With the concerns around how powerful the American president has become in the last 50 years, political scientist Adam Carrington helps us look at the Constitution and what his powers are. And with Reformation Day coming up on October 31, he talks about how the various branches of Christianity still share a common ground we can work together upon. Plus, with Reformation Day on the way, Pastor Alfonso Espinosa, author of "Contending for Christ Through the Creed," helps us think about the completed work for Jesus on our behalf.

What if confidence isn't something you're born with—but something you build? In this episode of Dancing in the Discomfort Zone, I talk with Jenn Espinosa-Goswami, (https://www.weightlesschronicles.com/) international speaker, certified speaking coach, and founder of Weightless Chronicles, about her journey from bullied kid to bold speaker. After growing up teased for her weight and hiding from the spotlight, Jenn discovered her voice through a study abroad program in Germany—and eventually lost 100 pounds, found her confidence, and built a career helping others find theirs.Jenn's message is clear: confidence isn't about perfection, it's about practice. She shares her four-step transformation process—creating awareness, setting clear goals, celebrating progress, and reflecting on what works—and how those same principles apply far beyond weight loss.We dive into the difference between authenticity and oversharing, how to own your story without giving it all away, and what it really takes to step into visibility as a speaker, leader, or human being who's done hiding. What You'll Hear AboutHow to build confidence like a muscle—one rep at a timeThe secret difference between authenticity and being unfilteredWhy you're not the hero of your story (and who really is)How to handle judgment and stop seeking approvalPractical steps to find your voice, own your story, and speak with impactJenn's journey proves that transformation isn't magic—it's methodical, mindful, and absolutely possible for anyone ready to grow.
It's part 2 of our dive into the Insect Apocalypse, with our good friend Dr. Jason Dombroskie from the Cornell University Insect Collection! In this part, Jason fills us in on the drivers of the Insect Apocalypse and - most importantly - what we can do about it.This episode was recorded on August 21, 2025 at Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area in Dalton, NY.. Episode NotesDuring the episode, we made the claim that 40 million acres of the US is lawn, and that that area is equal to all of the country's National Parks put together. True? Well, sort of. The claim that the U.S. has about 40 million acres of lawn—roughly equal to all our national parks combined—is only partly true. A NASA-funded study led by Cristina Milesi estimated that turfgrass covers about 128,000 km² (≈31 million acres) of the continental U.S., making it the largest irrigated “crop” in the country (Milesi et al., Environmental Management, 2005; NASA Earth Observatory). Later analyses and popular summaries often round that up to ≈40 million acres (e.g., Scienceline, 2011; LawnStarter, 2023). By comparison, the total land area of all officially designated U.S. National Parks is about 52.4 million acres, while the entire National Park System—which also includes monuments, preserves, and historic sites—covers about 85 million acres (National Park Service, 2024). So while lawns and parks occupy areas of similar magnitude, lawns do not actually equal or exceed the combined area of the national parks. Is it better to mulch leaves on your lawn or leave them be? Here's what we found: It's generally best to mulch your leaves with a mower rather than rake or remove them. Research from Michigan State University found that mowing leaves into small pieces allows them to decompose quickly, returning nutrients to the soil and reducing weeds like dandelions and crabgrass (MSU Extension, “Don't rake leaves — mulch them into your lawn”, 2012). Cornell University studies similarly show that mulched leaves improve soil structure, moisture retention, and microbial activity (Cornell Cooperative Extension, “Leaf Mulching: A Sustainable Alternative”, 2019). However, in garden beds, wooded edges, or under shrubs, it's often better to leave leaves whole, since they provide winter habitat for butterflies, bees, and other invertebrates that overwinter in leaf litter (National Wildlife Federation, “Leave the Leaves for Wildlife”, 2020). The ideal approach is a mix: mow-mulch leaves on grassy areas for turf health and leave them intact where they naturally fall to support biodiversity and soil ecology.

Prepare yourself for a sobering look at the increasingly invasive world of technology monetization. Nick Espinosa, Chief Security Fanatic, joins the Tech Time crew to expose how tech giants are finding alarming new ways to serve us advertisements – from Samsung refrigerators with built-in ads to Microsoft's new full-screen "scoop" ads in Windows 11 that you can't escape. As Nick bluntly puts it, "We're never going to get rid of ads. They are trying to monetize absolutely everything."The conversation takes a disturbing turn when examining the recent deepfake case in Scotland, where a man received only a fine after creating and sharing non-consensual nude images with a woman's face. This landmark case highlights the inadequacy of current legal frameworks to address AI-generated content that causes real psychological harm. Meanwhile, Google's takedown of 224 Android apps involved in a massive ad fraud operation generating 2.3 billion daily requests raises serious questions about mobile device security.OpenAI's forthcoming $4 ChatGPT Go plan signals a potentially revolutionary shift in how we'll access information. This budget-friendly AI service, already available in India and Indonesia, raises fascinating questions about the future of search and whether "better thinking" will become a premium service only available to those willing to pay for it.The team also examines how AI might impact child development, with Mike offering compelling arguments about the dangers of using technology as a substitute for human interaction. His concern that "it's not human development, it's human replacement" resonates deeply as we consider the implications of AI companions for our youngest generation.Subscribe now for more insights on navigating our increasingly complex digital landscape without losing your privacy, security, or sanity in the process. Latinos are no longer an “up-and-coming” community. The numbers tell a different story. By 2050, one in three Americans will be Latino. Today, 78% of new workers entering the labor force are Hispanic, and Latino-owned businesses are growing 10 times faster than white-owned businesses. Bilingualism has become a cultural and business superpower, and the contributions of our community are fueling the economy, culture, and future of the United States. Yet, even with this undeniable growth, representation and opportunity do not always reflect our impact. In this episode of Amiga, Handle Your Shit, we welcome back our amigas Marisela Arechiga and Lizette Espinoza. Together, we have an honest conversation about what the data means for our future, how to raise bicultural families while honoring immigrant legacies, and why mindset shifts are critical if Latinas want to move from consumers to investors, from employees to entrepreneurs, and from overlooked voices to decision-makers.Tune in to episode 248 to hear us unpack Hollywood's gatekeeping and the lack of Latino-led stories, the challenges of raising kids in a consumer-driven, social media-saturated culture, and why education and parenting must push the next generation to think beyond worker-bee mindsets. We also discuss how community, mentorship, and financial literacy can break cycles of fear and scarcity, helping Latinas step fully into their power as leaders, wealth-builders, and cultural changemakers. If you are ready for real talk on how Latinas are shaping America now and what it takes to ensure our future, this conversation will leave you informed, inspired, and motivated to act.Episode TakeawaysWhy speaking Spanish at home is both a cultural connection and a business superpower (03:50)The data: Hispanics are projected to account for 78% of net new workers between 2020 and 2030 (07:00)Why Hollywood resists Latino-led stories and Marisela's HGTV pitch experience (12:10)The role of decision-makers and gatekeeping in representation (14:00)Why thinking like an employee keeps you stuck as an employee (22:00)The pressure of social media on today's Latino youth (24:00)“You're working hard at playing small”: shifting from consumerism to investment (28:20)Why masterminds, mentorship, and community are key to breaking fear around money (35:30)Connect with Marisela Arechiga:InstagramNew Generation Home Improvements WebsiteNew Generation Home Improvements InstagramConnect with Lizette Espinosa:InstagramLinkedInInfanttech's WebsiteLet's Connect!WebsiteFacebookInstagramArbonne's websiteBook: The AMIGA Way Hosted on Acast. This episode explores Caliban's role in The Tempest and the ways his character has been shaped by and interpreted through race, class, and colonialism. We begin with a close look at “the pinch” and unpack how Shakespeare's audience would have understood its connections to resource scarcity and punishment. We then chart Caliban's performance history from the 19th century to the early 1980s, revealing how shifting portrayals reflected cultural attitudes. We end with a discussion of how the play's deep entanglement with colonial discourse has led to it being banned in some U.S. classrooms. After acing a pop quiz that all teachers in Oklahoma public school teachers need to pass, Political scientist Mark Caleb Smith talks about well-intentioned, but badly reasoned legislation that would declare that things in nature have human rights.
The digital landscape is evolving at breakneck speed, and with it comes a host of unexpected consequences that blur the lines between helpful innovation and concerning overreach. In this eye-opening episode, we examine how AI is creeping into spaces where human judgment and empathy might better serve us.A troubling new wave of voice phishing attacks has emerged, with cybercriminals using AI to perfectly mimic human voices in real-time conversations. Even tech giant Google fell victim to this sophisticated approach when the notorious Shiny Hunters group breached their Salesforce CRM instance. The days of obvious phishing emails are behind us – now your boss's voice on the phone might actually be an AI impersonation designed to extract sensitive information. Our special guest Nick Espinoza joins us to unpack the fascinating world of AI competitions, revealing how OpenAI's model recently outperformed Elon Musk's Grok in a chess tournament. But the conversation takes a more serious turn when we discuss government pushes for backdoor access to AI chips – ostensibly for security, but creating vulnerabilities that could be exploited. Most alarming is the FDA's implementation of AI in drug approval processes, with former employees reporting the system hallucinating non-existent studies and misrepresenting research. The human cost of AI overreach becomes clear when we explore the growing trend of using chatbots for psychological support. As one journalist discovered when using ChatGPT for couples counseling, these systems lack the empathy and insight necessary for therapeutic work, exhibiting "sycophancy" by agreeing with users rather than providing objective guidance. On a lighter note, we tackle Nintendo's official announcement that Mario has been friend-zoned by Princess Peach after four decades of rescue missions, and share the tale of a man who successfully sued Google after Street View captured him naked in his private backyard despite having a tall privacy wall.Pour yourself a glass and join us as we taste Still Austin Straight Rye whiskey while navigating the complex intersection of technology, privacy, and human connection in our rapidly evolving digital world.Support the show
