Art looting is commonly recognized as a central feature of Nazi expropriation, in both the Third Reich and occupied territories. After the war, the famed Monuments Men (and women) recovered several hundred thousand pieces from the Germans' makeshift repositories in churches, castles, and salt mines. Well publicized restitution cases, such as that of Gustav Klimt's luminous painting featured in the film Woman in Gold, illustrate the legacy of Nazi looting in the art world today. But what happened to looted art that was never returned to its rightful owners? In France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, postwar governments appropriated the most coveted unclaimed works for display in museums, embassies, ministries, and other public buildings. Following cultural property norms of the time, the governments created custodianships over the unclaimed pieces, without using archives in their possession to carry out thorough provenance (ownership) research. This policy extended the dispossession of Jewish owners wrought by the Nazis and their collaborators well into the twenty-first century. The custodianships included more than six hundred works in Belgium, five thousand works in the Netherlands, and some two thousand in France. They included paintings by traditional and modern masters, such as Rembrandt, Cranach, Rubens, Van der Weyden, Tiepolo, Picasso, and Matisse. This appropriation of plundered assets endured without controversy until the mid-1990s, when activists and journalists began challenging the governments' right to hold these items, ushering in a period of cultural property litigation that endures to this day. Including interviews that have never before been published, Museum Worthy: Nazi Art Plunder in Postwar Western Europe (Oxford University Press, 2024) by Dr. Elizabeth Campbell deftly examines the appropriation of Nazi art plunder by postwar governments and highlights the increasingly successful postwar art recovery and restitution process. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Katarzyna von Bora i beczka śledzi.

In this episode, Sara Houghteling (special projects coordinator in the Research and Academic Program) speaks with Jennifer Nelson, a poet and scholar of early modern art at the University of Delaware. Through the lens of their first book on Holbein, and a second, forthcoming, on Cranach, Nelson describes how comparative studies of elite cultural production can allow us to the see the category of art as capacious, and capable of dismantling our concept of mastery. They offer concrete advice on writing—from tone, to endings, clarity, and decisive punctuation—and speak about their own writerly process, in which ideas often manifest first in poetry and later in prose.

Then, after seeing the business he founded in 2008 secure unicorn status back in April, von Cranach joins Meacham to discuss the evolution of Berlin-based OneFootball, which has rights in various territories to show leagues such as Portugal's Primeira Liga, the Belgian Pro League and Liga MX. Plus, having recently secured a deal to become the Bundesliga's non-fungible token (NFT) partner, von Cranach also explains how OneFootball plans to tap into the expertise of new investors such as Animoca Brands and Dapper Labs to maximise the Web 3.0 opportunity.

The illustration of the Harlot of Babylon (Revelation 17-18), however, is an altered version of the woodblock that Cranach originally used to illustrate the September edition. In the earlier printing, the woodcut had a clear Protestant agenda, as Cranach emphasized the harlot's identification with the Catholic Church by placing the triple tiara of the papacy upon her head. Whatever our creed or background, these stories are embedded in our consciousness. They inform our everyday speech and much of our art, music and literature – from Cranach’s depiction of Adam and Eve to C.S. Lewis’s Narnia stories and Stormzy’s ‘Blinded By Your Grace’.Together the Old Testament and the New Testament make up the Holy Bible. The Old Testament contains the sacred scriptures of the Jewish faith, while Christianity draws on both Old and New Testaments, interpreting the New Testament as the fulfilment of the prophecies of the Old. But which of these books is the greater?Arguing in favour of the Old Testament were novelist Howard Jacobson and writer Anne Atkins.Opposing them, arguing in favour of the New Testament, were the Rev. It doesn't take long at Mockingbird before one hears about… yes, here it comes… Law and Gospel. It is the name of the book after all. And while most of the fun is to be had in observing this versatile skeleton key to the human condition illustrated in everything from Finding Dory to David Bowie, or from Black Mirror to Axl Rose, the original Law/Gospel illustration, of course, came from Martin Luther's BFF, Lucas Cranach the Elder, as evidenced below. On the left, expectation and obligation – with help from sin and death – send a helpless streaker toward an unwelcome barbeque (that's Law). On the right, expectation is met by fulfillment. As the good news sinks in, a super-soaker of imputing blood jet streams from a side-wound, while sin and death get busted by a deputized sheep (that's Gospel). It would be perfectly serviceable to offer an extended talk on such wonderful illustrations, one of which bedazzles the front of Paul Zahl's Short Systematic Theology. Cranach, after all, painted several variations, each of which convey different nuances to Law/Gospel dynamic. Nevertheless, addled as I am by the oppressive law of academia, with its merciless demand for originality, I am incapable of delivering something so straightforward, which, at any rate, has been done well in several top-notch publications. Instead, I thought I'd look to artists from whom one would not expect such a message. Indeed, at the tenth anniversary conference I shall contend the Law/Gospel message can be found concealed in artists a long way from Wittenberg. The thrilling truth of grace emerges in art history just where you'd expect to hear something different (hence my title, “Hearing Law, Seeing Gospel”). What if the dynamic famously painted by Cranach could be found incognito in Orthodox icons, peeking from the unsurpassable achievements of Michelangelo and Pontormo, concealed in Catholic kitsch, even shining through the cult of creativity in contemporary art? It's all succinctly conveyed in the witty title, “camouflage Cranach,” really, but my wife said that sounded terrible.

Explore the art of Martin Luther Preaching (1547) by Cranach the Elder. For Oswald Bayer, the challenge of preaching is to always preach the gospel anew without saying anything new. Where does the sermon come from? What do we say? Recall that what the heart desires, the will chooses, and the mind justifies. Love is the fulfillment of the Law. Where does love come from? Consider that the Law cannot produce what it demands. In Romans 14:23 we read, “For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.” In Galatians 5:6 we read, “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.” Love comes from faith. Where does faith come from? Romans 10:17 tells us, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” What do we preach? We preach the Word. How is the one Word ministered so that it brings an end to the old and gives life to the new? According to the Reformers, the way the Word is ministered is in the form of God's two words, Law and Gospel. Where does the ministry of the Law and Gospel need to be aimed? It needs to be aimed at the heart. How do we speak to the human heart? Jack Kerouac’s writing is mentioned as an example. For Gerhard Forde, too much preaching is talking about God and preaching needs to be doing the living and active Word of God. Forde also noted that we should think about the sermon the way we think about the Sacraments. We can also think of the Sacraments as an event of the Word.

Explore the pastoral application. Only iustus answers the fundamental question of "Who am I?" What does God say when He looks at you? Luther stated, "Sin and death persist and the saints feel it." Consider pastorally knowing the true heart. The words of gospel assurance are for those in Christ. If we speak the promise of God and someone believes it applies to them - it applies to them - that is precisely what faith and assurance are. Consider a person's need for the Law. Does assurance ever become tangible? Consider John 1:17-18. 1 John 4:12 states, “No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.” For Luther, the ears are the only essential organ of the Christian. In Ephesians 6:16 we read, “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one . . .” Consider Ephesians 6:13-15. Explore the promises God makes in Scripture. In Psalm 103:12 we read, “. . . as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” Also in Romans 10:17 we read, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Recall the Law and Gospel diptych by Cranach the Elder. Discuss the borders between the Old Age and the New Creation. Does it make sense to talk of maturity, growth, or holiness in the Christian life? Do we obey our way across to the New Creation? Consider that the only way we get out of the Old Age is by death. Can we disobey our way out of Christ? We read in Romans 8:38-39, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Explore the Law and Gospel diptych by Cranach the Elder. Consider that God communicates through Word and Spirit. For Luther, God does not give His Spirit apart from the external Word. In Romans 7:11 we read, “For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.” God does His work through His Word and is only interested in putting the Old Adam in the grave.

Consider the topic of death and resurrection. Justification is how a sinner becomes righteous. Augustine held that we cannot initiate our own salvation. Who is righteous at the end of this process? Inherent righteousness is righteousness in the human being. The Catholic theology holds that God saves the old Adam and Eve from having to die. The Protestant Reformers reacted to this theology because of Scriptural, pastoral, and personal reasons. If it is ultimately the transformed sinner that God will say righteous to then it makes sense to be looking at ourselves to make the journey to the judgment seat. The Law and Gospel diptych by Cranach the Elder is referenced. Justification is what happens in God's work of salvation. It is not that He makes us better, but that He puts the old Adam to death and raises a new creature to life in Christ. Explore Galatians 2:16, 19-21. Paul describes it as a gift of Jesus. At judgment, God will be looking at the righteousness of Christ. For the Reformers, Jesus Christ as the Savior for sinners was lost in the Roman Catholic theology. In Galatians 2:17 we read, “But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners . . .” Paul shows us that God declares us righteous not on the basis of us but on the work done for us by Jesus Christ. Consider the ordo salutis or “order of salvation”. It is the logical way God accomplishes and applies His work of salvation to sinners. We read in Romans 8:30, “And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.”

Continue to explore the distinction between two verbal actions of God. Explore 1 Samuel 2 and Hannah's Song. We read in Romans 11:32, “For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.” For the Reformers, the Word of God which does these two works needs to be described as words distinguished as Law and Gospel. Recall the diptych “Law and Gospel” by Cranach the Elder. Consider Galatians 2:16, 19-21 and 2 Corinthians 3:6-7. Explore the giving of the Law. The whole generation who received and lived under the Law, die under the Law. Paul calls the Law a ministry of death. We read in Galatians 2:19, “For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God.” Explore what Romans 3:19-20 tells us. Consider that the Law does not remove sin, it reveals sin. Romans 4:15 states, “For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.” A transgression is an actual braking of an explicit commandment. Romans 5:20 tells us, "Now the law came in to increase the trespass . . ." Consider Romans 7:10-13.

Explore the Law and Gospel diptych by Cranach the Elder. Consider that our encounters with the living God are not all the same. Old Adam's experience of God's Word is an encounter with something that God has said. We have a pastoral necessity in preaching to discern which Adam we are talking to. Do they need to hear the Word of God that takes sinners to their grave or the Word of God that raises the dead to new life? For Luther, to the hard-hearted you minister God's Law; to the brokenhearted you minister God's gospel. What does it mean to minister the Law? The truth that the Law of God ministers is who we are in ourselves apart from Christ and in our sin.

His family name was “Black Earth,” as in the rich, fertile soil around his hometown. In German, Schwartzerdt. His first name was Philipp. He was born in Feb of 1497 at Bretten in SW Germany. His father was an armorer for an important German Count.Though tiny for his age, Philipp was brilliant. It seemed his body put all its energy into the development of his mind rather than his increasingly misshapen body. So at the age of only 10 he joined the scholars at the school of Pforzheim where he learned Latin, Greek and was introduced to Classical philosophy. When it became clear Philipp was something of a prodigy, his well-known humanist uncle Johann Reuchlin took a hand in his education as well. It was he who suggested the burgeoning young scholar follow the humanist fashion of the time and translate his German last name of Schwartzerdt into the Greek Melanchthon. When at the age of 11, both his father and grandfather died within a few days of each other, Philipp moved in with his grandmother. The next year, at aged 12, He entered the University of Heidelberg where he studied philosophy, rhetoric & astronomy. He quickly made his mark as a scholar of Greek, but was denied his master's degree for being too young. Shifting to the school in Tübingen, he continued his studies in law, mathematics and medicine. He was finally granted his Master's when he turned 19 and began studying theology. Under the influence of humanists like his uncle and Erasmus, Melanchthon became convinced true Christianity was something very different from the dry scholasticism of the Academics. When his attempts at reform were opposed in Tübingen, he accepted a call from Martin Luther to teach in the University at Wittenberg. At the ripe old age of 21, he took on the role of Professor of Greek. As he studied Scripture he became increasingly convinced Luther's ideas were theologically sound. There's a good chance the young Melanchthon helped clarify some of Luther's early ideas. He went with Luther to Leipzig for a debate with the Catholic Apologist Johann Eck in 1519. Though he only attended as a spectator, he inserted some of his own comments into the debate. Those comments were so telling, Eck felt the need to respond. After returning to Wittenberg, Melanchthon published an effective reply, basing his retorts in Scripture. When it became clear Philipp was a settled fixture at the University in Wittenberg and was proving himself an able assistant to Luther, the town's mayor gave consent for his daughter to marry him.In 1521, Melanchthon's lectures on Romans in the University became the basis of the Reformation's first volume on dogmatics, titled Theological Common Places. Seeing several revisions over the following years, the work dealt with themes like the relationship of the law and gospel, the bondage of the will, and justification by faith. From the outset of his tenure as Luther's theological side-kick, Melanchthon set a priority on educational reform. He advocated a need for fluency in Greek in theological training and a restructuring of universities along humanist lines. His plans were implemented in the reordering of the schools at Heidelberg & Tübingen, as well as new school at Marburg and Königsberg. Along with Luther, he called for each town to have a public school for the education of its young. In the last episode, we noted Luther's increasing cantankerousness as he aged. Some historians attribute this onerousness to his failing health and the constant pain his last few years saw him in. But even as a younger man, Luther was given to bouts of moodiness that swung between mania and depression, sometimes wildly! Philipp's even-keeled and exceedingly moderate nature seemed the perfect foil to Luther.Three famous painters gave their skills to capturing Melanchthon. Holbein, Cranach, and Albrecht Dürer, whose image seems more an attempt to capture Philipp's spiritual essence than his actual appearance. Contemporaries remarked Dürer capably achieved his goal. These images and the descriptions we have of him present a man who was likely not taller than 4'9” and somewhat misshapen. He was rarely in good health but was able to accomplish as much work as he did  because of his well-honed work habits and the extraordinary discipline he exercised. Though Melanchthon could have used his position to great personal advantage, he never accumulated wealth or possessions, but was known for his generosity and hospitality. His marriage was happy. He called his home "a little church," & peace was always found there by visitors. There was genuine affection between Philipp and his wife and 4 children. One visitor remarked on his stay with the Melanchthons that he happened by one of the rooms to see Philipp rocking a cradle with one hand while reading a book in the other.Master Melanchthon had many friends with whom he conversed often, frequently via correspondence, in which he reveals far more of himself and his ideas than he ever did publicly. In fact, he was so generous with his thoughts he frequently wrote speeches & treatises for others, granting them permission to claim them as their own.Melanchthon eschewed all jealousy, envy, slander, & sarcasm, though being the keen intellect he was, and dealing with oft times obstinate theological opponents he did we can be sure his witty repartee would have been entertaining. To put it succinctly, Melanchthon was The scholar's Scholar. We've probably all heard of, maybe even known, those people who have to be, or think they are, the smartest person in the room. With Melanchthon, he aspired to be, not the smartest, though there's little doubt he was, but his goal was to be the  noblest, the most honest & decent soul in the room. To that end he was brutal in his self-assessment, even to the point of acknowledging his faults to his opponents and critics. After the Diet of Worms and the obvious break with Rome it clearly meant, Luther seemed content to go his way and take the Church in Germany with him. Then, when other Reformers differed from Luther's positions on various issues, he seemed willing to split from them as well. Melanchthon worked hard at affecting a reconciliation with both papists and other Reformers, if only they would be willing to negotiate on the basis of Scripture. He & Luther took part in an meeting at Marburg in 1529 with the Zwingli and the Swiss Reformers in an attempt to find a common ground. The Colloquy blew up over their different understandings of the nature of the Eucharist. Melanchthon was able to hammer out agreement with Martin Bucer and Southern Germans on the same issue in the Wittenberg Concord in 1536. He contributed to the 13 Articles Lutherans and Anglicans agreed on 2 yrs later. Having achieved unity with Bucer, the 2 participated in discussions at Hagenau & Worms that eventually led to a monumental Colloquy at Regensburg of 1541.  It was there that Cardinal Contarini made a serious bid for reconciliation with the Reformers, When it became clear there were issues both sides could NOT compromise on, the split between Rome and Protestants was final. While Melanchthon seems a committed Ecumenist in these efforts, a decade later when Thomas Cranmer called for a Reformation-wide ecumenical conference in London, he was less enthusiastic. But there's good reason for that. He was being accused by hardcore supports of Luther of betraying the cause in weakening Lutheran teaching. And Philipp's desire for harmony ought not be understood as his being soft on error. As early as 1522, he argued with Luther's other assistant at Wittenberg, Andreas Carlstadt who, while Luther was in hiding at Wartburg, assumed control of the Reformation movement in Luther's absence. Carlstadt's attitude was that the reforms ought to go forward as swiftly as possible. The problem was, the nobles and rulers who were generally in favor of a break with Rome, found the pace of reform Carlstadt urged too much too soon. Even Luther advocated a slower pace. So he left the Wartburg to return to Wittenberg and dress Carlstadt down. Andreas stayed for a time but, frustrated that the Reforms he knew were needed weren't being enacted swiftly enough, he left to spread his ideas of Radical Reformation across German & Switzerland. He eventually landed in in the University of Basel.Along with Luther, Melanchthon was instrumental in formulating the 1530 Augsburg Confession defining the tenants of Lutheranism. In 1540, Melanchthon issued a revised edition of the Confession with edits many Lutherans found objectionable. He was accused by Matthias Flacius of selling Luther out after the great Reformer's death. Melanchthon adopted a more moderate view than Luther on predestination and the nature of the Lord's Presence in Communion. His supporters were scornfully called Philippists. These attacks caused the gentle and uncontentious soul considerable distress in his last years. But after his death in 1560, Melanchthon's essential unity within Lutheranism was vindicated and he was buried beside his friend.Between Luther & Melanchthon, the later was more the scholar while the former was more the man of action. The steady Melanchthon was the perfect foil to   the mercurial Luther. Their friendship owed much to that fact as each recognized the value the other very different style provided for the massive undertaking they'd assumed. While this may be over-simplifying it, we might say Luther was the face and voice of the Early Reformation while Melanchthon was its brains and heart. Melanchthon's role was best served when he was the quiet one behind the scenes. When Luther was gone and he was called on to step up and take the lead, he proved unequal to the task. Make no mistake, no one doubted his piety & integrity. It's just that he did not possess the force of character Luther had.Still, there's a case to be made that had it not been for Philipp Melanchthon, there wouldn't have been a Martin Luther and the Reformation as we've come to know it.So – the world would be a very different place.
