In this live-streamed episode, Stef and Sarah explore the nuanced world of cravings — what drives them, how they differ from binge or overeating urges, and why they're often more complicated than they seem. They discuss the physiological and emotional undercurrents behind cravings, from hormonal shifts to nervous system dysregulation, weaving in personal experiences — including Stef's two most memorable pregnancy cravings. The conversation unpacks how cravings show up differently for restrictors versus permitters, how appetite and craving aren't always the same thing, and what it looks like to approach cravings from a more regulated, self-led mindset. Rather than reducing cravings to something to fix or fear, this episode invites a deeper, more compassionate understanding of them — one that honors both biology and psychology. In this episode, Stef and Sarah are talking about body image fluctuations. They kick things off with Stef admitting she's been in a bit of a funk lately, which has her feeling some body image blues. They chat about how our moods can totally mess with how we see our bodies—like when you're tired or anxious, everything feels heavier and more irritating. Stef talks about the importance of recognizing these mood shifts and working on regulating them before trying to 'fix' anything else. They also tackle the topic of 'floods'—those visceral reactions to body image triggers—and share some strategies for managing them when they hit. They also highlight the confusing mix of emotions when weight changes feel different depending on the context. Sarah shares an amusing anecdote about feeling self-conscious in a string bikini.  Stef touches on her past struggle with 'reverse body dysmorphia,' where she clung to an outdated image of her younger self. They wrap up with some thoughts on how seasons influence our body image and the power of gradual exposure. Send us a textEpisode 255 –  Interview with Charles Meyer, Porn Addiction Recovery CoachCharles is on a mission to end fatherlessness in American homes, and eventually worldwide.Based on the West Coach of Florida, Charles Meyer became a Porn Addiction Recovery Coach because of his own struggles with addiction and a strong sense of purpose from God. For 12 years, he battled with pornography and drug addiction, feeling empty despite having everything he thought he wanted. He tried to fill the void with various vices, but they never brought true happiness. He found freedom in his faith, but it was also a long journey of healing from trauma, faulty beliefs, false identities, and reconciliation. His entire life had to change in order for freedom to be truly sustainable. He was a mess, but now claims freedom, there are no chains holding him back. The turning point in his life came when he found freedom from his addictions. Charles realized that the solution wasn't in external things but in having a genuine relationship with God. This discovery inspired him to help others break free from their own addictions and find real purpose and fulfillment. At first, Charles wasn't sure how to best serve others, but he kept seeking guidance from God. Over time, it became clear that his mission was to help husbands and fathers overcome addiction and become the leaders their families needed. He believes that ending fatherlessness in American households requires men to be free from addiction and to lead by example.Charles is passionate about his mission and wants to provide the tools, support, and community needed for total freedom from addiction. Through his coaching, he aims to transform lives and help others experience the same freedom and purpose he found.Online Connections:https://www.instagram.com/freedomworkercharles https://www.facebook.com/FreedomWorkerCharles1 Know Thyself Coaching info:   Email: newfuturecoaching@gmail.com acourageousrecovery.com

Stef sparked the idea due to a client's suggestion to dive deeper into the emotional aspects tied to realizing one can't diet anymore. They chat about their personal experiences and how differently they feel about the inability to diet. Stef shares that she often felt anger, stemming from the frustrating feeling of being controlled by an uncontrollable force. Sarah, on the other hand, felt sadness and a bit of unease about not being able to diet, describing a conflict between what she believed and what she felt. The discussion then shifts to the process and emotions tied to this realization. Stef talks about how her next phase of evolution might be becoming softer with herself, while Sarah contemplates if she should be more disciplined. They both recognize that regardless of the approach, the feeling of trying their best despite obstacles is very sobering. Both hosts touch on the grief associated with recognizing they can't diet anymore—an emotion that only surfaced fully during their recovery journeys. Your brain is not producing adequate amounts of neurotransmitters.   Neurotransmitters control your reality–your mood, memory, thinking and behavior.    And when your brain has what it needs, you naturally feel relaxed and alert, focused and positive–even happy.    But when your brain does not have what it needs, you get symptoms like anxiety, depression, anger and irritability, apathy, low energy and motivation, sleep problems and loss of memory, focus and attention.    An inadequate supply of neurotransmitters is why you have the urge to use substances like sugar, alcohol, caffeine and prescription medications to cope or compensate.   The good news is that nutrients you need are inexpensive and widely available. And clinical studies show that following simple nutritional protocols gives you FIVE TO ONE ODDS of overcoming substance use disorders.   In this episode, I give you a basic overview of the vitamins, minerals and amino acid supplements that can restore your sense of confidence and control.    —Click here to BOOK A DISCOVERY CALL if you're ready to fully commit to your personal growth and do the work to get emotionally sober. Sarah and Stef delve into the complex emotions around dieting and the struggles of non-diet living.   To kick things off, Sarah brings up the topic of feeling stuck between wanting to diet and feeling like you can't, even if you wanted to. This sets the stage for a thoughtful discussion about how dieting, and the decision to step away from it, evokes a range of emotions—from failure to empowerment.   Stef offers personal anecdotes and client stories, revealing how the dieting mindset is often ingrained in us from a young age, making it a tough cycle to break. She highlights the difference between making an active decision to stop dieting and feeling like you simply can't keep up with it anymore.   Throughout the episode, both Sarah and Stef share their own journeys and how they moved from a place of restrictive eating to embracing a non-diet lifestyle. Along the way, they touch on common pitfalls, like fantasizing about the benefits of dieting, only to be reminded of its psychological toll.   The duo also explores how important it is to find a middle ground. This is not about completely giving up or indulging without thought but about finding a balanced, mindful approach to eating that nurtures both body and soul.   One standout moment is when they discuss the concept of agency—and the sticky truth that empowerment can indeed come from weight control -- but it can also come from self-alliance.   Looking for a  course about how to fold in health considerations after recovery without a diet culture lens? Additionally, they touch on broader themes, such as the idea of fathers wanting to feel appreciated yet struggling with their vulnerabilities, and how these dynamics play out in their children's lives. The conversation also explores the effects of absent fathers, touching on how such wounds could manifest in hypersexualization, anxious attachment, and hyper-independence. Melissa, a therapist from Michigan who also has ADHD, explains how her disordered relationship with food began at a young age when she couldn't "control" her sweet cravings and inherited shame about this part of herself. Working to integrate all of her Parts through Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, Melisssa worked towards an Intutive Eating model and allowed herself to incorporate all foods in a radical departure from her OA food plan. Melissa Persechini is a licensed therapist specializing in trauma and addiction. With a Master's Degree in Social Work and 17 years of clinical experience, she integrates techniques such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness, and somatic approaches. She founded the Women and Girls Empowerment Center in 2015 after noticing women shared common threads of inner strength and resiliency. In this episode, Sarah and Stef explore how body acceptance might feel like defeat for many who have struggled to change their bodies and feel oppressed by their circumstances. They dissect how acceptance is a proactive practice that differs from the feeling of defeat, which is reactionary and involves a perceived loss against external forces. Stef shares personal insights on how acceptance can feel oppressive when it seems to invalidate self-advocacy, while Sarah discusses how resistance to acceptance often stems from fear and shame. The conversation touches on therapeutic techniques to work through resistance, the importance of validating and allowing resistant feelings, and the transformative power of willingness and allowing reality as it is without judgment. They also talk about the importance of having a supportive space where resistance can be discussed openly and without the urge to “fix” it immediately. Towards the end, they discuss real-world applications of these concepts, bringing in examples like discomfort on airplanes due to body size and personal triggers in relation to diet culture. They also investigate how contextualizing experiences as non-personal and understanding biological and psychological underpinnings can help shift perspectives from defeat to empowerment. Recovery Matters Podcast Episode 167 | Tajay's story begins with a life-changing arrest, leading him to outpatient treatment and, ultimately, to CCAR. He didn't initially seek recovery—it found him. While in IOP, he struggled with staying sober, turning to alcohol as a coping mechanism. However, deep down, he knew he wanted more for himself. His commitment to trying something differentled him to school, where a conversation about psychology unexpectedly introduced him to the idea of becoming a recovery coach. This opened the door to a new world, and through CCAR, Tajay found the support, structure, and inspiration to rebuild his life. One of the most significant changes in his recovery journey was reevaluating friendships and relationships. He realized that many of his past connections were built around substance use, and changing his circle was necessary. He now values friendships based on mutual respect and personal growth rather than peer pressure or partying. Relationships, particularly romantic ones, remain tricky, especially when dating someone who isn't in recovery. However, he emphasizes the importance of healthy communication and setting boundaries.Education played a crucial role in his transformation. What started as a simple way to stay busy turned into a passion. Tajay became deeply involved on campus, founding the Legacy Club to help students network, connect, and take their careers seriously from day one. His belief that “it's not just what you know, but who you know” helped him secure opportunities, despite not yet having a degree. He encourages students to build relationships, take advantage of resources, and stay open to new possibilities.Beyond education, Tajay found purpose in entrepreneurship and music. His first venture, a clothing brand focused on positive affirmations, gave him his first taste of running a business. While it was a learning experience, it laid the foundation for his current passion—creating and promoting music. Initially hesitant, he pushed past self-doubt and began sharing his music on social media, even shooting a music video for one of his songs, Love Life. His new goal is to combine music, merch, and motivation, using his platform to inspire others.Throughout the conversation, Tajay emphasizes that recovery is not easy, but it's worth it. He describes recovery as "armor"—something that protects him from life's hardships. He acknowledges that early recovery is overwhelming, especially when emotions come rushing back after years of numbing pain with substances. However, he encourages anyone on the fence about recovery to stick with it. His biggest message? "Don't quit before the miracle happens."Tajay's life is proof that even when things seem impossible, recovery can open doors you never imagined.Timestamps:00:00 – Intro & Tajay's background02:00 – Getting arrested & his first steps into recovery06:00 – How addiction shaped his friendships & how he had to change his circle10:00 – Finding education as a new path & becoming a leader on campus14:00 – The "Get Out of Here" mindset vs. realizing it's about changing yourself18:00 – Entrepreneurship, music, and using creativity in recovery23:00 – The moment he knew he had to go all in on sobriety28:00 – What he'd say to someone struggling: “Don't quit before the miracle happens.” ----Across the Web----

This week we're celebrating our 250th podcast by taking you through our top 10 podcasts. The episodes that have had the most downloads since we started the podcast back in 2020. So coming in at number 10 with 2,500 downloads is Sobriety Coach Lori Massicot. Lori is the host of a podcast called 50 and Beyond and like me she's convinced that ditching the booze is one of the very best things we can do for ourselves as we get older. Her episode is called Why We Need to Ditch the Drink in Midlife, and we released that one in December 2021. Here's a clip. I did a second episode with Laurie when we listed the 15 signs that you need to take a break from the booze. Signs that Laurie and I ignored for far too long. That one was released on January the 27th 2024 Coming in at number 9 is Dr. Loretta Breuning, who helped me to unpack the cause of my own early sobriety blues. Have a listen to the first interview I did with her, which was in August 2021. Here's a clip Loretta also did an interview with me very recently to talk about her new book, which is called Why You're Unhappy – that one was released on 20th January last year Since we last ranked our top ten which was in February last year we've had 2 new entries One of those entries has come in at number 8 with 2756 downloads its called:- Alcohol and your Body Fat with James Swanwick James had some great advice around Alcohol's Effects on Sleep and Weightgain He explained how Alcohol consumption can compromise sleep quality, metabolism, and overall health.  It can also disrupt the body's natural processes, leading to weight gain, reduced productivity, and increased cravings for unhealthy foods. Heres a clip Our other new entry along with James came in at number 7 with 2800 downloads and is called RECOVERY IT'S A BRAIN THING – which is the name of the book by my two guests – David & Susan Kenney They run a program to train Recovery Coaches and one of our Tribe members Darren was so impressed by their approach he signed up for their course. Darren is now a qualified Recovery Coach so if you'd like to book in for a free consultation you can go to his website which is pauserecovery.com – Coming in at number 6 is Stanford Psychiatrist Dr Anna Lembke with 2851 listens Anna has written a top selling book called Dopamine Nation. It's an awesome book, which I highly recommend if you're interested in the science of addiction. Her explanation of the pain pleasure balance is superb. That episode is called, Why We Get Addicted, and it came out in November, 2023. Here's a clip. At number 5 we have Neuroscientist Staci Danford with 2890 downloads Stacy taught us about our lizard brain and how we need to manage it before it manages us. She even recommended that we give it a name. She calls hers Ernie. My interview with Stacy came out in August 2021. Here's a clip Next up at number 4 is a firm favourite with Tribe Sober – Ken Middleton who had 2,906 downloads for his “How Drinking Limits our Potential” episode He's the author of Bamboozled, which has the clever subtitle of How Alcohol Makes Fools of Us All,  Do grab a copy if you haven't yet read it. Such a brilliant description of how we've been manipulated by big alcohol for decades. I often quote Ken, who says, "even if alcohol doesn't destroy us, it will limit our potential".  His Tribe Sober episode is called How Alcohol Limits Your Potential - released in April 2023 here is a clip. Ken was also one of our guests back in November 2020 when he shared his own story and explained the science behind alcohol dependence. And why drinking regularly for 20 years means you're very likely to develop a problem Next up at number 3 is me, with our very first podcast episode, which was released in May 2020 to celebrate my fifth soberversary. – that got 3,135 downloads At number 2 we have the brilliant William Porter with 3,675 downloads William is a lawyer with a passion for the science behind alcohol dependence, and he's written two books, Alcohol Explained and Alcohol Explained 2. They're both essential reading, and I think the more we understand the damage that alcohol does to our bodies and brains, the less likely we are to want to drink it. His episode is called, Managing Cravings, and came out in December 2023. Here's a clip Finally, hogging the number one slot with an incredible 3, 877 downloads is Australian sobriety coach, Catherine Elliott. It's called "How to Stop Binge Drinking" and came out in June 2022. Here's a clip Like me, Catherine's had breast cancer, which prompted us to do an episode together recently. Because neither of us had realized that our heavy drinking was putting us at risk of breast cancer, so we celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month by having a conversation about it, spreading the word to other women that more than three glasses of wine a week increases your risk of breast cancer. We called it "Drink Less for Your Breasts" and it was released in October 2023. So that's our top 10. I'd like to say a big thank you to all our listeners. Welcome to Episode 186 of "Life After Diets," where Stef and Sarah dive into a topic we've surprisingly not tackled before—GLP-1 medications and their implications. GLP-1, commonly known from brands like Ozempic, has been generating buzz for its use in weight management. In this episode, Stef and Sarah unpack the complexities of this tender subject, sharing their personal and professional insights. We kick things off by reminiscing about a previously unreleased episode that touched on similar themes. From there, Sarah candidly discusses the difficulties she faces when speaking about GLP-1s, including the delicate balance of expressing personal opinions without unduly influencing listeners. Stef and Sarah highlight their different perspectives on the scientific, psychological, and societal impacts of these medications, especially their effects on those with disordered eating patterns. The conversation touches on the lack of long-term studies, the potential for misuse, and the ethical dilemmas surrounding GLP-1s. They also explore how societal pressures and weight stigma can influence one's decision to use these medications. In a thoughtful exchange, Stef shares experiences from clients who have benefitted and those who have struggled with GLP-1s, emphasizing the need for self-awareness and personalized decision-making. Throughout the episode, our hosts aim to provide a safe and non-judgmental space for discussing these medications, recognizing the varied experiences and choices of individuals. The episode concludes with reflections on the broader implications for society and our health systems, expressing a blend of skepticism and hope for future understanding. This episode delves into topic of body checking—when individuals habitually monitor their body size or shape. Sarah and Stef share personal experiences, discussing their different relationships with body checking. Stef candidly describes how body checking was a way to manage her anxiety and provides insights into her journey towards recovery, detailing strategies such as changing her response to body checking rather than trying to stop the behavior outright. Sarah contrasts with Stef by explaining that during her episodes of binge eating and rapid weight gain, she avoided body checking because it was too distressing. She highlights the psychological differences between those who body check for reassurance and those who avoid it to mitigate anxiety. The hosts explore the intersection of body checking with trauma, underlining how people with histories of trauma might find body checking as a safety measure. They also touch upon the impactful role of societal norms and how they can influence habits like weighing oneself. Throughout the episode, the importance of creating a safe environment for oneself is emphasized. The hosts provide practical advice for those struggling with body checking, such as gradually reducing the frequency of checks and changing the emotional response to the act of checking. The episode concludes with a call to reflect deeply on the meaning behind body checking behaviors and the potential for long-term change through developing safety and self-compassion. Find me on TikTok @hangoverwhisperer and IG @thehangoverwhisperer     —Click here to TAKE THE QUIZ: Do you have a drinking problem or a thinking problem? Key Insights & Takeaways: Human Superpower: Imagination & Creation Humans live in a world of mental constructs. Time, money, rules, and even identities are creations of the human mind. Meaning doesn't exist in nature—we assign meaning to events and outcomes, deciding whether they are triumphs or tragedies. Manifestation & Attention Manifestation starts with an idea. What you focus on grows, and what you neglect dies. To manifest something new, you must first believe it's possible and give it your attention. Your brain is a tool that finds or creates evidence for what you believe. If you believe you have a problem, your brain will collect proof of that problem. How You Manifested a “Drinking Problem” It started with the idea that your drinking is a problem, and your brain went to work gathering evidence. Over time, your focus on drinking as a problem created a tangible reality with hangovers, conflicts, and negative emotions. Reframing & Manifesting a New Reality To manifest a healthy relationship with alcohol, start by paying attention to small wins where you are already in control. Examples of wins include: Waking up in the morning and not wanting a drink. Going through your day without drinking. Choosing not to drink and drive. Hangover Homework When experiencing a hangover, walk back through your memories of the previous night and find moments when you had a thought or impulse to stop drinking. Those thoughts, however fleeting, are wins—proof that you're capable of making different choices. Paying attention to these positive moments reinforces the idea that you can have a healthy relationship with alcohol. A Success Story: Rehearsing a Different Ending Colleen shares a personal story of noticing a pattern, mentally rehearsing a better choice, and successfully manifesting a different outcome the next time. By reflecting on past wins, you can prime your brain to respond differently in similar situations. Homework Assignment: Take 5 minutes to list all the times and ways you've demonstrated control over your drinking. Include moments when you weren't drinking, times you limited your intake, and any positive actions related to alcohol. Next time you have a hangover, reflect on the moments when you had the thought to stop or reduce your drinking, even if you didn't act on it. Count those moments as wins. Check out the Mindful Drinking course and listen to the episode titled Hangover Homework for a deeper dive into this exercise. Final Thoughts: Manifesting a healthier relationship with alcohol starts with paying attention to the right thoughts. Focus on what's working, notice the small wins, and train your brain to manifest the solution rather than the problem.

Are you curious to know if plant medicines like psilocybin and pharmaceuticals like naltrexone can reduce your cravings for alcohol?   For women who live and work in mainstream America, the fear of flying to Costa Rica for a psychedelic ceremony ranks right below the fear of telling your doctor how much you really drink.    And so we hide. Because the truth could cost us our career or our kids, force us into expensive rehabs and brand us as alcoholics for the rest of our lives.   Today I'm talking to Amy Devenny, a hairdresser turned activation coach who struggled for years to control her drinking. She's tried staying sober for years at a time, microdosing with psilocybin and most recently, taking naltrexone.   We're having a radically raw conversation about the steps we must take to help ourselves and what it really looks like to overcome alcohol use disorder.   For more information on how to access Naltrexone legally from a board-certified physician through the privacy of an on-line service, listen to It's Not About the Alcohol EP119 Is naltrexone effective in alcohol dependence?   Click here to TAKE THE QUIZ: Do you have a drinking problem or a thinking problem?   You might also enjoy EP25 Plant Medicines Psilocybin and Ayahuasca for Alcohol Use Disorder with Omar Pinto   Find Amy @amydevennyrocks on Instagram   What daily updates from me?
