Twentieth Sunday of Ordinary Time - Luke 12:49-53 - I come to bring division Dr Michelle Eastwood (she/her) is Director of Research at Australian Lutheran College and Executive Officer for ANZATS and the Council of Deans of Theology. She has degrees in Psychology, History, Education and Theology. This demonstrates she is a complete nerd. Her current research interests include shame, gender and sexuality, the Hebrew Bible, worship and liturgy, and public theology. Michelle is currently exploring the Women-Church journal in connection with the Australian Women in Religion project. As part of this work, she is engaging with Wikipedia as an editor, writer and critic. Michelle is enjoying travelling again and catching up with friends and acquaintances, as long as it is balanced with introvert time at home when there is no one she has to talk to. Michelle loves to read everything from Bronte to Watego and much in between. Michelle lives on Wauthaurong land and believes that reparations must be paid for all the damage that has been perpetrated against the First Nations of this land.
With the end of Roe comes a renewed conversation about the meaning of sex and the purpose of our physical bodies. Here to discuss the theology of the body and his new book — Wonderfully Made — is a Lutheran man from a land down under: John Kleining. Check out John's faculty page at Australian Lutheran College (here) and buy his book (here) today! Episode produced by Josh Deng, with music from Vexento. A Special Thanks to Nick and Ashley Barnett for their contribution in making this podcast possible.
In this episode Brandon interviews Dr. Adam Hensley, assistant professor of Old Testament Studies and Hebrew at Australian Lutheran College in Adelaide Australia. They focus their conversation on Adam's expertise in the Psalms. They discuss what the psalms are, how they teach us to pray, how they are arranged, and much MUCH more. One quick note: Adam uses the word "Antitype" to refer to Jesus several times throughout this episode. This just means that Jesus is the fulfillment of a promise or prophecy foreshadowed or prefigured by someone or something in the Old Testament.

Rev. Dr. John Kleinig, professor emeritus of Australian Lutheran College, Adelaide, SA and author of the Concordia Commentary on Leviticus joins Rev. Brady Finnern to begin our study on Leviticus. Find this Concordia Commentary at cph.org/p-681-Leviticus-Concordia-Commentary.aspx. “Why would you study Leviticus?” many of us ask. Yet, as we begin this new study of a commonly unknown book we learn of the main focus: “God's holiness given to His people.” God calls us to holiness, promises holiness in the future, and makes us holy now. God speaks to His people about the dangers of impurity, but then promises to give His holiness to us in the Divine Service. God declares, “I am the LORD, who sanctifies you (Leviticus 19:2).” We once again look to Him who makes us holy by His Word and see Christ. “Lord God, make us holy as You are holy. By the Word and by the blood of Christ You make us clean and share Your life giving holiness with us. Fill us by Your Holy Spirit as we study Leviticus and help us to grow in faith. In Christ. Amen” Thy Strong Word reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations.
In the middle of April, Australia's prime minister Scott Morrison attended a national Australian Christian Churches Conference in the Gold Coast. A video of his speech was broadcast by Vineyard Church and distributed by the Rationalist Society soon afterwards, leading to public discussions about the separation of church and state in Australia. In his speech, Scott Morrison revealed, among other things, that he is often secretly praying and described social media misuse as the work of ‘the evil one'. It's worth noting that Morrison is the first Pentecostal prime minister Australia has had.Discussing the role of religion in Australian politics with me -- in the order you will hear from them -- are Wendy Mayer, Joanne Cruickshank and Tanya Levin.Wendy Mayer is a professor of Christianity, with a specialisation in early Christianity and particularly social history but also in contemporary religious violence and radicalisation. She is at associate dean for research at the Australian Lutheran College.Dr Joanne Cruickshank is a historian of Christianity in Britain and Australia, from the 18th century onwards, at Deakin University. She now works on religion and race, particularly the role of Christianity in Australia in relation to Aboriginal missions.Tanya Levin grew up in the church known as Hillsong and the author of the 2007 book People in Glass Houses: An Insiders Story of a Life in and out of Hillsong, which was re-released in 2015. The book outlines her story growing up in the church as well as other experiences and some theory about what takes place in Hillsong and how it became what it is with its focus on money, celebrities and music.
Rev. Dr. John Kleinig, professor emeritus of Australian Lutheran College in Adelaide, SA, Australia, and author of the Concordia Commentary on Hebrews joins Rev. Brady Finnern to begin our study of Hebrews. Find the Concordia Commentary on Hebrews at cph.org/p-30884-Hebrews-Concordia-Commentary.aspx. We often think of the benefits that we WILL receive in heaven, which is true. Yet, the author to the Hebrews emphasizes all the gifts of heaven that we receive now. Jesus, the Great High Priest, brings cleansing, atonement, the Holy Spirit, blessing, heavenly food, and grace to His people now by His Word. As we begin our study on Hebrews, we get a picture of heaven by seeing the Tabernacle of the Old Testament connected to the better covenant that we have today in Christ. “Lord Jesus, as You are the great High Priest, we ask for Your cleansing by Your blood that we may draw near with confidence Your throne of grace upon grace. Lord have mercy. Amen”
