Making Culture is the first in-depth report on K12 Education Makerspaces nationwide. The report, authored by ExCITe Director Youngmoo Kim, Kareem Edouard, Katlyn Alderfer, and Brian Smith, examines the culture behind makerspaces and the impact it can have on the students within these spaces. Postdoctoral fellow and lead researcher on the Making Culture report Kareem Edouard sat down with us to share his findings. We also spoke with Matt Riggan, co-founder of The Workshop School in West Philadelphia. The Workshop School is an alternative high school with a focus on collaboration, building, and hands-on learning. Matt talks about how the culture of The Workshop School shapes his students, and how he and his team are making an effort to create a space that is welcoming and hospitable to all. It's never too early to start planning for your future - this month, we explore three ways in which K12 students are able to find engagement opportunities with the ExCITe Center. In February of 2016, the Director of the ExCITe Center, Youngmoo Kim, began collaborating with composer Lembit Beecher and librettist Hannah Moscovitch to create Sophia’s Forest: an opera that focuses on the interior world of a 9-year-old child, Sophia, who has recently immigrated to the United States. To evoke Sophia’s thoughts and memories, Youngmoo, working with architect Simon Kim and engineer Mark Yim of the University of Pennsylvania, created nine tree-like, sound-producing sculptures as part of the opera’s set. An estimated half of all small businesses in the United States have little-to-no online presence. So, in collaboration with Rebrand Cities, the ExCITe Center will be partnering with the West Philadelphia Corridor Collaborative and the Lancaster Avenue 21 business association to help Philly entrepreneurs get their businesses online. Saturday, June 17 will culminate in the debut performance of a brand new, original instrument for two ExCITe Center residents. Artist in Residence Peter English and PhD candidate Jeff Gregorio have been working hard for the last year to develop Drumhenge — a circle of 16 drums that have been modified with magnets and code to give off a more electronic, eery sound.
