Between 1776 and 1777, numerous battles were fought for control over the Port of New York, including the Battles of Harlem Heights, Pell's Point, White Plains, Fort Washington, and the largest battle of the entire revolution, the Battle of Long Island/Brooklyn. Recognizing the strategic importance of New York, and forewarned by his experience at the Battle of Bunker Hill in Boston, Lieutenant-General Sir William Howe and royal governor Lord George Germain recruited Hessian mercenaries and soldiers from across the empire to defend the city from an eventual patriot campaign to claim New York. In 1776, George Washington, as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, began preparations for what we know today as the New York and New Jersey Campaign. Though the campaign failed to fortify New York from Sir William Howe, which remained in British control until the end of the war in 1783, the revolution might have ended altogether on Staten Island when William and his brother, Admiral Richard Howe, entered peace negotiations with the Americans. In a September 11, 1776, meeting, the Howes met with John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Edward Rutledge for an unsuccessful three-hour negotiation. Four days later, Howe, as Commander-in-Chief of British Land Forces in America, landed 12,000 troops in lower Manhattan and quickly claimed the city. Though the British took control of New York Harbor and the surrounding agricultural areas, the areas around New York and New Jersey remained active battlegrounds for the rest of the revolution. When the war ended, it saw some of the last British soldiers evacuate the new United States, including thousands of free and formerly enslaved Africans who had served the empire in the war, documented by The Book of Negroes. Battle in the Margins is a special project of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation in collaboration with Black Gotham Experience, an organization devoted to African Diasporic storytelling, to commemorate the African Diaspora's impact on the American Revolution. Stakeknife, real name Freddie Scappaticci, continues to be officially denied as a British agent by the Government. This is part of their Neither Confirm Nor Deny policy. Indeed the IRA itself is in denial over Scappaticci's role, which was as a senior member of the provisionals' Internal Security Unit, responsible for rooting out IRA Volunteers who had been giving information to the RUC, Army or MI5. The methods employed by Scappaticci and fellow IRA members involved torture, and ended with shots to head, hence their nickname, the Nutting Squad. A recent inquiry, Operation Kenova, concluded with the Head of the PSNI saying Scappaticci cost more lives than he saved. But, in that same report states he provided a VAST amount of intelligence much of which was valuable. He seemed primarily to be providing his Army handlers, the Force Research Unit, with information on what the IRA was thinking strategically. So, if much of his intelligence was valuable, that presented a complex moral challenge, particularly when one remembers there were dealing with a highly advanced insurgency that killed nearly 2,000 people during the Troubles, around 650 of whom were civilians. But at the same time Scappaticci was, in some cases, torturing British agents himself. In addition, the same organisation, the FRU, ran another agent, Brian Nelson, within the loyalist UDA, and he was in the habit of providing addresses of suspected IRA members to his comrades, who would then pay them a visit and carry out murder and mayhem. He would obtain these details from the Army, and innocent civilians were killed, among them Patrick Finucane, a solicitor from West Belfast. Joining today is John Ware, BBC man, Panorama presenter, and the man who broke the Omagh bombing story. He's a highly respected journalist of the Troubles, interested in the moral compromises that had to be made during the conflict in Northern Ireland. He's written a new book, Neither Confirm Nor Deny. So it's not political. Now fans can have fun doing compare/contrast. This ends up more like denominations who unify in essential faith. (And yet that only goes so far. Holland won't meet Madame Webb.) 3. The rise of self-aware yet sincere stories. This year we've seen a wonderful increase of truly good films. Three come from Amazon/MGM: Project Hail Mary, The Sheep Detectives, and even Masters of the Universe all work so well. Jenneth Leed praised Hail Mary's earnest optimism and hope. This is “metamodern,” a flavor beyond modern and postmodern. Now we've faced real-life dystopia, war, political unrest, and a divided society. More people long for the hope of modernism, but aren't so naïve to think life doesn't come with the complexities postmodernism criticized. So instead of embracing one philosophy over another, metamodernism combines the best features of both. This approach keeps the self-awareness, irony, and subversions of expectations. But these stories also value hope, sincere themes, and admirable heroes. In fact, one working definition for metamodern storytelling may be, “Delivering a sincere theme about life in a self-aware or absurd premise.” Note: this isn't the same as flippant stories that claim “optimism.” And it's a whole galaxy far from stories ashamed of their nature. Stephen has loved “metamodern” stories wherever they appear. The Tick and Galaxy Quest also skewer tropes yet stay sincere. Even the original Superman: The Movie (1978) does this so well. Do note Richard Donner's out-loud commitment to verisimilitude. So do Sam Raimi's and Marc Webb's two Spider-Man film series. And one detects much of this in Lord and Miller's Spiderverse Brand New Day will likely follow in these wall-crawling footsteps. We've had enough division over clashing canons and flippancy. Through other reboots and controversies, Spidey stays faithful! And if other Marvel and DC films do the same, they can unify fans. They cast people they do not know as villains in a fantasy world in which they are the big moral heroes. This habit is taking over social media. And now this sin is hurting faithful creators we know.
