Alex and Evelyn repeat the now-annual tradition of recording the podcast in front of probably their entire active listener base. They are joined by David Thiel, Brian Fishman, and Daphne Keller, to say goodbye to Theirry Breton and RT's accounts on Meta, talk about Zuckerberg's retreat from politics, and all the developments in the land of the First Amendment and platform regulation.
Stanford's Evelyn Douek and Alex Stamos talk to Riana Pfefferkorn and David Thiel of the Stanford Internet Observatory about the technical and legal challenges of addressing computer-generated child sexual abuse material. One of the dark sides of the rapid development of artificial intelligence and machine learning is the increase in computer-generated child pornography and other child sexual abuse material, or CG-CSAM for short. This material threatens to overwhelm the attempts of online platforms to filter for harmful content—and of prosecutors to bring those who create and disseminate CG-CSAM to justice. But it also raises complex statutory and constitutional legal issues as to what types of CG-CSAM are, and are not, legal. To explore these issues, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota and Lawfare Senior Editor Alan Rozenshtein spoke with Riana Pfefferkorn, a Research Scholar at the Stanford Internet Observatory, who has just published a new white paper in Lawfare's ongoing Digital Social Contract paper series exploring the legal and policy implications of CG-CSAM. Joining in the discussion was her colleague David Thiel, Stanford Internet Observatory's Chief Technologist, and a co-author of an important technical analysis of the recent increase in CG-CSAM.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Stanford's Evelyn Douek and Alex Stamos weigh in on the latest online trust and safety news and developments:ActivityPub Hub A new Stanford Internet Observatory report by David Thiel and Renée DiResta found a significant issue with child abuse content in the largest decentralized social media communities that make up the Fediverse. They argue that current online safety tools must be adapted for decentralized social networks. - Cristiano Lima/ The Washington PostMeta's Threads announced future support for ActivityPub, the technical protocol that powers the Fediverse, but Alex doesn't think that will ever happen. - Casey Newton/ PlatformerInstagram's Adam Mosseri and his Threads communications team insist it's coming. - @threadsappSo what kind of trust and safety and legal headaches might this create? Alex has plenty of ideas. One consequence might be another boon for the booming trust and safety as a service industry. - Tim Bernard/ Tech Policy PressThat is, so long as “decentralized” doesn't become a synonym for “we don't need to invest in trust and safety.” Speaking of which, Bluesky finally responded to its failure to block usernames with racial slurs after weeks of controversy and radio silence. - Jay Graber/ BlueskyX Corner?!If you drink enough of the kool aid, eventually you spill a steady stream of corporate buzzwords when you find out your company was renamed to “X” overnight by your CTO. - @lindayaccShockingly, the company formerly known as Twitter continues to have “negative cash flow” and “heavy debt” as ad revenue drops 50%. - Amanda Macias, Lora Kolodny/ CNBC, Jahnavi Nidumolu, Krystal Hu/ ReutersMeanwhile, the “CEO” is trying to convince advertisers to come back while Bloomberg published an investigation into reports that hateful and harmful content has increased on Twitter since Elon Musk's acquisition last year, including SIO findings that known CSAM was appearing on the site. - Aisha Counts, Eari Nakano/ Bloomberg NewsThe reporting clearly got under the skin of Twitter's leadership team with a lengthy response from Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino with a whole bunch of unverifiable buzzwords about how the article was wrong. - @lindayaccCase in Point: “99.99% of Tweet impressions are healthy. And we're achieving this while defending our users' right to free speech.”The problem is that nothing is verifiable anymore since all the access to data for researchers has been cut off.TikTok CornerThe Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University brought a challenge on behalf a group of independent researchers and journalists, the Coalition for Independent Technology Research, challenging a Texas state government ban on accessing TikTok, arguing the law violates First Amendment rights by inhibiting academic freedom to research and teach about the popular social app at public universities. - Melissa Mahtani/ CNN, Sapna Maheshwari/ The New York Times, Talal Ansari/ The Wall Street Journal, Drew Harwell/ The Washington Post, Knight First Amendment InstituteThe flashy rollout of the European Union's Digital Services Act continues. Let's say you're a freedom-loving American fed up with Big Tech's effort to censor your posts. Where can you take your business? One option is Parler—the social media platform that became notorious for its use by the Capitol rioters. Another is Gettr—a new site started by former Trump aide Jason Miller.Unfortunately, both platforms have problems. They don't work very well. They might leak your personal data. They're full of spam. And they seem less than concerned about hosting some of the internet's worst illegal content. Can it be that some content moderation is necessary after all?Today, we're bringing you another episode of our Arbiters of Truth series on the online information ecosystem. Evelyn Douek and Quinta Jurecic spoke with David Thiel, the big data architect and chief technical officer of the Stanford Internet Observatory. With his colleagues at Stanford, David has put together reports on the inner workings of both Parler and Gettr. They talked about how these websites work (and don't), the strange contours of what both platforms are and aren't willing to moderate, and what we should expect from the odd world of “alt-tech.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

David Thiel is perhaps best known for his pinball audio work on titles such as Tron: Legacy, Alien, Dialed In, Avatar and Family Guy, but he was also responsible for everything aural on all the Golden Age Gottlieb classics (Q*Bert, Mad Planets, and Reactor to name but a few). From synth salesman to local rock star to Gottlieb and beyond (Commodore 64 and SID chip fans take note), David continues to produce outstanding interactive audio to this day.

Rudy begins the show teaching us about what it was like growing up in Havana Cuba after WWII in addition to what the world was like during that time. The type of music he grew up with, why he choose the guitar (Great answer!), how he learned to play and on what type of guitar! Learn how the early garage bands shaped him to who he is. Rudy tells when it went from rock to metal or was it always metal? There are musicians and professional musicians, but what does it take to be a pro, who awes Rudy these days, and what are the challenges of touring the world. Guarantee you will not guess this answer! How many times was Rudy with Quiet Riot? How do you learn the songs when you join a legacy band such as Ozzy or Whitesnake? Learn about sperm mode….Patreon Shout Outs to: Ralph Delligatti, Jeff Horaney, Craig Barlow, Missy Mital, David Thiel & Bret Juliano. What did Rudy learn from Randy Rhodes as well what he did for him? Did Rudy really go from sleeping on a floor to living with Ozzy & Sharon Osbourne? If the joy of playing was lost after the death of Randy Rhodes and if so, how did he get it back? Have you ever had to obey a rule and you wondered why the rule existed in the first place? Some may ask themselves: "What's the story behind the rule? What's the point of the rule anyway?" Paul is teaching the church in Galatia a very important lesson on what the Gospel is about. It's easy to lose track of the core message of the Good News when it's embedded in rules and regulations, even though the intentions may be good. Paul uses story-telling as a powerful tool to share the bottom-line of the Gospel to a community that was in danger of missing the point. For today that is important as well. It's not about "anything goes" nor is is it just about rules alone.
I had the pleasure of interviewing veteran performer David Thiel. We learn his origin story, his views on mentalism, magic, and performing as a business. Included is some great advice for those considering going pro and some tips for getting more work if you already are working professionally. Tony and Dennis are joined by Eric and Don to deep dive into the happenings at E3. Dennis starts the podcast solo, answering questions about the show and bypassing the typical introduction segment. Pinball: Dennis covers the pinball news alone, talking about Sandra Bullock wanting a Demolition Man pinball machine, Scott Danesi designing a second game for Spooky Pinball, Joe Schober joining American Pinball, and David Thiel becoming exclusive to deeproot Pinball. After the news, Tony joins the show and wraps up the results of The Worst of the Fall. Video Games: Tony and Dennis open with what they've been playing. After that, Eric and Don join as guests, and the rest of the episode is dedicated to E3, revolving around the announcements from the major press conferences (EA, Microsoft, Bethesda, Square Enix, Ubisoft, the PC Gaming Show, Sony, and Nintendo).

David Thiel, musician and interactive audio David Thiel is a musician and interactive audio designer. At Gottlieb, he did the sound for arcade games including Reactor, Q*Bert, and Mach 3. At Action Graphics, David created the sound for Artillery Duel for the Atari 2600, and Beamrider and Pitstop for the Atari computers. And at Free Radical Software/Incredible Technologies, he worked on Winter Games for the Amiga and Atari ST. He has created the sound and music for dozens of other computer games and pinball games. This interview took place on May 17, 2016. GDRI's list of David's games: http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/David_Thiel 2013 interview with David: http://www.c64.com/gt_display_interview.php?interview=31 Teaser quotes: "In coin op, I had a sound board. I had a processor. It's my sandbox, I can do anything I want. But the minute you're doing console work, you're now seen by the programmer as a parasitic element that eats CPU and storage, and poops out sound." "I think, ultimately, doing the Q*Bert voice was the finest destiny of that technology."
