Today we continue our study through the book of Acts, with a stop in Acts chapter two. The day of Pentecost has arrived, and with it, the Holy Spirit. Without question this is one of the most significant events in the Bible, as the third member of the Holy Trinity descended upon the early Christian Church. As we will see in today's message, the work of the Holy Spirit began immediately, and the results were quite startling to those who witnessed them.
Part 5. 17th Century. The Fight for Freedom of Worship An intensive look at the Christian Church down the ages, providing powerful messages for our own times. Many church members know little or nothing about the story of Christianity between the New Testament period and today. They therefore may not realise how much they have been influenced by traditions developed during that time. These can have both a negative and positive benefit. Negative, because ‘those who forget history are condemned to relive it'. Most of the mistakes we make and errors we fall into have happened before and we can learn from our forefathers to avoid them. Positive, because we have such a rich heritage it would be folly to ignore. We can draw inspiration and examples from the spiritual giants who went before us and, after all, we can look forward to meeting them personally in glory.

Tune in here to this Friday edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program by speaking with Pete Kaliner on the latest edition of The Friday Hangover. He begins the discussion by asking whether the "Luigi Effect", also known as "falling in love with criminals", might take hold in the case of Tyler Robinson, the shooter who killed Charlie Kirk. Pete responds by noting that it’s already happening, pointing to people on social media who are celebrating Kirk’s death. He adds that this kind of behavior began with Luigi Mangione, and that many who praised his actions faced no reputational consequences. Brett and Pete go on to discuss the resurgence of fascistic rhetoric in Right-wing politics, the radicalization of Tyler Robinson, and Pete’s recent visit to the local NPR station. Later, Brett shares a message of hope for America in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s murder. To illustrate this, he highlights the enduring presence of the Christian Church, an institution that has stood strong for over two thousand years. He also condemns those who are celebrating Kirk’s killing, pointing out a common trend among them: they believe their social media posts are hidden or anonymous, but in reality, they are not. In the second hour, Brett is joined by former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley to discuss his thoughts on the tragic death of Charlie Kirk. Whatley emphasizes that it’s important to remember Kirk as a family man, a husband and father of two. He expresses relief that authorities have arrested Robinson, noting that it brings a sense of closure to the American public. Brett and Whatley also discuss how the “whatever it takes” mentality is unacceptable, particularly when it comes to dealing with political disagreement and personal anger. We're also joined by American Sniper author Scott McEwen to discuss the murder of Charlie Kirk and the state of America following the 24th anniversary of September 11. McEwen, who knew Kirk personally, was deeply affected by his death. He describes Kirk as an unassuming man who lacked ego and carried himself with humility. McEwen even compares Kirk's death to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., arguing that both men were influential figures who preached a message of love during pivotal times in American history. Just as Dr. King spread a message of unity and compassion, McEwen notes that Kirk did the same when speaking at events and engaging with students on college campuses. When reflecting on September 11, Brett points out that McEwen was close with Chris Kyle and others who defended America's freedom in the aftermath of the attacks 24 years ago. He asks McEwen whether America is safer now or a larger target for terrorism. McEwen responds that our target is growing, because America remains a beacon of light to the rest of the world. The book of Acts has previously been described as “The Holy Spirit of God - working through the Word of God - in the hearts of the People of God.” That's an appropriate description of the goings-on here in Acts as the post-crucifixion Christian Church was just being established. Many Bible scholars have also turned to Acts one, verse eight as the key statement of the facts --- in Acts - the Holy Spirit descended upon the believers on the day of Pentecost.

The Night School, Series 17 (September through November 2025) - Three Johns - Wise Ones from East of UsThe Night School has always been about the “Guests” whom we invite to be with us, people often from the deep past whom we meet in the texts that they left behind when they went to be among our Ancestors. Why have we invited “three Johns”; that is, the Evangelist, Chrysostom, and Newman? We chose them upon learning that for the first time in this 21st century, the Catholic Church will elect someone as a Doctor of the Church. Pope Leo XIV had indicated in July 2025, that he would place St. John Henry Newman among these greatest and wisest of Christian teachers. So in celebration of this, we have placed him, in Series 17, with two other Doctors of the Church. What is a “Doctor of the Church”?“ A title regularly given since the Middle Ages to certain Christian theologians of outstanding merit and acknowledged saintliness. Originally the Western theologians Gregory the Great, Ambrose, Augustine, and Jerome were held to be the ‘four doctors' par excellence; but in later times the list has been gradually increased to nearly 40. There are four female doctors, with Teresa of Ávila named first, in 1970.” [Matthew J. Mills, “Doctors of the Church,” in The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, ed. Andrew Louth (Oxford, United Kingdom; New York: Oxford University Press, 2022) 565–566.]

Last weekend, we began a new series asking, “What does the church look like?”—the unchanging pieces like Jesus, good stories, and the Spirit. This Sunday, we've got three chairs. They represent people you meet each week. People like you... actually, you. Together, these three chairs tell the story of what God is doing at Cape Cod Church and how you fit into that story. Ephesians 2:11-22 We reviewed the Biblical history that led to the development of the Christian Church, before looking at 3 main aspects of the Church that Paul points out in this Ephesians passage. 1- the Church is the household of God; 2- it is built on the foundation of apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone; 3- the Church is God's Temple. Since October 7, 2023, the tide of antisemitism has been rising around the world. Bluntly, antisemitism is Jew-hatred. Sadly, the spread of Jew hatred is emerging even within our Jewish Messiah's community, the Christian Church. A monk, mystic, and defender of Hesychasm, Palamas taught that the path to God is found not only in theology and doctrine, but in prayer, silence, and communion with the divine. His distinction between the “essence” and “energies” of God became a cornerstone of Orthodox theology. But how should evangelical Christians view Palamas today? Delivered by Pastor Brad Smith 02/09/25. People become very independent once they leave school and start fending for themselves. This independence flows through to all parts of their lives and often they cut themselves off from vital knowledge and assistance as a result. This further entrenches the concept of "self only" support and people become hardened against good advice. The great tragedy of the Christian Church has been in the adopting of this policy of "man knows best". The concept of building the church was based, in principle, upon the fact that man knows nothing, the answer is in the Lord. God offered Moses a rod, which was to be his authorization during his lifetime. The rod was the power of God to the man of God: also exemplifying the words of God and was always present when God acted. The rod, of course, was representative of the Holy Spirit which was poured out on the day of Pentecost, and the "type" became reality. Without this rod, Moses was nothing, and without the Spirit we are nothing... it is the power and authority from God. How many times when pressures arise do we grumble about our circumstances? "We are better off in our old world religion... I I preferred my life the way it was before we were Spirit filled"; these are common statements that people make to their oversight when they don't like the way they are being led. Moses was also pressed to change God's directions, but God said no. Scriptural References. Exo 15:15-16, Job 21:9-13, Psa 23:4, Joh 14:26, Jer 10:23-24. There are for kinds of men. Boys, Evil men, passive men and good men. At first, it seems obvious that the evil man is the worst—but the truth is, passivity may be even more dangerous. It's sneaky. It masks itself as humility or care, but in reality, it's laziness and abdication of responsibility. In this episode, we'll help you evaluate where you fall in these categories and challenge you to step up as the kind of man who glorifies God through bold, faithful leadership. 1. One of Tim's slides read: “the Israelites decided their God must be in conflict with the way the world is typically organized. [& that] God‘s blessing is not distributed according to birth order strength, or fertility, but is for all people who are willing to be vulnerable and to love…”What does this revelation mean for us today as Christians? Where do you see overlap or a through-line between this understanding of the ancient Jews, & our understanding of God today (as Christians)?Re-read the entirely of the slide again as a group. What's the significance of vulnerability in this paradigm? Do you think of vulnerability as a component of your faith? How might you explain its relevance (or irrelevance) according to how you see it?To what degree do you see this revelation or idea as important or meaningful in our modern day engagement in our faith? Share about why. 2. Tim also talked about the ways in which the Israelites understood God as being‘ meaningfully connected to or aligned with those who are marginalized and disempowered (e.g. the many barren women, & second-sons whose stories are told in the Hebrew Bible). He shared that the Israelites believed that God wasn't using them in spite of their flaws, but because of them.If we hope to embody the same relationship to God and be useful to him in ways that mirror our ancient faith-ancestors, how do you conceive of doing so as people of great privilege living in Johnson County Kansas in 2025?What makes that difficult for us? In what areas might we have blinders? Are there areas in which we might have unique clarity? In what ways do you think you might be especially useful to God because of your flaws rather than in spite of them? Are there ways that you think the Christian Church as a whole can be especially useful because of its flaws rather than in spite of them?3. Tim asked, “who do you identify with most in this story?” Take a moment to reflect on each of the 4 main characters: Jacob, Esau Isaac, and Rebecca. Then answer his question: Who do you identify with most? why?Is there anyone that you feel like you can't identify with at all? Share about why.
The Piggy Bank, that most useful tool in teaching thrift and saving for a rainy day. The idea has been around for centuries, but the concept of a little slotted-back pig in every child's room is pretty recent and from the unlikely starting point of White Cloud, Kansas. The bank was inspired by Pete the Pig, sold by Wilbur Chapman to lend aid to the world's lepers. Pete's inspiration eventually inspired over a million dollars donated toward that cause. In this episode of the 'Al Hamashmaut' (On Meaning) podcast, Adv. Tamir Dortal hosts Pastor Greg Locke, a prominent and outspoken evangelical leader from the United States, for a compelling and unfiltered conversation about Christian support for Israel, the battle for global public opinion, and the spiritual roots of modern antisemitism.Having visited Israel 13 times since October 7th, Pastor Locke pulls no punches. He dives deep into why he views the antisemitism spreading on social media not as a political trend, but as an ancient "demonic spirit" that has taken a new form. He delivers a blistering critique of Israel's public relations strategy, arguing that it is losing the information war by failing to use the right tools to combat the "fake news monster". Locke also calls out former allies, naming prominent conservative figures in the U.S. like Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson, whom he now describes as "flaming Jew haters."What is the ancient 'demonic spirit' he claims is fueling modern antisemitism? How can Israel strategically use social media influencers to win the PR war? And why does he believe that "Replacement Theology" - the idea that the Christian Church has replaced Israel in God's covenant - is one of the greatest threats to long-term support for the Jewish state? This episode provides a rare, unfiltered look into the mind of one of Israel's most formidable and uncompromising American allies. Listeners will gain a unique perspective on the forces at play in American politics and global media, offering a deeper understanding of the international battlefield where Israel's reputation is fought for every single day.00:00:00 Why a Pastor Wears a Star of David00:01:40 The Ancient Demonic Roots of Antisemitism00:04:46 How Israel Can Win the Social Media War00:09:27 What Happens When Americans See Israel For Themselves00:12:35 The Deep Divide Between Evangelicals and Catholics on Israel00:15:40 'Replacement Theology': The Greatest Threat to Christian Support00:17:57 Conservative Leaders Who Became "Flaming Jew Haters"00:20:24 Israel's Strategic Mistake in the Gaza War00:27:36 The Greatest Miracle in History: Jewish Survival00:30:51 The Muslim Brotherhood's Threat to America and Europe#podcast #על_המשמעות Support the show◀️ פרסמו אצלנו: לקבלת הצעת מחיר - פנו למתן
