I am incredibly excited for you to listen to this episode. I was fortunate enough to be able to meet and speak with Dr. Robb Kelley, Founder and CEO of the Robb Kelly Recovery Group based in San Antonio Texas. He also has offices in Dallas, Zurich Switzerland and London in the UK. He has appeared on countless television and radio interviews, including an episode of daytime series, The Doctors on CBS (https://www.thedoctorstv.com/videos/supervised-heroin-facility). Dr. Kelly's story of addiction is one of homelessness, loss of family and six suicide attempts. In a moment of his life, that he will describe later in the episode, Dr. Kelly had what I believe is a concrete interaction with God. This interaction and the promise he received from a mysterious gentleman named John has manifested into Dr. Kelly's continued success in the recovery world. He has a 97% success rate helping alcoholics and addicts recover from their suffering and he even provides a money back guarantee, something you don't see at all in the world of recovery. In episode 19 I sit down and speak with my friend from Cafe RE, Carrie who lives in Denver Colorado. After Carrie's divorce several years ago, she found herself leaning more and more on alcohol to cope with the feelings associated with the end of her marriage and the new life she had as a result of that. Now sober since January 20, 2020, she is thriving and enjoying her new life Alcohol Free (AF)! In episode 18, I sit down with a musician friend of mine, Joel, to discuss his 6 years of sobriety. He shares that, even with plenty of time under his belt, he had a relapse moment. But the important point is he said, "If I still feel this way tomorrow, I will drink". Spoiler: He didn't drink. We rarely, if ever, feel the exact same way 'tomorrow' that we did today. If we keep pushing our relapse to 'tomorrow' then we will never drink. Tomorrow never comes, each moment you live in is TODAY. My friend and Recovery Coach, Roy, sat down and talked to me about his life, addiction and 19 years of recovery. He has ben a great source of support, guidance and motivation during the last 9 months and I am grateful I have gotten to know him an be coached by him. It is very critical to build a network of people who support nd understand your journey when you embark on the beautiful but tough road of recovery from substance abuse. Included in that network should be sponsors, coaches and mentors who help push you along the way. Please like, follow and provide a great rating if you are so inclined. I speak with Chris, a chef from outside NYC, about his addiction and recovery. I also start the episode disclosing that I am in a "blah" mood. Which is completely ok. Moods come and go. Recognize them and move on. Impermanence is the only thing permanent. Oh and I am launching this episode on my 9 month anniversary from my last drink of alcohol. What a ride baby! In this week's episode I interview a member and administrator of the Recovery Elevator podcast and the Cafe RE communities, Kerrie Mac. She is a fixture on our Zoom webinars and inspires many of us during our recovery journey. She tells us that unlike myself, and some others I interviewed, her drinking was not social at all...in fact, quite anti-social. But in recovery she has blossomed into an outgoing and beautiful person in the communities I belong. I enjoyed this chat and I know you will also. Paul talks about his journey from one of few non-mormon kids in Utah, to his ownership of a bar in Grenada Spain and ultimately to his recovery from alcohol addiction. Paul has utilized common recovery methods, such as support communities as well as uncommon methods, such as plant medicine from shaman's in Costa Rica. His story is sure to entertain and teach. On April 28, 2011, my Aunt, Karen Beckham (Nannie) passed away from a 3 year battle with ovarian cancer. To commemorate the 9th anniversary of her passing, I have a discussion with my sister, Jennifer, who is a highly credentialed trauma counselor. Jennifer has her own psychotherapy practice in Leonardtown Maryland. We all have to deal with grief throughout our life, and grief isn't always associated with the loss of someone. It could be something, whether a relationship, a job or even an addictive behavior. Often times we want to suppress those feelings, thinking we should be stoic in the face of that loss. But crucial to our healing and emotional progression is our ability to "feel the feels", process them and heal. My sister has a unique perspective, being a professional who normally sits in the counselor chir, but you will hear that she also had to process that grief. This is the story of her dealing with that loss. In this episode, I sit down and talk with Dan. He is an entrepreneur, philosopher and a friend who has a dual diagnosis with bipolar disorder and substance abuse. He is a great guy and I have known him for just over a year, from my first attendance at FAVOR Greenville. One thing from this episode I hope you absorb is the degree to which substance abuse and mental health disorders go hand in hand. Perhaps, this podcast has and will continue to educate you, the listener, on the complicated nature of substance abuse. It is far from a personal failing or lack of will power. More often than not, the individual is seeking to suppress pain, trauma or insecurities to live in an increasingly complex world. If you or someone you know is dealing with substance abuse disorder, please know that there are many resources to help you or them overcome these struggles and achieve a fulfilling life. For episode 2, I am starting an on-going segment called "Chats with Dr. Bill". He is a friend of mine who is a physicist. Personally, when you have a friend who is a physicist, you ask them questions and ask for explanations. Think of it as saving tuition, you learn the concepts without having to enroll at MIT. I want to chat with Bill about bring a cross-section of physics and how it may (or may not) impact everyday life and things. In this segment Bill and I discuss how the microwave oven works. We use it all the time, to pop our popcorn, heat up our pizza, boil water and a ton of other things. But what's happening on the inside to make those things heat up? Inquiring minds what to know...or maybe just me... I interview Trish about her recovery from alcoholism. Interview was conducted on Friday April 10th during the Covid-19 pandemic. We conducted the interview via Zoom. Trish came to speak to my Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) when I sought help initially for substance abuse in January of 2019. She was a speaker at that meeting and although he doesn't remember me in this class, she and another speaker were instrumental in helping me find FAVOR of Greenville, an all pathways addiction recovery organization. She is such a wonderful person and I have truly enjoyed becoming friends with Trish. We both were on the FAVOR bowling league this past fall and it is the friendships and activities in recovery that so many of us use to rise out of the ashes of addiction. If you or someone you know suffers addiction, please know that THERE IS A WAY OUT! You deserve to rise from that despair and build a life that you are proud of. I encourage you to seek out recovery avenues in your area. You can find those resources such as AA, NA, Al-Anon and others via the internet. If you need help I am available to assist you or your loved ones. Please reach out to me at recoveryrisingpodcast@gmail.com and I will get you some contacts.
