Conversations, interviews, and sermons about God and the world, faith and life. Hosted by Joshua Pfeiffer - Lutheran pastor in Australia.
In John 18:14, and John 11:47-52, we read of a mysterious incident where an evil and wicked man named Caiaphas prophesied of Jesus' substitutionary and sacrificial death on behalf of all people. His words meant more than he knew. This sermon for Good Friday proclaims God's ultimate plan in bringing good from evil.
Kathleen Mills is a Lutheran deaconess from the United States now serving in Shepparton, Australia. She joins Pastor Joshua Pfeiffer to discuss who deaconesses are and what they do. Here are the words to the poem Kathleen references during the conversation: The True Deaconess Spirit What is my want? I want to serve. Whom do I want to serve? The Lord in His wretched ones and His poor. And what is my reward? I serve neither for reward nor thanks but out of gratitude and love. My reward is that I am permitted to serve. And if I perish in this service? “If I perish, I perish,” said Queen Esther. I would perish for Him who gave Himself for me. But He will not let me perish. And if I grow old in this service? Then shall my heart be renewed as a palm tree. And the Lord shall satisfy me with grace and mercy. I go my way in peace casting all my care upon Him.
The relationship between John the Baptist and Jesus is a complex and wonderful one. This sermon unpacks that relationship via the text in Matthew 11:2-11. This message looks at what it means for Jesus' disciples to be salt and light in the world. He tells us who we are, he warns us not to lose it, and why it's so important. Here's the text: Matthew 5:13-16 “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. 15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. This message is on the text from Matthew 1:18-25 (below) which gives Joseph's perspective on the birth of Jesus. It looks at Joseph's predicament, his task and his response. He's a wonderful figure for us to mediate on and imitate in our lives. Matthew 1:18-25, "Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ 22All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:23 ‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel’, which means, ‘God is with us.’ 24When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus." This message is based on Matthew 5:1-12 and looks at what Jesus teaches it means to be truly blessed, in contrast to the messages from our wider culture. We're blessed in our helplessness as well as our helpfulness, and most of all we're blessed in Christ. Here's the text: Matthew 5:1-12, "When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. ‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. ‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. ‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." This sermon is on the account of Cain and Abel in Genesis 4:1-15. There we find a sobering message about the darkness of the human heart and where anger, bitterness and resentment can lead. However we are also lead to Jesus Christ - the new and better Abel - whose shed blood speaks a better word of grace and forgiveness. In Him we are transformed into people who are free from hate and anger to truly love our brothers and sisters. Luke 16:1-9 is sometimes called the parable of the dishonest manager. It's one of Jesus' more challenging parables where he uses the example of a unrighteous person to teach his disciples. So what's the lesson? Jesus is teaching his disciples to be streetwise like the people of this world, but with a very different end and goal in mind, namely eternal life. This is a message preached on St Paul's words to the young pastor Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:11-16. In it we hear the call to fight the good fight of the faith, make the good confession of Jesus Christ, and trust in the good God who is the ground of it all. It's something of a 'holy pep talk' that we all need from time to time.

This is a message for the festival of Pentecost on John 16:7-11. It looks at how the Holy Spirit is the Advocate who continues to prosecute the case for Christ in the hearts and minds of people. As Jesus says, the Holy Spirit convicts or proves the world wrong concerning sin, righteousness and judgment, or as one modern translation puts it, concerning what's wrong, what's right, and who's won.
This is the second instalment of a two part interview with Lutheran pastor Dr John Kleinig on his personal spiritual journey. This episode covers the period of his life from post-graduate studies in Cambridge, through his long teaching career at Luther Seminary in Adelaide (later Australian Lutheran College), and reflections on the difficult church debates Dr Kleinig has been involved in over the years. Along the way Dr Kleinig also opens up about what he may have done differently if he had his time again, and what he is most thankful for in his life.
This is a message on Jesus' words from John 14:1-6 and looks at how he brings comfort to his disciples in their troubles, and how he does the same for us today.
This is the first instalment of a two part interview with Lutheran pastor Dr John Kleinig on his personal spiritual journey. This episode covers the period of his life from childhood to his first calls into pastoral ministry as a high school chaplain. Along the way we discuss the devotional life of his family growing up, how he met his wife Claire, and his first experiences of spiritual warfare.
This Good Friday sermon looks at the Passion account of St John in John 18-19 and examines the trial/s of Jesus under the religious leaders, Pontius Pilate and Herod. It asks the question, who is really on trial? The irony is that Jesus is the only truly innocent one while everyone else is shown to be guilty. This is humanity's trial - this is our trial. But as the innocent one is condemned in our place, so we the guilty are set free.
In this conversation I sit down with Dr Michael Lockwood to discuss themes arising from his book 'The Unholy Trinity: Martin Luther against the idol of me, myself and I'. We talk about how prominent the theme of idolatry is in Luther's writing and the Bible itself, how Michael personally was challenged by confronting his own idols during his research, and how helpful this paradigm is for reaching our culture with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The book can be purchased through the following places: https://www.cph.org/p-30550-The-Unholy-Trinity-Martin-Luther-against-the-Idol-of-Me-Myself-and-I.aspx https://www.amazon.com/Unholy-Trinity-Martin-Luther-Against/dp/0758656971
This is a Lenten sermon on St John's account of Jesus' cleansing of the temple (John 2:13-22). It shows how Jesus is both the Lion of the tribe of Judah, as well as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. God bless you.
In this conversation I sit down with Dean Eaton to talk about evangelism, church planting and his journey into the Lutheran Church.
This is a Lenten sermon on 1 Peter 3:18-22 where St Peter writes to encourage suffering Christians with what Jesus has already done fore them.
The Christian church from it's earliest times has been opposed to abortion based on Biblical teaching. We believe human life begins in the womb and that this life is sacred. But how can Christians respond in positive and practical ways to the reality of abortion? How can we be truly 'pro-life' rather than only 'anti-abortion'? In this video Kairos host Joshua Pfeiffer sits down with fellow 'Lutherans for Life' members Chelsea Pietsch and Meg Pearce to discuss 10 ways Christians can respond to abortion and build a culture of life in their congregations, families and community. None of us claim to be experts in this area, but simply offer these as suggestions and starting points. Lutherans for Life Australia's website is here - http://www.lutheransforlife.lca.org.au
This sermon looks at the parable of the sower where we hear of the challenges and blessings of listening to God's word. The good news of Jesus is like a seed planted in our hearts that grows and bears abundant fruit. Let anyone with ears to hear, listen!
In this conversation I sit down with Rachel Schilling from Grow Ministries to discuss growing faith with kids in the home. We talk about the challenges involved and some practical ideas. We also go through Grow Ministries resource called 'Growing faith at home' which can be accessed at their website - https://www.growministries.org.au/
This is a message given for Harvest Thanksgiving. It looks at how Jesus calls us to shift our focus from ourselves to creation, and ultimately from creation to our loving heavenly Father.
In this conversation I talked with Joanna Hensley about the joys and challenges of a Christian parent raising a child with special needs. Joanna's oldest son has language disorders and autism spectrum disorder. Ultimately it's been a journey where Joanna has grown in faith and she wouldn't have her son any other way.
A sermon on John 2:1-11, the Wedding at Cana. First there is our spiritual emptiness and what to do with it, then there's Jesus' abundance and how he brings it.
