In this special Legacy Episode of The Coaching Podcast, Coach EM honours the life and work of Jim Loehr — world-renowned performance psychologist, bestselling author, and co-founder of the Human Performance Institute. Dr. Loehr sadly passed away on April 20, 2026, at the age of 83, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that shaped athletes, coaches, leaders, and performers across the globe. From coaching 17 world number one athletes to transforming the way we think about energy, character, purpose, and performance, Jim's work went far beyond winning. As he famously said, “It's not about making a living, it's about making a life.” About Dr Jim Loehr Dr. Jim Loehr was one of the world's leading performance psychologists and the co-founder of the Human Performance Institute (HPI), the pioneering organization behind the science of energy management and sustained high performance. Over a career spanning more than three decades, his groundbreaking work influenced elite performers across sport, business, medicine, and law enforcement. Jim worked with 17 world number one athletes across sports including tennis, golf, basketball, football, hockey, boxing, motor racing, and the Olympics, while also advising Fortune 500 companies, FBI Hostage Rescue Teams, and military Special Forces. A New York Times bestselling author of 17 books, including The Power of Full Engagement and Leading with Character, Jim believed that true performance was built from the inside out. His work focused not only on mental toughness, but on emotional strength, purpose, character, and energy management. Featured in publications including Harvard Business Review, Fortune, Time, Newsweek, and on programs such as Oprah, Today, and Nightline, Jim's legacy continues to shape coaches, leaders, athletes, and high performers around the world. Coach EM's Favorite 20 One-Liners from Dr. Jim Loehr “It's not about making a living. It's about making a life.” “You don't play tennis to be a great tennis player. You play tennis to grow up.” “Having a deep sense of purpose is one of the most powerful things you will have as a human being.” “Life is short. You have only so much energy to give.” “The more you repurpose what you're doing for something bigger than yourself, something magical happens.” “You can't be empty. You have to give a lot to get much back.” “Everything you do has a consequence.” “The best voice you can listen to is your own voice.” “Preparation, preparation, preparation.” “There's no cheap way to the top.” “The more prepared you are, the more confidence rises.” “The mind follows your eyes.” “Movement creates chemistry.” “A competitor's mind doesn't roll out by itself.” “Teach your kids to love what they do and have fun with what they do.” “You play best when you feel open, free, relaxed, and calm.” “The goal is not dependency. The goal is ownership.” “My goal is to get you out of my life as quickly as possible.” “I want you to become a better coach for yourself.” “As a coach, you are in the influence business.” Pure gold for leadership coaching — especially the ownership-before-accountability philosophy that shaped so much of Coach EM's work. Welcome to Our Agile Tales as we start off this new season with Rich Sheridan, founder, CEO and chief story teller at Menlo Innovations.Aside from founding and leading Menlo Innovations, Rich is also the author of the bests-selling books, Joy Inc. and Chief Joy Officer, whose message is that joy is essential to productivity and profitability in the workplace. Rich recounts his journey from early programming success and a rapid rise to VP to feeling despondent amid chaotic, late, over-budget software delivery, which sparked a search for better ways to organize people. He defines workplace joy as externally focused delight in serving end users, distinct from perks or simple happiness. He describes an “aha” moment when his eight-year-old daughter observed that no one could make decisions without him, revealing a hero-based organization, and a “click” moment in 1999 influenced by Kent Beck's Extreme Programming Explained, IDEO's Nightline segment, and meeting his co-founder, James Goebel.Rich details early resistance to pair programming, how experiments and a “Java factory” open-room approach shifted behavior, and how the internet bubble burst led him to found Menlo Innovations in 2001. He explains how IBM tours and a conference invitation launched his storytelling and how Edison's Menlo lab inspired Menlo's name, concluding that the risk of change was less than the risk of staying the same.Key topics and timestamps:00:00 Welcome to Our Agile Tales00:22 Meet Rich Sheridan02:30 From Programmer to Burnout05:53 Defining Joy at Work08:21 Aha Moment Leadership Shift10:36 Click Moment XP and IDEO12:53 Pairing Experiment Begins15:54 Java Factory Culture Change19:19 Menlo Innovations Is Born20:59 Joyful Workdays No Overtime22:38 Tour Guide to Storyteller28:04 Risk of Change vs Staying30:05 ClosingAbout Rich SheridanRich Sheridan is the CEO and Chief Storyteller at Menlo Innovations and the best-selling author of Joy Inc. and Chief Joy Officer. My guest for this episode of Necronomicast is best selling author/journalist Bob Reiss!  His work has always been inspired by the border between order and anarchy, the moment when peace becomes chaos, order becomes danger and events once considered impossible suddenly turn real. His journalism has brought him to research and military bases in the Arctic and Antarctica, where he's covered climate change and potential conflict in polar regions, to Sudan, Somalia and South Africa, where he wrote about drought, rebellion and civil unrest, and to the Amazon rainforest where his dispatches about murder and environmental destruction made him a national magazine award finalist. Bob has advised European politicians on US Arctic policy. He's moderated National Academy of Sciences meetings on disease outbreaks in polar regions. He's accompanied Coast Guard missions on a polar icebreaker and against drug runners off Central America.   Bob's fiction has been called "sparkling and fast paced." (Washington Post) "Dead On!" (People Magazine) "First Rate!" (Rocky Mountain News) "Gripping...Riveting" (Publishers Weekly. "Splendid. Great writing. Great suspense. Great action." (Los Angeles Times). He's appeared on TV shows including Morning Joe, Nightwatch, Nightline, CNN, Dan Rather Reports, Charlie Rose, Good Morning America and Al Jazeera, discussing his work. Bob's 18 novels reflect the same fascination with order versus anarchy and he is an incredible addition to the growing list of fascinating guests on NECRONOMICAST! I am not a therapist. I do not treat the psychosocial aspects of sexual difficulties or address the mind-body connection. And that is why the work I do depends on experts like  my guest today, Dr. Lori BrottoDr. Lori Brotto is a registered psychologist, researcher, and global leader in women's sexual health. A Professor at the University of British Columbia and Distinguished University Scholar, she has spent more than two decades developing and validating evidence-based treatments for women's sexual concerns and is widely recognized for pioneering the use of mindfulness in sexual health. She co-developed eSense to translate this body of research into accessible, evidence-based care beyond traditional clinical settings.  Dr. Brotto has authored more than 280 scientific publications and is also the author of Better Sex Through Mindfulness and its companion workbook.  In this episode: Why a sex therapist and medical clinician need to collaborate How mindfulness helps arousal and libido once there is no pain with sexual activity How well mindfulness works to increase libido The difference between mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy Why women avoid sex (besides pain)  The circular sexual response cycle If most sex therapists are aware of the impact of menopause symptoms The role of systemic testosterone and libido The eSense Health tool for individualized digital access to CBT and mindfulness Why Dr. Brotto developed eSense Health What eSense is How eSense works and how well it works Who eSense is for How this tool helps women  Living with a cancer diagnosis PTSD History of trauma History of sexual abuse With different cultural and religious backgrounds What to expect during an eSense session The cost of eSense Linked In https://www.linkedin.com/in/lori-brotto-9974a236/ Instagram @drloribrotto Information about eSense HEALTHeSense Health is a digital health company focused on closing the care gap in women's sexual health. “He wouldn't take no for an answer” - On Valentine's Day, 2020, cops respond to a 1 a.m. call in the Hollywood Hills, where they discover 38-year-old family therapist Amie Harwick fighting for her life, and her roommate Michael Herman, with blood on his hands. Michael is brought in for questioning but swears had nothing to do with it, and that the perpetrator must have fled into the night. What cops don't know is that the man they have in custody is telling the truth, and that the real attacker is still out there. But, Amie's best friend, Robert Coshland, is on the case: he's determined to take down the man who's been stalking Amie for years, & finally get justice.  - For more information about Justice 4 Amie, please see here: https://www.change.org/p/adam-b-schiff-justice-4-amie-domestic-violence-laws-updated  - Credits:Directed, written & edited by Matthew Rice Researched by Tiffany Loxton Co-written by Kat Gardilcic & Tiffany Loxton Voiceover by William Akana Produced by Salim Sader “The Final Hours of Amie Harwick.” 48 Hours: CBS Broadcasting Inc., 2022.
