In 1969, Hoffert co-founded Lighthouse with drummer Skip Prokop, creating Canada's first 13-piece rock orchestra blending rock, jazz horns, and strings. Hits like "One Fine Morning" (#24 US, #2 Canada) propelled millions of records sold, three Juno Awards, world tours, and openers for Duke Ellington. Hoffert played keys/vibraphone and arranged until 1974; the band reunited in 1992 and continues today. Today we’ll talk about the release of “One Fine Morning (Anniversary Edition),” which is now available on limited edition three-colour-splatter vinyl, sun/moon vinyl, double CD and digitally. This is the first-ever fully remixed, remastered and expanded edition of the platinum-selling band’s breakthrough 1971 release. Then, we meet filmmaker Tasha Hubbard. Based on her own documentary Birth of a Family, her movie “Meadowlarks,” in theatres now, stars top Indigenous actors Michael Greyeyes, Carmen Moore, Alex Rice and Michelle Thrush as four Cree siblings, separated since childhood and now in their fifties, who agree to meet for the first time over a holiday weekend in Banff. The siblings were part of the 60s Scoop (1951-1991), seized by the government and placed in non-Indigenous homes.

They are included in discussions but have no negotiation power outside of the official representation from the countries they reside in. Many Indigenous attendees have organized marches, experienced civil disobedience, and even clashed with security officials in order to have their voices heard. Notably absent from this year's talks is any senior Trump administration delegation. We'll hear Indigenous perspectives about their role at COP30. We'll also hear from Cree journalist Brandi Morin, who spent months reporting on conflicts between Indigenous communities in Ecuador and Canadian mining companies. Currently, Ecuador's president is working on reforming the country's constitution to open up more natural resources for extraction. He is from Edmonton, Alberta (traditionally known, in the language of the Cree, as Amiskwaciy [Beaver Hill] and later Amiskwaciwaskihegan [Beaver Hill House]) and currently lives in Duncan, BC (Quw'utsun territory). In this episode, Lian and Tad explore how living stories form culture, meaning they're more than psychological metaphors, they're teachings tied to the land and beings around us. Este 4 de noviembre, el cierre del Gobierno estadounidense, el llamado “shutdown”, cumple 35 días, igualando el más largo de la historia que tuvo lugar en 2019 durante el primer mandato de Donald Trump. Republicanos y Demócratas no logran un acuerdo para extender el presupuesto gubernamental y las agencias públicas ya se ven afectadas. La ayuda alimentaria, que beneficia a 42 millones de estadounidenses, se reducirá a la mitad por falta de fondos. Son 35 días de cierre de Gobierno, igualando un récord que se va a batir. El presupuesto del Ejecutivo ha expirado y Republicanos y Demócratas no logran un acuerdo en el Capitolio para aprobar una extensión que permita la financiación de las operaciones gubernamentales. Numerosas agencias han detenido total o parcialmente sus operaciones y miles de trabajadores públicos han sido suspendidos temporalmente de su empleo o deben trabajar gratis.  Los demócratas “quieren que este conflicto político persista” Los republicanos tienen la mayoría absoluta en la Cámara de Representantes y todo depende del Senado, donde el partido de Donald Trump cuenta con 53 escaños y necesita siete apoyos, de demócratas o independientes, para aprobar un mayor techo de gasto. Andrés Guilarte es republicano y vicepresidente de Investigación de Opinión de EyesOver US. Cree que los demócratas no mueven ficha porque pueden sacar rédito político: “El votante promedio asume que bueno, si los que están en el poder son los republicanos, hay una leve mayoría que piensa que aquí se tiene que culpar a los republicanos. Pero hay unas elecciones muy importantes en Virginia para el gobernador, en New Jersey para gobernador, y en Nueva York hay elecciones para el alcalde, y creemos que una de las razones por las cuales los demócratas no quieren terminar de abrir el Gobierno, es porque quieren que este conflicto político persista, para ver si eso tiene algún tipo de rédito positivo para ellos. Porque esas tres elecciones están usando esos argumentos también, de que tienen que votar por nosotros porque los republicanos no quieren abrir el Gobierno”. Los republicanos “le están fallando al pueblo americano” La situación podría resumirse así: los republicanos quieren acordar primero la ampliación de presupuesto y luego negociar las demandas demócratas, principalmente en sanidad, y los demócratas quieren llegar primero a un acuerdo sobre sus demandas y después ampliar el presupuesto. Annabel Guillén-Casañas es estratega política demócrata. Piensa que el inmovilismo en el Capitolio viene de que los republicanos no se atreven a negociar sin el visto bueno de Trump. Es momento de poner la política a un lado, y que el Congreso asuma su responsabilidad. Ahora mismo, en la Cámara de Representantes lo que tenemos son sellos de goma. Lo que diga el presidente Trump es lo que el speaker Johnson va a hacer. La responsabilidad mayor está entonces en este momento en el Partido Republicano. Al final del día le están fallando al pueblo americano. Son nuestros congresistas y esos senadores que tienen el poder de ir por encima del presidente y no lo hacen. De momento, se considera que la actual parálisis del Gobierno ha costado al país más de 14.000 millones de dólares.

Tengo veintiocho años y me siento muy triste porque me he dado cuenta de que desperdicié toda mi juventud en nada.... »Muchas personas tienen vidas exitosas a esta edad; en cambio, yo no tengo ningún don ni talento. Tengo complicaciones de salud. Temo que es un tumor o un cáncer, pero debido al miedo y a la vergüenza no pienso ir a un hospital.... »He pensado que quizá todas estas situaciones sean un castigo de Dios, porque realmente yo soy una persona que no vale para nada. La mayoría de las noches lloro de tristeza por mi situación, y expreso mis sentimientos en oración. »¿Cree usted que Jesucristo escucha lo que yo digo en oración? He pensado mucho acabar con mi existencia, porque pienso que al morir no tendré que sufrir.... No sé por qué nací.» Este es el consejo que le dio mi esposa: «Estimado amigo: »Nos entristece mucho lo que ha estado sufriendo. También sabemos con certeza que Dios no sólo escucha sus oraciones sino también está muy interesado en su bienestar. Su Hijo Jesucristo enseñó: “¿No se venden dos gorriones por una monedita? Sin embargo, ni uno de ellos caerá a tierra sin que lo permita el Padre. Él les tiene contados aun los cabellos de la cabeza. Así que no tengan miedo, ustedes valen más que muchos gorriones.”1 »¡Es increíble pensar que Dios se interesa a tal grado por cada uno de nosotros! Él nos ama sin que importen nuestros talentos, triunfos o logros, porque somos su creación divina, planeados antes de la fundación del mundo. »Usted nació como una expresión del amor de Dios. Ahora el propósito por el que fue creado es amarlo y estar dispuesto a permitir que Él lo guíe y le muestre el camino hacia el futuro que ha planeado para su vida.2 »Sin embargo, sospechamos que usted padece de un desequilibrio en las sustancias químicas de su cerebro para el que hay medicamentos que pudieran ayudarlo. Nosotros no somos médicos, y ni siquiera un médico podría diagnosticar ninguna irregularidad basado simplemente en el breve caso que nos ha contado, pero usted en definitiva tiene síntomas que requieren atención médica. El temor que siente de encontrar una grave enfermedad es en realidad un síntoma común de los trastornos de ansiedad, a la vez que sus pensamientos de causarse daño pudieran ser el resultado de una depresión clínica.
