Economic growth and our expected future

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 28, 2016 53:00

I will show how to analyse data and how to predict future trends. This part of the presentation can be applied to a study of any kinds of growth. I will then apply these methods to the analysis of the global economic growth and show what we can expect in the future. Is our global economic growth secure and if not what should be done to avoid the possible global economic collapse. Time permitting, I will present projections of the economic growth in Australia and compare them with the projections of the economic growth in the US. I will show that the economic growth in the US is secure, while in Australia it is not. I will then discuss what should be done to improve the prospect of the economic growth in Australia. If I have more time I will discuss the economic growth in Greece and what we can learn from their experience. All these topics are vitally important for everyone, over the whole range of age groups. Methods of analysis of growth trends should be of interest to anyone dealing with such matters.

Science Denial -- a danger to the future

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 28, 2016 45:00

We are seeing more and more cases in which settled conclusions in science are being disputed. This is a normal development among scientists, but in cases of denial, the motivations and the arguments have nothing to do with science. In some cases, the consequences of denial are the deaths of millions of people. This session addresses the phenomenon of denial, in science and other fields. Its origins will be explored and some of its major tactics explained. Then we can discuss methods of detecting denial and distinguishing it from genuine dissent, and ways in which it can be addressed

The Coastal Management Engagement Program

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2013 30:00

Developed in 2001, the Coastal Community Engagement Program was developed to maximise community understanding of natural coastal processes and management strategies. Essentially, bridging the gap between coastal decision makers and other stakeholders, which is necessary for sustainable coastal management. Community awareness, education and involvement are valuable tools towards long-term sustainable coastal systems. The program is primarily funded and delivered on behalf of Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) and incorporates four key projects: CoastEd, BeachCare, the Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beaches Competition, and Beachology.

Should we be teaching climate change in schools and if so, how and to what end?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2013 30:00

Human forced rapid climate change is the "uber" environmental problem of our era with far reaching social, economic, and political implications. The further into the future we look, the greater the projected climate change impacts. Our children and grandchildren will grow in a very different environment. However, the climate change problem is not a simple problem that can be readily explained, it is politically contentious, and cuts across key learning areas with contributions needed from the physical sciences, social sciences and the humanities.

Flash Science – using microdocs in your class

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2013 55:00

Short videos on Blogs, Facebook and You Tube are frequently used by students to access quick and easy information. A wide range of products are available but often do not provide the right material for the lecture. However, microdocs (micro-documentaries) are a great way to promote and communicate science. This session provides an overview of currently available resources and explores the possibilities and difficulties that short science documentaries can bring into your classroom. A number of examples will be given and a demonstration on how to do your own microdoc..

Crossing the 'technology pain barrier' - has computing and technology now become ubiquitous in our lives? If so, why are people cautious about learning more about the technology they use daily? How does the introduction of avatar-like social interaction on the internet enhance or detract from 'real' social interaction now and in the future? Artificial Intelligence to the rescue! - intelligent systems that are making a difference in our lives right now, and what the future holds in this area of cutting-edge research.
