lobsters for over a century. Despite having surpassed the typical retirement age decades ago, the Rockland, Maine-based fisherwoman works with her son, Max, catching lobsters three days a week from May through November. Kathleen applauds Virginia's efforts and work ethic, stating that the only other person that she could envision working into a second century would be her father, Jack. THE ‘SUEZ CANAL ON RAILS' UNVEILED: As listeners know, Kathleen loves a train ride and has a mad appreciation for any improvement to infrastructure. She's envious to read of plans in Cairo, Egypt where the Egyptian government has signed a $4.45 billion deal for a high-speed electric rail line to link its Red Sea and Mediterranean coasts. The 410-mile rail link will include a mainline designed to carry more than 30 million passengers annually as well as a freight line and will run between the Red Sea port of Ain Sokhna and 2 Mediterranean ports. Kathleen laughs that she's waited her entire life for a train to connect St. Louis and the Lake of the Ozarks, and wouldn't care how fast it traveled as long as there was a bar car made available. RUSSIAN CHESS STAR SUES NETFLIX: Like many Termites, Kathleen loved the premises of the Netflix series “The Queen's Gambit.” She reads an update where a former Soviet chess champion, Nona Gaprindashvili, is suing Netflix for defamation over the incorrect chronological sequence of the final episode where Gaprindashvili is referenced by name as not having ever faced male opponents, when in fact she HAD by 1968, the year that the last episode was situated in. No further details have been released from Netflix, but you can bet that Mama T will be on the lookout for an update!HOW TO BE LIKE WARREN BUFFETT: (or at least eat like him ☺) Kathleen loves reading about billionaire Warren Buffett, not only because he's a true Midwest delight but also because he's chosen to remain in Omaha his entire life and doesn't mind sharing some of the simple financial practices that he uses in his everyday life. Kathleen reads an article that outlines 9 frugal habits of Buffett's that we can incorporate to save money, and she laughs at her own approach to “wealth management” and her arguments with her brother Patrick over the cost of a cup of Starbucks coffee. She DOES agree with Buffett's love of McDonald's Egg McMuffin for breakfast and recommends not skipping out on an accompanying Diet Coke just because you can save more money buying the soda by the 12-pack. RALEIGH'S LOST COLONY: Kathleen loves history, and is excited to read an article announcing that archaeologists are embarking on a search for the lost colony of Roanoke in an attempt to determine what happened to the 117 people who completely vanished after its settlement. It's one of the nation's great mysteries: The first permanent colony of English settlers in what would become the United States, specifically North Carolina in 1587 by Sir Walter Raleigh, disappeared three years after it was erected with virtually no trace.THE MOB CHILDREN VS THE FBI: Kathleen laughs out loud reading an article announcing that a fugitive consigliere in Colombo crime family was recently arrested after his son taunted the FBI with a Florida poolside post of his father a day after his suspected mob family was arrested in a New York City raid. The taunting post was hurriedly deleted, but not in enough time for Federal Agents to screengrab the information and enact an arrest plan. Ralph DiMatteo, 66, was the only person mentioned in the federal indictment to evade arrest, and that's because it was able to be proven that he was soaking up the Florida rays. Kathleen muses that even “the children” can be caught at their own games.WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends finishing “Nine Perfect Strangers” on Hulu, continuing through Season 2 of “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” on Hulu, and also listening to upcoming weekly episodes of the ABC News podcast “The Dropout” that is closely following the Elizabeth Holmes trial. Joanne Williams, as a 30 years Mental Health Professional after Looking into studies, if components of Marijuana could help with Anxiety. She Does not support marijuana use or use of substances in general, since they are covering up symptoms, instead of resolving them. I recommend finding ways to resolve your anxiety and get skills or strategies to reduce it without substances for a lifetime of better coping. As a 30-year veteran therapist. I do get asked all the time, my views or opinions on this question. I have taken seminars on this subject and the data came back that there is no clear evidence that Marijuana helps anxiety itself. I think what is clear that is can make anxiety worse, since it is a hallucinogen, and can make you have see things, that are not “normal” or go on “trip” that can be very scary or create paranoia. The other issues, I see is that brain development continues until age 25 in young adults, and any substance that affects the brain, can be detrimental. This article goes into more details: Does marijuana help calm anxiety? Weighing the benefits and risks — and whether it's right for you? By Madeline Kennedy- There is evidence that the CBD compound in marijuana may help treat some anxiety disorders, though research is limited. Though many people report smoking weed to treat their anxiety, the drug could actually make anxiety symptoms worse for some people. Research is scarce about how marijuana can affect anxiety symptoms like irritability, muscle tension, and excessive worrying. For some people, marijuana may even increase anxiety. But a 2015 review of 40 preliminary studies on CBD found that this chemical may play a key role. The researchers said they found encouraging, preliminary results that concentrated doses of CBD oil, when taken regularly, could be an effective treatment for a host of anxiety disorders including: Generalized anxiety disorder Panic disorder Social anxiety disorder Obsessive-compulsive disorder Post-traumatic stress disorder Even if the restrictions on marijuana were lifted, and researchers could use it in their studies, there's another problem. Both anxiety disorders and marijuana sensations are individualized. So, marijuana may help one person with their anxiety but not another. Someone with generalized anxiety disorder symptoms like difficulty sleeping may have a better reaction to marijuana than someone with panic disorder who fears losing control. Even worse, using marijuana could enhance symptoms of anxiety for some people, says James Giordano, PhD, a professor of neurology and biochemistry at Georgetown University Medical Center. “Some are overly sensitive to the ‘activating' effects of THC, and this can induce anxiety, rather than reduce or relieve it,” Giordano says. Latest research: A 2020 study found that higher-potency cannabis may increase the risk of anxiety associated with marijuana use. Before we introduce our incredible guest we want to scream HAPPY PRIDE!!!!!!!!! from the rooftops! Don't be a drag, just be a queen, you hear? Speaking of being OUT and PROUD, this week's guest is comedian and toast of the town....Mr. Brad Loekle!!! In honor of his lack of knowledge of numbers and his mom being a smarty CPA, we start our school day off in Home Ec where we play HOT TAX TAKE where Lindsey attempts to make taxes sexy and it's definitely more lukewarm than it is hot. Then we head on over to Art Conservation class where we learn the difference between Renovation, Restoration, Preservation and Conservation and then forget what they all mean and never ever think about it again. During recess, Brad tells us how he bullied his school to start a theatre program so he could star in a "Little Shop Of Horrors" knock-off called "Little Luncheonette Of Terrors" where he played a lizard person named Mongo. If you aren't stopping everything that you are currently doing to listen to this episode then we don't know what to tell you. After learning of Mongo the lizard person we head back to class and play "Get Our Kicks with Stevie Nicks" where we test Brad's knowledge in everything Stevie Nicks and it turns out that he knows ALMOST everything about this queen and more. Then Kelly takes us to History Class where we learn about historic whores of Gay Paris because, well, this episode is gay and full of whores. Will Brad take the crown? Will Lindsey make it rain? Will Kelly break her losing streak? SHE DOES! SHE DOES! She finally does! Episode 10!!! On this episode, Melissa goes for a walk in nearby Forest Park in Queens, with New York’s own Patty “Boom Boom” Alcivar, professional boxer, Emergency Medical Technician, Spanish Language interpreter, running coach and personal trainer, who is on a mission to be the first Latina from New York City to successfully summit the highest peaks on each of the seven continents, a challenge known as the “7 Summits.” Just a couple of years into this goal, and Patty has already successfully summited 3 — Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua and Mt. Elbrus!Long before Patty found peace and joy in high altitude mountaineering, she found solace in more basic athletic pursuits as an escape from a challenging home life. She began with martial arts, but it was running that really allowed her to escape her thoughts and focus on the present. She credits long-distance running for giving her the courage to leave her abusive home and strike out on her own at the age of 15. With support and encouragement from some top names at The New York Road Runners, she ran her first marathon at 16, she started boxing not long after, and she hasn’t stopped her training or pursuing her goals since. Now at the age of 37, she’s racked up 30 marathons, two Golden Glove Titles, been voted “Athlete of the Year” by the US Olympic Boxing Committee, and has her sights set on the Seven Summits, the most challenging to be Mount Everest. The through line to all of her pursuits is that she is dead-set on her goals and crystal clarity about the purpose in life — to be a good human being, to give back to her community and to be a role model to those that need positive influence. Her mission is called Climbing for a Dream and her aim is to start a foundation that inspires. How does she do it?! She Does. Not. Let. Anything. Stand. In. Her. Way. — For real. Full stop. Throughout the episode, Patty talks with Melissa about what keeps her going, her training regimen, why she doesn’t hit the snooze button and some of the challenges that exist in the pursuit of the Seven Summits — like training for 30,000 feet while living at sea-level. A few minutes of listening to her and your seemingly impossible goals will suddenly feel well within reach. Patty’s is a truly inspiring story— and it’s far from over. Dr. Asmeret Berhe is a soil biogeochemist and the Falasco Endowed Chair in Earth Sciences at the University of California at Merced. Join me in learning about the brave ways Dr. Berhe has shown up for science by making hard decisions and refusing to be pushed out. Learn more about Dr. Berhe's research, watch her TED talk on soil mitigation, and watch her Story Collider on growing up and loving science in a war torn region. TRANSCRIPT Dr. Kate Clancy: Okay, so welcome to yet another round of ‘Ask a Courageous Scientist.” I am going to be asking the same three questions I’ve been asking of everybody and I have been really enjoying the variety of answers that I have been getting from some really astounding scientists. Today I am joined by Professor Asmeret Asefaw Berhe She is a Soil Biogeochemist at the University of California Merced and a full professor over there. (She) Does some amazing work on climate change and I am going to be asking her our three questions today. So, thanks for joining me. Dr. Asmeret Asefaw Berhe: Well, thank you for having me Kate. Clancy: So on to our very first question: What brought you to science? Berhe: So I was, you know, that nerdy kid who liked to read and loved to learn about everything. Through books and talking to folks and listening to radio as a child. I grew up in a household where reading was encouraged a lot. And listening to the radio so that you know about the world, BBC World, when I grew up for example, that was what we listened to in particular with my dad. And I think that just got me into trying to learn more and more things and I grew up, kind of, liking to learn new things not just liking to read, not just my own textbooks but the textbooks of my older siblings. And from time to time I would try to explain it to them, (Laughs) what is in their textbooks, as well as that could go as you can imagine for my younger siblings. They were mad. And that just made things, learning, exciting and interesting to me. So I grew up with the idea that I loved learning, I loved to learn about the natural environment around me and, kind of, that was basically, if you were, my gateway towards learning. And times afterwards I realized, in particular in high school, that I really liked science, in particular chemistry and I was good at it and physics and biology. I had amazing teachers that encouraged, that… you know kind of desire to learn too as well as my parents. And the combination of really getting excited by figuring out new things and learning, you know, new things about the world, that I did not realize were there before. And the fact that I could read and even get more out of that experience, the encouragement from both my parents and the teachers that I had kind of set me on a course to study science. I sought out to study chemistry as a pre-med on the undergraduate level until I studied soil science which was the new thing that I found when I came to college. I really didn’t know too much about soil before then. All of those meant that I got hooked. I realized that not only is this stuff interesting, but it’s also exciting and I found things that I could learn… new things, over and over again. And that just made the learning process exciting for me and science became something that I just fell in love with. And I’ve been learning science since then for a long period of time. For context, where I learned science early on was in Eretria where I was born and raised in East Africa. And it was not easy to necessarily keep focusing on science at the time that I grew up because there was an act of war going on. And so my education had to go on at a time where there was an active armed conflict happening right outside the capital city where I grew up. People’s lives and family’s lives were being interrupted left and right because of war and the combination of family members disappearing because they were getting arrested or God knows what or going out of the town to join the independent struggle. Some leaving the country, exiled to save themselves from what was going on. So there was a lot of disruption happening in the lives of people around us at the time. And so, I think in some ways the idea that my parents kind of brought us into this, that whatever we do in life, we need to be thinking about school and life because that’s about the only wealth, especially in this kind of climate, that the only guaranteed life, path in life is education to take you somewhere. Because you can’t trust anything like wealth or connections. Even peace, as we worked on kind of getting a demonstration in real life at the time that I grew up and they tried to reinforce on us just focus on your school. Whatever you do, try and not lose focus on that school because that’s the only way that… guaranteed way that your life can be set on a good trajectory and a good course for the rest of your life. I think I took that to heart and, in some ways it was also an escape. Learning about school and science was an escape from the reality that was happening right around us. In many ways, science served as a distraction but also a motivating factor of, ‘This has to change’ and something has to be different in our lives and hopefully we can focus on education for a change. And that worked out so that was, kind of my path to science. Loved it because of early influences. If I had to sum it up I would say books, teachers, and parents especially and in spite of everything else that was going on around us those three held, and the interested persisted. Clancy: That’s amazing. That might be the most beautiful answer I’ve gotten so far. So thank you so much for sharing that. Can you tell me one way that you’ve shown courage in science? Berhe: I’ll tell you about courage that I feel like I’ve shown in science, I’ll switch gears and I will not be talking about my early education right now, but rather what happened when I grew up, completed my bachelors in Eretria and moved to the U.S., received a Masters at Michigan State and then moved to the West to pursue a PhD in Biogeochemistry at Berkeley, U.C. Berkeley. And I’ll tell you about that time because one thing I never, kind of, I was naïve and kind of didn’t appreciate as much was how different I would be from everybody else that was in such a big school and the most progressive and most liberal part of the country. Even there so I ended up being as far as I could tell, to this day I could never get my hands on data to confirm or deny this but, as far as I could tell, the only black student that was at that school at the department, so our large interdisciplinary department and graduate students… the only black person for a while. That kind of can give you an impression, it was a very interesting time where most of the people interacted fine with you obviously they minded their own business and everybody’s busy in grad school anyway. But there was at least one person that constantly made it his mission to undermine me and say all sorts of negative things. I wanted to work with this person so I tried to basically bury everything that was happening saying, ‘I don’t need to be friends with this person but they’re a really good scientist. I want to be able to work with them so I am just going to bite my tongue, do whatever they want me to do.’ It went on like that for two years. All sorts of messed up statements and actions that was taken on part of that person. Until I realized, I think it took a long time but it became clear to me that this person did not want me in that environment. And everything that they did to undermine my presence there, to undermine the fact that I was even admitted to the program, over the years cumulated into a final effort to basically, in front of audience, in front of other professors say extremely terrible things to suggest that I don’t belong there. It made it very clear that I do not belong there because I got my bachelors in Africa. Who did I think I was to just come to Berkeley and be able to get a PhD from this department. It’s just not how it should work the people should just not come from my part of the world and be part of this system that they created. That one was almost one of the kind of toughest times in my life especially since it happened at a critical moment in my PhD. And I felt myself just giving up. Just ready to give up and the very least leave that department and find another institution that I could complete my PhD because it became very clear that it was not worth it. This whole psychological toll that this interaction with this individual was taking on me was not worth it. So it required everything that I had and the amazing support of other mentors that I got at that time, new ones and family members and friends to get me to hold on… to just wait, give myself time to not rush into just withdrawing and leaving at that time. And I feel like that was probably what required the most courage because it was, you know, this had already happened two years of continuous and multiple versions of abuse and harassment at the hands of this individual and there were multiple things that were said and done privately and even in the presence of other individuals. I think the combination of all of those things, at the time, made it near impossible for me to stay. I couldn’t quite see what was the point of trying to do a PhD if it was going to cost me my sanity and if I had to continuously be fighting this person and this attitude that I didn’t belong. And there’s nothing that I can do t change where I came from. The only thing I figured I could do was show this individual that I was willing to work hard, I’m willing to do the work that I need to do to earn the degree and advance as I should. But, as you could imagine, this was incredibly hard. I basically decided at some point that he was not worth it. Let’s just move on, find another place to go to. And I think it took a lot of courage for me to be able to recognize that I had reached my limit obviously at this point. But thankfully I had just, you know, had found a new mentor that I was talking to that was willing to just be, say, ‘I recognize this is terrible. No one should be in this position, but let’s not let it ruin the path that you’re in. Let’s figure out a way out of this.’ And my partner, at that time, my boyfriend, who is my husband now who was with me when I went through a lot of it basically said the same thing. It took a couple of friends who saw the toll that it was taking but also how these incremental statements kind of, and actions had reached a critical point as far as how much I could take with concern. And basically, all of them making a plea to me to just hold on, just let it, process it, this is terrible but don’t make any rushed statements. Don’t leave the campus just yet. And I feel like that obviously made a difference, the fact that I stayed ended up being a really good thing because the new mentor that I found ended up being incredibly supportive. He is, to this day, as well as the other two mentors that I got. I ended up having a three-person advising team. That worked beautifully in my favor. That still continues to work beautifully but I think if I, that staying, the deciding to actually give those things a chance though, to me, it felt like it took everything that I had to stay in that environment where, granted a minority, but a member of that community, has made it clear that I don’t belong. And said so in so many words in front of their colleagues. It was incredibly hard to process that emotion. And the fact that it was also sad to realize, even over the years after that, that I couldn’t do anything right in the eyes of this individual. But there were still, and it’s not like this individual started with me. There was record of all sorts of interesting actions and statements but, whatever I do felt like I can’t prove to people that I’m worthy of being in that environment. But a simple statement from this individual carried a huge weight to get me to be perceived as somebody who is unworthy, who is there with all sorts of shading. You know mechanisms, I don’t even know what those are at that point, but in their eyes, and in his eyes, I didn’t belong there because of my background. Somehow, I slipped in, and that was wrong. The fact that I slipped in through the admission process and whatever I did, didn’t seem to make a difference. In fact every, agreement that I had afterwards ended up being a trigger for yet another action for either that individual or people directly connected to him, in particular a couple of people. Even though there was this whole environment that I had, a community of friends, new advisors, you know, a couple of people, in particular one, made it their mission to make my life so difficult in science. And to this day it makes me upset when I think about these things because it required everything I had to hold on. To be able to stay and not leave that program. So if I were to think about, ‘When did I show courage?’ it’s to listen to the positive voices in my life, and regardless of what was happening to just hold on. And that act of holding on and not, kind of, making a rushed decision… well I guess it’s not necessarily fair to call it a rushed decision because it happened over a couple of years (Laughs). But still to make that decision and just get out of there… was probably the most courageous one I could think of. Clancy: Absolutely, no I couldn’t agree more. I mean that fact that you showed up every day while dealing with all of that abuse… and the fact that you did. So many people think that the wisest thing is to stick it out in the abusive situation and it does so much courage and fortitude and it’s so difficult. It’s a difficult path to change mentors… and you did it. That’s amazing. So I’m so glad you’re here. I’m so glad that you did it and I’m so glad you’re here. Berhe: Yeah changing was the best decision but it’s funny because it’s happened because I tried to report the individual that was just going… I had enough of the harassment and I tried to take formal steps to report the harasser, but his department colleague who was in charge of graduate students, who was appointed to look after the welfare of graduate students, just… she didn’t want to hear me. She didn’t want to hear this at all and so she kept dismissing me saying, ‘You’re not really saying anything. You’re not really reporting anything,’ even as I’m telling her, exactly the way I’m telling you. One thing I will give her credit for though is when I told her, ‘I really don’t know what to do,’ she named the individual who actually ended up being my advisor and said, ‘Have you talked to him? He tends to be a fairly reasonable person.’ And that folks can work with him, folks from very different scientific areas and backgrounds seemed to work with him totally fine. He was a little outside my field so he wasn’t necessarily someone that I thought about. But after my conversation with her, even though I was crushed by the fact that she didn’t want to hear me… she didn’t even want me to report this. It was kind of, you know, weird but at least the lead to the positive idea of reaching out to this other professor who ended up being… just exactly what you want. The advisor to be. And that was probably the best decision I made. Another great decision because if didn’t reach out to him and he didn’t agree to advise me going forward from that path then definitely, there would not have been a path for me to stay there. Clancy: So then that leads me to my final question which is: What do you want others to know about how to be a courageous scientist? Berhe: I think a few things that I think that everybody should no is: One, accept the fact that it sucks to go through something like this. It sucks to have somebody question you and your background and your integrity and denigrate you day in and day out. And everything that you do to be questioned and everything that you are and you integrity and everything to be put into question and your hard work, devalued… it sucks. And I think it’s important to recognize that as a human being. It sucks to go through something like this. But if I were to advise anybody to think through situations like this, what I would say is: one, make sure you surround yourself with supportive people. There is no substitute for that. There are plenty of people doing amazingly good science and there are plenty turns that science can take. And so it’s fine even if you don’t stick to exactly the scientific path you started out with because I think your welfare is way more important. I would choose a healthy climate, a low pace climate, and a healthy advising arrangement over anything. It’s not worth it. It’s not worth to lose your sanity and… you know kind of your health to suffer in so many ways trying to stay in environments like this. None of their credentials and accolades as ‘big deal’ scientists matter, at the end of the day, to you if they drive you insane. That’s, kind of, what I put myself through initially because I was naïve right? I told myself that, ‘I don’t need him to be my friend.’ I just need to work with this incredible scientist who had accomplished so much and so I took the abuse and it escalated over time but I took it in all sorts of different ways because this person started doubting my… me in like the first five minutes. Doubting me in like the first five minutes of our interaction. Five minutes after we met he questioned my record and told me to take introduction to soil science if I wanted to stay in that program. And I say, ‘I got a bachelors in soil science… I actually was near the top of my class when I got a bachelors in soil science. Why would I need to take introduction?’ And he’s like ‘But this is Berkeley, its taught differently in Africa. And I’m like, ‘How do you know what I learned in Africa?’ Like what do you know about introduction… imagine having so much arrogance thinking an introduction to soil science course at Berkeley is not equivalent to even a bachelors degree at any other part of the world. I feel like that should have been a good clue right? But I just tried to ignore that. I tried to ignore so many things over the years so listen to that nagging voice in your head if there is, if there seems to be something wrong, do not ignore it, do not try to bury it. Surround yourself with the right community and it is okay to fall apart. Hopefully you have surrounded yourself with people that can pick you up at the time that you need support but it should be okay because I think maybe because I was pretty open about how broken up I was about this whole process and how sad I was about what was going on, I ended up finding incredible, not just mentors that provided the support that I needed but also friends. And a partner that saw exactly how much this affected me and where they are to provide the support that I needed at that time, in particular, the community that I needed at that time to have a positive community of people that did not have, that did come with those biases and baggage of opinions that clearly just one individual did and recognize that just one person is all it takes to do a lot of damage. You don’t need a large number of harassers or racists or misogynists to create a problem for underrepresented folks, all it takes is one. And hopefully our institutions recognize that and because we are able to do something about that one individual then hopefully not so many people have to keep suffering under one individual. Clancy: I couldn’t agree more. You know a lot of my research on harassment, one of the things that appalls me is when people push me on my methods or try to say that the percentages of some population I have been looking at are not that high, then I’ll say but… forty percent harassment, twenty percent, eighty percent harassment… these are all bad numbers because they’re greater than zero. Like… they don’t…. Berhe: (Laughs) Exactly. Clancy: What’s the minimal acceptable quantity? I don’t think that… I don’t think a non-zero number is acceptable because of the way, like you said one person can just do so much damage. Thank you for saying that and for prioritizing a healthy climate and telling our listeners how important it is to listen to yourself too. And I’m glad that you listened to your voice cause I’m glad you’re here. Berhe: Thank you. Appreciate that. Clancy: Thank you so so so much. I really appreciate this. Berhe: You’re welcome. I hope it’s useful, appreciate it. Thank you for doing this. Clancy: Absolutely. Clancy (Outro): Thanks for joining me for the courageous scientist podcast. Like I said, this is a short-term passion project to keep me sane during the pandemic so, I don’t want your money. Please do tell budding scientists and educators of all ages about the podcast because I think they’ll like it. Fitness marketing to midlife women, that works Five years ago she was ignored. Today she's not ignored but she's stereotyped. Midlife woman trying too hard to look younger, a face frozen and plumped with Botox, wearing clothes she can share (but look slightly “off”) with her daughter. A midlife woman who's operating on the 1980s metabolism science she learned. Relies on calories, steps, heart rate, and data, that ignore the state of her hormones. A midlife woman who enjoys at least a glass and maybe three of wine most days, starts with coffee and flirts with fasting but has no idea what a “healthy diet” is for her today. A midlife woman who thinks exercise is about burning… calories, off fat… so she can “fix” what she doesn't love about her body. She's all these and more. If she gets a compliment it's veiled in a disclaimer. You look great for your age. Body shape motives are not the only thing that gets her going. Promoting weight loss may be detrimental to her participation. Don't forget the women who don't need to lose weight but who have experienced a relocation of body weight, those with disease risk factors, who want more energy, want to be proactive in aging, or gain bone density. Women control an incredible amount of buying power. Even before women were in the workplace equally they influenced 80% of household decisions. They still do now that they are in the workplace. They are diverse. Even marketing to the niche of women post menopause is unique. ICAA categorizes them as “athletic” if they regularly exercise 3 or more times a week. For some this is running, biking, lifting and swimming, but for others it's a walk or yoga. So, clearly you can't treat them all the same. Naturally, though, it's easy to think you know her. You may be her. Your mom, aunts, or prior clients are her. Therearecommon denominators. But the things that make them unique are what make their program and the way you attract them and serve them unique. If you miss them, you'll lose her. Barriers to marketing to midlife women: “For active, athletic, middle-aged women there is just nothing. A 22-year old doesn't get it and I'm not in wheel chair, there isn't much for us between.” Even if you offer something between the gap described above by a Flipping 50 program participant, you may not be getting the message across. You want to reach her: 1) Where she is 2) With a message created for her 2) In a way she hears it 3) Without offending her The Biggest Mistakes Fitness Marketers Make (and we're all fitness marketers) Thinking they are all the same: How do you think of them? Do you imagine they're frail, stiff, in pain, lack energy, did aerobics with Jane Fonda or Jackie Sorensen, are empty-nesters, have grandchildren, have belly fat, cellulite, want weight loss, want belly fat loss… Did you know? Some of them are doing their first triathlons, learning to swim so they don't drown in open water, going to training camps to ride bikes in mountains, skiing downhill at 50 miles an hour, wearing bikinis, learning to weight lifts and have kindergarteners? And starting their entire lives over by themselves or with someone new, starting businesses… so they're not afraid of a little grind. Thinking you know their goal: If the title of your program isn't a coffee table book you'd happily display at your home, rethink it. No 50-something, 60-something, and there's a strong chance 70-something wants to “own” needing a fall risk reduction class. She doesn't want to buy the fear she wants to buy the transformation. Don't think you know what she wants. Don't put it into words what she needs with your titles. Describe what she wants. It might be performance – golf, running, starting triathlon, (or anything else after retirement). It might be to avoid cognitive decline, depression, anxiety, or muscle or bone density losses. More positively though, it is hope. This year, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her controversial debut, Switzer ran the Boston Marathon again with the same bib number she wore in her first. "People still treat older people the way they treated us women 50 years ago, which is, 'Be careful! You might hurt yourself!' when in fact the opposite is the case," Switzer told Prevention. "The more you do, the more you can do! There are lots of women who have run marathons at 70, 80, even 90. I was only eighth in my age group at Boston [in 2017], for heaven's sake!" Prevention Magazine, Nov. 2017 Examples of Michele Obama, Ernestine Shepherd, Madonna Buder -The Iron Nun, and a growing number of aging iconic fitness professionals are showing the world a new way to age. But it's not normal yet. Because even she will say, “I think I look pretty good for my age.”She'll say, “I'm getting so old.” She'll say that even while she doesn't want to be treated as “old” or invisible. She feels invisible. Environment is everything. Have you noticed how people are flocking to sites where exercise over 50 or aging is included in the title? If positive things happen there, people will gather. Be one of them. Be positive. Be correct, but be positive. Growing Bolder is one of the most well-know sites for older adults. Why? It positively portrays aging. It defies traditional treatment of aging. It makes fun on occasion of older adults. But it does so in a playful, not condescending way. The Aging Triathlete and Thriving Not Surviving are two Facebook pages by midlife and older women describing their own journeys from inactive, or in need of a health intervention, to triathlon training. Did you know? Age-related decline in triathlon (swim, run, and bike) starts earlier in swimming than in cycling or running. Isn't that bizarre since you and I would both probably recommend swimming more and more as someone got more limited with joint issues. Not Acknowledging Their Barriers Not knowing how far and wide fitness benefits take them Not having had good examples Having old habits and thoughts about exercise Time (perceived need) Fear of getting hurt Lack of trust for fitness “professionals” Relate to Her and Overcome Objections You might be thinking…is a golden phrase to use when you're working on this type of copy. Create a Better Offer: Solve a real problem They know they have They are actively seeking a solution for They have some urgency for So you can… Relate to Her. You must: Be Vulnerable Tell a Rags-to-Riches story Reveal your real life vs. Cinderella life Tell your story… Start with, when I was… Know What She Wants, What She REALLY Wants It's not weight loss. It's not dumbbells. It's not a scale or tape measure. It's not a salad. What is your WHY? Your Why Your Business Why Why she should do it right now Get testimonials for marketing to midlife women from midlife women. How do you get a perfect testimonial? This question: What almost stopped you from registering/getting started? Audit your images: Are you showing HER? Are you showing the dream? She doubts: Your program will work For her She doubts her. Universal Truths of Marketing to Midlife Women She thinks she's unique. She thinks she's flawed. She thinks she's uniquely flawed. It's not a good time. Just because you've always done something or thought a certain way doesn't mean you can't change it. She has free will. She's failed before. This is not her first rodeo. Success dulls the knife. Failure sharpens it. Failure is data. She doesn't know that yet or think it yet. She blames failure on a lack of willpower, discipline, or motivation. She's a prove-it-to-me girl. Make sure you know what you're talking about. Facts and what she calls herself. 70-year olds don't call themselves “seniors.” 50-year olds resent getting the AARP card in the mail. She doesn't recognize herself in the mirror sometimes. Write copy like you ARE your ideal customer. Get a copywriter that is your ideal customer. If you have a 20-something writing copy or on social media make sure they give you examples of their work. Get a focus group together and get their thoughts. Listen to them. Don't object or defend. Let your current customer tell you what they would have wanted to hear. Interview. Have a Third Party interview your ideal customer. Create 5-6 questions. Use these as examples: If you could wave a magic wand what would you like to change about your fitness right now? How long have you felt this way? What have you tried? What do you hate about _______? What would you love to see change? Is there anything else you'd like to add? She likes to give and she'll support businesses that do more than profit or provide a service. Partner with a charity (shoes, mittens, winter coat drive, food pantry) Percent of proceeds donated Employ underprivileged Support water in the world Scholarship youth into your programs Host community events Change your approach What if you mocked your own product and service? Explain how it works instead of catchy titles. All the things that midlife women hate and turn them off… Baby Gap shirts on muscle bound men Made-up women working out in LuLulemons Chicken breast and egg whites Walking into the male dominated weight room Pink Dumbbells are Your Enemy! Women respond to colors of the sunset. She IS working. She may have the corner office. She IS overwhelmed. She DOES think a lot about her family and juggle responsibilities. She is willing to spend. She's not finding good choices. She wants someone who understands her kinesiology, physiology, endocrine system, and her socialization. She's got some unlearning to do. She may decide to do a marathon or a triathlon in a decade or so. She's not done. But she does need to get started. These and more are the way to fix mistakes you're making in marketing to midlife women, make yourself the best choice, and once you get her, help her and keep her loving life… and the role you play in it. Isn't that what it's all about? If you'd like some help. But you're not sure where to start. Yet the idea of being a coach with a business you love helping women love their lives sounds like exactly what you want to do… and you want to stop having a hobby and start having a business – with a life – then set up a time to talk about how to make that happen. I'll give you my input on what you need to have a business model that works. You may choose not to pursue it but you'll know. BOOK a Consultation

A conversation with Linda Booker (strawsfilm.com/#home-section), producer of the documentary, STRAWS, about the peril of straws in our seas. Look for biodegradable products and demand them. The technology is out there, but the products are still prohibitively expensive for restaurants and businesses to give them away. Even cutlery can be biodegradable, but its not widely distributed. Demand real biodegradable disposable utensils/straws, and make room for those industries to grow. The demand will drive down the price. The price will dictate the market penetration. Canada's top R&B singer and song writer, actress, co-founder of Empowered in my skin, actress, radio host of Blackout on Radio Newstalk 1010. She DOES a lot and IS a lot to many people! How does she manage this?? Our discussion on capacity rocked my world because, we laughed, we got emotional and we learned from each other!! That is what this is all about!
Today, Johnny talks with Mel Tillekeratne from the Monday Night Mission, to discuss the importance of the SheDoes movement and why crisis shelters are important to Los Angeles. In the second hour, Johnny talks with comedian Mona Shaikh, about her journey as a comedian, and Bob Forrest from the Don't Die podcast, joins Johnny to talk about the recovery from drugs.
The innkeeper arrives at Rands door with more invitations. This time from the two most powerful houses in Cairhien. Hurin explains that these invitations can not be ignored. Rand has to accept at least one, or assassins will start coming after him. There is no way out of the city without being attacked by Fain. The longer they stay, the deeper Rand becomes tangled in Daes Daes'mar. When Rand leaves the inn to see if Ingtar and the Shienarans have arrived to bail him out, he returns to find that it's now a structure fire. Hurin was attacked, and the chest stolen. Loial and Rand manage to drag his unconscious form out of the building, saving him from being burned alive. Verin, Mat, Perrin, and the Shienarans arrive just a few minutes too late. We talk about how Rand has fallen into the leadership role Moiraine placed him in. Barthanes's manner was built in the last few years right on top of an Ogier Grove. It has it's own Waygate and that's where Fain is headed with the Horn and the Dagger, with the Black Wind to guard his retreat. While Ingtar despairs over the Horn, Rand tells Verin about the portal stone, and Selene. Does Verin know that Selene is Lanfear? She has all the clues, and has often understood more with less information. She DOES manage to come up with the strategy though, that will eventually get the Horn back. We believe the Pattern won't let Ingtar get to the Horn, ever. Was Barthanes at the infamous Darkfriend social? Was Verin? Could Rand have channeled using only the Choedan Kal with out the access key, is that possible? Elaine McMillion Sheldon and Sarah Ginsburg (that’s us) are co-creators, producers and hosts of this very show, She Does podcast, and maybe you got hints of this from listening to episodes of the show, but first and foremost, we’re documentary filmmakers. In this episode, the tables are somewhat turned and we are asked a few questions by our dear friend, production assistant and member of the documentary community herself, Alijah Case. We talk about what we’ve been up to outside of the podcast and what we are planning on getting into now that we’ve officially decided to taper back on releasing episodes of this show. We aren’t calling it quits completely, especially because we LOVE She Does and have over 10 interviews in the can with some incredible women, but we have decided to edit and release episodes on our own time. We elaborate on all of the news and future plans in this special ‘it’s-not-goodbye-it’s-see-you-later’ episode, reflect on the 31 plus episodes we put out over the last year and the women featured in them, wonderful, impressive, yet very human, each in their own unique way. While the process proved to be quite labor and time intensive, it’s been one of those experiences so magical and so fruitful that it’s hard to put into words, but we do our best with the guidance of Alijah, insights from our illustrator Christine Cover, and music and words by Nona Marie Invie, who recently released an EP titled Sisters with her latest project RONiiA. And as always, thank YOU for listening to She Does.

In 2014, Greta Morgan released her first album as Springtime Carnivore. Following that release she has had an exciting 2015; touring with Of Montreal, Father John Misty and Jenny Lewis. In this bonus episode, we talk to Greta about her process, motivations and her upcoming album. Springtime Carnivore’s music soundtracked comedian Pamela Ribon’s stories in Episode 17 of She Does.
Katerina Cizek is an innovative documentary storyteller who works across many media platforms. She’s currently the director of the National Film Board of Canada’s multi-year project entitled HIGHRISE, which examines life inside residential skyscrapers in suburbs around the world. Since it launched in 2009, HIGHRISE has generated interactive documentaries, mobile productions, live presentations, installations and films that have garnered Emmys, a Peabody, Webby Awards and recognition from the World Press Photo and IDFA Doc Lab, among others. On June 2, 2015, Kat and the NFB released the latest and final HIGHRISE project, “Universe Within,” that explores people’s digital lives online. In episode 11 of She Does podcast, Kat talks about her life growing up in Waterloo in the late 60’s, after her parents escaped the Russian invasion of what was then Czechoslovakia. About being at the frontlines of the Oka Crisis in Canada, a defining moment in her career and first-nations history. And her nearly 11-year relationship with the National Film Board of Canada through the Filmmaker in Residence and HIGHRISE projects. Kat helps us realize new ways to approaches technology in meaningful ways, and challenges us to evaluate our methods and ethics as storytellers. Our featured musicmaker this week is Audrey Ryan.
Linda Pan’s parents moved from China to Saskatoon, Canada--making Linda a first-generation citizen. They persuaded Linda to follow a path similar to theirs: electrical engineering. So she did. After two engineering degrees and a handful of hard family conversations, Linda talks about how she transitioned from electrical engineering to media business, attended Harvard Business School and climbed the ladder at MRC and Netflix. Today, Linda is the general manager of SundanceNow Doc Club and Vice President of Business Development at AMC Networks. Similar to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, Sundance Now Doc Club offers a place for both longtime documentary lovers and those new to the genre, to stream classics and new releases. Learn how Linda, your video clerk on the Internet, curates and stocks the shelves and makes the business decisions behind what the new streaming service offers. Our featured MusicMaker this week is the talented Casey Dienel, of White Hinterland. At the end of the show, stick around to hear about Casey’s journey touring around the world as a singer/songwriter. SHE DOES podcast, hosted by Elaine Sheldon and Sarah Ginsburg, showcases conversations with women making their mark in media. Going beyond their current career status, we explore each woman's past to understand how their personality, background and philosophy informs their work.
Hanna Polak, a Polish director and producer, has the stamina and guts that most filmmakers would envy. And now audiences at film festivals around the world are experiencing her dedication through “Something Better To Come,” a documentary that Hanna shot over the span of 14 years. The documentary follows the lives of Russians living in a massive garbage dump, located 12 miles from the center of Moscow. Hanna filmed many people living in the garbage dump, but one person in particular stood out: a young girl named Yula. We watch Yula grow up on-screen, experimenting with hair dye and makeup, foraging for food and shelter, as well as witnessing some firsts: trying her chances with alcohol, cigarettes and young love. Hanna previously directed the short film, “The Children of Leningradsky,” which explores the lives of homeless children living in Moscow train stations. The film received an Oscar nomination, an International Documentary Association Award for Best Documentary, two Emmy nominations, and the Gracie Allen Award, given by Women in Radio and Television. But there are many moments when Hanna puts down her camera and serves as an activist. In 1997, as part of her work in Russia, she founded and later collaborated with Active Child Aid to help support the children of Russia and in 2006 she was awarded the prestigious Golden Heart Award. Hanna shares the challenges of shooting and editing a film for 14 years, as well as a special memory with documentary pioneer, Ricky Leacock. Doc fans: this episode is not to be missed. Also, our featured musicmaker this week is Taryn Blake Miller from Your Friend. SHE DOES podcast, hosted by Elaine Sheldon and Sarah Ginsburg, showcases conversations with women making their mark in media. Ingrid Kopp has been exploring the highest peaks and lowest valleys of independent film for the past 15 years and for the past 6 years has been island hopping to discover intersections between storytelling, social media and technology. As the Director of Interactive at the Tribeca Film Institute, Ingrid supports interactive and cross-platform projects through the TFI New Media Fund and TAA Interactive Prototype Fund. She is the creator of Tribeca Hacks, TFI Interactive and the curator of Storyscapes at the Tribeca Film Festival. All of these spaces invite story, tech and design into the same room to foster conversations and collaborations. In this episode of She Does, Ingrid talks about growing up in South Africa during apartheid, the balance between offline and online communities, lack of diversity in technology and curation, and her dreams to write a book and climb Mt. Kilimanjaro--at the same time. SHE DOES podcast, hosted by Elaine Sheldon and Sarah Ginsburg, showcases conversations with women making their mark in media.
