237: Sponsorships for Small Businesses: What's Actually Possible When You Stop Pitching Wrong

The Messy Success Podcast

Welcome back to the Messy Success Podcast! This week, Elizabeth is sitting down with sponsorship coach and author Justin Moore of Creator Wizard to talk about what sponsorships are, why so many small businesses and creators are leaving money on the table, and how to completely change the way you pitch brands. If you have ever wondered whether sponsorships are even worth pursuing, or if you have sent a pitch and heard nothing back, this episode is for you. Whether you are a brick and mortar, an event host, a podcaster, or a local content creator, Justin breaks down why the problem is almost never your audience size. It is the approach. Elizabeth and Justin go deep on the ROPE method for writing a sponsorship proposal that actually lands, why affiliates are not the same as sponsorships, and what happened when Elizabeth applied Justin's framework to her own in-person event and made more money than ever before. They also do a live coaching moment using a real brand, so you can hear exactly how this thinking works in practice. This is the kind of conversation that makes you look at your business and think, I have been sitting on so much opportunity. Take a listen and start seeing what is already possible for you.

In this episode, we sit down with Justin Moore, a creator who's made over $5 million in brand sponsorships across 600+ deals and now helps thousands of creators monetise their influence. Justin breaks down why most creators approach sponsorships completely wrong, how to get brand deals with zero subscribers, and the exact framework he uses to negotiate partnerships worth tens of thousands of dollars. We discuss the sponsorship continuum, why you need to change your pitch based on where you're at in your journey, and how to serve brands by creating content for them before you have a massive audience. He explains the Arc Framework for understanding what brands actually care about, whether it's awareness, repurposing rights, or conversion, and why your pricing has to change dramatically depending on their goals. Justin shares why you should never have a public rate card, how to get brands to reveal their budget without asking directly, and the hell yeah number that takes the pressure off negotiations. We dive into the rope pitching method for cold outreach, why involving your audience in sponsorship decisions is the secret to landing better deals, and how to turn rejection into future opportunities by treating every no as not yet. Justin also reveals why most creators are being selfish by not offering sponsorships, the power of psychographic research, and how to position yourself as a consultant rather than just another commodified vendor. If you're a creator trying to monetize your platform, struggling to land your first brand deal, or wondering how to turn your content into a sustainable income stream, this episode will give you the exact playbook to start making money from sponsorships today. Eric and the Podhouse crew discuss their experience during the second day of the Sponsor Games, a collaborative event for content creators. Alongside his partners, Triplett describes a high-pressure challenge where teams had to follow a brand brief to script, film, and edit a sixty-second promotional video for Shure microphones in just over an hour. The group details their creative process, including selecting "money shots" and navigating the technical requirements of the brief while managing team dynamics. Following the production, industry expert Justin Moore provided critical feedback, highlighting common mistakes such as branding errors and lighting issues. The episode emphasizes the importance of clear communication and professional storytelling for contractors looking to build a personal brand. Eric concludes by encouraging listeners to overcome the fear of perfection and focus on delivering authentic value through video marketing. Key Takeaways:  Embrace collaboration by being willing to take direction and work effectively with a team even if you are already an expert in your field. Use storyboarding and sequential planning to maintain focus and maximize efficiency when working under strict time constraints. Pay close attention to every detail of a project brief, such as the correct spelling of brand names and specific technical requirements, to ensure your work meets professional standards. Prioritize clear and authentic communication of your value to quickly establish trust with potential partners or clients. Stop overthinking and start producing immediately, recognizing that consistent action and delivery are the best ways to improve your skills over time.

Many aspiring podcasters jump into the game with dreams of monetizing through advertising. But, oh boy, they may want to sit down for this one. The conversation dives deep into the reality of podcast sponsorships and the ever-evolving landscape of listener numbers. Dave Jackson brings in insights from Rob Walsh and Dan Granger, revealing that the golden number for downloads keeps climbing. Gone are the days when 5,000 downloads would get you a seat at the table; now, advertisers are eyeing shows with 50,000 downloads or more. This isn't just a minor shift—it's a major wake-up call for those thinking they can cash in early. As the discussion unfolds, we examine the absurdity of the “winner-takes-all” model that seems to be taking over the podcasting industry. With institutional money flooding in, smaller shows are often left scrambling for scraps. The conversation touches on the idea of partnerships over traditional sponsorships, highlighting how podcasters like Ray Arnott create symbiotic relationships with their sponsors, focusing on mutual growth rather than mere transactions. It's a refreshing reminder that collaboration might just be the key to survival in a market that often feels like a giant treadmill—running hard but going nowhere fast. In wrapping up, the episode encourages podcasters not to abandon hope if their download numbers are modest. Instead, it suggests a change in perspective: think of sponsors as partners. This approach not only fosters a sense of community but also positions the podcaster as a valuable ally to their sponsors. After all, who wouldn't want to work together for mutual success? The key takeaway? Start building relationships, and when you hit those coveted download numbers, you'll be ready to turn those partnerships into profit. The episode closes with a nod to resources like the book ‘Sponsor Magnet' by Justin Moore, which offers a deeper dive into creating meaningful sponsorships. It's not about just getting a check; it's about building a sustainable model where both parties thrive.Takeaways:Many aspiring podcasters mistakenly believe that monetization through advertising is the only way to earn.Understanding the current advertising landscape can change your approach to podcast monetization strategies. To attract sponsors, it's essential to have at least 50,000 downloads per episode, which is quite a hurdle.Instead of viewing advertising as a transaction, consider it a partnership for mutual benefit with sponsors.Building authentic relationships with sponsors is crucial, especially when your audience size is smaller. The podcast industry is leaning towards a model where only a few shows dominate, making it harder for newcomers.Links referenced in this episode:411 iTem 0241 - Dan Granger - CEO Oxford Road and Host of the Media Roundtable Podcastprofitfromyourpodcast.comaroundthelayout.comSponsor Magnet BookOxford RoadMedia Roundtable ShowPodcast411 ShowProfit From Your Podcast

Joey has been looking into going to London for spring break but is worried about getting his family's passports in time. He would have to have them in exactly four weeks. He is worried about booking the trip and then not getting them in time. Joey and Nancy try to guess what Super Bowl commercials are advertising by just listening to the audio. They failed on all but one. Hot Tea: Nancy Guthrie is still missing, and there is now a $50,00 reward for anyone that can provide significant evidence in her case. In this episode, I dive into Chapter 9 of Show Your Work by Austin Kleon, titled "Sell Out."Key Takeaways from Chapter 9: "Sell Out"Keep your day job: Kleon emphasizes that having a stable income allows you to create freely without the pressure of monetizing everything immediately.Don't be afraid to charge for your work: When you're ready, it's okay to ask for compensation. Your work has value, and selling it doesn't make you a sellout.Stay true to your mission: Selling out only happens when you abandon your principles or compromise your artistic integrity for money. If you're staying authentic, you're not selling out.Find ways to support your craft: Whether through freelancing, crowdfunding, or other creative revenue streams, look for opportunities that align with your values.Be entrepreneurial: Embrace the business side of creativity. Learn about pricing, marketing, and building sustainable income streams around your work.My ThoughtsThis chapter really resonated with me as a creator navigating the balance between sharing freely and building a sustainable business. Kleon's permission to charge for our work while staying authentic is refreshing—it's not about selling out, it's about valuing what we create. What's Next?Tomorrow, I'll be reading a chapter from Sponsor Magnet by Justin Moore. If you're serious about growing your podcast in 2026, YouTube is no longer a “nice to have”—it's a core part of your podcast marketing strategy. This year, YouTube rolled out a wave of new tools that make the platform friendlier than ever to creators who want to grow sustainably without burnout. From AI-powered analytics to auto-dubbing in 20+ languages, these updates are transforming how podcasters reach global audiences, collaborate smarter, and monetize content more effectively. But here's the real question: which of these features actually move the needle for podcasters—and which are just shiny distractions? In this episode of The Podcast Space, I welcome video strategist Yesenia Bocanegra to break down what's essential for growth, what to experiment with, and what you can safely ignore (at least for now). The Must-Try Features for Podcasters on YouTubeThe new AI analytics in YouTube Studio are one of my favorite additions. They make it so much easier to understand how each episode performs, which content connects most with listeners, and where new subscribers are coming from. I've always loved data, but let's be honest—it can be overwhelming. This update finally makes analytics feel approachable, even for creators who aren't data nerds. Then there's the collaboration feature, which has been an absolute game changer for me. I tested it by tagging past guests in older videos, and after collaborating with sponsorship coach Justin Moore, I saw a 700% increase in views in just two weeks. It's one of those “low effort, high reward” features that breathe new life into your back catalog. I now see collaborations as part of my passive marketing strategy—a simple but powerful way to extend reach without constantly creating new content.Chapters:00:00 - Introduction to YouTube's New Features for Podcasters00:07- Leveraging YouTube's New Collaborations Tool for Audience Growth00:38 - AI Tools and Studio Upgrades for Content CreationResources mentioned in this episode:For the full list of links, resources and show notes, please visit:https://www.thepodcastspace.com/podcast/s4-107-the-youtube-features-podcasters-cant-live-without-in-2026-and-whats-just-hype

In this episode: If you've felt burned by brand partnerships in the past or believe your blog isn't "big enough" for sponsorships, this episode will challenge everything you think you know about working with brands. Justin Moore has facilitated over $5 million in brand partnerships and he shares why direct brand relationships can be more profitable than working through networks alone. He also reveals his framework for turning one-off deals into recurring partnerships and shares why your audience size matters less than you think when positioning yourself to work with brands.   About Justin: Justin Moore is a Sponsorship Coach, author, and the founder of Creator Wizard, a school & community that teaches you how to find & negotiate your dream brand partnerships so that you stop leaving thousands on the table. His latest book, "Sponsor Magnet," offers a succinct distillation of his ideas and frameworks for securing successful brand collaborations.   Along with his wife April, he has been a full-time creator since 2014 and has personally made over $5M working with brands. He also ran an influencer marketing agency for 7 years that helped other creators earn millions more.   Justin brings a very unique perspective because not only has he been a creator in the trenches doing sponsorships for years but by running an agency, he has insider knowledge behind how big brands choose which influencers to partner with and why they pass on others. Justin's mission is to enable creators big and small to land 1 million paid brand partnerships by 2032.       Key points from this episode: Why Your Past Brand Partnership Experiences Might Have Sucked (And Why That Doesn't Matter) The Mindset Shift: You're Not Just a Creator, You're a Consultant Should You Work With Brands That Have Never Done Influencer Marketing? Welcome back to another episode of Creator Science. I'm back home now, fresh off a trip to Cleveland for the fourth annual CEX, Content Entrepreneur Expo. While I was there, I caught up with my good friend Justin Moore. Justin is the founder of Creator Wizard, the author of Sponsor Magnet, and the creator of Sponsor Games. He is the sponsorship guy. In this conversation, you'll hear us discuss his book experience. He published his book Sponsor Magnet in January, and I wanted to hear how things are going now, midway through the year. And we talk about my book progress and why I'm thinking so much about writing. Full transcript and show notes Justin's Website / Instagram / Twitter / YouTube / TikTok *** TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Creator Science with Justin Moore 06:15 Pursuing Book Reviews Diligently 07:59 Strategizing Review Acquisition Campaign 11:00 Navigating Publishing Industry Nuances 13:42 Loss Leader Book Marketing Strategy 18:11 Unexpected Audience Insight 20:25 Book-Based Marketing Strategy Experiment 24:57 Embracing Optimization Over Novelty 29:12 Future Book Strategies and Ideas 32:52 Exploring Traditional Publishing Process 34:06 Seeking Audience Expansion & Flexibility 38:19 Balancing Book Writing Challenges 42:23 Books' Unique Impact on Readers 46:05 AI-Enriched Responses for Business 48:39 Exploring Publishing Opportunities Now 51:09 Talk Next Week *** RECOMMENDED NEXT EPISODE → #239: Justin Moore – What if feels like launching a book and an in-person event at the same time *** ASK CREATOR SCIENCE → Submit your question here *** WHEN YOU'RE READY
