When it comes to dedication, few people can compare to Brian J. Heaton, who has assembled arguably the most complete touring history of any recording artist with his new book: Roads to Madness: A Touring History of Queensrÿche (1981-1997). If you're a fan of Queensrÿche, or just a lover of classic progressive rock and metal, this is a story you'll be interested in hearing.Buy the Book: https://roadstomadness.comFacebook: BleedingEdgeShow Instagram/Threads: @bleeding_edge_show X/Twitter/Whatever: @Bleeding___Edge Live365: The Expanse - https://live365.com/station/The-Expanse-a09675 Bleeding Edge Theme: Paul Zotter - https://youtube.com/channel/UCrp4NSgpc3oKGRdYcAQZCkA?si=AmiXIYn8sOToQr9g
Author Brian J. Morra discusses the first two books in his new series: The Able Archers and The Righteous Arrows. The series is a work of historical fiction based on certain real-life events during the late Cold War period of the 1980's. The protagonist, CIA officer Kevin Cattani, is inspired by Brian's own experiences as a U.S. intelligence officer during that period, and Cattani's Soviet counterpart, Ivan Levchenko, is a composite of various KGB and GRU officers who Brian knew in the 80's. Written as a thriller, the series navigates one of the most dangerous periods in human history.
Brian Cavanaugh joins Mike to discuss the security risks at the southern border and the issues at the Pennsylvania Trump Rally.
Continuing down the "I ain't reading all of that" interview series with a very special guest bound to be a cult household classic Dan Spencer is a musician and songwriter who released my favorite album of the year Return To Your Dark Master. He's also a longtime Contain listener (to my surprise) and a very knowledgable and thoughtful guy who went from Mortuary school to playing the CMA country fest and Bonnaroo. We talk Nouveau Roman literature, Peter Greenaway, and slipping obscure interests into songwriting sessions with Post Malone and Brad Paisley. Other topics: the hidden Universalist sects of the Appalachias known as the ‘No-Hellers', how the modern music industry works, vampires, being around death in the Mortuary, the promise of Utopia and communities forming around it, Brian J.L Berry, listening to the Sun City Girls on acid in the sun, blood covenants, Our Lady of the Flowers by Jean Genet, Djent Country Music hybridization factor, keys to lyrics, quitting drinking, primitive Baptists, Dickey Betts (RIP + SKYDOG), a brief history of Cookeville, Tennessee, and much more Listen to Return To Your Dark Master and see Dan on tour

Brian has spent his career in intelligence and national security beginning with his time as a decorated Air Force Intelligence officer and through his many years as a senior executive in the aerospace and defense industry. Brian was encouraged to write the story of The Able Archers by many friends who convinced him that his unique, personal insight could bring the story to life of how humanity narrowly avoided extinction in the fall of 1983. His writing is based on first-hand experience and the stories of the many intriguing people he's encountered over the years. Brian grew up in Virginia and is married to Tracy, who is an outstanding story editor. They split their time between homes in Virginia and Florida. When Brian isn't writing, he is a corporate board member, enjoys cycling, playing guitar and piano, and visiting with his two grandchildren. Make sure to connect with Brian J. The second book in the Able Archers series takes place in war-torn Afghanistan in the 1980s and once again follows characters Kevin Cattani and Ivan Levchenko. The Buddies got to ask questions about Brian's writing style, the ripple effects of the conflicts discussed in the book, his thoughts on the OSI, and they even got a sneak peak of the upcoming books. Are we living in the most dangerous year in history? Or was that 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis? According to former Air Force Intelligence Officer Brian J. Morra, the answer is neither -- rather, it was 1983. Brian makes this case, outlining how the United States and the Soviet Union narrowly avoided nuclear catastrophe, after months of tensions, tough rhetoric, and a tragic shoot-down of a Korean civilian airliner. Burn Bag host A'ndre chats with Brian about these events, dramatized in his new book, The Able Archers, based on Brian's own experiences working on intelligence issues during this time period. Brian shares why the Soviets believed that the United States was willing to launch a first strike under the Presidency of Ronald Reagan, whose tough rhetoric against the Kremlin led to heightened paranoia in the mind of dying Soviet Leader Yuri Andropov. This paranoia came to a head in September, when a lone Soviet officer prevented a nuclear war scare after a series of false alarms, and in November, when a NATO exercise caused the Soviets to bolster their nuclear posturing in fears that the United States was actually about to launch a first strike. Many of these events came to light decades after 1983, but Brian shares these stories and more in this fascinating episode. You can purchase Brian's book,The Able Archers, here.

Col Brian J. Slaughter discusses his command philosophy.
When we think of the early church, some of us might imagine groups of illiterate believers guided by one or two trained readers or teachers. In fact, the historical reality was very different. Brian J. Wright describes an ancient world obsessed with reading—especially public, communal reading of significant texts, including lots of questioning and dialogue. In this episode, Dru Johnson and Brian Wright examine literacy levels in the Roman Empire, the early church's engagement with Paul's letters, and historical evidence about reading in the first and second centuries. They also discuss the modern church's Bible engagement, and how we can take a more dialogical and active approach to reading Scripture. Brian J. Wright is an associate pastor at Denia Community Church, an adjunct professor, and author of Communal Reading in the Time of Jesus: A Window into Early Christian Reading Practices. He studies communal reading in the scholarly context, challenging long-held views about literary culture, and also encourages contemporary communal reading practices. Thomas Sankara: A Revolutionary in Cold War Africa (Indiana University Press, 2021) by Brian J. Peterson is a thoroughly researched biography of Thomas Sankara, the revolutionary leader of Burkina Faso. Peterson sketches Sankara's rise to power in the early 1980s and focuses specifically on how his military experiences, educational background, and community of mentors, family, and friends shaped his radicalism. Peterson frames Sankara within a second-generation of anti-colonial radicals who both admired anti-colonial luminaries like Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere, but also refined their anti-colonial perspective to critique the limits of their leadership. We learn that during this moment of late-Cold War and decolonization, Sankara used his international platforms to resist and condemn neo-colonialism, imperialism, and European-American networks of surveillance and subterfuge while tackling corruption, poverty, gender discrimination, and environmental issues in Burkina Faso. Sankara's fierce commitment to revolutionary politics intimated the U.S. and French governments, Western-aligned African nations, and Burkinabé officials who ultimately conspired to assassinate him in 1987. Peterson's Thomas Sankara examines the powerful legacies of an incredible revolutionary figure and offers a foundation for understanding contemporary anti-imperialist politics in Burkina Faso and beyond.
