“Rev. Dr. William F. Schulz, human rights activist and President-CEO of the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Service Committee, writes of our humanistic beliefs: "We believe that human beings are responsible for the future; that history is in our hands, not those of an angry God or inexorable fate." "We believe that life's blessings are available to everyone, not just those who can recite a certain catechism," "And we believe that those blessings are made manifest to us not just in the "miraculous" or extraordinary but in the simple pleasures of the everyday." “I am pro-evidence, pro-data, pro-studying, pro-research, pro-logic, pro-critical thinking, pro-knowledge, pro-thinking for self, pro-reading, pro-writing, pro-testing of beliefs, and pro-scientific experiments. I am a figuratist and not a literalist when it comes to all religions. I am not a traditionalist and I am unconventional. I am free-living, free-thinking, free-loving, and free-spirited. I don't attend houses of worship.” Antonio Myers --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

On this Easter Sunday, we'll tell the age old story of new life entering into impossible places. So often, and understandably, Easter is synonymous with spring and further meaning gets lost in the bunnies and candy grass. This Sunday, we'll wonder what the story means when we don't equate it with springtime. New life and new possibilities, after all, are not limited by season. CORRECTION: The Ukrainian Orthodox Church celebrates Orthodox Easter, which is Sunday, April 24th. This is a week after we celebrate Easter. Resources: What Torture's Taught Me by Rev. William F. Expanding the Rights Rubric: Adding Rights and Rights Holders for a Good SocietyDiscussion with Sushma Raman on The Coming Good Society: Why New Realities Demand New Rights, her book with William F. Schulz. We discuss the need for specific rights to redress the needs of LGBTQIA+ communities and why adding new rights reinforces rather than dilutes traditional human rights. We also discuss the risks posed to our rights by technological advancement, including algorithmic decision-making and CRISPR and how to address these from a rights perspective. Additionally, we discuss the need to view corruption as a human rights violation per se. We also discuss the need to ascribe rights to non-humans, including the environment, AI and a tiered approach to animal rights. For More Info:https://www.openglobalrights.org/the-coming-good-society-why-new-realities-demand-new-rights/https://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674977082Twitter: @sushmaramanhttps://harvardpress.typepad.com/hup_publicity/2020/09/qa-with-william-f-schulz-and-sushma-raman-authors-of-the-coming-good-society.html

From the 19th century onward, Buddhism played a significant role in the development of some parts of Unitarianism. Indeed, we played a small role in bringing that faith to North America. Readings Opening words, William F. Schulz, “Come into this place of peace...” Thilini Ariyachandra, “An Invocation of Metta/Compassion”, https://www.xavier.edu/jesuitresource/online-resources/prayer-index/buddhist-prayers The Unitarian Church of Edmonton is a liberal, multi-generational, religious community. We celebrate a rich mosaic of free-thinking, spiritually-questing individuals joined in common support and action. We welcome diversity including diversity of beliefs from divine believers to humanists, from pagans to atheists and agnostics. We believe in the compassion of the human heart, the warmth of community, the pursuit of justice and the search of meaning in our lives. We gather with gratitude on traditional Cree lands that are now a part of Treaty Six and shared by many nations. A treaty is an inheritance, a responsibility and a relationship. May we be good neighbours to one another, good stewards to our planet and good ancestors to our children.
