Taking culture apart, one episode at a time. A fearless look at pop culture, fashion, film and music.
Troy and Rick take a break from research and writing to talk fun stuff. This includes Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne and Uzo Aduba in Mrs. America, telling us the story of the ERA’s early days. And while we’re stuck at home, working in front of our screens, Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara and Shangela lead us on a field trip through America’s small towns to preach the healing power of drag in We're Here. Purse first! Poet John Ashbery and activist Barbara Gittings are this episode’s Relevant Queers.Find The Relevant Queer onImage Amplified,Instagram,Facebook, andTwitter.
With everything going on in the world, Troy and Rick have taken some time to process it all. Black Lives Matter, police brutality, the coronavirus, and social distancing. Yeah, it's been a minute. Troy and Rick are trying to get their heads around what life in 2020 looks like. There's nothing nonchalant about it.
This week Jean drops in (via FaceTime) to describe what her experience with social distancing has been like. She works for a hospital in Baltimore, Maryland but for the past ten days, she's been working from home. Oh yeah, she's started watching Drag Race too! (Spoiler alert: she's no fan of either Brita or Aiden!).In the meantime, when not trying to get some research done, Troy's been finding time for Switch games Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Kentucky Route Zero.
Snatched.Just ask Gigi Goode. There are two moments every Drag Race contestant should prepare for: Snatch Game and that unfortunate time when they have to lip sync to stay in the game. Can we please remind the girls that the command, "lip synch for your life," means you should actually put in an effort. Two weeks' of limp lips do not for great entertainment make.
"Gay's Anatomy" had nothing on the backstage drama between Aiden Zhane and every other girl. Raise your hand if you're impressed by Brita. Nobody? The shade.

Can we please have Leslie Jones every week? She brought the comedy and wouldn't let up. She was essentially all of us, the fan who made it onto the set.And Gigi? She must be a top contender at this point. She's a triple threat: brains, beauty, and talent. We're glad to see a deserving winner this week. But it still stings to see any queen go home while She-who-shall-not-be-named continues to haunt the show.

"World's Worst"… possibly. The winner? We're not saying. In fact, we'll be trying not to say the name of She-who-shall-not-be-named, for the season. We weren't sad to see the eliminated girl sashay away, either.Who was judging this week? There was Michelle, Ross and Carson. Oh and the brilliant Charo! And there was Vivacious. Wasn't there someone else? Wait, wait, let us try to remember. Oh yeah, Olivia Munn. Meh.
Like most everyone else concerned with limiting the spread of the coronavirus, Troy and Rick are adjusting to living with social distancing. That means relying on the Internet, news and social media to make sense of what's going on. Troy wonders how the pandemic will impact his research. Controversy! Drag is all about crushing boundaries, but one contestant has obviously crossed the line. Now we're forced to choose. Either to tolerate her throughout the season or ignore the hard work the other girls have put into the competition. Congrats to Jaiden Essence Hall to taking the night. We’re also loving Rock M. Sakura and Aiden Zhane. So nice to have Ross Matthews back! We’re feeling a bit sorry for Robyn and Thandie Newton, though. As good as they were, Nicki Minaj is an impossible act to follow.
This week Troy and Rick catch up on the series Shrill, the movie The Lighthouse and seeing Bianca Del Rio at the Jamie stage door. They also talk about their work on Relevant Queer. This week they researched the lives of actress Mlle Raucourt, the poet Emilio Prados, and director Pier Paolo Pasolini.Click for more on Relevant Queer at Image Amplified.Find us on social media:Destroyed Nonchalance InstagramDestroyed Nonchalance at Image AmplifiedTroy on InstagramRick on Instagram

This leads the discussion into studying fashion as a practice. What does practicing fashion mean? Who does it? Why? Troy suggests that understanding fashion as a practice emphasises fashion's relation to the body and our social worlds.Find us on Instagram at[Destroyed Nonchalance (@destroyed_nonchalance) • Instagram photos and videos](https://www.instagram.com/destroyed_nonchalance/?hl=en)[Troy Wise (@ia_troy_wise) • Instagram photos and videos](https://www.instagram.com/ia_troy_wise/?hl=en)[Rick (@5by5forever) • Instagram photos and videos](https://www.instagram.com/5by5forever/?hl=en)

Building on that, Serena reinforces the need for choosing our media sources carefully. Meanwhile, Troy calls for being mindful that the impact of mediatization is shaped by our being both consumers and creators of media content.
After discussing identity for the past couple of weeks, Troy, Rick and Serena introduce the topic of mediatization. Rick admits confusing mediation through digitization, with the cultural impact of mediatization. Troy discusses the idea of mediatized worlds, expanding the relevance of mediatization beyond digital culture and politics, by emphasizing the role of audience engagement across all forms of media.
