The human element of HR technology is often overlooked in favor of features and functions but, as our latest HRchat episode reveals, successful HCM technology implementation hinges on strategic alignment with business goals and effective change management.Jacqueline Kuhn and Priscilla Redd Sparrow, two of the four authors of the newly updated second edition of HRchitect's Guide to HCM Technology: What You Need to Know Before Your Next HCM Technology Purchase, share crucial insights that challenge conventional thinking about HR technology investments. The most striking revelation? Many HR leaders still position technology as a departmental efficiency tool rather than what it should be – a strategic business asset that puts critical information in decision-makers' hands. When evaluating potential vendors, beware of representatives who dance around direct questions or offer superficial change management support disguised as comprehensive solutions. As Priscilla explains, effective change management goes far beyond basic communication and training, requiring dedicated resources and a structured approach that engages employees throughout the implementation journey. Organizations must recognize that real change begins at go-live, not ends there, with different individuals adapting at varying paces. The AI revolution has made HCM systems more user-friendly for practitioners, but its effectiveness depends entirely on data quality. Organizations must ensure clean, comprehensive data structures and move away from manual spreadsheet processes that undermine AI-driven insights. Regardless of company size, powerful tools are now accessible at various price points – the key is understanding your specific needs and selecting appropriate solutions.Perhaps most importantly, HR professionals must embrace this guiding principle: "AI isn't going to replace you, but if you're not using AI, you will be replaced by someone who is." With insufficient resources and poor planning ranking as the top reasons technology projects fail, strategic investment in consulting support often makes the difference between success and failure. Remember that purchasing and implementing technology is just the beginning – the real value emerges through effective utilization and maintenance over time.Support the showFeature Your Brand on the HRchat PodcastThe HRchat show has had 100,000s of downloads and is frequently listed as one of the most popular global podcasts for HR pros, Talent execs and leaders. In this episode of The Think Wildlife Podcast, we dive into the dynamic intersection of conservation, climate finance, and community-driven solutions with Mike Korchinsky, the founder and president of Wildlife Works. Our conversation explores how market-based mechanisms such as carbon credits and REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) are revolutionizing the way we approach wildlife conservation, forest protection, and sustainable development.Understanding the Role of Carbon Credits in ConservationOver the last few years, there has been a growing global interest in financing climate solutions through mechanisms like biodiversity credits and carbon credits. These financial instruments incentivize forest communities and landowners to preserve ecosystems by providing an economic value to keeping forests intact. Wildlife Works is at the forefront of this movement, pioneering economic models that directly benefit local communities while safeguarding biodiversity. But how do carbon credits work?Mike breaks down the fundamental principles of carbon credits, explaining how they are measured, issued, and traded in the voluntary carbon market. He highlights that one of Wildlife Works' major successes is its ability to convert conservation into a sustainable livelihood for communities that would otherwise be forced to engage in activities like logging or slash-and-burn agriculture.Wildlife Works: A Market-Based Conservation ModelMike takes us through his personal journey into conservation, tracing his early fascination with wildlife, particularly elephants, and how his first visit to Africa in the mid-1990s exposed him to the pressing conflict between human development and wildlife protection. Recognizing that traditional conservation models were insufficient, he founded Wildlife Works in 1998 with the belief that economic incentives could be a game-changer in protecting endangered ecosystems. One of the most remarkable aspects of Wildlife Works' approach is its focus on empowering communities. Unlike conventional conservation projects that might impose restrictions on local populations, Wildlife Works ensures that indigenous and rural communities are active participants in shaping conservation solutions that also serve their long-term social and economic interests. The REDD+ Framework and Its ImpactThe REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) framework, developed by the United Nations, is a key mechanism in global conservation efforts. REDD+ projects aim to reduce carbon emissions by offering financial incentives to governments, communities, and private sector actors who take action to preserve forests.Wildlife Works has been a pioneering force in REDD+ implementation, with projects spanning Africa, South America, and Asia. Their Kenyan project, launched in 2011, was the first of its kind to be issued carbon credits under the VERRA standard. From there, Wildlife Works expanded into the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Colombia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, and more—focusing on regions with high biodiversity and intense deforestation pressures. But what does a REDD+ project look like on the ground?According to Mike, a successful REDD+ project integrates:* Community consultation and governance, ensuring that local people benefit from conservation efforts.* Biodiversity monitoring, safeguarding endangered species.* Sustainable livelihoods, such as eco-businesses, agroforestry, and handicrafts that reduce dependence on forest destruction.* Infrastructure development, including schools, healthcare facilities, and renewable energy projects.Addressing Criticism of Carbon CreditsDespite their potential, carbon credits and REDD+ projects have faced criticism. Some argue that carbon markets allow corporations to "greenwash" their emissions rather than actively reducing them. Others worry about the transparency and legitimacy of carbon credit verification.Mike acknowledges these concerns and explains how Wildlife Works ensures high-integrity projects by:* Adhering to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) principles, ensuring that indigenous communities voluntarily agree to projects.* Implementing safeguards to prevent "leakage", where deforestation might simply shift to another location.* Prioritizing permanence, making sure that conservation gains last for decades, not just a few years.* Working with independent third-party verifiers to validate carbon reductions. He also highlights that while bad actors have existed in the carbon market, the majority of REDD+ projects—especially those focused on nature-based solutions—are genuine, impactful, and community-driven.Wildlife Works' Global ImpactWith over two decades of experience, Wildlife Works has expanded its footprint across multiple continents, targeting some of the world's most at-risk forests. Their projects are currently active in:* Kenya: The birthplace of Wildlife Works' conservation model, protecting vital wildlife corridors.* Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC): Home to the second-largest tropical rainforest on Earth.* Colombia: Partnering with indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities to conserve Amazonian and coastal forests.* Indonesia & Cambodia: Addressing deforestation from palm oil plantations and illegal logging.* Brazil: Protecting the Amazon, which remains the largest and most endangered rainforest globally.* Solomon Islands: Providing sustainable alternatives to illegal timber logging. Each of these projects is tailored to the local socio-economic and ecological context, ensuring that conservation solutions are equitable and effective. The Role of Eco-Businesses in ConservationBeyond carbon credits, Wildlife Works also supports eco-business ventures that offer alternative livelihoods to local communities. This includes:* Handicrafts and sustainable fashion, where traditional artisans can sell their products to global markets.* Agroforestry and regenerative farming, ensuring that agricultural practices do not harm the surrounding ecosystems.* Renewable energy initiatives, reducing reliance on deforestation-driven fuel sources. These initiatives ensure that conservation efforts are not just about preserving trees but also about empowering people to create self-sustaining economies.Challenges and the Future of Conservation FinanceMike reflects on the major challenges faced in the conservation sector:* Instability in the carbon market, with fluctuating prices affecting long-term project planning.* Misinformation and skepticism about carbon credits, often fueled by ideological opposition to market-driven solutions.* The need for greater corporate engagement, as voluntary carbon markets remain underutilized by businesses.* Competing conservation agendas, where NGOs and activists sometimes work against each other rather than collaborating for the greater good.Despite these challenges, the urgency of deforestation and biodiversity loss means that market-based solutions must scale rapidly. Mike emphasizes that the next decade is critical in turning the tide against environmental destruction. How Individuals Can Support Wildlife WorksFor listeners wondering how they can make an impact, Mike suggests:* Purchasing carbon credits from Wildlife Works, offsetting personal emissions while supporting conservation.* Buying eco-friendly products from Wildlife Works-affiliated businesses.* Spreading awareness about the benefits of nature-based solutions and REDD+ projects.* Advocating for stronger corporate commitments to conservation finance. As we wrap up the episode, it's clear that carbon credits and conservation finance are more than just buzzwords—they are essential tools in the fight to protect our planet's most precious ecosystems. For more information, visit Wildlife Works' website and explore their various conservation and eco-business initiatives. Brandi, Dan, Steve and Mike. Mike Carpenter, The Redd Collection owner is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. His last time on the show was this episode on November 3, 2023. Dan Berger has brought a magnum of a wine that he himself made 33 years ago. It is a 1991 Cabernet from the Napa Valley. Its aging was in an old French oak barrel. It was a project for his family, when his sons were young, the youngest was 4 that year. They opened it last night and it was still really good. Mike Carpenter from the Redd Collection is back on California Wine Country. The Redd Collection is a wine retail business that is built on a stock of old, rare and collectable wines. There are some rare wines, such as an old vine Chablis, from 2020. Dan Berger says this is French style Chardonnay “to beat the band.” This drinks like a $100 bottle but sells for $45, says Mike. The Redd Collection began with a large inventory acquired from a single collector. His name was close to Redd, and the client did not want his own name on it, so the name Redd is a derivation from that. Visit Chigazola Merchants online to shop their unique selection of fine Italian wines. Mike used to work in a wine store in LA, where there was a stock that is boring and overwhelming. “150 feet of the same varietal.” He wanted wines that were unique, old and rare. Dan points out that these wines are already aged, so the wines have the mature character that you cannot get from underaged wines. Also, it is expensive to store wine properly. Dan also mentions that these wines have been carefully vetted, for origin and quality but also for how they have been kept. The first thing that goes in the fruit, when a wine has not been aged properly. The Zelma Long collection He is currently offering private collection of a famous Napa Valley winemaker named Zelma Long. There is a wide selection of wines that go back to the ‘50s and '60s. The oldest is a half bottle of 1929 wine. Zelma Long was a great collector of wine. She was a winemaker at Robert Mondavi. He wrote in his book that losing Zelma Long from his staff was his biggest regret. She became the winemaker at Simi for a long time. She became the president at Simi which made her the first woman top executive at a major winery.

In this episode of Bionic Planet, I delve into the complex and often controversial world of conservation in the Amazon, featuring Michael Greene, a figure recently spotlighted in a Washington Post article that painted him as a land grabber. However, my intention is to provide a more nuanced perspective on his story, which I believe reflects broader challenges in the fight against deforestation. Michael Greene's journey began in 2009 when he entered the tangled legal landscape of land ownership in the Amazon. His work is set against a backdrop of illegal logging, land grabbing, and the struggles of local settlers. The episode explores the threats to the Amazon, particularly in the Portel region, where illegal loggers and wealthy individuals exploit the land, often using deceptive tactics to claim vast areas. Throughout our conversation, we discuss the various actors involved in this crisis, including the legal landowners, illegal loggers, and settlers who are often caught in the middle. Michael shares insights into the "hair comb" pattern of deforestation, where roads are cut into the forest, leading to a gradual encroachment of settlers and illegal loggers alike. As we unpack Michael's project, we examine the strategies he implemented to combat deforestation and support local communities. He highlights the importance of the Cadastro Ambiental Rural (CAR), a mandatory environmental registry that helps families claim their land and protect it from illegal encroachment. Michael's initiative aimed to empower local families by helping them navigate this bureaucratic process, ultimately securing their land rights. However, the episode also addresses the backlash Michael faced from local NGOs and other organizations that accused him of being a land grabber himself. We discuss the complexities of these accusations and the challenges of working in a region where the status quo is heavily influenced by illegal logging and land grabbing. Throughout our two-hour conversation, I aim to provide a balanced view of Michael's work, acknowledging his quirks and the difficulties he has encountered while also emphasizing the positive impact he has had on local communities. This episode serves as a raw and unfiltered look at the challenges of conservation in the Amazon, offering listeners a glimpse into the intricate dynamics at play in the fight against deforestation. Join me as we explore the unfolding saga of Michael Green, a figure who embodies the complexities of conservation efforts in one of the world's most vital ecosystems. If you missed part 1 of this series, that's where we explore the supply side of these essential forest conservation carbon credits. Now, let's focus on the demand side. Why do organizations purchase ‘Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation' (REDD+) credits, and how do these transactions support global sustainability goals? As of November 2024, this subject is timely as some REDD+ programs just received the Core Carbon Principles (CCP) label, recognising high-quality carbon credits that create verifiable climate impact. Erika Schiller is joined by Bryan McCann, Senior Director of Corporate Solutions at Climate Impact X & early leader at LEAF Coalition, and Anna Stablum, ClimeCo's Director of Business Development in Asia. Learn how companies use REDD+ credits in voluntary and compliance markets, the claims associated with these purchases, and the challenges to ensure credit quality and transparency. They also discuss the role of international frameworks like Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and the Paris Agreement's Article 6 in driving demand, highlighting how these programs encourage corporate sustainability strategies while fostering global cooperation on emissions reduction. Discover how REDD+ demand drives corporate climate action and why this market is essential for mitigating climate change. This episode references recent ICVCM approvals of new REDD+ methodologies, including ART TREES v2.0, Verra VCS VM0048, and the Jurisdictional and Nested REDD+ Framework, which aim to improve the credibility of carbon credits. Unlike the markets for Treasury securities and MBS, the market for loans can be opaque and illiquid, making it difficult for financial institutions to optimize their loan portfolios and find appropriate counterparties with which to buy and sell loans. Periods of macroeconomic and interest rate volatility can also complicate the ability to accurately price loans for assets like commercial real estate. In this episode, we talk with Mitchell Redd, Senior Vice President with the Capital Assets Group at FHN Financial, about bridging the gap between buyers and sellers of loans, the current sentiment surrounding CRE, and how the loan market will change during Fed easing.

Heidi Redd is a renowned rancher, conservationist, author, and member of the National Cowgirl Museum's Hall of Fame. Sue Bellagamba serves as Canyonlands Regional Director at the Nature Conservancy, and for more than thirty years, she has worked to protect the lands and waters of southeastern Utah. Heidi and TNC have been partners since 1997 when Heidi sold her family's Utah ranch– The Dugout Ranch– to the Nature Conservancy in a historic conservation deal that protected the property from impending development. The Dugout Ranch is located at the gateway to Canyonlands National Park and sits within the boundaries of what is now Bears Ears National Monument– a fragile and arid landscape that has faced various development and environmental threats for many decades. Heidi and Sue have worked together in many capacities over the years, with one of their most notable achievements being the creation of The Canyonlands Research Center (“CRC”), which is headquartered at the Dugout Ranch. The CRC was founded in 2010, and its mission is to “promote a sustainable future on the Colorado Plateau for people and nature through research, inspiration, and demonstration of evidence-based solutions to solve some of our most pressing ecological, social, and economic issues.” Heidi is also the author of the excellent new book titled A Cowgirl's Conservation Journey: Stories from the Dugout Ranch. The book details her fascinating and adventurous life, with tales ranging from her youth (which included lots of rock climbing and skydiving), to her early years on the Dugout Ranch, all the way up to some recent behind-the-scenes stories from the designation of Bears Ears as a National Monument. If you're a fan of history, adventure, ranching, conservation, and purpose-driven people, I know you'll enjoy the book. We covered a lot in the episode, including Heidi's upbringing, her first visit to the Dugout Ranch, and when she knew that she would devote her life to stewarding the Dugout's spectacular landscapes. Sue provides some excellent context around conservation in the American Southwest, and why drylands are such a critical ecosystem and focus of TNC's efforts. We discuss how TNC initially built trust with Heidi back in the 1990s, the creation of The Canyonlands Research Center, new insights Heidi gleaned from writing her book, and much more. Be sure to visit the episode notes for links to everything we discuss, including Heidi's book. A huge thanks to Heidi and Sue for taking the time to chat with me and share their wisdom from so many decades of conversation work in such a special part of the country.
