Joy is the strategy. Fresh food is the medicine. And Philadelphia is the proving ground. In this episode Melissa L. Jones sits down with Jiana Murdic — wellness warrior, health justice advocate and founder of Get Fresh Daily, a Philadelphia based initiative working at the intersection of farm fresh food, culturally rooted education and community joy. For over 15 years Jiana has been reshaping how communities relate to food — from inner city classrooms to city policy, from CSA boxes to pop up markets rooted in West Philadelphia. They explore what it really takes to make healthy food accessible and appealing without shame or judgment, why the food system's collapse may actually be the opening communities need to rebuild something better, and what Philadelphia looks like when the vision of Get Fresh Daily fully succeeds.
In this special two-part conversation on The Neoliberal Round Podcast, Dr. Nolan Fontaine joins Renaldo McKenzie to discuss two urgent struggles unfolding in America today: environmental justice in Chester, Pennsylvania, and the fight for Indigenous recognition and visibility. In Part 1, (this episode) Dr. Fontaine discusses the growing movement opposing Philadelphia's practice of sending its trash to Chester to be burned at the Reworld/Covanta incinerator — one of the largest incinerators in the United States. He speaks about the recent protest at Mayor Cherelle Parker's budget meeting in West Philadelphia, allegations surrounding political and corporate interests, the health impacts on Chester residents, and why activists describe the situation as environmental racism. The conversation explores decades of organizing by Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living (CRCQL), community resistance, youth activism, and the broader struggle over power, pollution, and accountability. In Part 2, which is scheduled to release on Memorial Day, May 24th, Dr. Fontaine shifts to his role as President of the Urban Indian Heritage Society (UIHS), where he discusses updates surrounding the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and its movement toward federal recognition as the 757th federally recognized tribe in America. The discussion explores Indigenous identity, urban Indigenous communities, cultural survival, political recognition, and the importance of visibility in a society that often treats Native peoples as relics of the past rather than living communities. This is a powerful conversation about resistance, identity, justice, survival, and the communities America too often ignores.Dr. Nolan Fontaine is a member of the CRCQL and is the Coordinator of the YouTh Arm. Dr. Nolan is also the President of the Urban Indian Heritage Society. Dr. Nolan Fontaine is also a brother of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.Rev. The Work to Ride program basically started with an idea that I had about using horses and youth combining those two to make a difference in the lives of children.“骑马计划”项目基本上源于我一个想法,即把马匹和青少年结合起来,从而改变孩子们的生活。Our facility, Chamonix Equestrian Center, is located in Philadelphia. And it is bordered on two of the most crime-ridden neighborhoods here in Philadelphia. One is North Philadelphia and one is West Philadelphia. We have children that come from those neighborhoods. Being in the program has kept me away from a lot of stuff like getting involved in drugs and getting related things that usually happen in the street. When I come to the barn, I'm always very happy. I'm usually excited, usually ready to ride. The horses that we use in the program are donated. The kids in the Work to Ride program are primarily responsible for taking care of horses. On any given day, they're responsible for chores, cleaning up the stables, taking care of any medical needs that any of the horses may have. It's a big responsibility. It is a lot of work to do. But all the work like is contributing to the one important thing is taking care of the horse. And if take care of the horse, then we're able to ride and it all leads up to playing in the games and just good management. I feel like I've built an individual bond with each and every horse we have at our barn. Two murals of Mpozi exist in Indianapolis's Broad Ripple and Fountain Square neighborhoods, celebrating his life and work.
In the social impact sector, we talk a lot about systems. Structural barriers. Root causes. Power structures. But I've watched systems-focused thinking become its own kind of trap: top-down, abstract, and alienating the very people it aims to serve.Because systems aren't just structures and policies. They're people. And you can't change a system by imposing solutions from above. You have to build with the people living inside it.My guest today calls herself a practical radical. After her father died when she was eleven, basketball saved her. For eight years, she coached high school girls in West Philadelphia, taking a program from 0-18 in her first season to state champions in her last. But she noticed something: for some kids, sports is a hobby. For others, it's a lifeline. We celebrate the ones who make it out but rarely ask why so many need a lifeline in the first place.Beulah Osueke is the Executive Director of New Voices for Reproductive Justice and the founder of PILR, a new initiative transforming youth sports into spaces of wellness, equity, and growth.Episode Highlights[00:00] Introduction[02:11] How basketball saved her after losing her father[03:05] Why do we require resilience instead of building better systems?[05:34] Sports as hobby vs. sports as lifeline[08:47] From faith-based organizing to reproductive justice[09:55] Releasing toxic theology[13:30] "I don't have the answers. On August 10th, 1994, a man and a woman were in a van in West Philadelphia, when two males approached. One blocked the passenger door, while the other shot the man before he could get out of the van. The witness identified 16 year old Johnny Berry from a photo, but rescinded the ID at a preliminary hearing. Inexplicably, Johnny was re-arrested and sent back to juvenile detention, where he met Tauheed Lloyd who had admitted to being one of the assailants. When Lloyd refused to clear Johnny's name, they fought. Months later, Lloyd was arrested in an unrelated incident, and his gun matched the murder weapon. Unaware of this evidence, Lloyd thought Johnny had snitched. In turn, he gave false testimony for leniency and out of spite, sending Johnny away for life without parole. Years later, Lloyd's attempted recantation was silenced by threats of perjury and another murder prosecution. It took a slew of Supreme Court rulings on juvenile life sentences and the Philadelphia CIU to right this wrong. When Morris Foster died in 1889 at the Blockley Hospital in West Philadelphia, his friends suspected that he had been poisoned. Foster's corpse was exhumed and a graveside post-mortem examination was performed. But as the two physicians prepared to remove portions of Foster's internal organs and bone for a chemical analysis, they made a shocking discovery-- a line of deftly-placed stitches over the abdomen of the deceased. Evidently, someone had already performed an autopsy. But who? And, more importantly, why?
