Before cementing her status as a bonafide comedic talent, Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Neighbors) was known for dramatic roles. The Australian actor combines those skills in the tense comedy-drama, If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, for which she just won a Golden Globe. During last year's Toronto International Film Festival, Rose sat down with Tom Power to discuss the film and what it was like co-starring with Conan O'Brien in his first serious acting role. She also told us how she broke out of her shell as a shy kid, how she and Heath Ledger helped each other out as young Australians in Hollywood, and what she thinks about her one line from Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones.
Lauren's guest is Who What Wear co-founder, Future Publishing S.V.P., and Substacker Hillary Kerr. They discuss the best and worst of the Golden Globes red carpet, and what the lineup portends about the rest of the awards season, and the fashion industry at large. They also get into the Guccissance and the future of Saks Global. Mentioned in this episode: Dior, Chanel, Rose Byrne, Matthieu Blazy, Jessie Buckley, Valentino, Colman Domingo, Teyana Taylor, Schiaparelli, Jonathan Anderson, Kate Young, Jamie Mizrahi, Mia Goth, Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Hastings, Justine Lupe, Rebecca Ramsey, and plenty of other fashion people. On episode 322 of the AwardsWatch podcast, Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson is joined by Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Mark Johnson, aka The Awards Alchemist, to give their predictions for the upcoming Critics Choice Awards taking place on January 4, 2026. Recording the day after Christmas, the trio give a short version of their holiday experience (wine, so much wine) and then jump right into predicting who they think will be the winners of the 31st Critics Choice Association Awards, as well as reveal what some of our own votes were, including some races that feel very close. With Critics Choice happening a full week before the Golden Globes, will the group rely on being Oscar predictors or tastemakers as the first televised org of the season? While it feels like it's a head to head fight between One Battle After Another and Sinners in many categories--all of which is great for Warner Bros--some categories could be the beginning of a season-long coronation, like Amy Madigan vs Teyana Taylor in Best Supporting Actress and Jessie Buckley vs Rose Byrne in Best Actress. Best Actor could be a threeway race between Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael B. Jordan, although we're seeing Chalamet triumph here. This podcast runs 1h26m. We'll be back soon with a Best of 2025 wrap-up. Till then, let's get into it. What stories do the 2026 Golden Globe nominations tell? "Wicked: For Good" couldn't get a nomination for best motion picture-musical or comedy. Timothée Chalamet might be an Oscar favorite for his performance in "Marty Supreme." Rose Byrne could be someone to watch for best actress thanks to a strong effort in "If I Had Leg's I'd Kick You." Jeremy Allen White probably won't win a pair of best actor awards, but he did score nominations for his film portrayal of Bruce Springsteen as well as his series "The Bear." Regardless of what happens, we did get a bit of a sneak preview into what might get love when Oscar nominations come on Jan. 22. We also discuss season 2 of "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" on Disney+. Bruce Miller has multiple interviews with the stars, including Walker Scobell (Percy Jackson), Dior Goodjohn (Clarisse La Rue), Charlie Bushnell (Luke Castellan), Daniel Diemer (Tyson), Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth Chase) and Aryan Simhadri (Grover Underwood). This 2018 Dramedy stars Mark Wahlberg, Rose Byrne, Isabela Merced, Octavia Spencer and Tig Notaro. We deep dive into the lives of two DINK, house flippers who have decided that what they need in life is... Chaos. Coming from 2 parents, going from 0 kids to 1 kid is rough. Going from 0 kids to 3 kids overnight is insanity. Throw in the fact that you skip a bunch of years and they already have personalities that you don't know. Not just that, but these kids have had it ROUGH, so they're understandably a little skeptical. Parenting can be challenging, foster parenting is a gauntlet.
Rose Byrne plays a mother on the verge of a breakdown in 'If I Had Legs I'd Kick You' — she breaks down her performance in the psychological dramedy, which is already picking up a lot of honors this awards season. Her patients have their own issues, and sometimes they don't grasp the meaning of "boundaries." And her relationship with her own therapist/co-worker, who's played by Conan O'Brien, is… messy. And that's only the beginning.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I Would Kick You, Damages, Neighbors) is an Emmy Award-nominated actor. Rose joins the Armchair Expert to discuss being rejected from every drama school she applied to in Australia, not having the confidence to discern between early roles, and whether she identifies as a people pleaser. Rose and Dax talk about playing the straight man in Bridesmaids, getting into a loose comedic rhythm with longtime collaborator Seth Rogan, and her improv baptism by fire making Get Him to the Greek. Rose explains how much she enjoys seeing a comedic actor do a dramatic part, accepting as she gets older that we all need to dance around the apartment more, and throwing herself deeply into her grueling new film If I Had Legs I Would Kick You.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. In this episode of the No Film School Podcast, GG Hawkins speaks with writer-director Mary Bronstein about her searing psychological comedy-drama If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You. The film, starring Rose Byrne, Conan O'Brien, Christian Slater, and A$AP Rocky, explores the emotional breakdown of a woman navigating a mysterious illness in her child, an absentee husband, and a dangerously dependent relationship with her therapist. Premiering at Sundance and earning Rose Byrne a Silver Bear at Berlinale, the film has received critical acclaim for its raw emotional honesty and darkly comedic tone. Mary shares her deeply collaborative process with actors—particularly Byrne—and how performance, not just plot or technique, is the true core of her work. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guest Mary Bronstein discuss... Mary's non-traditional journey into directing via acting and method training Why understanding acting is essential for directors The intense six-week collaborative prep process Mary and Rose Byrne underwent to develop the character of Linda How Mary tailors her directing style to unlock emotionally raw, performance-driven cinema The importance of maintaining artistic integrity over commercial conformity Why most screenwriting classes and formatting “rules” are, in Mary's words, “bullshit” The difference between directing for performance versus directing for aesthetics Mary's perspective on the resurgence of a new indie golden age Memorable Quotes: "If your performances are shit, your movie is shit to me." (12:49) "By the time we get to set, there is nothing you could do that would be wrong." (30:34) "My struggle is a creative one, not a commercial one." (42:08) "You don't wait for permission." Before cementing her status as a bonafide comedic talent, Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Neighbors) was known for more dramatic roles. Now, the Australian actor is combining those skills in the new comedy-drama, “If I Had Legs I'd Kick You.” During this year's Toronto International Film Festival, Rose sat down with Tom Power to discuss the film and what it was like co-starring with Conan O'Brien in his first serious acting role. She also told us how she broke out of her shell as a shy kid, how she and Heath Ledger helped each other out as young Australians in Hollywood, and what she thinks about her one line from “Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones.”
The Aussie actress reflects on what she learned from her years working alongside Glenn Close on 'Damages'; how she and the industry discovered her comedic side, leading to memorable turns in 'Bridesmaids,' 'Spy' and other projects; and the the unique challenges and rewards of her latest film, in which she plays a woman whose life is literally and figuratively crashing down around her.
