Ellen Adair and Eric Gilde discuss the 2001 movie "Hardball." They introduce the film (1:34), with an overview of the story, the cast, and filmmakers, and review the 20-80 baseball scouting grades for rating the film, with a new metaphor (8:14). In Amount of Baseball (17:50), the scouts initially disagree, but slightly convince each other. Ellen has two potential player comps. Baseball Accuracy (25:26) compares this Little League play to other films, with just a couple of editorial / geographical issues. Ellen defends Frank Thomas's honor and digs in on Sammy Sosa's consecutive homers, and records by Ken Griffey Jr, Don Mattingly, and Kevin Mench. That is not Wrigley. Those are not NBA games. Luis Garcia's dance step is considered. Storytelling (39:23) is a real challenge, when the entire inveterate gambler storyline does not work. Plus, white savior problems, a very confusing moral, and a complete lack of necessary exposition. There are so many unanswered questions. How does he earn their trust? Why does G-Baby have to die? Eulogy issues, uniform issues. At long last, the Score Tool (1:24:13) is only a partial respite, with some small problems of its own. They consider some of the soundtrack songs, including "Ghetto," "Hardball," "Big Poppa," "Where the Party At," and R. Kelly. Acting (1:30:21) considers the ceiling and floor of a slightly mis-cast Keanu Reeves. Diane Lane was trying, John Hawkes had an impossible task, D.B. Sweeney deserves better. Young actors Michael B. Jordan, Bryan Hearne, Julian Griffith, and DeWayne Warren almost save the movie. Neither Delightfulness of Catcher (1:39:26) or Delightfulness of Announcer (1:40:27) offer much. In Lack of Misogyny (1:41:00), they discuss the insipidity of the lame romantic subplot. No spoilers on the following segments: Yes or No (1:45:06), Six Degrees of Baseball (1:48:56), Favorite Moment (1:50:43) Least Favorite Moment (1:53:00), Scene We Would Have Liked to See (1:54:54), Dreamiest Player (1:56:50), Favorite Performance (1:57:09), and Next Time (2:00:32). Todd breaks down day 23 of what he calls the Schumer shutdown and makes the case for suspending the Senate filibuster to reopen the government and end the political theater. He hits the alarm on a soaring $38 trillion federal debt, explains why a “clean CR” became a flashpoint, and argues Democrats are leveraging maximum pain for political gain. Todd then turns to the map wars—why mid-cycle redistricting in states like Indiana could reshape the House and why Republicans, in his view, should play hardball within legal bounds. Plus: a quick Pacers opening-night aside and why leadership means doing the hard things, not staging stunts. Conservative. Not bitter. As always.

Clean energy founders love to talk about technology, capital, and scale. But few are prepared for the fourth pillar of success: government. Shomik Dutta, a co-founder and managing partner at Overture VC, learned that lesson firsthand after a career that spanned Obama's White House, private equity, and venture capital. His takeaway: “If you're not at the table, you're on the menu.” Shomik thinks the next generation of climate startups must treat policy as a core competency, not an afterthought. That means building real influence in Washington, developing a muscle for storytelling, and sometimes even instilling a little fear in politicians. It's a strategy Overture has baked into its investment model. The firm partners directly with Boundary Stone Partners, one of DC's top government affairs shops, to help portfolio companies navigate regulation and shape outcomes. In this episode, Lara Pierpoint talks with Shomik about how industrial policy is reshaping venture capital, why crypto offers an unexpected lobbying lesson, and how founders can engage the government as a strategic partner— even in this moment of political backlash. John Oakley tackles two storylines shaping Canada right now. First, Jocelyn Bamford—VP at Automatic Coating and founder of the Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers and Businesses of Canada—breaks down how U.S. tariffs and Ottawa/Queen's Park responses could hit Canadian manufacturing, from autos to steel, and what policy levers (energy costs, red tape, pipelines) might actually keep high-skill jobs here. Then Tristin Hopper, National Post columnist and author of “Don't Be Canada,” explains the latest polling: Mark Carney's fading honeymoon, a Conservative upswing, seniors consolidating as the Liberal base, a disappearing gender gap, and the NDP's ongoing slump. What we cover: How prospective U.S. tariffs could ripple through Windsor, Oshawa, Guelph, Brampton & beyond Auto sector realities under USMCA vs. headline panic—and whether political theatre helps or hurts Ontario's “hardball” signals (LCBO booze, critical minerals, energy) and investor confidence The cost stack for manufacturers: electricity, compliance, and “death by a thousand cuts” Poll shifts since the election: approval slides, vote-intent realignments, and where swing voters went Guests: Jocelyn Bamford (VP, Automatic Coating; Founder, Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers and Businesses of Canada); Tristin Hopper (Columnist, National Post; Author, “Don't Be Canada”). Girls Who Play Hardball: Building Baseball's Future Girls Who Play Hardball: Building Baseball's Future takes center stage in this inspiring all-girls episode of The SLIDE Podcast. Host Lilah “Brickwall” Br4tcher and co-host Ashlynn Jolicouer welcome standout ballplayers Youki Aoshima and Rio Alcantar. Together, they share what it truly means to play baseball as young women chasing big dreams. Breaking barriers in baseball The conversation focuses on the excitement surrounding the Women's Professional Baseball League (WPBL), a groundbreaking step that opens doors for female athletes. Rio recalls, “Finally, women are gonna get a chance to play… in a higher level and get paid to do it — that's like icing on top of the cake.” Their stories reveal both the struggles and motivation that come with being girls who choose hardball over the traditional softball route. BFA tournaments and friendships Youki and Rio reflect on their journeys through Baseball For All tournaments. They found not only fierce competition but also lifelong friendships. Both describe how different mixed-gender tournaments feel compared to all-girls events. Additionally, they explain how inclusive atmospheres enable them to thrive. Lilah and Ashlynn add their own experiences, making this episode a roundtable of athletes who understand the grind and the joy of playing ball together. Fun, rivalry, and growth The girls swap stories about rivalry games between the Bay Sox and the Waves, hilarious hecklers, and Banana Ball antics. They even imagine their own professional team names, mascots, and dream cities. The discussion balances laughter with serious talk about confidence, pressure, and the importance of creating opportunities that match their passion for the sport. Building the future of the game The episode closes with advice to the next generation. Their message is simple: start young, work hard, and keep the fun alive. Youki explains how starting at six gave her a foundation to handle challenges later. Meanwhile, Rio stresses that making friends is just as important as building skills. With the WPBL on the horizon and organizations like Baseball For All leading the charge, the dream of girls playing baseball at every level is closer than ever.
