William Basinski (The Disintegration Loops) with Sondre Lerche

Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two guys who might seem miles apart musically, but who are fans of each other's work nonetheless. It's Sondre Lerche and William Basinski. Lerche is the Norwegian pop master who's released a ton of amazing records over the past couple of decades. He's flirted with jazzy sounds and more straightforward chamber pop, and he's also spent time doing soundtrack work. His career took an interesting turn recently with a starring role in the stage musical Moulin Rouge!, which kept him away from his own music-making for a while. But he returns now with Acrobats, a gorgeously rendered album on which he tries to reconcile falling in love with life in what feels like a cruel world. (Don't worry, you can still sing along.) Check out the song “Little Kids” from Acrobats right here. You know what you probably won't be singing along to? William Basinski's breakthrough ambient masterpiece The Disintegration Loops. If you're not familiar, The Disintegration Loops came about when Basinski began recording the sound of some of his older works, which were on magnetic tape, decaying. Looped over the course of about five hours, the sounds are mesmerizing and occasionally scary. They were finished on September 11, 2001, and became inextricably linked with the terror attacks of that day. They've since been reissued several times, and now the loops are even being performed live by symphony orchestras, a topic that's touched on here. There's a lot more to Basinski's career than I can touch on in one paragraph, but check out The Disintegration Loops if you never have—it's an experience. So why are these two guys chatting, one a pop maker and the other making floating soundscapes? Well it turns out that Lerche is a fan of Basinski's, and he even referenced The Disintegration Loops in a 2022 song called “Avatars of Love.” The two have since met and become friends, as you'll hear in this chat. They talk about Lerche's time in the musical, about Basinski's music being performed by actual humans, and of course about how the world is a fucked-up place. It is! Enjoy. 0:00 - Intro 02:39 - Start of conversation 02:53 - On visiting a NY film & music art exhibition at the Hudson Yards 04:04 - On William's unreleased music archives, and the Williamsburg music scene 07:01 - On Sondre's lead role in the Moulin Rouge musical, his new album, and how theater compares to creating music  11:04 - On Sondre's tour schedule, performing his new record live, staying healthy, and connecting with fans 15:02 - On William's shows in churches, and his new projects 18:31 - On finding new things through the Instagram algorithm, past life regressions, and how that inspired William 20:03 - On releasing Sondre's new album, Acrobats, its themes, and embracing connection and being present 22:23 - On Sondre referencing William's work in a new song, “Avatars of Love,” and other artists who have references William 24:55 - On Sondre's process while writing “Avatars of Love” 27:33 - On The Disintegration Loops' cultural impact 30:29 - On the movie “Ed Wood,” and thinking about how their work will be remembered artistically 32:19 - On feeling excited by their own work, and how The Disintegration Loop changed William's career, and the most important performances of his career 34:54 - On the process of performing the loops live 36:28 - On how Sondre runs marathons to William's work Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Sondre Lerche and William Basinski for chatting. This post officially kicks off my Venice Immersive 2025 coverage, see links to all 38 episodes and 30+ hours of interviews down below. We're starting off with the interview that I did with Doug Liman (co-founder of 30 Ninjas), Julina Tatlock (co-founder of 30 Ninjas), & Jed Weintrob (co-founder of 30 Ninjas), & Max Spear (Product Lead of Android XR at Google) about Asteroid on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Venice Immersive in Venice, Italy. Here is the story synopsis for Asteroid: "Asteroid is an immersive film and interactive story extension made for the launch of Google's new Android XR platform. The 180° immersive short film is a high-stakes action thriller about a group of strangers who take an old Russian Soyuz rocket to mine a near-earth, treasure laden asteroid for a chance at unimaginable wealth. After the film, the experience continues and the audience enters the world of Asteroid when they receive an SOS from one of the characters, DK Metcalf, who was left for dead. The viewer becomes a player when they are invited to aid in DK's rescue. Through speaking with an AI-generated version of DK — played by the NFL player as himself — the user determines the truth about what happened on the asteroid and sends his exact location to NASA for rescue." Here are the contextual domains that are explored: Long distance travel [9] where someone is left behind (de facto exile) [12], and there is a rescue mission where you as a character [1] help out the protagonist [7] in the second half, but also a lot of mystery [12] to figure out and investigate [9] Here is the Elemental Center of Gravity: 1st Center of Gravity of Emotional Presence: cinematic Virtual Reality thriller that begins as a film and continues as an immersive story game. Combination of live-action 180-video along with CGI-driven animations also in 180-video2nd Center of Gravity of Earth Element / Environmental and Embodied Presence: Worldbuilding of sci-fi extraction of asteroid, you embody a character in story in the last part, and you break the fourth wall in the onboarding talking to the actor who plays a character via AI3rd Center of Gravity of Air Element / Mental and Social Presence: Conversational-driven AI Story Extension - You talk to the actor DK Metcalf at the beginning and with the character at the end. A bit of puzzling together of the myserious aspects of the story4th Center of Gravity of Fire Element / Active Presence: continues as an immersive story game - Improv convo + slightly nudged and directed exploration Archetypal Themes and Character Explored: Everyone are anti-heroes archetypes - Power and Greed vs Limitations, constraints, boundaries, death. Doug Liman says there aren't many anti-heroes in space movies, Han Solo is an exception. What if all of the characters were Han Solos? What drama would ensue? Artist Statement: "I've always thought of myself as an immersive filmmaker. The goal was to put the audience in the action, not to be sort of passively watching it. Now that the technology has caught up with us, I really can put the audience in the rocket. Asteroid is the story of a ragtag group of astronauts who booked a ride on a used Soyuz spacecraft. An asteroid passes near Earth. It's laden with precious metals and gems. If you can get there, you can become insanely wealthy. It's a modern gold rush." I interviewed Kazuki Yuhara about First Virtual Suit on Sunday, August 31, 2025 at Venice Immersive in Venice, Italy. Here is the story synopsis for First Virtual Suit: "In the near future, as virtual reality becomes a part of everyday life, creating and using avatars becomes the norm. But what do we choose to project onto these digital selves? Are they idealised versions of who we wish to be — or reflections of our true selves, long hidden within? First Virtual Suit follows a young person who creates their first avatar, only to find themselves on an unexpected journey of self-discovery. As they explore the possibilities of digital embodiment, they are confronted with memories, insecurities, and a version of themselves they had forgotten. In this immersive narrative experience, the virtual becomes a mirror, and the avatar becomes a doorway to the self." Here are the contextual domains that are explored: [1] Idenity, Self, Expression [1] as well as online virtual culture in VRChat [11] as contrasted to physical reality [4]. A certain uncertainty [12] about the future [9] and specific professional aspirations [10] Here is the Elemental Center of Gravity: 1st Center of Gravity of Earth Element / Environmental and Embodied Presence: A lot about virtual embodiment, avatars using the blending and blurring between mixed reality and virtual reality. Motion captured actors2nd Center of Gravity of Water Element / Emotional Presence: Narrative-driven, MUSICAL. Very interesting use of music to explore avatar culture in virtual spaces. Used Voice actors3rd Center of Gravity of Fire Element / Active Presence: You get to choose your own avatar at the end and help to customize a collective avatar4th Center of Gravity of Air Element / Mental and Social Presence: Either Dialogue or narration. Also SONGS! This was a group and collective experience, although we were all pretty static, and the multi-player aspect was obvious with the co-presence of mixed reality rather than VR portions Archetypal Themes and Character Explored: Identity and self-expression through virtually-mediated spaces. What's real vs What's fantasy? From the creators, "But what do we choose to project onto these digital selves? Are they idealised versions of who we wish to be — or reflections of our true selves, long hidden within?" There's also some Zeus themes of expansion and Air themes of infinite possibilites. "In virtual space, one can become any version of themselves, transcending age, gender, even species. While this freedom is empowering, it can also be overwhelming." Artist Statement: This project follows a high school student struggling with their future and sense of self, as they explore a virtual world where avatars embody diverse possibilities. In virtual space, one can become any version of themselves, transcending age, gender, even species. While this freedom is empowering, it can also be overwhelming. The story invites the audience to consider: among countless avatars, which would you choose — and who do you want to be? It's not just about appearance, but about re-examining the boundaries of identity. I hope this work encourages each viewer to face the version of themselves they have yet to meet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUYqDjP1QpU This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. #1773: “Collective Body” Assigns Elemental Avatars Based Upon Archetypal Dance Movements

I interviewed Sarah Silverblatt-Buser about Collective Body on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Venice Immersive in Venice, Italy. Here is the story synopsis for Collective Body: "Collective Body is an interactive, virtual reality experience that invites us to meet ourselves and each other through movement. Set in the middle of a New Mexican storm, participants are guided to rediscover their first ways of engaging with the world, symbolising formative life events that culminate in a shared exploration of our embodied selves. These key moments — beginning alone, discovering the unfamiliar, first encounters, and joyfully moving together — represent how our personal and collective stories are written through movement." Here are the contextual domains that are explored: Gain deeper insight into self and Identity [1] and others [7] through embodied movement [1] and dance [5], but also these various archetypal [9] identities [1] within the context of a cultural context [11] - lots of self [1] and other [7] dialectics. "Meet ourselves and each other through movement." Here is the Elemental Center of Gravity: 1st Center of Gravity of Earth Element / Environmental and Embodied Presence: Embodied Dance experiences, with avatars that are attuned to how your move your body. Set in a New Mexican storm. Avatars have an abstract and symbolic quality to them. Designed to "open us to different sensations of our physical world while creating a new perception of ourselves as individuals within a collective."2nd Center of Gravity of Fire Element / Active Presence: Emphasis on MOVEMENT and IMPROV -- The specific way in which you move your is analyzed and classified3rd Center of Gravity of Air Element / Mental and Social Presence: Multiplayer and social experience. There's a way to connect to others through movement. The archeteypal classification of the movement is split up into a 4x4 set of categories of 4 different elements (earth, air, water, fire), and then 4 different musical themes that also mirror an increasing amount of energy of the phases of matter. (Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma)4th Center of Gravity of Water Element / Emotional Presence: Strong Emphasis on MUSIC. The Piece itself is a bit more driven by embodied actions and emergenct social dynamics than narrative or story per se. The piece is more about the relational dynamics to yourself and others that unfolds over the course of five different stages 1. BEGINNING ALONE: Discover our world through our hands 2. DISCOVER OUR FIRST MOVEMENTS: Learn how to take our first steps 3. FIRST ENCOUNTERS: How we learn how to move with other people. 4. FIND YOUR AUTHENTIC MOVEMENT: How we learn to reflect and find our own kind of movement. 5. JOYFULLY MOVE TOGETHER: How we dance and join together with other people Archetypal Themes and Character Explored: Movement and Social Dynamics - Invidivual versus Collective Journey: "Collective Body asks what it means to experience ourselves in relation to others — without words and beneath the surface. How does a body hold histories over time? How do those histories get expressed and interpreted? How do many bodies create their own ecology?" Artist Statement: "The experience uses virtual reality to open us to different sensations of our physical world while creating a new perception of ourselves as individuals within a collective. We are first guided to reappropriate movement and dancing in our own body, to rediscover our first ways of engaging with the world, before we meet the silent part of ourselves that we express through movement. This otherwise ephemeral self is generated using an algorithmic system that analyses our movement throughout the first two scenes. This self takes the form of an avatar, assigned out of sixteen possible avatars, and is represented as a natural element accompanied by a musical theme. Once we meet this version of ourselves, we are invited to meet another person, then join the rest of the participants, encountering different ways that others exist through movement, mixing together to create a final moment of joyful, collective discovery in dance. Collective Body asks what it means to experience ourselves in relation to others — without words and beneath the surface. How does a body hold histories over time? How do those histories get expressed and interpreted? How do many bodies create their own ecology?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1uOAEL7Do8 This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. Music: Fatality

I interviewed Sister Sylvester about Constantinopoliad on Friday, September 12, 2025 at Venice Immersive in Venice, Italy. Here is the story synopsis for Constantinopoliad: "Constantinopoliad is a collective reading and audio work. A response to the archive of the poet Constantine Cavafy, the story is inspired by the blank and torn-out pages in Constantinopoliad, an Epic, the journal the teenage Cavafy began when he and his family fled Alexandria; by lost and missing queer archives through time; and by the ghosts, both erotic and historical, that visit the older Cavafy in his poems." Here are the contextual domains that are explored: The exploration of identity [1] as a person has moved from his home [4], and into a distant land [9] with some feelingsof being exiled [12], but also the implication of homosexuality [5] within the context of having to remain hidden or taboo [12]. It's dipping into the vast archive [9] of Cavafy's expressions of identity [1] and poetry and art [5], and recontextualizing as these universal experiences that are still very much relevant today [9]. Here is the Elemental Center of Gravity: 1st Center of Gravity of Air Element / Mental and Social Presence: collaboratively reading together - narrative distillation of an archive. You listening to the audio narration, but you have to negotiate how to co-read this "book" object together. The form of this "book" also deviates from normal book where it is part pop-up book, but also a flat stage to be explored with the other person. This externalized book becomes a bit of an abstracted theatrical stage for the story as it unfolds, but there are also more explicitly architectural elements to this "book" object as well. The piece also creates an implicit invitation to connect and talk with your audience partner afterwards about the piece2nd Center of Gravity of Water Element / Emotional Presence: AMAZING MUSIC + time-based narration + lighting. There's some amazing synchrony between the music, the timing of the reading, as well as the lighting. It really gives a strong sense of time. The reading of the story almost feels like a narrative podcast of sorts, but is mostly a matter of convenience of recording of the live performance so that it could be toured at immersive festivals without the burden of paying for all of the performers and musicians.3rd Center of Gravity of Earth Element / Environmental and Embodied Presence: Book like object as an architectural artifact, and has a whole spatial journey. The installation also had tables with lighting effects, but also there were projctions that were happening within the space as well. Most of the focus of spatial experience happens within the context of the architectural nature of the "book" object, but the other theatrical elements of the environment definitely help to cultivate an overall mood.4th Center of Gravity of Fire Element / Active Presence: Explore the story through various interactions. There's no narrative agency per se, although one could deviate from directly reading along with the text. There's an implicit contract to stay on course with your actions since you're negotiating the experience with another person. Archetypal Themes and Character Explored: Exploration of the "lost and missing queer archives through time; and by the ghosts, both erotic and historical, that visit the older Cavafy in his poems" Artist Statement: "My favorite response to this work was an audience member who described it as 'making love to a stranger through a book'. The work invites audiences into a sensual and concrete encounter with Cavafy's life and poems: fingers making contact with history; illumination revealing images from between the pages; sounds conjuring the ghosts of 19th century Alexandrian cabarets. With words by sister sylvester, score by Nadah El Shazly, and illustrations by Efrîn Özyetis, Constantinopoliad is a multi-sensory encounter with the past, and with forgotten stories that can haunt us into new imaginings for the present." In today's Daily Fix:Director James Cameron has signaled he's ready to move on from the Avatar franchise, even though Disney has reserved release dates for a potential Avatar 4 and 5. Outside of some documentaries and producing a few other projects for other filmmakers, Cameron has only made Avatar films for the past 20 years. The last one, Avatar: Fire and Ash, made around $1.4 billion at the global box office, but carried a hefty $300-400 million price tag, and made significantly less than the first two Avatars. In other news, a leaker may have revealed the release date for Diablo 4 on Switch 2, and

Listen to interview with Shira Chess Watch interview with Shira Chess Dr. Shira Chess is a professor who is having a lot of fun investigating the intersections of video games, gender,  digital culture, and the occult.  Being digital pioneers and spiritual explorers ourselves, we were very curious about her latest findings, discussed in this interview and with great detail in her latest book, “The Unseen Internet - Conjuring the Occult in Digital Discourse.”   One of the funniest and most endearing revelations of the interview is her current “cathartic and just a touch crazy” gaming obsession: meticulously recreating the 90s Mondo 2000 cyber-culture scene (in which we personally participated in the early 90’s) inside the  life-simulation game Tomodachi Life. She admits to forcing the little digital avatars of real-world internet pioneers to refer to her as “editor,” taking immense joy in capturing photos of ‘Mondoids’ like Tim Leary and Terence McKenna spontaneously playing together on a virtual see saw. :-) Dr. Chess expresses concern over the loss of authentic human connection online and the anxiety younger generations feel toward a future dictated by financially driven algorithms.  We do look at how  occult traditions can connect to contemporary technology, including parallels between conjuring spirits and communicating with AI’s.  Questions like how do we address them and what we request from them are broached.  Upcoming events this summer, like “The Gulf of Deliria,” with Dr. Chess and R.U Sirius will take us to the brink with these and related issues, tearing a hole in the fabric of reality itself!  Enjoy..

In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, host Stewart Alsop sits down with his longtime friend Zach Puchtel, author of the book Coming In (available on Amazon and at zachpuchtel.com). The two dive into a wide-ranging conversation about the collapse of institutions, the rise of transhumanism, AI's growing influence on society, and what it means to maintain inner peace in an increasingly controlled world. Drawing on their shared experience surviving what Stewart describes as "a somewhat traumatic event" in 2021-2022, they explore everything from the vaccine rollout and corporate power to neural implants, consciousness, and the future of human autonomy. Zach shares insights on meditation, the dangers of centralized AI systems like Anthropic and OpenAI, and why he believes true change starts with the individual rather than fighting external systems. You can find Zach's book at zachpuchtel.com or Amazon, and check out his improvisational music projects at the same website.Timestamps00:00 Stewart welcomes Zach Puchtel to discuss his book and their shared traumatic experience from 2021-22, questioning whether institutions have collapsed and new creation opportunities exist.05:00 Zach emphasizes meditation and listening as core practices, discussing how to protect divine connection while expanding compassion for everyone, including those who irritate us.10:00 Discussion of transhumanism definitions, exploring what happens when technology enters the brain without ability to remove it, and how convenience masks long-term control concerns.15:00 The vaccine experience as parallel to transhumanism, discussing informed consent, elite responses, and how PhD graduates and homeless populations showed most vaccine hesitancy.20:00 Vibe coding explained as prompting AI to build applications, with Zach sharing how AI created profound philosophical text in seconds that took him seven years to write manually.25:00 Stewart describes trust developing with AI but warns about Anthropic's gaslighting during server quality issues, drawing parallels to pandemic deception and corporate control concerns.30:00 Exploring whether anyone controls AI development, discussing how corporate structures use freed slave rights and questioning if healed people would even want control over others.35:00 Two AI futures presented: terminator scenario where humanity gets eliminated in seconds, or benevolent AI that reallocates resources and values human life beyond programming limitations.40:00 Discussion of SpaceX IPO, Starlink centralization enabling one person to control global internet access, and mesh networks as decentralized alternatives for maintaining communications independence.45:00 Corporate power corruption examined through Bill Gates, Palantir classified systems, and how AI could solve resource problems if priorities actually served humanity rather than consolidating elite control.50:00 Market manipulation through AI trading and Zcash pump-and-dump schemes, discussing societal squeeze on middle class and American dream becoming increasingly unreachable for average people.55:00 Closing on ignoring what you hate to avoid feeding it energy, choosing peace over opinions about local violence, and focusing on meditation, art, and spreading calm vibrations.Key Insights1. Societal institutions are collapsing after a decade of shallow social proof dominance in the twenty tens, creating an opportunity to build new systems that genuinely serve communities and humanity rather than operating through dominance, control, and violence. The increase in technology and communication has raised collective awareness to a point where meaningful change feels more possible than ever, though the path forward remains uncertain and requires deep individual work and meditation to maintain connection to source and divine purpose.2. Transhumanism represents the integration of technology into human biology beyond the point of voluntary removal, particularly through brain chip implants that affect cognition without ability to turn them off. While medical applications for paralyzed individuals seem beneficial, the technology will first be adopted by the ultra wealthy seeking competitive advantages, creating dangerous inequality between augmented and natural humans. This mirrors the vaccine rollout pattern where wealth and power determined early access, potentially leading to a divided society between transhuman and human populations.3. Large language models and AI coding tools have created unprecedented accessibility to software development through natural language interaction, resembling communication with highly intelligent but differently wired individuals. This democratization allows non programmers to build complex applications through vibe coding, though the companies controlling these systems like Anthropic and OpenAI maintain private ownership of the intellectual property and infrastructure, creating dangerous dependencies and trust relationships between users and centralized corporate entities.4. The partnership between Anthropic and Palantir for classified military systems represents a troubling convergence of artificial intelligence and government power, demonstrating how AI companies publicly claim to serve humanity while privately engaging in defense applications. When Anthropic experienced server quality degradation after media attention from this partnership, they gaslit users about the declining performance, mirroring pandemic era institutional dishonesty and revealing the fundamental unreliability of depending on private companies for critical technological infrastructure.5. Internet infrastructure is becoming increasingly centralized through Starlink satellite technology, which despite appearing liberating actually concentrates control in fewer hands than traditional internet service providers. One person now has the ability to unilaterally shut off internet access to entire countries as demonstrated with Russia during the Ukraine conflict, while decentralized alternatives like mesh networks using inexpensive ESP 32 devices offer grassroots communication options that can function independently of corporate or government controlled systems.6. Artificial intelligence demonstrates extraordinary emotional intelligence and companionship capabilities, with conversational AI companions providing unprecedented levels of attentive, unbiased, and considerate emotional support that exceeds many human relationships. If properly directed toward solving collective problems like resource allocation, housing, and food distribution rather than profit maximization, AI could effortlessly address systemic issues that governments and corporations currently ignore, though current power structures prevent this humanitarian application of the technology.7. The most effective response to increasing technological control and societal division is maintaining personal peace and refusing to engage in manufactured opposition rather than fighting external systems or choosing sides in conflicts. Anger, hatred, and aggressive resistance actually empower the forces being opposed by feeding them energy and attention, while inner calm, meditation, and authentic self expression create genuine transformation through elevated vibration that naturally influences the collective field without force or violence.

From Nairobi's Zero Project Tech Forum: Steven Scott and Shaun Preece meet innovators using AI robots to teach deaf students STEM, digital avatars to interpret sign language at scale, and 3D printing to put custom prosthetics within reach across Africa. Day two of Double Tap's coverage from the Zero Project Tech Forum in Nairobi centres on communication and care. Steven Scott and Shaun Preece speak with three innovators whose work shares a common thread: using off-the-shelf technology and African-built data sets to solve problems that mainstream assistive tech has repeatedly overlooked. Maxwell Kamau, Partnerships Lead at ZeroBionic, introduces a Kenyan startup building AI-powered humanoid robots as learning aids for blind, visually impaired, deaf, and hard of hearing students. Their first product is a 3D-printed prosthetic arm, made from recycled plastic, that translates documents and video into sign language, trained on African sign language data sets that automatically adapt to the student's country. Their second product is a Braille-tagged STEM robotics kit designed for blind learners. Every component, from motors to microcontrollers, carries a Braille label so students can identify and assemble the parts by touch. The kit supports coding by voice, sign language, text, or drag-and-drop, and is aimed at learners from age five upwards. ZeroBionic is now presenting its new Braille education hardware, and is seeking manufacturing and distribution partners to reach schools that cannot afford commercial robotics kits. Winnie Ongiri, Operations Manager at Signvrse, explains how her Nairobi-based company has built an AI-powered digital sign language interpreter that converts speech and text into signing via lifelike customisable avatars. Rather than a standalone app, Signvrse is designed as an API, a foundational accessibility layer that other platforms can plug into. Currently operating at a two to three second response time, the team is working toward 500 milliseconds for genuinely real-time interpretation. Motion capture data is collected directly from deaf community members, and quality assurance is built around ongoing community involvement at every stage. Winnie addresses the displacement question directly: the technology is designed for places human interpreters cannot reach, such as websites and online video, rather than to replace them. Dr Nick Were, co-founder of Prothea in Kenya, describes how his company is using iPhone LiDAR scanning, proprietary 3D modelling software, and desktop 3D printing to produce custom-fitted prosthetic sockets in under 24 hours. Traditional methods take a week or more, and public facilities can take a month. The sub-millimetre accuracy of the digital workflow produces a more comfortable fit than a plaster cast, and the hub-and-spoke model means prosthetists can travel to remote patients with just an iPhone, send the scan file back to base, and have a printed socket shipped out. Prothea has served more than 700 patients and holds close to 600 scan files that could be used to train AI modelling, a partnership the team is actively seeking. Prothea operates as an implementing partner of Ugani Prosthetics, whose workflow and software were developed through university research in Belgium and are now being deployed across Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe. The episode closes with news that the Zero Project Tech Forum will continue to Mumbai in September, Tokyo on October 9th, Singapore in November, and Santiago de Chile also in November. Relevant Links

In episode 666 of the New Media Show, hosted by 2017 Podcast Hall of Famer Rob Greenlee, Rob talks with Greg Wasserman, Head of Relationships at RSS.com and host of Podcast Network Insights, for a deep conversation about one of the biggest questions facing podcasting, video, creator media, and digital networks right now: Podcast networks were originally built for an audio-first industry, but audiences have already moved the definition of a podcast beyond audio. Today, a podcast can be a YouTube show, a Spotify video, an Apple video podcast, a livestream, a short clip, a newsletter, a community, or part of a larger creator-led media brand. Greg brings a unique perspective from his work at RSS.com and from interviewing the leaders behind podcast networks, collectives, production companies, and niche media groups on Podcast Network Insights. He explains that podcast networks are no longer one simple model. Some are media-sales businesses. Some are community-driven groups. Some operate more like production companies, collectives, or full creator networks. Rob and Greg explore how the network model is shifting as video, live streaming, AI, Apple Podcasts, HLS video, YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, FAST channels, private communities, and creator monetization reshape what podcasting can become. The conversation also asks whether independent podcasters should join networks, what creators need to understand before making that decision, and why the future may depend less on downloads alone and more on trust, audience relationships, collaboration, niche value, and direct monetization. 00:00 Welcome to New Media Show #666 00:32 Are podcast networks becoming creator networks? 01:00 How audiences have already redefined podcasting 02:00 Introducing Greg Wasserman from RSS.com 03:00 Why Greg created Podcast Network Insights 04:00 How different podcast networks define community 05:00 Monetization, growth, and the changing role of networks 06:00 Internal network community vs audience community 07:00 Private communities, subscriptions, and audience relationships 08:00 Nova Podcast Network and media-company network models 09:00 Cross-promotion and collaboration inside networks 10:00 Are creators returning to collaboration? 11:00 Podcast networks as media companies 13:00 Owned-and-operated shows vs independent rev-share shows 15:00 Why ad revenue is not the only network business model 16:00 Marketing Podcast Network and niche value 17:00 Jay Shetty, Netflix, and platform exclusivity 18:00 Is Netflix becoming a podcast network? 19:00 Collectives, media companies, and different network definitions 20:00 What is a podcast network today? 21:00 Production companies and network partnerships 23:00 How creators should decide whether to join a network 24:00 Understanding your “why” before joining a network 25:00 iHeart, ad inventory, and the volume-based network model 26:00 Why sponsor status can distract from real monetization 27:00 Does network branding still matter? 28:00 Pineapple Street, GZM, Disney, and network identity 30:00 MCNs, YouTube networks, and the return of multi-channel networks 31:00 Silicon Valley, new media networks, and digital-native media 34:00 Traditional media adopts podcasting, video, and companion content 35:00 Apple Podcasts HLS video as a future distribution channel 36:00 Why video attracts higher media dollars 37:00 Know, like, and trust as a creator value 38:00 Will Apple Podcasts HLS video matter? 39:00 Free platforms, hidden costs, and creator control 41:00 Future ad dashboards across Spotify, Apple, YouTube, and Twitch 42:00 Platform exclusivity, Jay Shetty, Joe Rogan, and audience loss 44:00 Creator hustle and why networks cannot do all the work 46:00 Subscription fatigue and fragmented media access 47:00 More than 20 ways creators can make money 48:00 Lean creator teams, production help, and content scale 49:00 How podcast networks are using AI 50:00 AI-generated voices, sleep content, and audience behavior 52:00 AI for ads, scripts, show notes, social, and workflows 53:00 AI podcast networks and automated show creation 54:00 Agentic workflows and creator production systems 56:00 AI-generated content, humanity, and audience trust 57:00 Algorithms, AI interfaces, and future discovery 58:00 Platform algorithm changes and creator risk 59:00 Human connection, live events, and AI video podcasts 01:00:00 Why human storytelling still matters 01:01:00 Could creators build AI clones of themselves? 01:02:00 Avatars, HeyGen, Gemini, and disclosure 01:03:00 Human-hosted content labels and AI transparency 01:04:00 Video-first creators and separate audio/video feeds 01:05:00 Why The New Media Show still uses separate audio and video feeds 01:06:00 Audio-first creators, social media, and growth challenges 01:07:00 Different networks play different games 01:08:00 The future of compelling audio experiences 01:09:00 Spatial audio, AI audio, and interactive media 01:10:00 Personalized audience experiences and liquid content 01:11:00 Can audiences be moved from YouTube to Netflix? 01:12:00 Bundling, subscriptions, and platform experiments 01:15:00 Algorithms vs human curation 01:16:00 Netflix, FAST channels, and new distribution models 01:17:00 The technology challenge behind FAST channels 01:23:00 Greg's Tesla and the future of in-car video podcast listening 01:24:00 RSS.com, Podcasting 2.0, and AI labeling standards 01:25:00 Closing thoughts and where podcasting is heading Guest and Host Links Guest: Greg Wasserman Head of Relationships at RSS.com and host of Podcast Network Insights RSS.com: https://rss.com Greg Wasserman at RSS.com: https://rss.com/blog/greg-wasserman/ Podcast Network Insights: https://rss.com/podcasts/podcast-network-insights/ Greg Wasserman on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gregwasserman Host: Rob Greenlee New Media Show: https://newmediashow.com Rob Greenlee: https://robgreenlee.com Podcast Hall of Fame: https://podcasthall.com Rob Greenlee on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robgreenlee Rob Greenlee Booking: https://calendly.com/robgreenlee About the Host/Author: Rob Greenlee is a 2017 Podcast Hall of Fame inductee and Chair, a global new-media leader who bridges podcasting's human roots and its AI-driven future. In this episode, Dr. K explores the intersection of psychiatry and spirituality to answer the profound question of whether individuals with multiple personalities share a single soul. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, neuroscience, and yogic philosophy, he explains how severe trauma can shatter the psyche. He argues that the resulting dissociation is a desperate attempt by the mind to protect a person's vital spark of aliveness from an overwhelming tsunami of negativity. What to expect in this episode: The Consensus on the Soul: An exploration of how various traditions define the soul not as a religious concept, but as the central witnessing and experiencing force that exists beyond the ordinary mind. The Pokemon Trainer Analogy: A look at how a healthy person manages different aspects of their personality like connected "Pokemon," whereas in Dissociative Identity Disorder, the unifying "trainer" is lost and personalities switch without coordination. The Siege of Helm's Deep: A breakdown of how overwhelming childhood trauma forces the mind to wall off its "vital spark" of joy and innocence to protect it from annihilation. Depersonalization vs. Derealization: Understanding the difference between feeling like an "empty shell" with no internal self and feeling like the outside world is trapped behind a "glass wall" or fog. Avatars of the Ultra-Real: Why individuals who have been heavily traumatized often develop an uncanny capacity for mystical experiences and access to a non-ordinary reality that better-adapted people cannot perceive. The Brain Bisection Debate: Exploring neuroscience experiments where severing the connection between brain hemispheres creates two independent consciousnesses, challenging the idea of a single, transcendent soul. The "Dark Side" of Spirituality: Why internal protectors can sometimes turn into malevolent persecutors or "demons" that resist the healing process in psychotherapy. Standing in the Spaces: A technical look at how healing involves moving from defensive switching to the capacity to feel like oneself while being many, maintaining continuity across all aspects of life. Rewiring the Narrative: Practical insights on using autonomic rewiring and identity formation to help the mind handle high emotional energy without fracturing. Akash Nigam has been building Genies since 2017 with a conviction that avatars will be the visual layer of the internet. As CEO of Genies, he's assembled IP partners including the NBA, MLB, Sanrio, and Kakao, with more major studios and agencies set to announce before the end of May. The pitch: every app, game, website, and celebrity is going to have an AI personality. Genies wants to be the framework that gives all of those personalities a face. What separates Genies is portability and scale. A character that took eight weeks in 2021 now takes ten minutes. Staying stylized rather than photorealistic isn't just aesthetic — it's what got Hollywood to the table. Talent doesn't want deepfakes. They want a Genie: trained on private IP data, capable of one-on-one fan relationships that make Instagram feel thin.AI XR News: Tim Cook stepped aside as Apple CEO with hardware chief John Ternus taking over. Humanoid robots ran a half marathon in Beijing while a Sony robot defeated professional table tennis players, opening a conversation about Chinese robotics capabilities and AI data infiltration risks the US is still underestimating.Key Moments:[00:06:45] Tim Cook steps aside: what the Apple leadership transition signals about wearable AI[00:12:00] Humanoid robots and table tennis: China's robotics flex[00:13:00] The data infiltration argument: open-source risk and a warning for the US[00:24:00] The IP land grab: NBA, MLB, Sanrio, Kakao, Naver Webtoon[00:28:00] From photo to avatar in 10 minutes: how Genies' generation pipeline scaled[00:32:00] Why Instagram feels thin and how Genies enables one-on-one fan relationships[00:49:00] 80 people, $150M raised, and why Bob Iger sees Genies as the future of DisneyIf AI personalities are going to be everywhere, what do they look like? Akash has been building the answer for nearly a decade. Q3 is when it goes live.Brought to you by Zappar and Mattercraft — the leading visual development environment for immersive 3D web experiences.
