La destrucción de la humanidad está programada. Y la responsable sería la inteligencia artificial desbocada, según el grito de alarma de Jacob Coxon, un reconocido investigador británico de inteligencia artificial. Renunció a su puesto en Anthropic, uno de los principales desarrolladores de IA. Una tecnología tan potente que terminará escapando al control de sus ambiciosos creadores, que ahora, ante su propio Frankestein quieren pisar el freno e incluso impulsar una regulación. Así va el ritmo de anuncios en el campo de la IA. En paralelo, se activan mecanismos más silenciosos que deterioran cada vez más el mundo laboral sin ir hasta remplazarnos. No hay día sin titulares sobre la IA. Titulares sobre su descontrol, sobre los posibles acuerdos entre China y Estados Unidos, grandes rivales y al mismo tiempo grandes árbitros de una tecnología regida por empresas propulsadas por la desregulación y que ahora lanzan un llamado contundente a desacelerar. "No es la primera vez que hay una secuencia mediática sobre las potencialidades, los poderes, los riesgos de la inteligencia artificial", advierte Juan Sebastián Carbonell, sociólogo del mundo del trabajo, autor de 'Un taylorismo aumentado, crítica de la inteligencia artificial' (Ediciones Amsterdam). El investigador recuerda que es una tecnología existente desde los años 1950. Recuerda igualmente que en esta nueva secuencia mediática "las empresas de tecnología y las empresas de Inteligencia Artificial anuncian estos riesgos existenciales con respecto a la tecnología que ellos mismos desarrollan" invirtiendo millones, sino billones, en nuevos centros de datos. Al anunciar estos riesgos, ellos mismos se reservan "la responsabilidad de controlar o si no de regular esta tecnología. Y esto plantea, a mi parecer, un problema que es un problema de democracia sobre quién decide sobre esta tecnología y cuáles son sus reales finalidades." Una inflación de "expectativas tecnológicas" Según el también profesor de la Universidad de tecnología de Compiègne, estamos en plena inflación de las expectativas tecnológicas de la IA: "Hay expectativas sobre el hecho de que la inteligencia artificial pueda resolver todos los problemas de la humanidad, cuando en realidad no es el caso". El autor lamenta que pongamos el foco en ciertos problemas y eludamos los reales problemas democráticos, laborales y ambientales. Esto es amplificado por medios de comunicación que retoman el discurso de las grandes empresas de la IA sin cuestionarlo. "Y un último actor detrás esas expectativas tecnológicas, es el Estado que regula, desregula, invierte, por ejemplo, con contratos muy numerosos entre el Estado, los servicios públicos y empresas de la inteligencia artificial. Y el rol de estas expectativas tecnológicas es justamente crear un mercado de la inteligencia artificial" La "primavera de la IA" Todo esto es propicio a una "primavera" de la IA. Como las estaciones, la IA, desde sus inicios, conoce momentos más prósperos y otros más confidenciales. La "primavera" actual viene desde el 2012 ligada a ciertos avances en "computer vision". "Y es muy probable que haya un nuevo invierno. Hay debates para saber sobre qué es lo que va a provocar un nuevo invierno  Por ejemplo, se habla mucho de la burbuja de la inteligencia artificial." Pero no es la explosión de esta burbuja que acabará con la IA como la burbuja de internet no enterró internet. En ese momento, "hubo muchas bancarrotas pero Internet siguió existiendo. Entonces, a mi parecer, lo que puede suceder es que haya bancarrota de empresas de inteligencia artificial, pero qcomo tecnología continuará y tambiéncomo infraestructura de la economía". Ante este panorama, qué pensar de la era "terminator" que nos anuncian los propios creadores de esta tecnología. El investigador estima que antes, hay que prestarle atención a lo que sucede en el mundo del trabajo y a nuestra precarización colectiva. Los obreros de la IA Poco se habla "del trabajo detrás del desarrollo de los modelos de inteligencia artificial. Todos esos trabajadores de que muchas veces en países del Tercer Mundo que están entrenando a los modelos de inteligencia artificial. Y se encuentran en Madagascar, pero también en América Latina, Muchos en Venezuela. Entonces, existe este trabajo que es muy precario, que es muy monótono, que es muy poco calificado, Pero existe también la manera en la que la inteligencia artificial degrada el trabajo." Pero en Europa, el trabajo cualificado también se degrada. Profesiones intelectuales como la de los traductores terminan bajando precios y casi trabajando para la IA porque les toca al final corregir el trabajo de una IA, sus alucinaciones, sus errores. "Estas empresas de inteligencia artificial justifican el uso de estas tecnologías diciendo que las tareas con fuerte valor agregado van a ser valorizadas, todo lo que es trabajo cognitivo, no rutinario, etcétera. Y que todas las tareas con poco valor agregado, más repetitivas, más monótonas, etcétera, van a ser automatizadas, Entonces el trabajo va a ser más interesante, más creativo", explica. "Pero lo que se observa hoy en día es que, por ejemplo, en el caso del traductor, en el caso de periodistas,  se automatiza también estas tareas creativas, también esas tareas con fuerte valor agregado. Y me parece que los sindicatos tienen un rol muy importante para justamente contrarrestar esta tendencia a la descalificación.", agrega. El trabajador VS la IA Ante esta tendencia aplanadora y un contexto geopolítico que favorece la carrera desaforada de la IA parece imposible escapar, porque no subirse al tren es quedarse atrás, especialmente en el caso europeo. "Entonces se presenta la Inteligencia Artificial como necesaria, sabiendo que, a mi parecer, el principal actor que debería movilizarse para contrarrestar esos efectos negativos es el mundo laboral, puesto que es el primero en entrenar estas inteligencias y el primero en vivir los efectos negativos." Ejemplos contundentes nos vienen paradójicamente de la Silicon Valley con los trabajadores de Google en 2018, "que se movilizaron contra la militarización de la inteligencia artificial y sobre todo, contra un contrato con el Pentágono, contra el Ministerio de la Guerra, como se le llama hoy en día en Estados Unidos, que quería desarrollar una tecnología de inteligencia artificial, de reconocimiento de objetivos militares por imágenes satelitales". Esta tecnología se utilizó más tarde, pero con otra empresa en la guerra en Irán. Episode 436: In June 1967, two of northern Saskatchewan's most respected bushmen, Métis political organizer James Brady and Cree band councillor Absolom Halkett, were dropped off by float plane to prospect for uranium near La Ronge. A week later, their employer found the camp standing, the beds slept in, the canoe still tied to shore. Both men were gone. The RCMP searched for three weeks, found a trail of unexplained clues, and closed the case without finding either man. More than fifty years later, a small team of researchers and family members went looking for answers the original investigation never sought, and what they discovered at the bottom of a northern lake raises more questions than it resolves.
