Supporting people and communities through complex relationship dynamics is something ministers do all the time as part of the job. What is not always so expected is how to navigate complex relationship dynamics when the minister is part of the complex relationship. The Ministry of Good Offices at the UUMA is a team of colleagues who support peers in just this way.Today's guest is the Reverend Melissa Carvill Ziemer, part of the Executive Team and Director of Ministries and Programs of the UU Ministers Association.___________________________Thank you for listening. Dr. Elías Ortega, president of Meadville Lombard Theological School, is with us for this sermon. Through struggles rooted in faith and in the conviction that no one's labor is invisible or expendable, farmworkers, immigrants, and other vulnerable communities have defended their worth and dignity while sustaining the life of this nation. Grounded in spirituality and the deep ethics of community care, their movements for justice reveal how nonviolence, organizing, and prophetic leadership can inspire and sustain solidarity in the face of exploitation. This Sunday, we will honor these communities as faithful ancestors and living partners in the work of justice, and we will ask: What does their courage and resilience ask of Unitarian Universalists in Houston—and across the United States—today? Recorded on March 29, 2026.
Rev. Nathan Ryan, lead Minister at the Baton Rouge congregation, will delve into our legacy of Unitarianism, and how we honor “The Transient and the Permanent.” Reverend Nathan is a life-long Unitarian Universalist from south Louisiana. He graduated from Meadville-Lombard Theological School in Chicago. After serving in various positions at UU churches in Texas and Maryland, he returned to Baton Rouge as Assistant Minister in 2012. He was called as their Senior Minister in 2020. Music: Chalice Choir, under the direction of Susan Peck.
The Reverend Kevin Jagoe, minister to BuxMont Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, shares his journey from small-town Minnesota to Unitarian Universalist ministry, weaving together life as a gay man, humanism, and a call to serve. He reflects on religion, purpose, and - in a changing spiritual landscape - what it means to lead with love. The Reverend Kevin W. Jagoe was born and raised in small-town Minnesota. He lived in Brooklyn, NY before being called as minister by BuxMont Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in 2018 and now lives outside of Philadelphia. He completed his Master of Divinity at Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago and is currently working on his Doctorate of Divinity at United Lutheran Seminary. Prior to seminary, he completed a BA in anthropology, criminal justice, and forensic sciences with minors in psychology and biology as well as a Master of Arts in Nonprofit Management. Beyond congregational life, Jagoe is Adjunct Faculty with the Humanist Studies Program of the American Humanist Association and has worked professionally within the Humanist movement since 2013.
Sermons from First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Arlington Massachusetts
Ebonié Smith-Cooper, Meadville Lombard Seminarian, preaching Worship service given March 30, 2025 Prayer by Loren Gomez, Worship Associate https://firstparish.info/ First Parish A liberal religious community, welcoming to all First gathered 1739 According to Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, Love is the call [in] our lives. Ebonié Smith-Cooper, Meadville Lombard Seminarian and First Parish member, asks how can we pursue love for one another in times of distress? Ebonié Smith-Cooper (she/they) is an aspiring minister who is currently attending Meadville Lombard Theological School. In Ebonie's free time she enjoys coaching in-town sports, listening to podcasts, and playing card games with their family. For March 2025, the Giving First recipient is the Resilient Sisterhood Project. Cambridge-based Resilient Sisterhood Project's mission is to educate and empower women of African descent regarding common, yet rarely discussed, diseases of the reproductive system that disproportionately affect them. They approach these diseases and associated issues through a cultural and social justice lens since they understand that poor knowledge of reproductive health is primarily related to health, racial, and socioeconomic disparities. RSP brings an expansive definition to and understanding of the word “women” to include transgender women, cisgender women, gender queer, and gender non-conforming people who have a female reproductive system. The remaining half of your offering supports the life and work of this Parish. To donate using your smartphone, you may text “fpuu” to 73256. Then follow the directions in the texts you receive. About our Lead Minister: Rev. Marta Flanagan began her ministry as our twentieth called minister at First Parish in the fall of 2009. She is a genuine and forthright preacher. In conversation she is direct and engaging. She speaks of prayer with as much ease as she laughs at human foibles. We call her “Marta.” Marta is a religious liberal, a theist, a feminist, and a lover of the woods. As a student of American history at Smith College she was captivated by the stories of social reformers who were motivated and sustained by their faith. That led her to consider the ministry and to study at Harvard Divinity School from where she was graduated in 1986. She was the first woman minister in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, serving at the First Universalist Church there (1987-1997). She served in a co-ministry at South Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, (1997-2005) from where she is minister emerita. Marta served as interim minister in Montpelier, Vermont (2008-2009). She is trained as a spiritual director. For three years she lived in the Vermont woods practicing voluntary simplicity and the spiritual life. Marta enjoys the vitality of First Parish and our strong sense of community. She celebrates the yearning for depth and the desire to make a difference in the world that she finds here.

Elías Ortega is President and Professor of Religion, Ethics, and Leadership at Meadville Lombard Theological School. What would it take for theological education to become an agent of social impact? How could theological education help us learn to be better human beings? What would it mean for theological education to teach students to meet the challenges of their communities of origin? What if the scholarly contribution was synthesizing theory for the creation of the good community in regions across the country and around the world?
The “mildly talented” (100% his term, not ours) actor, Nick D'Agosto tweeted enthusiastically about The Life You Can Save, and when the team saw the tweet, they jumped on it! They reached out and connected Nick and Charlie, and a friendship was formed. Nick invited Charlie to appear on his (Nick's) podcast, “God & Other Delicacies,” and now Charlie is returning the favor. If Nick sounds familiar, it's because his voice graces the beginning and end of each of Charlie's episodes (and some movies and TV shows, as well). Born and raised in a middle- to upper-middle-class, largely white, neighborhood in Nebraska, Nick made the effort to have a broader world view, including studying poverty and race issues in the Dominican Republic for a semester when he was a student at Marquette University. As of this recording, Nick is back in grad school, pursuing an advanced degree in Divinity at Meadville Lombard Theological School, a Unitarian Universalist seminary. In this episode, Nick and Charlie talk about how ending poverty is a value they share, how ending poverty is a central tenet to Christianity and ethical atheism alike, what influences shape us as we go through life, and why it's so easy to fall short of our professed values. Nick is a member at Antaeus Theatre Company in Los Angeles, volunteers at his UU church in Pasadena, and supports the charity "The Life You Can Save." He lives in Los Angeles, CA with his wife and young son. You can find out more about Nick on IMDb: Nicholas D'Agosto - IMDb. The call to ministry outside of a conventional congregational setting is growing. Chaplaincy within the military is among the vocations that is attracting the attention of seminarians as well as seasoned clergy. Season 3 begins with a series of podcasts on military chaplaincy. In this episode, I have the honor of speaking with Rev. Dr. Sarah Lammert, Ministry and Faith Development co-director and Ecclesiastical Endorser at the Unitarian Universalist Association. What is an ecclesiastical endorsement? Many professional work and volunteer environments require endorsement from a denomination or faith group affirming that a member is in good standing and qualified for that ministry. Chaplains who work in federal systems: military, veteran's administration, and federal prisons all require ecclesiastical endorsement. Rev. Lammert brings great information on chaplaincy not only in the military but also at the Veteran's Administration (VA), the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and auxiliary military chaplaincy with the Civil Air Patrol and Coast Guard Auxiliary. We cover so much in this interview that I hardly know how to introduce it! We talk about Samara's journey to Ministry as a non-theist Unitarian, how to be an individual in community, her struggles with autoimmune and mental health issues, how to reconcile chaos and disorder, the links between poetry and math, her possible ADHD (seeking diagnosis), and more. Here is Samara in her own words:Samara Powers is a self-described generalist and aficionado of Dad Jokes, and user of she and they pronouns. Her life experience ranges from theatrical training to hospitality to singing to a career in marketing and design and more. She is a single mom of two and a first-year seminary student at Meadville Lombard Theological School. Earlier this year she started a Wiggle Fitness intuitive motion and mindfulness channel as a brave space for those seeking to improve their relationship to movement and who don't mind a little goofiness and deep thought along the way. She is a non-binary, trans-positive, queer-positive relationship anarchist, a Best of the Net- and Pushcart-nominated poet, a writer, speaker, activist, anti-racist co-conspirator, priestess, jester, non-theist, embracer of learning, and seeker of the next better question. In this conversation, Jen reflects on awaking to her call to ministry during her first visit to UUCC, shares her process for writing sermons, and discusses the hardest parts of the road to ministry and of being human.
