See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
What's better than one child murderer? Two child murderers! In this episode we talk about children killing children with the appalling crime of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb.
One of the most famous crimes in American history was the murder of 14-year-old Bobby Frank. Two young men, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, wanted to plan the perfect murder. And they didn't. Author Hal Higdon wrote THE book on this case, called Leopold and Loeb: The Crime of the Century. Is there such a thing as a "perfect crime"? 100 years ago, two teenagers wanted to find out for themselves. 19-year-old Nathan Leopold and 18-year-old Richard Loeb abducted and murdered 14-year-old Bobby Franks within his affluent Chicago neighborhood. The crime of the century became the trial of the century, and the country watched a jury decide the fate of the two murderous teenagers. Author, historian, and Professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Simon Baatz looks back at the historic murders, and the unprecedented trial that followed, as detailed in his book, For The Thrill Of It. Chicagoans gathered around their radio sets on 10th September, 1924 - to hear Judge John R. Caverly sentence wealthy teenagers and lovers Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb to life in prison for the brutal murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks. The couple showed no remorse, exhibited a complete lack of empathy, and said they had committed their crime "because we damn well wanted to", but were nonetheless spared the death penalty following the passionate defense submitted by their attorney, the celebrated campaigner Clarence Darrow. In this edition, The Retrospectors explore how classism intersected with blood-lust when it came to the public perception of the pair's propsective punishment; explore how Nietzsche's concept of the Superman influenced their acts; and explain why their ill-conceived plan to extort ransom money failed so spectacularly… Content Warning: Descriptions of Violence/Murder. Can two brilliant minds outsmart the law? In 1924 Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, two wealthy University of Chicago students, sought to commit the perfect crime simply for the thrill of it. They meticulously planned the kidnapping and murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks, a distant relative of Loeb. Despite their careful plotting, a pair of eyeglasses left at the crime scene linked them to the murder. Their trial captivated the nation, especially with the famous defense attorney Clarence Darrow arguing against the death penalty. The chilling lack of remorse and intellectual arrogance displayed by Leopold and Loeb turned this case into one of the most notorious in American history! Two of my passions are True Crime and the stage. In this segment of Murder Most Foul, I have been able to combine them into one podcast. Lizzie Borden can boast numerous plays, an Opera and a Ballet choreographed by the legendary Agnes DeMille inspired by her crimes. My guest today, Stephen Dolginoff, turned the story of thrill-killers Leopold and Loeb into theatrical musical, entitled appropriately “Thrill Me,” which is still thrilling audiences today. He also recently wrote a fascinating book on the 30-year odyssey of taking his vision from first draft to the stage and beyond. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The musical interludes throughout the podcast are from the Original Cast Recording starring Stephen Dolginoff as Leopold and Doug Kreeger as Loeb.
The past hundred years have seen more than one high-profile prosecution branded as the “crime of the century.” The shocking 1924 crime that was among the first to carry the title turned out to be a harbinger of how public mania around criminal cases could influence the legal system, and how psychiatry would be used and abused by prosecutors and defense attorneys alike as the 20th century wore on and gave way to the 21st.Smithsonian editor Meilan Solly introduces us to teens Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb and their botched, but still deadly, effort to perpetrate “the perfect crime.” What happened next was also surprising: After confessing to the abduction and murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks, they were spared capital punishment thanks to their famed attorney Clarence Darrow. True-crime historian Kate Winkler Dawson then tells us how public interest in Leopold and Loeb's fate helped solidify true crime as a durable subject of fascination. She also tells us about the tools used by the prosecution that were in their infancy during the famed case.Read Meilan Solly's Smithsonian story about Leopold and Loeb here.Learn more about Kate Winkler Dawson, her books, her podcasts, and her work at her site.Find prior episodes of our show here. There's More to That is a production of Smithsonian magazine and PRX Productions. From the magazine, our team is Chris Klimek, Debra Rosenberg and Brian Wolly. From PRX, our team is Jessica Miller, Adriana Rosas Rivera, Genevieve Sponsler, Rye Dorsey, and Edwin Ochoa. In the latest installment in our series What's That Building, architecture sleuth Dennis Rodkin shares the story of the Robert Franks Memorial building in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood. Robert “Bobby” Franks was 14 years old back in 1924 when fellow teens Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb killed him and left his body outside of Chicago. The premeditated murder became known as the “crime of the century.” Afterward, Franks' father put money toward a boys' club that he thought would have made his son proud. Amazingly, the building still serves boys today with a variety of enrichment programs. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.
Two privileged young men cold-bloodedly kill someone close to them, just to prove they can get away with the perfect murder. This is the premise behind Alfred Hitchcock's 1948 suspenseful film “Rope.” Sadly, it was also the motivation behind the tragic 1924 murder of Bobby Franks by Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, two college students, in a case so sensational it was referred to as “the crime of the century.” With Clarence Darrow defending the accused murderers, it was also deemed “the trial of the century.” In this fascinating episode we delve into the true crime behind Hitchcock's classic movie “Rope.” Not only do we share interesting behind-the-scenes stories about the film and Hitchcock's groundbreaking use of “long-takes,” we also walk through the infamous Leopold and Loeb case, analyzing how it inspired elements of the film. On the afternoon of March 21st, 1924 a horrific crime shook the city of Chicago (and the entire country). Bobbie Franks, on his way home from school, was kidnapped and murdered by two teenage boy geniuses named Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb. It has long been believed that Loeb was the mastermind behind the plan, while Leopold, in love with him, followed his orders. But my guests believe otherwise.Greg King and Penny Wilson, authors of "Nothing but the Night: Leopold & Loeb and the Truth Behind the Murder That Rocked 1920s America" reveal some of the fascinating information they uncovered while researching this case, including details of other murders Leopold and Loeb might have committed before they killed Bobby.Their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/kingandwilsonFollow them on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AtlantisMagazinMore about the book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Nothing-but-Night-Leopold-America/dp/1250272661
What is the the Perfect Murder? It's what two affluent and academically brilliant young Chicagoans, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, wanted to pull off in 1924 when the murdered fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks. WHY did they want to kill anyone? In part, to prove to themselves that were Übermensches after misunderstanding the philosophical nihilism of Nietzsche. They had come to think that they were truly advanced humans. People above the law. And that normal morality didn't apply to him. They couldn't be held liable by the laws of lesser men around them. Except they could! And they would be. They would be caught quickly because while they were extremely academically talented, criminally, they were morons. And then these two morons would have everyone in Chicago and around the nation talking about what they'd done in another so-called "trial of the century." Give to help Chris make Truce! Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were wealthy young men in the early 1920s. They lived in big homes in Chicago and had world-class educations. They were both pushed hard academically, and Richard was sexually abused as a child. Both graduated early from high school and college. The two were an odd pairing. Nathan was quiet and awkward, not particularly handsome. Richard was gregarious and outgoing, good-looking... and a psychopath. Nathan loved Richard, and the two sometimes had sex with each other. Richard realized he could control Nathan by trading intimacy for criminal activity. They started with typical juvenile delinquent behavior. Soon, though, Richard wanted more. He considered himself a master criminal, someone too smart to get caught. He and Nathan were exposed to the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche wrote that the ultimate purpose of humanity was to evolve into what he called the ubermensch or superman. Leopold and Loeb thought they were that evolved human. Therefore, they should be able to plot and execute the murder of a young boy without ever getting caught. Only, they were so bad at it that it took very little time to pin it on them. Only the brilliance of Clarence Darrow, the country's most prominent defense attorney, could save their lives. In this episode, we're joined by Candace Fleming. She's the author of the book Murder Among Friends about the crime. The version of Also Sprach Zarathustra used in this episode is courtesy of the Creative Commons License and was produced by Kevin MacLeod. Do you think Nietzsche was right to worry about what would happen after Christianity took a back seat to world events? What should have been our response? With this little bit we covered about Nietzsche today, what do you think of his work? Can you see why it makes Chris nervous just to mention it in an episode? Do you see the connection between evolution and superman? Were people like Darrow and Bryan right to be concerned about young people learning Nietzsche's philosophy? Learn more about your ad choices. This week's episode dives into the shared psychosis of two. We will talk about Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb and Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme. Don't be too quick to judge....we're all mad here!
Nearly a hundred years ago, two wealthy and privileged teenagers―Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb―were charged and convicted in a gruesome crime that would lead to the original “Trial of the Century”. Even in Jazz Age Chicago, the murder was uniquely shocking for the motive of the killers: well-to-do Jewish scions, full of promise, had killed fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks for the thrill of it. The trial was made even more sensational by the revelation of a love affair between the defendants and by defense attorney Clarence Darrow, who delivered one of the most famous defense summations of all time to save the boys from the death penalty. The story of their mad folie à deux, with Loeb portrayed as the psychopathic mastermind and Leopold as his infatuated disciple, has been endlessly repeated and accepted by history as fact. And none of it is true.Using twenty-first century investigative tools, forensics, and a modern understanding of the psychology of these infamous killers, Nothing but the Night turns history on its head. While Loeb has long been viewed as the architect behind the murders, King and Wilson's new research points to Leopold as the dominant partner in the deadly relationship, uncovering a dark obsession with violence and sex. Nothing but the Night pulls readers into the troubled world of Leopold and Loeb, revealing a more horrifying tale of passion, obsession, and betrayal than history ever imagined. NOTHING BUT THE NIGHT: Leopold & Loeb and the Truth Behind the Murder That Rocked 1920's America-Greg King and Penny Wilson.
In 1924, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, two college students born to wealthy Chicago families, brutally murdered Bobby Franks, a 14-year-old boy. Nearly 100 years later, their famous case, known as one of the first 'thrill killings' of the modern era, captivates our societal imagination. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkirGLsstSk&ab_channel=LeighBienen (Clarence Darrow Interview (Source unknown)) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrjbL4eedkQ&ab_channel=jmd26 (Orson Welles as Clarence Darrow in Compulsion) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4bf_D0CQms&ab_channel=CIN%C3%89MOI (Compulsion Film (1959)) https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2018/07/26/reopening-the-case-files-of-leopold-and-loeb/ (The Paris Review - Reopening the Case Files of Leopold and Loeb) https://images.chicagohistory.org/asset/7270/ (Chicago History Museum Images - Eyeglasses owned by Nathan Leopold) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efkRX4VXgBI&ab_channel=USNationalArchives (Nina Barrett: The Leopold and Loeb Files: An Intimate Look at One of America's Most Infamous Crimes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWsuOh-S1II&ab_channel=ChristopherLeidenfrost (Thrill Me: NJ Production Clip) https://news.wttw.com/2018/11/26/mystery-nathan-leopold-s-bird-collection (WTTW: Nathan Leopold's Bird Collection) https://homicide.northwestern.edu/crimes/leopold/ (Northwestern University Archives | 1924: Leopold and Loeb | Homicide in Chicago 1870-1930) Follow us on IG: @themorbidmuseum Email us at themorbidmuseum@gmail.com Artwork: Brittany Schall Music: "Danse Macabre" by Camille Saint-Saens, performed by Kevin MacLeod 2022 All Rights Reserved

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we turn to some True Crime and discuss the case of Leopold and Loeb. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb killed 14-year-old Bobby Frank on May 21, 1924. Why? Well, that one gets complicated. Both Leopold and Loeb were prodigies, child geniuses. They had each graduated from Ivy League colleges by age 17 or 18. Leopold thought that he was a Nietzschean superman and that typical laws and morality were below him. Loeb, apparently, was just down for whatever and loved the thrill of a crime. So they planned a perfect crime just to prove they could get away with it. Which they didn't. So, how did they get caught? What was the plan? What happened to Frank's body, and what evidence was found? Which one of them was shanked by a straight razor in prison? Listen, laugh, learn.
