How do we hold the tension between automation advancements intended to make everyday life easier, with the intimacy that can only come through the work of our hands? What can we learn from Cree worldviews and ways of living? And what does it mean to navigate hardships that arise from systemic injustice next to the ones that come from a deeper participation in life?In this episode, Green Dreamer's Kaméa Chane speaks with Adrian Sutherland, a roots-rocker-with-heart from Attawapiskat in Ontario's Far North.Join us as Adrian offers a glimpse into the Cree traditions, crafts, and worldviews that have influenced his life as a musician, and more.We invite you to…tune in and subscribe to Green Dreamer via any podcast app;tap into our bonus extended and video version of this conversation on Patreon here;and read highlights from these conversations via Kaméa's newsletter here. The musical offerings in this episode are "Notawe" and "Precious" by Adrian Sutherland.

Si has puesto tu fe en Cristo, tu pasado no define tu identidad.

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the GRAND FINALE (Session 12) on lyin' Michelle Alexander's *The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness*. Alexander has a living White mother and a deceased Black father. Despite 15 years of institutional celebration for her work, Gus T. anticipated this title being one of the "5 Worst Books Ever." History shows that racists generally do not promote literature that provides an accurate understanding of the System of White Supremacy. This week, we drop the final Mario Elie "Kiss of Death" three-pointer on this text, permanently closing the casket on a 15-year academic hustle. We open the final chapter, *Obama: The Promise and the Peril*, and interrogate the absolute peak of her biographical dishonesty where she explicitly labels Affirmative Action a "racial bribe" that Black people must surrender to play academic "games of chicken" with their own survival. We back up our 12-week forensic media audit by deploying a devastating 14-minute custom audio track from our own 2010 CREE archive and 2016 public media slips. We let the Pusha T, Kendrick Lamar, Ray Charles, and Neely Fuller Jr. audio do the talking because Michelle Alexander has officially fouled out of the game! THE 15-POINT FORENSIC AUDIT SUMMARY: 1. The Manufactured "Underdog" Narrative: Claims she launched to half-empty rooms to conceal the massive institutional "push" that put her on C-SPAN, NPR, and Democracy Now within 5 months of publication. 2. Systemic Deception by Omission: Completely erases COINTELPRO, Jon Burge's torture ring, Attica, and the Black Panthers to bury earlier, more accurate structural work on the Prison-Industrial Complex. 3. Hidden Biographical Motivation: Willfully conceals her multi-ethnic background to hide her personal family defenses under the guise of objective scholarship. 4. Centering White Trauma: Explicitly argues that White women who chose to have interracial relationships under Jim Crow were primary, injured victims of a racial caste system. 5. The Fraudulent "Bribe" Thesis: Claims White people must be "bribed" to practice Racism, belied by a System of White Supremacy where whiteness automatically requires total domination. 6. Reckless Statistical Manipulation: Arbitrarily changes her state prison violent offender statistic from 33% to 52% between editions with zero data reconciliation or explanation. 7. Specious Claims as Fact: Drops massive, sweeping assertions straight onto the print page with absolutely zero footnotes or supporting empirical documentation. 8. The 1980s Progress Myth: Asserts that by the 1980s, the vast majority of White people opposed the practice of Racism—a completely ahistorical claim unsupported by any evidence. 9. Pathologizing Defense Mechanisms: Labels Affirmative Action a "racial bribe" for Black people, telling the victims of state terror to disarm while the system keeps its weapons. 10. Erasing the Real Beneficiaries: Refuses to inform readers of macro-data showing that White women have historically benefited most from Affirmative Action pipelines. 11. The "Accidental" Absolution: Labors mightily to frame the White power structure as ignorant, well-meaning, and "accidentally" racist to shield calculated state intent from exposure. 12. Coddling Whites, Targeting Black Institutions: Sweeps away structural White guilt while using print space to aggressively scold the CBC, the NAACP, and Bill Cosby. 13. Minstrel Linguistic Framing: Selectively quotes Black interviewees in broken, stereotypical English to frame them as inarticulate and implicitly deserving of incarceration. 14. Double-Dipping the Carceral Ledger: Hides that her husband Carter Stewart profited as a federal prosecutor caging Black bodies, while she profited off the fake literary outrage industry. 15. White-Identified Pronoun Usage: Deploys a slippery use of "we," "us," and "our" to identify with White spaces and lump the victims of Racism in as equally culpable for the system. Quizás eres la única persona de tu familia que ora. fWotD Episode 3334: Tatannuaq Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 21 June 2026, is Tatannuaq.Tatannuaq (Inuktitut: ᑕᑕᓐᓄᐊᖅ, Inuktitut pronunciation: [tatanːuaq], c. 1790s – early 1834), also known as Tattannoeuck or Augustus, was an Inuk interpreter for two of John Franklin's Arctic expeditions in what is now Canada. Originally from a group of Inuit living 320 km (200 mi) north of Churchill, then part of Rupert's Land, he was employed as an interpreter at the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) trading post in Churchill, becoming proficient in English and Cree. He explained various geographical and Inuit cultural characteristics to Franklin.Tatannuaq was hired as one of two Inuit interpreters to accompany Franklin's 1819–1822 Coppermine expedition; during the expedition, Franklin would sometimes send him ahead of the party to scout the terrain, and he helped to communicate with groups they encountered. The expedition was plagued by starvation and by the deaths of the majority of the expedition party on the return journey. He accompanied Franklin on the 1825–1827 Mackenzie River expedition, where he served a diplomatic role and dissuaded Inuit groups from attacking the expedition. After several years of interpreter service at the HBC post at Fort Chimo, he departed to the interior to assist in locating John Ross's expedition, but died due to bad weather a short distance from Fort Resolution in early 1834. The butterfly species Callophrys augustinus and a Northwest Territories lake were named for him. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:04 UTC on Sunday, 21 June 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Tatannuaq on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Jasmine.

S8, Ep 44: The Legacy of Classic Flies: Allen Rupp's Insights on Timeless Patterns

Episode OverviewThe Articulate Fly host Marvin Cash sits down with fly tying guru Allen Rupp, founder of Fly on the Water and Dave Whitlock's hand-selected legacy tier, for a deep dive into the classic fly patterns that built modern fly fishing. Rupp traces his fly tying education back to childhood phone calls with Bob Clouser, in-person mentorship from Lefty Kreh and George Harvey, and decades spent learning directly from Dave Whitlock, explaining why patterns like the Clouser Minnow, the Half and Half, Lefty's Deceiver and Whitlock's Near Nuff Crayfish and Sculpin remain so effective that newer materials and techniques rarely improve on them. The conversation ranges from the upper Potomac River, where Rupp first learned to tie and fish, to saltwater destinations like the Seychelles and the Amazon, where his Semper Fli patterns are now requested by name by local guides. Rupp and Cash dig into why presentation matters more than fly choice (a lesson Rupp learned fishing a single hare's ear nymph for an entire year), how legends like Whitlock and Clouser relentlessly simplified their patterns rather than complicating them, where to source increasingly scarce natural materials like hand-plucked mallard flank and Cree hackle, and which adhesives belong on every serious tier's bench. Whether you fish for smallmouth bass, stripers, bonefish or golden dorado, this episode is a masterclass in why the old patterns still catch fish and what they can teach today's tiers about durability, simplicity and effective design.Key TakeawaysHow focusing on a single fly pattern for an entire season can teach anglers that presentation matters more than fly choice. Why classic patterns like the Clouser Minnow, the Half and Half and Lefty's Deceiver remain more effective than many modern variations. How simplifying a fly pattern down to its essential materials often makes it more durable and more effective than adding complexity. Why choosing the right adhesive for a material (soft adhesive for soft materials, rigid adhesive for hard surfaces) prevents premature fly failure. When to source fly tying materials from non-fly shop retailers like craft and fabric stores. How filling Clouser Minnow thread wraps with resin in a triangle or heart shape creates a fly that is nearly weedless.Techniques & Gear CoveredRupp walks through the construction logic behind classic patterns including the Clouser Minnow, the Half and Half, Lefty's Deceiver, the CK Baitfish, Chico's Bonefish Special, Lou Tabory's Snake Fly and Dave Whitlock's Near Nuff Crayfish and Sculpin, explaining how each pattern's simplicity contributes to its durability and fish-catching consistency. He details specific tying fixes including pre-treating deer hair eye cavities with Flexament before adding Goop and a final drop of Flexament to prevent eyes from popping off, and filling Clouser Minnow thread wraps with resin in a triangle or heart shape to create a snag-resistant profile. On adhesives, Rupp runs a bench of nine different products including Zap-A-Gap in two viscosities, Softex, Tuffleye and various other cements, matching soft adhesives to soft materials like deer hair and rigid adhesives to harder surfaces. For tools he favors Mark Petitjean bobbins for fine thread work and Renomed scissors for their durability and lifetime warranty, while sourcing scarce natural materials like Cree hackle, hand-plucked mallard flank and dry fly saddles from specialty sellers.Locations & SpeciesRupp's tying and fishing roots trace to the upper Potomac River and the Mid-Atlantic region of Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania, where he learned from guide Mark Kovach and crossed paths with Lefty Kreh and Bob Clouser at regional fly fishing shows. His classic patterns now see action well beyond home water, targeting smallmouth bass and trout in eastern rivers, striped bass at night from Virginia to Maine on Lou Tabory's Snake Fly, and trevally and golden dorado in destinations like the Seychelles and South America, where his Semper Fli pattern has become a guide favorite.FAQ / Key Questions AnsweredWhy do classic fly patterns like the Clouser Minnow and Lefty's Deceiver still outperform many modern variations?Allen Rupp explains that classic patterns endured because their originators relentlessly simplified them down to only the materials necessary for action and durability rather than adding complexity for visual appeal. Newer flies often look more elaborate but can introduce problems like tails that foul on the cast, while classics like the Deceiver (just bucktail, feathers and flash) remain reliably effective. How does fly choice compare to presentation in catching more fish?Rupp credits mentor Brad Yoder with the lesson that presentation matters far more than fly pattern, after fishing a single gold-ribbed hare's ear nymph exclusively for an entire year. He caught roughly the same number of fish as he had with pattern variety, reinforcing that learning to fish one fly in every water condition teaches more than chasing the next new pattern. What is the best adhesive to use on different fly tying materials?Rupp's rule, learned from Dave Whitlock, is to match a soft, flexible adhesive like Flexament to soft, flexible materials like deer hair and reserve rigid adhesives like Zap-A-Gap for harder surfaces. Using a rigid adhesive on a flexible material creates a stress point that cracks and fails after a few fish.Where can tiers find scarce natural materials like Cree hackle and quality mallard flank?Rupp sources hard-to-find feathers and fibers from a mix of specialty sellers, friends who hunt and hand-pluck birds, and even craft stores like Michaels and Joann Fabrics for items like glass beads, foam and embroidery materials. He notes that machine-plucked commercial mallard flank is often unusable for patterns requiring intact feather shape, making hand-plucked birds essential for some classic ties. What is swing nymphing and where did the technique originate?Swing nymphing is a technique Rupp developed independently as a teenager on the upper Potomac by adapting light jig presentations to a fly rod, only to later learn that Charlie Brooks had pioneered the same approach on the Yellowstone River decades earlier. Rupp covers the technique in an upcoming magazine article and credits Harry Murray's writing for connecting him to its origins.SponsorsThanks to TroutRoutes for sponsoring this episode.
