ABOUT SPACE: THE LONGEST GOODBYE In the next decade, NASA intends to send astronauts to Mars for the first time. To succeed, crew members must overcome unprecedented life-threatening challenges. And while many of these hazards are physical, the most elusive are psychological. Throughout their three-year absence, crew members won't be able to communicate with Earth in real time due to the immense distance. The psychological impact of this level of disconnectedness and isolation-both from mission control and loved ones-is impossible to predict, endangering the mission itself. Directed to mitigate this threat is Dr. Al Holland, a NASA psychologist whose job is to keep astronauts mentally stable in space. Space: The Longest Goodbye follows Holland, rookie astronauts Kayla Barron and Matthias Maurer, and former astronaut Cady Coleman, among others, as they grapple with the tension between their dream of reaching new frontiers and their basic human need to stay connected to home. This conflict transcends space travel: how do humans balance the quest for progress with a deep connection to history and each other? Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63KKJM4aOtE DR. CADY COLEMAN BIO Dr. Cady Coleman is a former NASA Astronaut and Air Force Colonel with more than 180 days in space, accumulated during two space shuttle missions and a six-month expedition to the International Space Station (ISS), where she acted as the Lead Robotics and Lead Science officer.Cady is a vocal advocate for inclusion in STEM/STEAM fields and a sought after speaker on a wide range of topics. She recently co-anchored ABC News Live's coverage of the SpaceX launch and the Perseverance Mars Rover landing. Meet the second-generation Jamaican-American boss lady that serves as the STEM/STEAM Coordinator at South Atlanta High School all while owning and operating Twelve12 Group: a company consisting of connected brands that include short/mid term rentals and consulting. After working as a Corporate Account Marketer, Andrea began her 18 year education tenure and has since served as a secondary Mathematics and Social Studies teacher and Instructional Coach of all subjects and grade levels. Andrea realized that there is a significant gap between the current K-12 education experience and the experiences required to adequately prepare students for a STEM-centered workforce. She saw a way where she could help to close this gap by providing K-12 schools/districts, for-profit businesses and non-profit organizations with solutions and strategies that address these challenges; and from that initiative Twelve12 Group was born! Twelve12 Consulting specifically helps organizations to provide quality STEM/STEAM programming for historically underrepresented groups with specialized interest in students who identify as Black and/or LatinX and those in the Caribbean Diaspora. She mixes in our culture while also letting black women know they belong in this space. We will discuss Breenae's childhood, college experience, early career, and pivoting into cybersecurity! If you enjoyed this episode please share it out. #cybersecurity #productmanagement #blackwomen Breenae Bio: Breenae is an engineer with a passion for diversity and inclusion. Growing up, she excelled at math and science but often questioned her abilities because she didn't see other girls who shared her interests. Despite the lack of representation, with the support of her family and teachers, she found the strength to take the road less traveled. After receiving her degree from the Missouri University of Science and Technology and starting a career in IT, she quickly noticed that the lack of diversity in STEM/STEAM was still a serious issue. If you don't already know of her, she is an award-winning author of over 40 nonfiction books for children, mostly about science and technology. Jennifer's love of STEM began when she started a science club in her garage at the age of 7. And not only that, but we consider her a school visit champion! During the talk, we asked Jennifer these questions… Jennifer, in your opinion what's the difference between a good school visit and a really GREAT one? How do you go about engaging kids and keeping their attention? And further, how do you get them excited? A lot of authors write and present about STEM subjects, but what makes YOURS extra special? And we hope to dedicate a whole episode to this soon, but while we have you here what tech do you use for presenting, Jennifer? Tell us about the non-fiction writing workshops that you offer! I see that 3 sessions is your full day. How did you come to that number? (I recently raised my prices, but I added a fourth session to my full day, and it's intense! But I also feel like a wimp compared to what teachers are doing each day with students. I think I'll go back to 3 sessions a day next school year.) Have you ever had a school visit disaster? Do tell! How do you go about getting school visit gigs? Do you handle everything on your own or do you use a booking agency? What's one thing you've learned over the course of doing school visits? Or what's your main advice you have for other authors to up their school visit game? Thanks for joining us, Jennifer! How can we harness curiosity to engage learners in STEM and in the world around them? Swift Creek Media CEO Brad Herring shares thoughts on storytelling, building STEM connections, and approaching the world from a new perspective. Plus, learn about the NISENetwork and its many STEM resources. While Brad's career began by serving overseas in Panama with the United States Peace Corps, his passion for filmmaking began with the birth of his daughter. What started as a hobby, quickly grew into his job and eventually led him to start his own production company, Swift Creek Media. He has over 17 years of experience in project management, creating and producing over 150 videos for one of the largest science museum networks in the United States. Brad previously worked at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC and led NISE Network online workshops while serving as NISENet's Earth & Space project-based professional learning community leader and as the Southeast regional hub leader. I first met Brad when we were both deeply ensconced in the museum world. Through our collaboration together, I learned how to tap into STEM resources and community professionals to enhance the wow factor of the STEAM Night programs I developed for the children's museum where I was working at the time. Welcome to November 8, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the technology that inspires us every day. Science and technology are critical to our future. Plus they are just plain cool! That's why STEM and STEAM education have become increasingly popular. For those of you who aren't familiar with the terms, STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The A was added to incorporate Art for a more well rounded curriculum. Young children are curious by nature, so introducing them to science and technology early in life can make a huge difference in their development. Even if your child doesn't focus on a career in any of these fields, STEM and STEAM education can set them on a path towards success. On National STEM/STEAM Day, take time to inspire the little ones in your life, because they are the ones who will shape our future. What we know as the cappuccino was first served in Vienna coffee houses in the early 1800s. The coffee, when mixed with cream and sugar, took on a shade of brown that reminded baristas of a monk's robes, specifically, those worn by the Capuchin monks. Hence, the name cappuccino. FYI, the word cappuccino means hood in Italian, and the order of monks got the name because of their hooded robes. It wasn't until post World War II, that cappuccinos became popular worldwide. And that was due to espresso machines becoming more readily available. On National Cappuccino Day, celebrate this Italian specialty that coffee lovers worship. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. What makes theatre such an important part of building connections -- both in school and out of school? And how can theatre help foster imagination and self-awareness as part of a strong STEM/STEAM program? Meet Selah Theatre Project's Founding Artistic Director, LaTasha Do'zia. Latasha is a visionary artist and entrepreneur who uses the arts to help build a stronger, kinder, and more creative community. As a teaching artist, LaTasha has used theatre as a tool for teacher development, private business communication, counselor training, mental health intervention, and social justice movements. In 2021, LaTasha was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Virginia Commission for the Arts,. It has been my privilege to lead professional development workshops on multicultural picture books and STEAM connections with LaTasha. We are co-teaching at Shenandoah University, where we explore bringing multicultural picture books to life. Full show notes.[02:07] We talk about LaTasha's personal adventure in learning and how she reached a place where she owns and operates her own theatre company. "I discovered theater when I was six years old," LaTasha says. "My mother said that I was too dramatic and I needed to put that energy somewhere." We've said this before on the podcast, but books have an amazing power to provide windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors for children (and adults) as they navigate establishing their identities and figuring out who they are in the world. If you haven't read it yet, I strongly encourage you to check out Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop's seminal work on the subject. At [04:27], we learn that LaTasha's favorite book from her childhood that also served as a mirror was John Steptoe's Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. We delve deeper into the creation of LaTasha's Selah Theatre Project, which she started 11 years ago. LaTasha offers a sneak peek at the new season, which includes What the Consitution Means to Me, Trouble In Mind, Macbeth, Akeelah and the Bee, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? [06:51] "We do 8 productions a year and it's a mixture of youth theater, teen theater, and community theater," she says. "We focus on diverse voices as much as possible. And diversity comes in so many ways. It's not just racial, it's also socioeconomic, it's also learning based. There's so much diversity in our group and we're very proud of that. We're small but mighty."[16:58] I have been fortunate enough to work with LaTasha to help teachers and librarians unlock strategies for connecting multicultural picture books with STEAM for more engaged learning. Coder by day and children's book author by night, author Josh Funk has published 15+ picture books, including the popular Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast series and the irreverent It's NOT a Fairy Tale series. Join us for a lively conversation as we discuss his brand new book, My Pet Feet (imagine a world without the letter R), as well as the surprising STEM/STEAM connections teachers and librarians make with his books. Full Show Notes available here (includes unplugged coding ideas and photos).I am so excited to welcome Josh Funk to the Adventures in Learning podcast today. I met Josh during the Shenandoah University Children's Literature Conference when I was asked to create STEAM activities to support and extend his works. Not only did I fall in love with How to Code a Sandcastle and How to Code a Roller Coaster, the two books I was originally asked to create activities for, but Josh's fabulous sense of humor charmed and inspired me to try to showcase each of his series in an unplugged coding activity for children. It's NOT a Fairy Tale series, including It's Not Jack and the Beanstalk, It's Not Hansel and Gretel, It's Not Little Red Riding Hood, and the soon to be published It's Not The Three Little Pigs. As a transplanted New Yorker, I absolutely love Lost in the Library and Where Is Our Library? — published in conjunction with the New York Public Library and featuring Patience and Fortitude. [02:49] Coming out this week is My Pet Feet, a story of the alphabet chaos that ensues when the letter R goes missing. Josh discusses the challenges of writing a picture book with only 25 letters.[08:10] In My Pet Feet, the little girl chases her pet feet past a fog and toad instead of a frog and toad; down a tail in the woods instead of a trail in the woods; by a babbling book instead of a babbling brook; and into a gassy field instead of a grassy field. “It's not just a list of things,” Josh says. “There's a plot. And she's trying to sort of solve this mystery about what happened and what's going on with everything. And there's a lot of other visual gags throughout. But it's definitely, I think, my cleverest book, at least up there with Dear Dragon." [22:05] Josh explains why How to Code a Sandcastle and How to Code a Roller Coaster took a really long time for him to figure out how to write. He walks us through three different versions that led to the Pearl and Pascal adventures. [28:30} "So I always tell people, if you've read How to Code a SandcastleSupport the showRead the full show notes, visit the website, and check out my on-demand virtual course. Andrew Lochery is the Founder and CEO of Phosphor, which provides teachers with tools and materials needed to deliver STEM Club activities for 9-13 year olds. After 16 years of teaching science, he found there was a problem with accessing high quality STEM resources that would help him inspire students and engage with STEM subjects - not just in the classroom, but in the world around them. These dynamic subjects are changing at an ever increasing rate, which traditional curriculums struggle to keep pace with. His mission is to provide time-poor teachers with STEM club materials and resources that are current, easy to deliver and most importantly fun for students!
