It's the last episode of Season 1! Man, time flies when you're talking about aliens and murder. In this episode, Melissa explores the legend of Bigfoot - or BigTootsies, as Liz would say. Then Liz takes us down the rabbit hole of sadness and intrigue that is the unsolved murder of JonBenet Ramsey. When we said you should up-cycle, we didn't mean like that! This week Liz is talking about Ed Gein - the notorious killer who got crafty with the skin and body parts of his victims. Gag. Then, fueled by 1.21 gigawatts of power, Melissa spins a yarn about a man named Sergei Ponomalenko; a man who claims to have time-traveled 50 years into the future. Do we believe him? This week we're here to make you think. Melissa and Liz both chose topics that have many layers and much to dissect. First, Melissa talks about the Near Death Experience of Mary Neal, MD., and the many questions and mysteries that surround the topic of life after death. Then, Liz discusses the case of Gilberto Valle - a man who openly fantasized about his cannibalistic desires in online forums, even bringing his wife and baby into the mix. This one raises a lot of questions on where we draw the line when it comes to freedom of speech and freedom of thought. This week we leaned HEAVILY into the "odd" side of things. First, Liz tells us the story of a murder that is possibly linked to a strange cult-like group called the Orgone Warriors who warn their followers about “reptilian” extraterrestrials living secretly as humans. Yikes. Then, Melissa serves up another strange topic: Objectum Sexuality. People who identify as Objectum Sexuals find themselves sexually attracted to inanimate objects like dolls, buildings, and carnival rides. Double yikes. This is a weird one, y'all - are you here for it? Liz is out this week doing hot girl shit (that's what the kids are saying now, right?) - but never fear - Meaghan is here! Our good friend has graced Melissa with her presence so she didn't have to fly solo for Episode 006, which is a doozy. This week, Melissa steps behind the true crime desk to tell the story of Josh Lambert and the two horrific murders he committed back in 2012 in the small town of Oak Harbor, Washington. This story is close to Melissa's heart as it happened in her home town and she actually knew this family back in the day. This is a super crazy story of which the moral is: don't do meth. Has it already been five episodes?? This week we get a little extra...terrestrial as Melissa recounts the story of Terry Lovelace, a man who had an out-of-this-world experience while on a camping trip with his friend Toby. That's right, we're finally talking ALIENS! Melissa's favorite topic! Then Liz recounts the story of Juana Barraza aka "The Old Lady Killer", who was a little bit David Bowie, a little bit Hulk Hogan. You'll see what we mean. Just listen. As of January 1st, Strange(ish) will now be Odds & Ends. I'm bringing on a cohost, Liz, and every other week we'll be bringing you the best strange stories out there, with a little bit of true crime mixed in.Be on the look out for the changes, and be sure to listen to our first episode on January 1st!
Immersive Horror AKA Extreme Haunts. We touched on this topic in episode 5, but I wanted to take a different spin this time and interview someone who has participated in one of these experiences.Juliet Bennett Rylah is a freelance journalist who was brought into the Immersive Horror realm via her work in arts and entertainment reporting. Upon completing a few of these experiences, she was a little surprised to find that she actually really enjoys them, and even finds them...relaxing??To be fair, some of the experiences she tells me about in this Interview do seem pretty cool, and as someone who loves horror and other spooky stuff, I can see why some people can really get into the idea of living out a seemingly real-life horror experience. What do you think? Would you do one of these experiences? Have you done one of these experiences?? If so, tell me about it! As always, you can email me at strange.ish.podcast@gmail.com or follow me on Instagram @strange.ish.podcastIf you'd like to read Juliet's article in LAist about her immersive experience at Hex, you can find it HERE.
What better way to celebrate Thanksgiving Day than with some good old fashioned ghost stories, am I right?!A few weeks ago I made a post on Reddit asking for true ghost stories - and the people of Reddit delivered. These stories are all super spooky! To add to the fun, I asked my friend Meaghan to come on the podcast and read these with me. We also share a couple of our own ghost stories at the end. No doubt, paranormal experiences are super strange, and that's what makes them so amazing. Thanks to all who submitted!I may do more of these episodes In the future, so If you have a ghost story, or any other strange or spooky tale that you'd like me to read on the podcast, let me know! In this episode I'm joined by my fiance', Grey, and our good friend Amanda - and we will be discussing a rare disorder called Body Integrity Identity Disorder, or BIID.People who suffer from BIID have an obsessive desire to amputate a healthy limb or become paraplegic. Having all of their limbs or being able-bodied causes them a great amount of distress. So much distress, in fact, that some are willing to try to remove body parts themselves in order to gain some relief from the severe dysphoria that they feel. This is a deep topic with SO MANY layers - It was super interesting to talk about, and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it!My info resource for this episode was an article written by two psychiatrists that you can find HERE. An estimated 8% of the population experiences Sleep Paralysis, and thank the good Lord I ain't one of them because it sounds TERRIFYING. Running. It's not usually considered strange...unless you're running hundreds of miles, sometimes with your wiener dogs, looking like the lovechild of Marilyn Manson and Rainbow Bright. This week I sat down for a chat with the colorful, tattooed, energetic, superstar Ultra Runner, Catra Corbett. Over the course of Catra's career she has competed in over 300 ultramarathons and is the first American woman to run over 100 miles or more on more than 100 occasions. We talk about lots of things, including how running saved her from a life of addiction, and some of the strange things that come along with running ultra-ridiculously-long distances. Things like sleep deprivation, hallucinating in the woods, how and where to poop during a long run through the desert, why her wiener dogs are her favorite running companions, and so much more.Catra also wrote a book entitled "Reborn on the Run - My Journey From Addiction to Ultramarathons" which is available on her website www.catracorbett.comI should add that Catra is 52 years old. McKamey Manor. As soon as I heard about America's Most Extreme Haunt I wanted to know more. So I went online and did a little research and eventually ended up in contact with the owner and operator himself: Russ McKamey. I asked him to be on the podcast because I just HAD to know the details of what goes on in this place, and I wanted this info straight from the horse's mouth. He obliged and here we are.McKamey Manor is the most famous (or...infamous?) Extreme Haunt there is, with a waiting list of 20,000+ people, all vying for the chance to participate in one of the Haunt's "tours". The Manor's popularity has been a double edged sword though, putting Russ under some major scrutiny and making him the target of several hate groups. They say what Russ does is torture, Russ says it's all smoke and mirrors. Believe what you will, but I want to be sure to mention the fact that all the participants are consenting adults who are well aware of what they are getting themselves into when they decide to enter The Manor. I really enjoyed this conversation with Russ. It seems to me like he keeps safety at the forefront of his mind and is really just a guy who gets a kick out of giving his participants a good scare. They asked for it, after all. So take a listen, form your own opinion and, who knows?
