Man nereikėjo niekada būti tik vienokiai savo versijai. Send us a textWhat makes a composer tick? In this absorbing conversation with Dylan Glatthorn, we explore the unexpected creative influences that have shaped his musical identity. From a shy child with a toy piano to an accomplished composer for theater, film, and television, Dylan's journey reveals how early artistic experiences can profoundly shape a creative career.Dylan takes us back to his childhood in Tampa Bay, where The Beatles served as the "connecting glue" between his parents' different musical tastes – especially meaningful after their divorce. This early exposure to melodic innovation established his appreciation for music that balances emotional vulnerability with technical precision, a hallmark of his own compositional approach. The conversation delves into the nuanced storytelling of Sondheim's "Assassins," which captivated Dylan with its ability to navigate morally complex territory while balancing serious themes with sharp comedy. Similarly, Laura Marling's album "Once I Was an Eagle" demonstrates the power of music that is "both tender and subtle but also big and heartbreakingly forward" – a quality Dylan strives for in his own work. When discussing Spielberg's "Jurassic Park," Dylan analyzes how John Williams' score enhances the story without overpowering it, while Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" showcases Johnny Greenwood's experimental approach to film music. These contrasting influences reflect Dylan's versatility as a composer who can move between traditional melodic structures and more innovative techniques.Throughout our conversation, Dylan articulates a creative philosophy centered on authenticity: "Keep writing what you like, not what you think other people will like." This principle guides his current project "The Pelican," a musical about a coastal Florida town facing complete destruction from an approaching hurricane. Whether you're a fellow creator or simply curious about the artistic process, this episode offers valuable insights into how diverse influences coalesce into a unique creative voice.Check Out Dylan's WorkFollow My Pop Five: @mypopfive on all platforms We'll see you next time. Grammy and Mercury Nominated and Brit award-winning songwriter Laura Marling has mapped out new musical territories, including chamber pop and electronics. Her latest record, Patterns in Repeat was written following the birth of her daughter in 2023 and contains lovely songs crafted with propulsive riffs in motion, augmented by string arrangements. The album itself is an intimate affair, recorded at home, often with Marling's daughter in the room, and the songs look at how generations interact with each other, passing on old memories and making new ones. There are protective vows to a child, as well as reflections on “a transition between one way of being to another”. Laura Marling plays some of these new songs, solo, in-studio. Set list: 1. Patterns 2. Caroline 3. No One's Gonna Love You Like I Can

Auch ein "Sailor", also ein Seemann, bekommt ein eigenes Lied, ebenso wie "Snow" ja im Grunde ebenfalls Wasser ist, wenn auch in einem anderen Aggregatzustand. Steven and Ian open this week's episode with some Halloween discourse, which unexpectedly dips into some Kindergarten Cop discourse (1:43). Then they turn to the Fantasy Albums Draft (11:23), which includes two new releases on Steven's team, Soccer Mommy's Evergreen (15:45) and Laura Marling's Patterns In Repeat. They also talk about the careers of both artists, and the state of 2010s era singer-songwriters in the mid-2020s. They also discuss the upcoming Tyler The Creator record, which drops on Monday, and the benefits of putting out music during the week rather than right before the weekend (24:01). From there, they talk about the recent Bon Iver EP Sable, which is the most straightforward music he's ever made, and his influence on contemporary artists (32:58).In the mailbag, they address a listener question about cover songs. How many is too many? Does Vampire Weekend tip into "too many territory" on their current tour (42:22)?In Recommendation Corner, Ian stumps for electronic artist Kelly Lee Owens and Steven talks up the Nashville trio Styrofoam Winos (48:52).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Seven years ago Laura Marling came on episode 19 of the podcast at a very different time in her life. As she prepares to release her 8th album, Patterns in Repeat, this month (25 Oct), she does so as a new mother, who's trained to become a yoga teacher, who's gained a masters in psychoanalysis, who's formed a band called LUMP, who's quite touring, who's communicating directly with fans via a quite brilliant Substack newsletter about the craft of songwriting. All of the above is covered in this week's episode of Midnight Chats, as well as discussion about death, T.V., secretly cooking for Damon Albarn and John Paul Jones with not great results, and the beauty of a new, sparse album recorded with a baby daughter literally by your side in your living room. This week, Dana and Stephen are joined by Supreme Friend of the Pod, Isaac Butler, who co-hosts Slate's Working podcast and is the author of The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act (which is now available in paperback!). The panel begins by pondering Dream Scenario, a provocative new film from Norwegian writer-director Kristoffer Borgli. The nightmarish social satire stars Nicolas Cage as Paul Matthews, a hapless middle-aged biology professor who begins appearing randomly in people's dreams in a tale about anonymity and the cycle of virality. Then, the three speak with the brilliant author and classicist Emily Wilson about her recent translation of Homer's the Iliad, and her unique approach to metered verse and how she came to access the interior lives of Hector, Patroclus, Achilles, and more. Finally, the trio discusses Coyote vs. Acme, a completed film based on Ian Frazier's 1990 comic in The New Yorker, that was shelved last week by Warner Bros. (reportedly in favor of a $30 million tax write-off) then un-shelved when the studio received backlash for being “anti-art.”   In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel descends into a different kind of nightmare: The Beatles' music video for “Now and Then.” Has director Peter Jackson created a touching CGI tribute to the legendary band? Or has he engineered something truly evil? Email us at culturefest@slate.com.  Endorsements: Dana: The Public Domain Review, an online journal and not-for-profit project dedicated to “the exploration of curious and compelling works from the history of art, literature, and ideas.” She's only just begun to scratch the site's surface, but recommends starting with “W.E.B.
