Joining me for this episode of Perspectives is culinary expert Annette Anthony. In Always Enough: A Global Food Memoir written by Annette Anthony takes readers on a global culinary adventure. She uses her Black girl culinary experience to show that what is similar across cultures stands out just as much as their uniqueness, and that there is always enough at the table, however little or much. From Philadelphia to travels across several continents, Anthony offers a generous and eclectic collection of more than 160 recipes she developed across her lifetime. Unlike cookbooks that concentrate on food preparation and ingredients alone, Always Enough maps a life enriched by many cultures and cuisines, reflecting the author's worlds and discovery of the crossroads of cultures and cuisines through poetry, prose and recipes. Anthony's memoir launches from her grandparents West Philadelphia home, where their southern roots influenced meals. Then she takes us to Paris, the Ivory Coast and back to Europe where she now lives in London.

Born in West Philadelphia, Reef the Lost Cauze came up in hip-hop as a lethal battle-rap MC. He defeated opponents in all types of venues, from school grounds to grimy back alleys to professional competitions. His first two albums, The High Life (2002) and Invisible Empire (2003), were released locally and put his name on the map for Philadelphia's underground rap scene. In the years that followed his third album, a few local mixtapes were released, but the Philadelphia MC had success in doing several collaborations and features. He was invited into the Philadelphia crew JuJu Mob, who released their 2005 album Black Candles on Eastern Conference, as well as the underground super-collective Army of the Pharaohs.Reef the Lost Cauze has released 13 albums in total, the latest of which - The Triumphant - dropped earlier this year, and is his most introspective and reflective to date.  With this powerful work, Reef continues to pave a legacy of one of the finest MCs around.  Few have the rhyme and flow talent, but it is the stories he tells, and the perspective he offers you to share for a moment that truly sets him apart. Please join me as we spend time with Philadelphia's own, Reef the Lost Cauze.Be sure to catch him at Philly Music Fest on Fri 10/25 at Milkboy Philly along with (friends of the show) Kuf Knotz & Christine Elise, Queasy, and Catbite.  Or whenever you can get the chance to see him perform.  You will be amazed!Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". On a Move: Philadelphia's Notorious Bombing and a Native Son's Lifelong Battle for Justice by Mike Africa Jr. https://amzn.to/4cs15Zw The incredible story of MOVE, the revolutionary Black civil liberties group that Philadelphia police bombed in 1985, killing 11 civilians—by one of the few people born into the organization, raised during the bombing's tumultuous aftermath, and entrusted with repairing what was left of his family. "As necessary and powerful as it is captivating." – Michael Harriot, New York Times bestselling author of Black AF History "Searing and urgent." – Bakari Sellers, New York Times bestselling author of My Vanishing Country and The Moment Before police dropped a bomb on a residential neighborhood on May 13, 1985, few people outside Philadelphia were aware that a Black-led civil liberties organization had taken root there. Founded in 1972 by a charismatic ideologue called John Africa, MOVE's mission was to protect all forms of life from systemic oppression. They drew their ideology from the Black Panther Party and pre-dated animal and environmental rights groups like PETA and Earth First. MOVE emerged in an era when Black Philadelphians suffered under devastating policies brought by the long, doomed war in Vietnam, Mayor Frank Rizzo's overtly racist police surveillance, and, eventually, President Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs. MOVE members lived together in a collection of West Philadelphia row houses and took the surname Africa out of admiration for the group's founder. But in MOVE's lifestyle, city officials saw threats to their status quo. Their bombing of MOVE homes shocked the nation and made international news. Eleven people were killed, including five children. And the City of Brotherly Love became known as the City That Bombed Itself. Among the children most affected by the bombing was Mike Africa Jr. Born in jail following a police attack on MOVE that led to his parents' decades-long incarcerations, Mike was six years old and living with his grandmother when MOVE was bombed. In the ensuing years, Mike sought purpose in the ashes left behind. He began learning about the law as a teenager and became adept at speaking and inspiring public support with the help of other MOVE members. In 2018, at age 40, he finally succeeded in getting his parents released from prison. On a Move is one of the most unimaginable stories of injustice and resilience in recent American history. But it is not only one of tragedy. It is about coming-of-age for a young activist, the strong ties of family, and, against all odds, learning how to take indignities on the chin and to work within the very system that created them. At once a harrowing personal account and an impassioned examination of racism and police violence, On a Move testifies to the power of love and hope, in the face of astonishing wrongdoing.

Well hey there listeners, did you miss me? Probably not, but I'll pretend that you've been in a void of interesting history factoids. It's been a literal year plus since I uploaded an episode. And I am starting this party off with some fun history. On today's first episode back in 2024, Trisha and I discussed the MOVE bombing in Philly--who is MOVE, why did everyone (especially their neighbors) hate them, what shout out, and the bombing. Originally called the Christian Movement for Life, MOVE is a communal organization that advocates for nature laws and natural living. At times, it has been viewed as a cult, like many movements that started in the 70s. It was founded in 1972 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, by John Africa (born Vincent Leaphart). John was a West Philadelphia native and Korean War veteran. The name, styled in all capital letters, is not an acronym. MOVE lived in a communal setting in West Philadelphia, abiding by philosophies of anarcho-primitivism, meaning that they wanted to go back to hunter-gatherer type living. The pre-industrial revolutionary world at minimum. WIIIILD. Their ideology combined a wide array of ideologies, including environmentalism, animal rights and an end to capitalism–OR anti-government, anti-technology, and anti-corporation. The group's activities were closely watched by law enforcement, at times leading to armed confrontation, including the 1977 stand-off we touch on in this episode, and the bombing in 1985. Take a listen and let us know what we should talk about next!Sources:https://whyy.org/episodes/the-move-bombing-in-philadelphia-memory-and-justice/https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jun/18/debbie-sims-africa-free-prison-move-nine-philadelphia-police https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/8/8/20747198/philadelphia-bombing-1985-move https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/05/13/406243272/im-from-philly-30-years-later-im-still-trying-to-make-sense-of-the-move-bombing https://whyy.org/articles/how-the-philly-medical-examiners-office-mishandled-move-victims-remains-for-36-years/

Today's Headlines: House Republicans, led by Matt Gaetz, sabotaged a procedural vote to start debate on the reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, citing concerns over an exclusionary amendment that Trump claimed would protect Americans but others argued would dismantle the program. By blocking the debate, any chance to advocate for the amendment was effectively quashed. In other news, a shooting during a Ramadan event in West Philadelphia left three injured, including the 15-year-old suspect who was subsequently apprehended by police. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (11/10/2023): 3:05pm- November 7th proved to be yet another disappointing election day for Republicans across the country. In Kentucky, Andy Beshear (D) won reelection in his gubernatorial campaign. Republicans in Virginia lost control of the state House—meaning that Democrats now control both chambers of the Virginia legislature. Meanwhile, Ohioans voted in favor of establishing abortion as a state constitutional right. Locally, Republicans in Pennsylvania and New Jersey struggled—with Judge Dan McCaffery defeating Judge Carolyn Carluccio to win a seat on Pennsylvania's Supreme Court. How can Republicans change course moving forward? Removing Ronna Romney McDaniel from her position as Republican Party Chairwoman, reaching out to younger voters via TikTok, and expanding the conservative vote by embracing mail-in ballots and taking advantage of early voting. 3:10pm- Jersey Freedom, a political organization, spent tens-of-thousands of dollars backing third party candidates in hopes of diluting the Republican vote in New Jersey's November 7th election. The ad campaign even included endorsements for candidates that have withdrawn from their races. In response, New Jersey Republican Party sued—alleging that the organization has violated campaign finance reporting laws by shielding donor information. Last week, “Superior Court Judge Michael Blee said that Jersey Freedom may make no further expenditures in New Jersey, but acknowledged that with Election Day just five days away, his decision might be too late to matter,” according to a report from David Wildstein of The New Jersey Globe. How many votes did these candidates receive? And what was the impact on the final election results? You can read more here: https://newjerseyglobe.com/legislature/n-j-judge-freezes-bank-account-of-dark-money-group-backing-fake-candidate-bars-them-from-further-voter-communications/ 3:15pm- Congressman Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) is urging the United States government to create an expedited, lawful pathway toward refuge for people of Jewish faith who are being persecuted globally in the aftermath of the October 7th Hamas-led terror attacks on Israeli citizens. In a statement, Rep. Van Drew explained: “The Biden administration must step up and offer refuge to Jews across the world who fear for their lives and require immediate temporary relocation by providing expedited entry into the United States. Our nation has always stood as a beacon of hope to those who are persecuted, and we must stand strong on our foundational principles by providing unwavering support for Jewish communities across the world.” You can read his full statement here: https://vandrew.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=594 3:30pm- According to a report from The New York Times, “F.B.I. agents seized Mayor Eric Adams's electronic devices early this week in what appeared to be a dramatic escalation of a federal corruption investigation into whether his 2021 campaign conspired with the Turkish government and others to funnel money into its coffers… The agents approached the mayor on the street and asked his security detail to step away, one of the people said. They climbed into his S.U.V. with him and, pursuant to a court-authorized warrant, took his devices.” You can read the full report from William K.
