Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Path to a Happy and Healthy Life
Have you ever looked back on a season of your life and wished it had been different?Maybe you wish you had known then what you know now. Maybe you wish you had made different choices, shown up differently, or been able to protect the people you love from pain. Perhaps there are memories that still carry regret, remorse, sadness, or a lingering sense that things should have gone another way.In this episode, I share a deeply personal experience that arose as I prepared to send family photo albums and keepsakes to my sons. Looking through pictures from years gone by brought forward an unexpected wave of emotion and a question many of us have asked ourselves:Why did it have to be so hard?As I sat with those feelings, I was reminded that healing isn't about pretending the past didn't happen. It's not about bypassing the pain or convincing ourselves that everything was perfect. Healing is about learning how to hold our memories with compassion, tenderness, and grace. When we continue to replay our past through the lens of judgment, regret, and self-blame, we keep old wounds alive. But when we bring awareness, self-compassion, and spiritual understanding to those experiences, something begins to shift. The past remains the same, but our relationship to it can heal.In this episode, we explore how to honor our feelings without becoming trapped in them, how to release old judgments, and how to view our lives through the lens of a soul's journey rather than a story of mistakes and failures.Because the truth is, you cannot change the past. But you can heal the way you carry it.Send a one way text to Rev Rachel
This week, Lola and Meagan are joined by comic, actor, and author of Sure I’ll Join Your Cult, Maria Bamford. The girls discuss Maria’s childhood OCD, intrusive thoughts, and the ways those experiences primed her to seek support, structure, and belonging through a variety of groups later in life. They explore culty (but helpful!) aspects of 12 step programs like Debtors Anonymous and Al-Anon, along with the many other communities she’s loved and joined along the way.Maria also shares her experience with eating disorders, going to treatment in her twenties, and the controversial Suzuki Method through which she learned violin as a child.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

While I usually reserve guest interviews for the Recover Your Soul Bonus Podcast, today's conversation is one I felt called to bring to all of you here on the main show.I'm honored to welcome Michael Mirdad, a Spiritual Teacher, Healer, Mystic, and Best-Selling Author. Michael has spent more than four decades helping people heal, awaken, and deepen their connection to God, blending wisdom from Christianity, Buddhism, A Course in Miracles, and recovery in a way that is both profound and deeply practical. In this conversation, he shares a powerful perspective on addiction, recovery, and healing, reminding us that beneath many of our struggles is a longing to reconnect with our true nature and remember the wholeness that has always existed within us.Together we explore addiction as a spiritual issue rather than a moral failing, the relationship between recovery and awakening, the role of compassion and self-forgiveness, and how spiritual connection can help us heal the sense of separation that so many of us carry.Whether you are in recovery yourself, love someone who struggles with addiction, or are simply walking a path of healing and spiritual growth, I believe you'll find wisdom, hope, and encouragement in this conversation.Michael serves as the Spiritual Leader of the Global Center for Christ Consciousness in Sedona, Arizona, where he offers weekly teachings, workshops, retreats, and healing programs dedicated to spiritual awakening and personal transformation. He is the author of numerous best-selling books and the founder of the Daughters of Heaven Conference, a gathering devoted to healing, empowerment, and conscious living.Michael Mirdad & The Global Center for Christ Consciousness: https://michaelmirdad.com/Daughters of Heaven Conference: https://daughtersofheaven.comThe Heart of A Course in Miracles Workshop:https://courses.michaelmirdad.com/courses/the-heart-of-a-course-in-miracles-2026Weekly Sunday Service live on YouTube 11 am: @MichaelMirdadFacebook: Michael MirdadSend a one way text to Rev Rachel

I thought this was an interesting idea for a meeting: Three Fellowships - First we have Lucy from Alateen followed by Steve from Alanon and then Bud M (sober in 1983) from AA. I dont know a lot about this meeting other than it was recorded sometime in June of 2011, somewhere in the UK. When David found himelf sick and lying on the floor of his garage, he decided to seek treatment for the drinking that had kept him isolated from his family. During his time in rehab a counsellor asked him three questions that changed his life. He knew then that he was an alcoholic and committed himself to recovery. He has not had a drink since. David has found over his years of recovery that attending Al-Anon and ACA meetings has been an important part of his understand of himself and the nature of trauma and addiction. If you think that Al-Anon could help you cope with someone else's problem drinking then you can phone 1300 252 666 or go to their website al-anon.org.auShow your support for the Living Free show and join the celebration of 3CRs's 50th Birthday show by donating to our radiothon here:https://www.givenow.com.au/cr/living-free-2026-radiothon#Alcoholism #Al-Anon #RecoveryIf you would like more information about Alcoholics Anonymous, they can be contacted on 1300 222 222 or go online at aa.org.au The Living Free show may involve discussion of topics such as suicide, mental illness, self-harm and family violence. Carol grew up in a home where church and service to others was paramount. This was a wonderful thing as it prompted her to pursue social work, but it also had its detriments - which Carol didn't recognize for many decades. She didn't know she had a savior complex. Or codependency issues. Or a desire to control people and situations. But then a series of heavy circumstances hit Carol and her family, and she could no longer ignore the truth. One, she had work to do, and two, she needed help. Carol joined Al Anon and Celebrate Recovery, and in finding the support of others in recovery, she began her own journey to hope and true strength. Now it's her mission to share that hope with others.Join Sanghoon and Michelle as they talk with Carol, a social worker, consultant, and advocate for quality family support and training. Working across the non-profit sector and state government, she works to prevent child abuse through family resource centers, home visitation, and child development and parenting programs. Carol is also the co-dependent spouse of a recovering opioid and alcohol addict, a part of her story she honestly shares on this episode. “Is addictive personality real?” This question opens a discussion on the complexities of addiction, including insights on how to recognize an addictive personality. Other topics include strategies for helping a son struggling with nicotine and vaping, the intersection of faith and recovery in programs like Al Anon, and the role of sacraments in overcoming addiction. Join the Catholic Answers Live Club Newsletter Invite our apologists to speak at your parish! Visit Catholicanswersspeakers.com Questions Covered: 06:10 – Is there Such a thing as an addictive personality and how do i know i have one? 13:46 – I think my son struggles with nicotine and vaping, possibly some ADD. I think he is self-medicating. Any suggestions on how to help him? 18:50 – I was part of Al Anon and I feel like it brought me back to my Catholic faith. Ultimately I stopped going because they seemed to shun my Catholicism. Yet, it is interesting that they say they are a God-centered program. 29:16 – I have been in a 12 step program for food addiction for almost 20 years. I have recently had the epiphany that I can continue those meetings, but also go to Catholic in Recovery meetings where I can feel more relaxed about being open about my faith. 35:01 – I think the sacraments were the force that pulled me out of addiction. 41:09 – I sobered up in AA. I found that most people there who were against talking about Catholic faith were people who grew up Catholic but were hurt in some way. I found after a meeting was a great time to do apologetics. 47:59 – My dad is elderly and an alcoholic. Now he is sick. If he stopped his drinking his medication would work better. I don't know how to approach it. Sometimes I feel like I'm giving up on him. 52:38 – I was addicted to pornography and I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing by staying away from it.

Have you ever noticed that even when things are going well, there can still be a part of you looking for what's missing, what's not working, or what needs to change before you can finally feel at peace? In this episode of Recover Your Soul, I share a teaching from Pema Chödrön's book How We Live Is How We Die that has stayed with me for weeks: the propensity for discontent. The phrase struck me because I could see how often many of us move through life carrying an unconscious habit of looking for what's wrong. We think that if we could just fix the relationship, heal the wound, change the circumstance, or get to the next goal, then we would finally be okay. But what if peace isn't waiting on the other side of everything changing? What if the invitation is to become aware of the lens through which we're already seeing our lives? In this conversation, I explore the Buddhist teaching of the kleshas: attachment, resistance, and delusion. These are the habitual ways we become disconnected from our peace and our true nature. As I share in the Recover Your Soul process, these patterns often show up as our unconscious beliefs, stories, fears, judgments, and attempts to control life around us.Together we'll look at how attachment keeps us grasping for things to be different, how resistance keeps us fighting reality, and how delusion can keep us trapped in old stories and misunderstandings that prevent us from seeing ourselves and our lives clearly. This isn't about pretending everything is fine or pushing away difficult feelings. It's about learning to be present with what is, while bringing more awareness, compassion, and curiosity to the patterns that create suffering. The beautiful gift of this work is that the very places where we get stuck can become doorways to wisdom, healing, and awakening. In This Episode:What Pema Chödrön means by "the propensity for discontent"How the habit of looking for what's wrong affects our happinessUnderstanding the three kleshas: attachment, resistance, and delusionThe connection between Buddhist wisdom and the Recover Your Soul processHow our patterns, beliefs, and stories shape our experience of lifeLearning to witness difficult emotions without judging ourselvesWhy awareness is the first step toward healing and transformationHow to find greater peace in the present moment, even when life isn't perfectMy hope is that this episode helps you become a little more aware of the ways you may be searching for what's missing and instead begin noticing what is already here. We are all learning together how to release old patterns, soften our judgments, and reconnect with the wholeness that has always existed within us.As always, thank you for being part of the Recover Your Soul Community. It is an honor to walk this healing and awakening journey with you.Send a one way text to Rev Rachel

Jacquie married a man whose drinking became problematic, but it was her daughter's abuse of alcohol that led her to seek support in Al-Anon. With her daughter's additional struggle with mental illness Jacquie found the dilemmas about how to best help her daughter difficult to navigate. Al-Anon gives her the support she needs in often distressing situations and has helped her to establish boundaries to look after herself while still giving love and support to her daughter. In this episode we discuss some of the traditions of Al-Anon that Jacquie credits with making Al-Anon groups safe places to share her experience with others who understand. If you think that Al-Anon could help you cope with someone else's problem drinking then you can phone 1300 252 666 or go to their website al-anon.org.auShow your support for the Living Free show and join the celebration of 3CRs's 50th Birthday show by donating to our radiothon here:https://www.givenow.com.au/cr/living-free-2026-radiothon #Alcoholism #Al-Anon #RecoveryIf you would like more information about Alcoholics Anonymous, they can be contacted on 1300 222 222 or go online at aa.org.au The Living Free show may involve discussion of topics such as suicide, mental illness, self-harm and family violence. Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Path to a Happy and Healthy Life
For so many of us, saying no can feel almost unbearable. We want everyone to be okay, and somewhere along the way we learned that keeping the peace often meant abandoning ourselves. But there comes a moment on this journey where something inside says… this doesn't feel right anymore. In this episode, we continue the conversation around helping versus enabling and move into the sacred work of boundaries. Not boundaries as punishment or control, but boundaries as clarity, self-respect, and learning how to come home to yourself.Through the Recover Your Soul process, we begin to recognize the patterns and beliefs that taught us we were responsible for everyone else's feelings. We start learning how to trust our own inner knowing, stop overexplaining ourselves, and make choices that align with who we are becoming.Choosing yourself is not selfish. It's sacred, and so is setting healthy boundaries. This work can feel uncomfortable, especially when old relationships and patterns push back. But there is also freedom and peace that comes when you stop abandoning yourself in order to keep everyone else comfortable. You are allowed to have needs. You are allowed to say no.You are allowed to choose yourself with love.Together, we can do the work that will Recover Your Soul.Send a one way text to Rev Rachel

Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Path to a Happy and Healthy Life
Mother's Day can bring up so many emotions. For some, it's a beautiful day filled with love and connection. And for many others, it can be layered with grief, disappointment, longing, resentment, confusion, or the ache of not having received what was needed. In this episode, we explore the healing of mother wounds through the lens of the Recover Your Soul process. Not to stay stuck in blame or victimhood, but to create space to honestly acknowledge what was felt, what was missing, and how those early experiences shaped the patterns, beliefs, and stories we still carry today. So often we dismiss our own feelings by saying, “They did the best they could.” And while that may be true, healing also asks us to allow ourselves to recognize the impact those experiences had on us emotionally, spiritually, and even within our nervous systems. This conversation is also about forgiving ourselves. As mothers, so many of us carry guilt, shame, regret, and the fear that we somehow got it wrong. We wanted to do better. We wanted to love well. And yet we are human beings carrying our own wounds, patterns, and limitations while trying to raise children in a complicated world.Healing begins when we allow ourselves to stop carrying the blame. This is an invitation to witness yourself with compassion, to honor the truth of your experience, and to begin releasing the weight you were never meant to carry forever.Your healing matters.Your forgiveness matters. And the love you learn to offer yourself has the power to change everytSend a one way text to Rev Rachel

It can be such a fine line between helping and enabling, between supporting someone we love and trying to save them. When you're in it, it's hard to see clearly. You feel their pain, and everything in you wants to make it better. In this episode, I share from my own experience and from the Recover Your Soul process about what it really means to love someone without trying to fix them. This isn't about finding the “right” answer, because every relationship and every situation is unique. It's about turning inward and beginning to recognize when we are acting from fear and discomfort, and when we are responding from a more grounded, soulful place. So often, our desire to help comes from not wanting to feel the pain of watching someone struggle. But what if peace doesn't come from changing them? What if it comes from acceptance? As we shift from saving to supporting, we begin to let go of control and trust that each soul is on its own journey. We can still love deeply, still be present, but from a place of clarity, compassion, and healthier boundaries. If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure of how to show up for someone you love, you are not alone. This is the work, and there is another way.Remember, this isn't about fixing yourself. It's about recovering the wholeness that has always been within you.Send a one way text to Rev Rachel
Emily Redondo talks about how she has dealt with years of addiction, how this impacted her self-image as a wife, mother, and person in recovery, and her new book, "Wife, Mother, Drunk."Special Guest: Emily Redondo.
What do you do when you've had a $28 million business exit — and then watch nearly all of it disappear? If you're Diane Prince, you eventually find Al-Anon, do the work, and rebuild a life and business that's more fulfilling than anything you had before. In this episode, Arlina sits down with Diane — entrepreneur, business strategist, and Al-Anon member of 17 years — for one of the most honest conversations about recovery, money, and entrepreneurship we've had on this show. The Exploding Doormat Diane didn't grow up with alcohol in her home. But she grew up with rage — a mother who saved her pleasant face for the outside world and unleashed her anger at home. That environment created what Diane calls the "exploding doormat" cycle: swallowing feelings, avoiding conflict, staying in denial — until everything finally blows. This pattern followed her into her marriage, her business partnerships, and her parenting. It took two specific moments — firing a family member who had been terrorizing her, and yelling at a boyfriend that he was "worse than her ex-husband" — to finally make her ask: what's the common denominator here? The answer was her. And that realization was the beginning of everything. From Atheist to Step 3 Diane resisted Al-Anon for years. She didn't believe in God. She thought the people in the rooms were the ones who were confused. It wasn't until her life felt truly unmanageable that she was willing to try. Working Step 3 at 2am — anxious, exhausted, worrying about college funds and the future — she asked herself: what if I just try this? What followed was a wave of peace she had never felt before. A spiritual experience she still can't fully explain, but one that changed everything. The $20 Moment and What Came After After the exit, after the divorce, after the financial unraveling — Diane found herself raising three kids with sometimes $20 or $50 to her name for an entire week. What she learned in that season: forcing solutions doesn't work. Letting things emerge does. When her Malibu rental situation collapsed, she didn't white-knuckle her way to a solution. She got still, turned it over, and within 24 hours had a lease on Malibu Road she never thought she could afford. Recovery Principles as Business Strategy Today, Diane runs a virtual assistant agency that helps entrepreneurs build scalable businesses. She attributes her success directly to what program has taught her: let go of control, trust the people around you, make amends quickly when you micromanage, and stay open to what wants to emerge. Action Items from This Episode: • Notice where the "exploding doormat" cycle shows up in your own life or business • Ask yourself: where are you forcing a solution right now? What would it feel like to let go? • If you're building a business and feel like you have to do it all yourself, consider: who could you bring in to help you scale? Today's topic: Living With An Alcoholic Is Sure To Make Anyone Neurotic Both the Big Book and Courage to Change (Al-Anon, p.106) point to something that often gets overlooked—the chaos doesn't just affect the person drinking, it affects everyone around them. Living in that kind of environment can leave you constantly reacting, overthinking, trying to manage someone else's behavior, and losing yourself in the process. The Big Book shows how self-centeredness and fear drive the alcoholic—but Al-Anon reminds us that those around them can get pulled into the same cycle of control, worry, and emotional exhaustion. At some point, the focus has to shift. Not on fixing them. Not on managing the situation. But on finding your own balance, your own sanity, and your own way forward. Because no matter what someone else is doing… you don't have to lose yourself in it. That's what we're getting into today. Trudging Together. No one trudges alone.

Free Recover Your Soul Mini Workbook — your soul journey starts here: www.recoveryoursoul.net/whatisrecoveryoursoulThere is a movement happening right now, and if you have found your way to this community, you are already part of it. A movement away from codependency, people pleasing, and betraying yourself to keep everyone else comfortable. So many of us have spent a lifetime in the supporting role and forming ourselves around what our partners want, what our kids need, what our families expect — without ever asking: who am I, and what do I actually want? That question is at the center of the Recover Your Soul process. And it is at the heart of my new memoir Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Journey of Healing from Addiction, Codependency, and People Pleasing — launching April 13th. (Help me to get the book out into the world!! Make this a Best Seller, and then write a review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)We talk about what happens when you begin to disrupt the roles others have come to expect from you, and why the discomfort you feel when you finally choose yourself is not a sign you got it wrong. It is a sign that something real is shifting. This episode is an invitation to get curious. To ask yourself where you are still forming yourself around someone else's approval. And to recognize that choosing yourself — fully, finally — is not selfish. It is the most healinSend a one way text to Rev Rachel

In this episode, I'm sharing some of the most powerful, science-backed strategies you can use to help motivate your teen to change their relationship with substances — without the yelling, punishing, lecturing, or ultimatums that likely haven't been working. Drawing from the highly regarded book Beyond Addiction, I walk you through two of the most effective tools available to parents of teens struggling with drug or alcohol use: motivational interviewing and the CRAFT method (Community Reinforcement and Family Training), which research has shown to be more effective than traditional intervention approaches and Al-Anon. Some of us learned very early that love could be unpredictable. That the sound of a car pulling into the driveway meant something different in our house. That being the last kid picked up from school wasn't just inconvenient—it was a whole education in holding your breath. Cassidy Gard, debut memoirist and former television producer, grew up being that kid: hyperaware, fiercely observant, and already whispering to herself, I'm going to write about this one day. From age seven—when she first understood that her father's illness was reshaping everything around her—Cassidy was quietly building an inner world fortified by prayer, imagination, and an unwavering belief that something bigger was watching over her. She didn't have the language for it yet. But she was already living inside what would one day become her book.Cosmic Goodness: Surrendering the Shadows to Live in the Light spans nearly three decades—from that seven-year-old girl navigating a home filled with chaos and secrets, to a mother of two, finally grounded in the life she once only dared to imagine. The memoir explores the long shadow of growing up with an alcoholic, emotionally abusive father and the particular perfectionism and people-pleasing that survival demands. It moves through a young woman's brave solo relocation to New York City at seventeen, a decade-long career in television production, a solo pandemic road trip to Montana, and the discovery of a word—Cosmic Goodness—to name the force that had been quietly guiding her all along. It is a book about learning to stop masking and start trusting. About choosing a sober partner because you finally understand what safety actually feels like. About writing yourself—slowly, deliberately—into the future you deserve. What makes Cosmic Goodness something you'll want to press into the hands of anyone navigating a life transition is this: Cassidy doesn't arrive at healing by accident. She earns it—through Al-Anon, through therapy, through the radical act of telling her story honestly. This conversation is a reminder that you don't have to come from a peaceful home to build one. That the anxious child waiting by the window can grow into a woman who finally, deeply feels at home in herself. That cosmic goodness—whatever you call it in your own life—is not something that happens to you. It is something you learn, slowly and beautifully, to recognize.
This is a topic Al-Anon meeting on the 4 Phases to Growth featuring four speakers (all men). I couldn't find out a lot about this other than it was a 34th. Annual Conference held in Michigan sometime in 1986. I assume it was an Al-Anon conference since all the other speakers I have from it identify as Al-Anon. Lastly it cleaned up really well and is an easy listen but during the last 2 speakers there is an occasional crackling popping sound I couldn't remove, its not that annoying...fyi. I would love to hear from you! Send me a one way text and share how Recover Your Soul is supporting you or what you would like to hear more about.Something really big is happening. After more than a year of dedication, vulnerability, late nights, self-doubt, and some of the most profound healing I have ever done, my memoir is almost here. Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Journey of Healing from Addiction, Codependency, and People Pleasing releases on April 13th, 2026. And this weekend, I held the paperback copy in my hands for the first time and I was elated and excited to have it come to life and share with the world.I cried. Of course I cried. And then I started reading it that night and every limiting belief, every fear, every old story about not being enough, not being worthy, not deserving to be seen, came rushing right back up to meet me. Which, honestly, felt like the most perfect reminder that this work never really ends. It just gets deeper. And more beautiful. In this episode I'm pulling back the curtain on the journey behind this book — what it took to write it, what it brought up in me, and why I made the choices I made about how to tell this story. Because this memoir is not a tell-all. It is not a detailed account of every painful moment. It is something I believe is far more important than that.It is an invitation. To you. To remember your own wholeness.Because here is what I know with everything I am. TAre you ready to Recover Your Soul? ABOUT THE EPISODE:Tough love. Two words that get thrown around constantly in the addiction world, and yet nobody can quite agree on what they mean. Kick them out. Cut them off. Save yourself. That's the version I heard early on, and I couldn't do it. Not because I was too soft, but because something about it felt fundamentally wrong - especially with a teenager. In this episode, Cathy and I get practical on the topic of this illusive thing called “tough love.” We walk through the nine actual actions we took with our own kids, in order, from the very first steps all the way to the hardest ones (ones we call “strong love”) as a way of demonstrating action, not theories. Just two moms who were figuring it out as we went, without the language, community or support we needed at the time.YOU'LL LEARN:What Dr. Gabor Maté said about tough love that stopped me coldWhy I stopped using the phrase “tough love” and what I call it insteadNine “strong love” actions Cathy and I took with our own kids, and what we wish we had done differentlyThe thing every person in recovery has told me about what finally changed things for themThe two books I recommend to every parent, no matter where you are in thisEPISODE RESOURCES:Heather Hayes on Hopestream episode 111Mary Crocker Cook on Hopestream episode 223Jessica Lahey on Hopestream episode 163Trish Ruggles on Hopestream episode 313Safe Enough To Change course in Hopestream Community's Limited MembershipThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityGet our free, 4-video course, Hope Starts Here, and access to our Limited Membership hereLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. I would love to hear from you! Send me a one way text and share how Recover Your Soul is supporting you or what you would like to hear more about.I want to share something with you before you press play on this one. This is a replay from about three and a half years ago, an episode I recorded after a trip to Sayulita, Mexico, where my husband came clean that he had continued to 'dabble' with drinking, even after the profound changes we had both made in our lives with recovery. Going back to edit it brought all of it up again. The grief. The love. The complexity of it.Because here's the truth — Rich did stop drinking the way he had for most of his adult life, and that was real and significant. But over the years he has continued to dabble, and each time he eventually has come clean about it, it has hurt. And at the very same time, I can see that this is his journey to Recover Your Soul. Addiction is a beast that is not easy to tame, especially when someone hasn't fully admitted they are powerless over it.What this trip opened in me was a deeper clarity that working on myself is the only place I have any real power. Not because I don't care but because turning within and finding my own self-love, my own joy, my own healing is the deepest work there is. And it is not selfish. Not even a little bit.If you are loving someone in their addiction right now, this episode is for you. Together, we can do the work that will Recover Your Soul. Are you ready to Recover Your Soul?
