GG Hawkins continues No Film School's 2026 distribution experiment with filmmaker Pete Ohs, focusing on the release of Erupcja, his Warsaw-shot microbudget feature starring Charli XCX, Lena Góra, Will Madden, and Jeremy O. Harris. Pete breaks down how the movie was made, how its TIFF premiere led to a deal with One Two Special, and what he learned from theatrical touring, Q&As, VOD timing, marketing assets, fan edits, and the emotional sustainability of releasing independent films. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guest Pete Ohs discuss... Making Erupcja in Warsaw, Poland, with Charli XCX and a small, experimental production model How SAG's Global Rule One affected the budget of an international indie production Premiering at TIFF and navigating sales conversations with CAA and multiple distributors Why Pete chose One Two Special based on alignment, communication, and “vibes” Building a release around Q&As, theatrical events, and in-person audience engagement Creating playful marketing assets, including a zine, a voicemail phone line, and fan-edit materials Releasing trailer stems and encouraging remix culture around the film How theatrical box office expectations were framed for a movie made under $100,000 The limits of relying on actors or stars to carry indie film promotion Why filmmakers should treat Q&As as another form of storytelling The idea of “regional filmmaking” and creating meaningful local releases Finishing and releasing projects as part of sustaining a long-term filmmaking practice Memorable Quotes: “We went to Poland in August of 2024 for two weeks with half of an outline and shot the movie in order.” “If the numbers were better or the percentages were better, but the vibe was worse. Ben and Ione are fresh off Ben's Tasmanian tour — and they have opinions. They break down their first encounter with actual Tasmanian devils (terrifying, zombie-like, cannot be explained), rave about Woolworths Flu Shot (a six-piece punk band from Hobart who just might be the best new band in Australia), and dissect the Butthole Surfers documentary The Whole Truth and Nothing But — asking the bigger question: is transgressive art always rooted in personal trauma?Plus: Richard Pryor's bisexuality and what it meant to be that openly queer as a Black performer in the 70s, Phoebe Bridgers' no-phones tour as a stroke of marketing genius, and a full decode of the Charli XCX Music Fashion Film album cover — what does choosing John Cale, Martin Scorsese, and Marc Jacobs actually say about where she's headed? Also: Ione reveals the four fictional characters she most identifies with (one of them is Woodstock from Peanuts), and Ben has early intel on Folk Bitch Trio, the Australian band about to blow up internationally.Take a deeper dive into our world at https://weirdertogether.substack.com
Brenton and Tyson dive into another big week of touring rumours, festival speculation and music industry chaos, from Good Things theories around Limp Bizkit, John Summit potentially lining up for New Year's festivals and whether Charli XCX could bring her arena run to Australia. They also unpack Phoebe Bridgers' no-phones shows, Primavera's freak storm cancellations and asking why Australian music is disappearing from the local streaming charts.Got a question for the pod? For this Out Takes, we put the spotlight on three queer filmmakers whose films are featured in this year's Sydney Film Festival which is on now until June 14. First up, we spoke with Gregg Araki, the legendary gay filmmaker whose latest film ‘I Want Your Sex’ is a queer highlight in this year's Sydney Film Festival program. Noted for his involvement with the New Queer Cinema movement, his filmography includes the Teenage Apocalypse film trilogy from the 90’s and his 2010 film Kaboom was also the inaugural winner of the Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. His latest film stars Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman and Charli XCX in what has been described as an enjoyably outrageous, risqué sex-comedy, set in the Los Angeles contemporary art scene. We jumped at the chance to speak with him and in this interview, we discussed his motivation for telling this story, his influence on the lead characters and how he feels now about being labelled one of the pioneers of New Queer Cinema. Next up, we took a look at ‘Joy Boy: A Tribute To Julius Eastman’ which is described as a prismatic, polyphonic tribute by six artists to the prolific visionary queer African American composer and noted as one of the unsung pioneers of 20th century minimalism. Created by a collective of Belgian-Congolese artists, this spell-binding film channels the radical energy of Julius Eastman, a Black, gay iconoclast who challenged the conventions of minimalism, fusing avant-garde techniques with pop and free jazz in 1970s and ’80s New York. Structured in four chapters, the film honours Eastman’s key works through incredible visuals, archival recordings and exuberant choreography. Two of the people involved in the project are curator, researcher, and artist Mawena Yehouessi who positions herself as a “collisionist,” stating she explores the frictions and assemblages between disciplines, formats, and narratives; and composer, artist, and performer Fallon Manyanja who in her work mobilizes different relationships with our environment and social, inter-relational, and self-reflexive ideas. W caught up with the real-life couple online from their Paris apartment to discuss the project in the lead up to it screening at this year's Sydney Film Festival and we discussed how they first came to know about Julius Eastman and his work, their process in bringing these stories together to explore his prolific career and more. In this special collaborative episode with Dance or Die, I'm talking to Derrick Estrada, better known in the worlds of breakcore, hardcore, jungle and sonic synthesis as Baseck. Baseck was raised in Lancaster, California halfway between the Angeles National Forest and the Mojave Desert. As a youth he became intoxicated by car bass test CDs, scratch records, jungle mixtapes, gangster rap, and illegal raves. Put this all in a blender with DIY punk, Chicano subculture and a battle mentality and you get halfway to what Baseck is about. Sometimes Baseck is playing wild shows that combine turntablism, live hardware, modded gameboys and thrash vocals; sometimes he is throwing raves, designing clothes, doing noise shows at the museum, or making synth modules. He's collaborated with Boys Noize, Charli XCX, A.G. Cook and Zach de la Rocha and recorded for too many labels to name. He calls in from his current home in Tulsa, Oklahoma to talk about cutty L.A. raves, Midwest hardcore, sonic transformation and how he became a warrior of the breaks. This is part one of a two part episode, hosted by Vivian Host aka Star Eyes. For more info and extras, visit Ravetothegrave.org or Instagram @ravetothe.grave.

Girl beef, so confusing! I'm fascinated every single time I hear about any variation of a complicated female dynamic - whether it's a friendship breakup, a screenshot a friend sends you, or a coded interview quote that everyone knows is about one specific person but nobody will say out loud. Today we're getting into all of it: the psychology of relational aggression and why girls have been doing this forever, why nobody wants to talk about it, and what celebrity culture reveals about these dynamics that your real life never could. We're breaking down Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift's years-long coded exchanges, the Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber copying spiral that goes way deeper than a tattoo, and the Charli XCX and Lorde WORKING IT OUT on the remix haha that actually gave us a rare happy ending...plus real listener submissions about frenemies at work, girls who copied everything down to their vintage couch, and the best friend you love but also kind of can't stand sometimes. "So we're doing this, right?" The new film from David Lowery, the director of The Green Knight, is not a love story, it's not a ghost story, and a lot of people aren't sure what it is at all. We know it's definitely about a very Gaga-esque pop star played by Anne Hathaway trying to heal the wounds of the past with her estranged dress designer (Michaela Coel), and we know it's got a storming FKA Twigs cameo which qualifies it for this show. But what lies beyond these facts?Join Graham and Robyn as they look at the many musical and cinematic inspirations Lowery and Hathaway took - from Persona to Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour! - and discuss the film's soundtrack cuts from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff and Twigs herself. We also talk about the responses we had to the film - both emotional and stigmatic - talk about Charli's busy year at the movies, and relitigate the eternal question of whether Jack Antonoff is actually a good producer or not. Plus a bit of Billie Eilish concert film talk, if that's your bag.If you don't want to see us doing mildly lewd Gievenchy adverts for money, you can donate to our Patreon where you'll get Graham's new culture podcast The Arts Hole, plus Rob's franchise run-down They'll Love Us When We're Dead, weekly written articles about Doctor Who and The Twilight Zone, and more. We went around the world for this Out Takes, featuring some of the latest queer films on offer this May from Chile, Germany and the UK . With the 2026 HSBC German Film Festival back on in Melbourne until May 28, we had the opportunity to speak with director Faraz Shariat about their film ‘Prosecution’ which is one of the featured Australian Premieres in this year’s festival. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2026 Berlinale, ‘Prosecution’ is described an engrossing tale of good versus evil that cleverly combines legal drama and thriller for a powerful and urgent story about the realities of Germany's judicial system. Our exclusive interview with Faraz Shariat saw us cover a wide range of topics related to the film and its exploration of queerness for the main character. We also reviewed ‘The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo‘, an intense and at times fantastical drama written and directed by Diego Céspedes that is streaming now on Mubi. The film unfolds in the early 1980’s in Chile in a dusty mining town nestled in the Atacama Desert, where eleven-year-old Lidia is the only child raised in a household of queer performers working at a local cantina. With his widely acclaimed feature debut, Céspedes emerges as a distinctive cinematic voice, crafting a poetic vision of love and resilience that also reflects the marginalisation and violence faced by queer communities today. Our final review for this program was ‘Mother Mary’, directed by David Lowery and featuring an incredible all female ensemble cast including Michaela Coel, Anne Hathaway, Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber and FKA Twigs, the film explores the complicated professional and personal relationship between iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) who reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance. ‘Mother Mary’ is in cinemas now and features original music written and produced by Charli XCX, FKA Twigs and Jack Antonoff and sang by Anne Hathaway. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 16, 2026 is: kiki KEE-kee noun Kiki is a slang term used for an informal gathering among close friends, especially to share lively gossip or frank conversation. It can also refer more broadly to gossipy conversation. Kiki is especially used in and associated with LGBTQ+ and Black communities. // The performers had a kiki backstage before the show. See the entry > Examples: “The year 2024 will long be remembered in pop culture as the year of #bratsummer, christened, of course, by the early-June release of an instantly-iconic pop album, Charli XCX's Brat. It was the cultural equivalent of the hippies' summer of love in 1967, but for the girls and gays a singular moment in time when every day offered the chance of a kiki and every night flirted with throwing a rave.” — Vanessa Quilantan, The Dallas Observer, 26 Aug. 2025 Did you know? Let's chitchat about the word kiki, a fun word for a fun, gossipy gathering. While its exact origins are unclear, we know that kiki has roots in the ballroom community, a primarily Black and Latino drag subculture that spread in US cities especially in the 1980s–90s. In the early 2000s, a movement emerged within ball culture that was often referred to as the kiki scene. This involved support groups and social services for LGBTQ+ youth, and provided opportunities to socialize, including in the form of so-called kiki balls, or festive, party-like drag performances. This scene was notably captured in the 2016 documentary Kiki, popularly considered a sequel to 1990's Paris is Burning. Kiki is also used as a verb meaning “to share lively gossip or frank conversation”—in other words, “to have a kiki.”

Our latest episode of Soundtracking is one of our faves, as David Lowery returns for a fourth time to discuss the music of Mother Mary - recorded at a special event hosted by our good friends at Spotify. Starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, it tells the story of a iconic popstar whose reunion with a former costume designer forces her to confront her past. Mother Mary features several original songs, which David put together with the help of FKA Twigs, Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff. Regular co-collaborator, Daniel Hart, meanwhile provides the score. We also hear from Billie Elish and James Cameron, in an interview you can watch in full at our Youtube channel, Soundtracking Extra.
This week, the BGH gang dives into the meta slasher “Faces of Death” (2026)—a surprisingly entertaining meditation on online violence and its consumption. Inspired by one of the most notorious shockumentaries ever made, this modern horror film explores the blurred line between reality and exploitation. Along the way, the crew breaks down why Dacre Montgomery's generic handsomeness is actually terrifying, explores the hosts and live viewers experiences with the original shocker, and discusses why content moderation is the scariest job in America. Then things get spicy when Rachel brings up the AI-generated Val Kilmer film nobody asked for. “Faces of Death” is a 2026 American horror film and a reimagining of the infamous 1978 film of the same name. Directed by Daniel Goldhaber (Cam) and co-written with Isa Mazzei (Cam), it stars Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, Aaron Holliday, Jermaine Fowler, and Charli XCX.
