We have a double whammy of guests this week as Adrian Dunbar joins us to chat Ridley on ITV. Plus Paul Wesley chats to us about returning to the bridge as Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Meanwhile, Scottish shagfest Outlander gets a spinoff series with highland origin story Blood Of My Blood on MGM+, and Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne return for another round of Platonic on Apple TV+. And, for reasons that aren't entirely clear, we open the Pilot TV agony aunt column.
Kim Masters speaks to Platonic co-creators Francesca Delbanco & Nicholas Stoller about what inspired their show about the comedy and complications of grown-up friendships. They talk about the challenge of writing characters—played by Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen—with none of the underlying sexual tension that has propelled so many television comedies to success. They also remember the time that Netflix boss Ted Sarandos sat through a lengthy table read of their first series, Friends from College. Plus, as FCC Chairman Brendan Carr ramps up scrutiny of major media players, Comcast’s NBCUniversal appears to be his latest target. Is the company’s cable spinoff Versant a calculated play to dodge the Trump administration’s media witch hunt? Kim Masters and Lucas Shaw dig in.
With the new season of Platonic dropping next week, we had to bring in Seth Rogen and proud Aussie Rose Byrne to give us a sneak peek at what’s in store before Rose opens up about a surprising injury of her own... Our latest Franchise Addicts episode is out now! This time, Luke and Chris wade into the chaotic, bleaker-than-ever sequel 28 Weeks Later. We dig deep on:✅ That controversial opening scene✅ How the franchise takes shortcuts (for better or worse)✅ Don's betrayal—cowardice or survival?✅ The military's hard-line “solution”✅ Robert Carlyle's scenery-chewing✅ Rose Byrne and Jeremy Renner before the big Marvel checks✅ The ending that hints at global doom
Bonnie Rose started her professional career as a stand-in for Bette Midler on “First Wives Club.” Next up, the iconic and legendary film director Sidney Lumet hand picked her for the feature film “Night Falls On Manhattan,” playing a New York City cop opposite Andy Garcia, which led to many other Lumet projects over the next decade including a recurring role as a legal aid attorney on the TV legal drama “100 Centre St.” Bonnie's massive credits in television and film include “Inside Llewyn Davis,” Marvel's “Jessica Jones,” “Mr. Robot,” “Blue Bloods,” “Broad City,” “The Sopranos,” and the trifecta of all “Law & Orders.” She recently won Best Actress at three different film festivals for her role in Finise Avery's short film “Living with Grandma.” She also appears opposite Rose Byrne in Stephanie Laing's feature film “Tow,” which just made its World Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival. On this episode, Rose talks about the child-like enthusiasm which fuels her work, what it means to “right-size yourself,” why having only one line is sometimes harder than having many lines, bravely (and hilariously) tackling nudity in her mid-fifties, the importance of always letting gratitude lead the way, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram
Ryan and Dylan finally watch 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later just in time for the highly anticipated release of 28 Years Later, and review all three films.
Send us a textThis week, on our 108th episode of Fabulous Film & Friends we're looking at Danny Boyle's 2025 summer entry 28 Years Later as well as the two other films that led up to it, 2002's 28 Days Later and 2007's 28 Weeks Later. Mr. Boyle directed the segments one and three, and the second entry was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, The stars of the first movie were Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleason, Megan Burns and Christopher Eccelson. The second movie was a regular who's who of up-and-comers from 2007: Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Imogen Poots, Idris Elba, Harold Perrineau with veteran support from Catherine McCormack and Robert Carlysle while the 3rd film is a mix of old pro and newcomers with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connell and Ralph Fiennes as supporting players to fresh faced star of the tomorrow Alfie Williams! My solitary guest this week is the mighty Joe Field, author, teacher and pop culture enthusiast. The 28 Days Later trilogy's story unfolds as follows:Zombies Zombies and more Zombies! The first movie tracks the origin of a primate based virus and how it decimates England and turns its population into cannibalistic raging savages within 28 Days. Only a lone bike messenger freshly awakened from a coma and a few other scrappy survivors are able to navigate the treacherous countryside to supposed safety of a military outpost. The underachieving sequel is basically the military versus zombies where the virus has been eradicated due to the infected starving to death, but the virus returns with a vengeance when an asymptomatic mother releases it on her cowardly husband who left her to die during the first outbreak. And the third movie, taking place 28 Years after that, deals with a post-apocalyptic human society living on a small island in Scotland. The islanders are cut off from the rest of the world and surrounded by lands chock o'block full of zombies, including 7 foot tall Alpha Zombies. The people on the island have their own training, customs and way of life. When an island mother comes down with cancer, her 12 year old son takes her out into forbidden land in search of a doctor who can cure her. Are any of these movies in this trilogy worth traversing the outer regions to see in the multiplex? Find out!Watch the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/m2HhutgFhx4
Days have turned to weeks in the Zombie United Kingdom, and David and Justus have arrived to save the day with this episode on the forgotten sequel released in the midst of the 2000s zombie movie craze. But in the world of 28 Weeks Later, the only things scarier than the rage virus are family drama and War on Terror allegories! Check out this episode, and then head on over to the Jeremy Renner app to discuss if this is The Greatest Movie Ever Made! 28 Weeks Later (2007) is directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and stars Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Mackintosh Muggleton, and Imogen PootsMusic: “Fractals” by Kyle Casey and White Bat Audio tw: suicide discussed

This time on General Witchfinders, we're heading back into the blood-soaked, Rage-infected streets of post-apocalyptic Britain with 28 Weeks Later — the 2007 zombie horror sequel to Danny Boyle's groundbreaking 28 Days Later. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 28 Weeks Later builds on the legacy of 28 Days Later (which we covered in episode 43), expanding the world of the Rage Virus and the aftermath of a collapsed society. While Danny Boyle didn't direct this time around — due to commitments on Sunshine — he stayed on as executive producer and even directed key sequences himself, including the ferocious opening scene. The original creators — Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter Alex Garland — initially considered a direct sequel called 29 Days Later, potentially continuing the story of Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris's characters. Instead, they pivoted to a broader, bleaker vision: an infected London under military quarantine, a supposed victory against the virus, and the inevitable resurgence of horror. Set weeks after the events of the first film, 28 Weeks Later follows the failed attempt to repopulate a ‘safe zone' in London, guarded by the US Army. As expected in a British zombie film, things go catastrophically wrong. Filming took place in iconic London locations, including Canary Wharf and 3 Mills Studios. A sequence planned for Wembley Stadium had to be shot in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium instead. The film's viral marketing campaign — quite literally — included a huge biohazard warning projected onto the White Cliffs of Dover. The Rage Virus was back. Opening in 2007, 28 Weeks Later landed in over 2,000 US cinemas and took nearly $10 million on its opening weekend. It didn't match the cultural impact of 28 Days Later, but it cemented the franchise as a landmark of modern British horror — helping shape the next wave of post-apocalyptic zombie cinema.28 Weeks Later features a fresh cast, including Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Idris Elba, and a young Imogen Poots. While none of the original characters return, the film builds on the terrifying groundwork Boyle and Garland laid in 28 Days Later — exploring themes of infection, trust, trauma, and institutional failure. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay overdo it on shrooms while trying to impress a bunch of frat bros at a party before discussing, 'Neighbors.' Andy starts off the episode with a bang, literally, by recalling the time he put on a giant fireworks display on a Fourth of July party that wound up lighting himself, and his property, on fire. Then the guys talk about one of the last great studio parties that has stood the test of time. The central theme is about handling the stress of transitioning into a new phase of your life, and the fellas discuss how parent party culture has changed in recent years. That leads to a tangent about pregnancy, and more specifically the boys' love for preggo boobs. One of the film's funniest moments revolved around the always terrific Rose Byrne having her overstuffed mammaries milked in "udderly traumatic" fashion. Aside from that drop in the bucket scene, the movie is light on female nudity, but heavy on dong humor. Including Dave Franco being able to control when he wants to be engorged. There's also ample shots of Zac Efron shirtless, and the flick does a good job of addressing his otherworldly hotness, while also letting his underrated comedic chops shine. Crank up the volume on this episode and have your neighbors call the police with a noise complaint.

Welcome to the LIVING FOR THE BOYLE review series! Daniel Francis Boyle originally hailed from Manchester, England and his filmmaking career took off thirty years ago in 1995 with the release of acclaimed cult thriller Shallow Grave. And ever since then, Danny Boyle (as he's officially known) has carved out a uniquely successful career not only achieving box office success several times but also winning a few Oscars along the way. During this time period, he has also become one of MY personal favorite directors, having helmed excellent ORIGINAL stories spanning several genres including children's fantasy, science fiction, crime drama, horror, and biopic. Over the next few months, I will be reviewing some of my favorite entries from his filmography in the lead-up to the long-awaited sequel to one of his more successful films….28 Years Later which will be released in the U.S. on June 20!It's the future, our sun is dying, and we have a crew of relatable scientists and astronauts on a mission to get to the Sun and re-ignite it so that our planet doesn't freeze. The crew of the Icarus II includes a physicist (Oscar-Winner Cillian Murphy), a horticulturalist (Oscar-Winner Michelle Yeoh), an engineer (Chris Evans), a navigator (Rose Byrne), a sun-drenched psychologist (Cliff Curtis) and is lead by fearless Captain Kaneda (Emmy-Winner Hiroyuki Sanada). This space adventure received strong reviews back in 2007 but sadly never received much of a theatrical release and was a box office bomb. However since then, it has developed a solid cult following not the least of which is due to its iconic score from composer John Murphy. Let's find out if this crew travels too close to the sun....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

[School of Movies 2024] This is an exceptionally long-awaited episode for us. One of the very first films discussed on our very first episode, way back in April 2007, mentioned repeatedly in the intervening 17 years, and promised over and over. Now we finally reach it, one of the most special and meaningful films to us. It was directed by Danny Boyle after 28 Days later but before Slumdog Millionaire. It very overtly draws inspiration from Aliens and 2001, it stars Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Rose Byrne, Hiroyuki Sanada Cliff Curtis, Benedict Wong and Mark Strong. It was written by Alex Garland, scored by John Murphy and Underworld, it made one twentieth the box office of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. ...and it is quite literally BRILLIANT.
It's been a long time coming, but another horror franchise was looming large in my to do bin for episode content. I've tackled some of the modern classics, and with The Conjuring franchise in the rearview mirror, it dawns upon me to take on the other Patrick Wilson spooky multi-movie series. So Insidious o'clock, here we are.If you like hauntings and family dramas with emotional resonance, this is the franchise and episode for you. I break down the confusing, but important, chronological order you should watch these in, show you who the real MVP and main character of the franchise is, and lastly, try not to, but inevitably compare Insidious and Conjuring.Make sure to let me know what you think of this horror franchise. Hit me up on social to share if you have had any emotional resonance or tears shed watching any of these movies at @NickNackMovies or @NickNack_IC on Instagram, Tik Tok, Letterboxd or Twitter. It may surprise you which movie I cried at.
Mark and David Cross discuss the 2010 horror film Insidious. Directed by James Wan, and starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye and a real jerk of a demon, the movie focuses on what happens when horrible creatures attack a nice family. In this episode, they also talk about Blumhouse horror, Leigh Whannell, and why Insidious helped spark a horror renaissance
When in an emergency situation, it may be better to do as you are told… if not you might cause an(other) outbreak. We watch a single family take down a whole country (and probably the rest of the world) in 28 Weeks Later from 2007. A dad starts the film in a thrilling sequence as a coward, becomes a liar, makes some terrible choices, and then kills so many people. The kids he raised are uninterested in following rules or asking for help, even in an apocalyptic situation. And mom just wants to love her family while possibly holding the key to humanity's salvation. It's a lot to put on a family of four. And Jeremy Renner and Rose Byrne just want to save kids, though for different reasons. When Gene Roddenberry was trying to get Star Trek off the ground, it took a lot of convincing of executives, the help of influential stars, and a lot of reworking of ideas, stories, and characters. They created the pilot and it wasn't quite up to the standards that would manage to get it on the air. But eventually, the classic episodes we know and love did find their way to our TVs.
