Larry Swedroe – Be Ware of Idiosyncratic Risks

BIO: Larry Swedroe is head of financial and economic research at Buckingham Wealth Partners.STORY: Larry chose to invest in an individual bank stock in the mid-80s instead of following his gut to invest in a portfolio of stocks. The bank's President committed fraud, and the company went bankrupt. Larry lost about 80% of his investment.LEARNING: Avoid idiosyncratic risks by hyper-diversifying your portfolio. “Focus on managing risks and not trying to generate alpha or risk-adjusted outperformance.”Larry Swedroe Guest profileLarry Swedroe is head of financial and economic research at Buckingham Wealth Partners. Since joining the firm in 1996, Larry has spent his time, talent, and energy educating investors on the benefits of evidence-based investing with enthusiasm few can match.Larry was among the first authors to publish a book that explained the science of investing in layman's terms, “The Only Guide to a Winning Investment Strategy You'll Ever Need.” He has authored or co-authored 18 books.Larry's dedication to helping others has made him a sought-after national speaker. He has made appearances on national television on various outlets.Larry is a prolific writer, regularly contributing to multiple outlets, including AlphaArchitect, Advisor Perspectives, and Wealth Management.Worst investment everIn the mid-80s, while Larry was working at Citicorp as the regional treasurer on the West Coast, his colleague and friend convinced him to invest in a company called Jefferson National Bank. Larry happened to believe in two themes that were behind his friend's recommendation. One, this was a small regional bank, and Larry was confident that the US would allow consolidation to build national banks. So there was going to be a trend of purchasing well-run small banks at premiums to enable the big banks to become national. Two, the bank was located on the border between Canada and upstate New York. There was a military base with a good, sound community, making it suitable for businesses. Larry also believed NAFTA would pass, which would build up the trade in the area.Larry then called a bunch of friends in the banking business and asked them what they thought of this company. Most were impressed by how well the bank was run and the good earnings. Everything seemed suitable for an investor. The President of the bank committed fraud, and the company went bankrupt. Larry lost about 80% of his investment.Looking at hindsight, Larry could have made a much more intelligent bet by avoiding idiosyncratic risks. He could have found a collection of regional stocks with the same advantages as the bank he invested in but without the idiosyncratic risk.Lessons learnedLarry has, over time, developed three principles of investing:Principle one: If the markets are sufficiently efficient, invest in systematic, transparent, rapidly run funds that try to keep their trading costs down with patient...

In this episode of The Power Producers Podcast, David Carothers and co-host Kyle Houck are joined by Crystal Ware. They discuss why having a clear vision and the right mindset is important, particularly for those in sales roles in the insurance industry.  Episode Highlights: Crystal mentions that the first thing people should concentrate on when they are unhappy is what they want out of life because once people are clear on their vision, the rest will fall into place. (2:28) According to Crystal, the vision is the image that someone has for their lives, but the mindset is how people get up every day ready to move toward their vision. (7:38) Crystal explains that we must retrain their minds if our natural condition is to be unhappy and whine about everything. (12:11) Kyle believes that having a mentor is helpful if you want to pursue something and have a clear goal in mind. (12:20) Crystal explains the distinction between a vision and a decision, and why the vision is important. (18:15) David believes that people must reflect in order to stay on track, but it is also part of their attitude to recognize the need for reflection and to go back and do it. (21:04) Crystal mentions that a person's perspective is ultimately what takes them from being good athletes, to great athletes, and world-class athletes. (23:57) David explains that when individuals have taken the effort to determine their objective and have a plan for how they want to achieve it, if that attitude is locked in, there's practically nothing that can stop them but themselves. (25:13) Tweetable Quotes: “The first thing people need to focus on when they're thinking about “my life sucks right now” is, “what do I actually want out of my life?”.” - Crystal Ware “The vision is really the image that you have for your life. Like, you know, I want to live in this kind of house, I want to live in the country…what is the picture you have of your life that's hanging on your wall that you can look at and say, “Wow, I love my life, I'm happy.” That's the vision. The mindset is how you wake up every day ready to achieve and move forward to your vision.” - Crystal Ware “Your mindset has to keep you moving forward, that what is on the other side is really more important than these really tough, difficult, you know, tumultuous feelings that I'm having inside right now.” - Crystal Ware Resources Mentioned: Crystal Ware LinkedIn Empower Benefits & Insurance Group Get Clear with Crystal Ware Podcast - Spotify David Carothers Kyle Houck Florida Risk Partners The Extra 2 Minutes

The sacred geometry of the vesica piscis is the two interlocking circles. The two becomes one and creates a sacred third, which is the center of the vesica piscis. That is a symbol that has been with us for millennia as a contemplation to the mystery. Flora Ware's work as a priestess is to serve that unity consciousness. The moving into the era of the feminine is about the sacred third, and the beginning of this era is seeing so much division and polarization that it needs to polarize so that opposites become as one. Flora is a Ceremonial Priestess, Cyclic Living Teacher and Sacred Musician who specializes in guiding women to come into harmony with sacred rhythms and express their magic. Through ceremonies, archetypal spirituality and embodiment practices, she helps women hear their soul's voice and awaken the Goddess within. Flora believes that our voices are magical instruments for healing and manifestation. In 2020, she released an album of pagan chants, Songs for the Wheel of the Year. Flora is deeply connected to her Celtic ancestral roots, having been on the path as a practicing witch since her first full moon women's circle in 1993. In addition to moon rituals and deep conversations with her soul sisters, Flora loves hiking, swimming, dancing, singing, and eating anything covered in pesto! The Dandelion Effect
A New Narrative for Healing Autism with Kara Ware

The Dandelion Effect

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 14, 2023 69:33 Transcription Available

Kara Ware has been on a 17-year journey with her son Zachary, who was diagnosed with Autism just before his third birthday. With this news came the advice from the doctor: “There is no treatment for Autism. Medicate him to help with tantrums, sign him up for speech therapy, take him home and keep him safe.” Suggestions like these are what more and more parents are hearing, as Autism diagnoses skyrocket: In 1975, 1 in 5,000 children were born with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and 1 in 36 children in 2016. Over the last decade in the U.S., the rate has been doubling every 3-4 years, and we are on target to experience 1 in 3 children with ASD by 2035, according to Dr. Zach Bush.WHY?This question became a beacon for Kara as she sat with her toddler, who was hitting his development milestones for almost three years then one day began regressing into pain, confusion and chaos that nobody could explain. She traveled the country, seeking out specialists and alternative practitioners, learning about the root causes of inflammation and toxicity that can lead to a person presenting with Autism symptoms. She was not ready to accept the status quo, and the long path she has walked with her son has resulted in not only the remission of Zachary's Autism symptoms, but a greater sense of health, joy and purpose in her own life as well. Her family is living proof that there is another way to approach this diagnosis–and that there's a bigger red flag in our lifestyles and environment that is begging to be noticed. Our changing planet is having drastic effects on human health and our species is facing unprecedented challenges. Autism is the canary in the coalmine. An invitation to look deeper into our history, our food, water, air, stress. When it's in the home, it's an invitation to explore the entire family ecosystem, rather than view the situation as an isolated issue for one person.Using the functional medicine model that she adopted, Kara outlines the steps to slowly and deliberately remove toxins from the body and home, deepen into family values and spiritual practices to pour energy into thoughts, words and emotions that are creating the environment for healing; and take simple steps with nutrition, supplementation, genetic testing and necessary medical interventions.Personally, Kara  is the healthiest and clearest she's ever been—and so is Zach. Professionally, she's using what she's learned to help doctors shift their conventional practices into functional medicine models and partner with patients for greater health education and lasting outcomes. She is also a board certified health coach, yoga teacher and host and producer of Good Medicine on the Go Podcast. And her new venture this year brings her full circle to helping families use their time, energy and resources wisely on the long journey of healing and living with Autism.Kara Ware WebsiteHope for Healing Family PediatricsSupport the showConnect with Feathered Pipe Ranch: FacebookInstagramSubscribe to our NewsletterCheck out 2023 Retreats

Summary Thomas Leahy (Website; LinkedIn) and Eleanor Williams (Website; Twitter) join Andrew to discuss the intelligence war during “the Troubles.” Thomas lives in Cardiff and Eleanor lives in Belfast.  What You'll Learn Intelligence The Troubles through the lens of intelligence Some key intelligence players in the Northern Ireland conflict How the IRA and the British Army adapted organizationally The role intelligence played in the end of the conflict Reflections The fluid nature of motivations and intentions How historic narratives shape and constrain the here-and-now And much, much more… Episode Notes From the late 60's to the late 90's Republican and Loyalist paramilitaries, and the British and Irish states, were engaged in a period known as “the Troubles”: a struggle to define or redefine the future of the island of Ireland. This is an issue with deep and complex roots, but the intelligence dimension of the period known as the Troubles is fascinating and often overlooked. To help us get our head around it all, Andrew sat down with two specialists to discuss all things intelligence and the Troubles: from the role that MI5 and MI6 played, to the Force Research Unit and the RUC Special Branch, through to how the IRA played the counterintelligence game and the role that informers, agents and moles, such as the notorious “Stakeknife,” played.  Thomas is the author of the Intelligence War Against the IRA, while Eleanor is a doctoral candidate comparing intelligence use during the Northern Irish and Colombian conflicts.  And… The head of the Republic of Ireland's police and security intelligence force, the Garda Síochána, is Drew Harris. Drew Harris was a career Royal Ulster Constabulary officer whose father, also a career RUC officer, was killed by the IRA in 1989. He was the first external appointee from outside the Garda. Quote of the Week "What's their [IRA] main role in this intelligence conflict?...one of the key points here…the IRA was quite highly regional regionalized. That's actually quite key to explain why British intelligence had some difficulties against them…Initially, it was set up similar to armed forces. It would have brigades, battalions and companies…the IRA operated this kind of army structure up to 1975…the IRA then switched to this new strategy…And part of this was to prevent mass infiltration, which had started to become a problem, particularly in Belfast pre-1975. So, what it adopted in Belfast and Derry was a cell structure." – Thomas Leahy Resources Books The Intelligence War Against the IRA, T. Leahy (CUP, 2020) Britain's Secret War Against the IRA, A.
