Send us a Text Message.Embarking on a marathon journey isn't just about the miles—it's about the metamorphosis within. Catra Corbett, affectionately known as the Dirt Diva, joins us to recount her astonishing pivot from a haze of post-sobriety uncertainty to the clarity and vitality found on ultramarathon trails. Her tale isn't just about endurance, but about the sheer tenacity of the human spirit and the profound connections formed when we push our limits. From the pavement of the San Francisco Marathon to the ruggedness of 200-mile races, Catra's experiences weave a story of personal triumph and the ripple effect of a single choice. We lace up our trail shoes and navigate the mental switchbacks of ultramarathon running, capturing the essence of determination that powers Catra through sleep-deprived hallucinations and the physical hurdles of extreme distances. The landscape of long-distance running emerges as a unique community, one where nicknames like "Dirt Diva" are earned and the support of fellow runners fosters an environment where extraordinary goals become attainable. It's about the grit under your nails, the caffeine-fueled respite from fatigue, and the wisdom gleaned from every punishing mile.Yet, our conversation takes a turn from the physical to the emotional, as we discuss how running intertwines with the most tender threads of life. Catra shares how the loss of her loyal dachshund, Truman, was both a heartbreak and a catalyst for healing. It's an exploration of how grief finds solace in the rhythmic beat of footsteps on the trail and how the joy of running can be a guiding star through the darkest nights of the soul. As we close, we glimpse into the future with Catra's new canine companion, Forrester, and the continued journey toward races on the horizon, reminding us all that the run isn't over—it's just beginning to reveal its deeper gifts. Before Catra Corbett aka Dirt Diva was an ultrarunner, she was a drug addict.  The drugs led her to dropping out of school , developing an eating disorder, damaging relationships and eventually in jail.  Catra hit her rock bottom and decided she was going to turn her life around.  In 1996, two years after being clean and sober, she started lifting weights and walking.  One day she just started running and never stopped.  Catra has completed more than one-hundred 100-mile races, the Moab 240 multiple times, Bigfoot 200 and Badwater 135 and holds the fastest known time for the 425-mile-long John Muir Trail.  Through Catra's desire to help people by sharing her story she wrote a detailed bestselling book about her life, struggles and triumphs called Reborn on the Run; My Journey from Addiction to Ultramarathons.   Authentic!  That is the best word to describe Catra.  We could have talked to Catra for hours, she has a lot of life experience and wisdom to share.  On this episode Catra talks about her many running adventures and most recent experience at the Bigfoot 200.  The ultra-running world is lucky to have such a selfless runner out there.  This is a woman who really cares about the community and lifting people up.  We also discuss Catra's book and being vulnerable.  Of course, we had to talk about the one and only Truman.  Catra is someone that has a lot to offer and is finding new ways to help people who struggle with addiction.  We are big supporters and can't wait to see what she does.  I hope you enjoy this talk as much as we did. https://catracorbett.com/ IG: @dirtdiva333

Kevin is Fireman in Yonkers, NY, 5 x Ironman, 50 miler finisher, plant-based athlete and cook. Here's a intro to Kevin in his own words: "For most of my life I ate the standard American diet. This typical days, weeks and years full of meat, cow’s milk, eggs, cheese, sugary cereals, too much pizza (like 3 days a week too much) and processed junk food. I live this way for 33 years. It wasn’t until 2015, when I learned what plant-based meant and decided to give it a try. I switched over to a lifestyle and a daily routine that is rich in fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains. These are the sources of energy that the earth has provided. Everything I eat started as a seed. I've lost a total of 40 lbs. and my workouts are more effective because of an increase in energy and stamina. I also sleep more soundly because my body is not loaded with toxins and doesn’t have to expend energy tossing and turning throughout the night trying to figure out how to process those old harmful toxins, when all it wants to do is rest. I noticed that I recover quicker from workouts, therefore I can train more often. This resulted in me racing faster and improving my performance in all sports and activities. The benefits to this lifestyle change seem endless. I am constantly learning and trying to better the person from yesterday. Life is more enjoyable when you feel better. We weren’t put on this earth to get fat, sick, achy and slow, so don’t settle for that." In the second part of the episode I speak with Sarah Lorge Butler from Runner's World (54:40 mark). For Mariana Maldonado, 2020 was a year of amazing improvements in fitness with no races to test them. Several of her marathons were postponed and cancelled throughout the yeas as she continually altered her training and remained optimistic. It was a learning experience that she is hoping to capitalize on in 2021. As Mari continued to improve, she started to reach whole new levels of speed and fitness. As exciting as this was, it became hard for her to embrace those new levels. In this episode we dive into matching her confidence with her fitness, juggling an ever-changing schedule, and how she is planning on taking the next step in 2021. So many runners are passionate about their running while also working hard to advocate for a cause/mission they believe in. When we combine these two passions to help raise awareness and philanthropic support it can be a remarkable experience. It can also change how we connect to our running. No one knows this better than Jordan Marie Daniel. Episode 84 is an interview with Catra Corbett. Before she was an ultrarunner, she was a drug addict, a hair stylist. a go-go dancer, a daughter, and a friend to many. The drugs led her to drop out of high school, develop an eating disorder, and damage her relationship with her family. Catra eventually found herself in jail. That was the start of her turn-around. In 1996, two years after being clean and sober, Catra started to dig myself out of a pretty dark hole — starting exercising by lifting weights and walking. She never liked running when she was a kid, but her dad (who died unexpectedly when Catra was seventeen) had planted a seed in her head about how long distance runners can work through all kinds of pain and accomplish truly remarkable things. One day she just started running. Decades later, Catra is one of the few humans who has completed more than one hundred 100-mile races. She runs every single day, and it has completely transformed her life. Are injuries or ongoing niggles causing running to be painful ruining your enjoyment of your sport and hobby? Running. It's not usually considered strange...unless you're running hundreds of miles, sometimes with your wiener dogs, looking like the lovechild of Marilyn Manson and Rainbow Bright. This week I sat down for a chat with the colorful, tattooed, energetic, superstar Ultra Runner, Catra Corbett. Over the course of Catra's career she has competed in over 300 ultramarathons and is the first American woman to run over 100 miles or more on more than 100 occasions. We talk about lots of things, including how running saved her from a life of addiction, and some of the strange things that come along with running ultra-ridiculously-long distances. Things like sleep deprivation, hallucinating in the woods, how and where to poop during a long run through the desert, why her wiener dogs are her favorite running companions, and so much more.Catra also wrote a book entitled "Reborn on the Run - My Journey From Addiction to Ultramarathons" which is available on her website www.catracorbett.comI should add that Catra is 52 years old. He wasn’t a runner, I’d just met him days earlier but now he was standing right next to me ready to pace me the final 8 miles to the finish of this 100 mile race in the jungle and I knew I wanted him there but I was worried. I glanced at my legs, covered in mud and sweat and sticky with dreams that slowly seeped from my head where they had been born 6 years earlier settling slowly somewhere in the mud with my ego. I’d be getting my finish but not in the time or place I hoped for."

“Getting out is the first step.”Catra CorbettIf Ross Edgley is a real-life Aquaman, I nominate ultrarunner extraordinaire Catra Corbett as a real-life Wonder Woman.Definitely one of the planet's most colorful athletes, Catra's polychromatic goth-punk aesthetic is a perfect superhero costume match for her sparkling personality. Rocking wild rainbow hair, brightly colored running costumes and tattooed head-to-toe, you can spot the Dirt Diva's smile from a mile out, happily tearing up the trails with her trusty side-kick training partner TruMan — a goggle-adorned mini dachshund. TruMan's superpower? He loves running as much as she does.Yes, it's all a bit nutty. But don't be deceived — Catra is an absolute beast of an athlete. Over the course of her storied career she has competed in over 250 ultramarathons and is the first American woman to run over 100 miles or more on more than 100 occasions (137 to date). You might recall Catra from the book Born to Run as the “kaleidoscopically tattooed” woman who ran the 212-mile John Muir Trail from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney. When she reached the end, she didn't stop. Instead, she turned around and ran back — a 425-mile effort for which she holds the fastest known time (FKT), completing it in just over twelve days. Not enough? Catra also holds the FKT for the Muir Ramble – clocking 324 miles in just 7 days. Oh yeah, she also ran 144 trail miles around Lake Tahoe in 43 hours on just 50 minutes of sleep. Most recently, at age 53, Catra completed three back-to-back 200-mile races to become the oldest woman to win the triple crown of 200's (Bigfoot 200, Tahoe 200 & Moab 240). It's an astounding feat she completed in just 10 weeks. A mere eleven days later she celebrated her accomplishment by running another 100 miles at the Javelina Jundred — dressed as the The Mad Hatter. Vintage Dirt Diva.To top it off, she's a vegan — a lifestyle she adopted 15 years ago to which she attributes her high performance prowess, race consistency and longevity.Catra's resume speaks for itself. But most impressive are the obstacles she has faced and overcome to become the shining example of humanity and athleticism she is today.Twenty-four years ago, Catra was lost in a hopeless spiral of meth addiction, disordered eating, and sexual and emotional abuse. Ultimately busted for peddling crystal, she hits rock bottom in a jail cell that scares her straight. Upon release she commits to getting sober, moves back home with her mother, abandons her lower companions, her boyfriend, and the dark lifestyle that she came to depend on. Her only clean friend pushes her to train for a 10K with him, and surprisingly, she likes it – and decides to run her first marathon after that.Sobriety saved her life. Running gave her a new one altogether. Along the way she attempts suicide, loses loved ones, falls in love, has her heartbroken, meets lifelong friends and finally faces the past that led to her addiction — all of which is beautifully chronicled in her memoir, Reborn on the Run: My Journey from Addiction to Ultramarathons*.I sat down with Catra to learn the how and why behind her incredible journey from meth-addicted cosmetologist to world class, vegan ultrarunning phenom. We cover her goth netherworld days and how she transformed her life in recovery. This week I'm super pumped to chat with Catra Corbett, one of the most accomplished ultrarunners I've had the pleasure of sharing a few miles with. Catra is a wonderful human being and an amazing athlete. When you meet her you instantly know that she absolutely loves running and expresses her joy for the sport by taking on gigantic challenges. Just to give you an idea here's some of her summer schedule- Beyond the Limits 72 hour run, Desert RATS stage race, FKT on the 310 mile John Muir Ramble Route, and then the Triple Crown of 200s (where you run all three of Candice's 200 mile races)!! And that doesn't include crewing for Badwater, the a handful of other races she's signed up for, and her current running streak! In this episode Catra shares stories from her early running career before we get into her recent FKT (Fastest Known Time) on the John Muir Ramble Route- 310 miles from San Francisco to Yosemite National Park. It sounds like it was a really challenging adventure that led her and her crew through all the peaks and valleys that come from ultrarunning challenges. We also talk about the impact she has on others by sharing her story and expressing her love of running. Catra recently wrote a book called "Reborn on the Run: My Journey from Addict to Ultramarathons" which is an excellent read that will show you that anything is possible when you discover your passions. I really respect her for using her powerful story to EMPOWER OTHERS. I shared the link below so you can check it out! Hope you enjoy the episode! We'll be back at you next week!! Buddy the elderly wonder dog is hanging in there.  He goes the first 2 miles of all my trail runs with me.  He got 5 runs in last week.  Then he sleeps.  I sometimes have to carry him up the stairs when his back hips don't work.  And I don't expect him to jump up into my truck anymore.  It's ok.  He's done his part.  Now it's my turn.  I've been training consistently.  Typically 6 miles Tuesday, 10 Wednesday and 6 Thursday then back-to-back longs on the weekends.  It's not a bad cadence.  The trails are drying out.  The mosquitoes are out but those only get me if I stop too long.  As we get into the summer the deer flies will show up and I'll have to get some of those sticky patches.  They are real pests. I booked my hotel for the ultra.  And I got some wonderful news today.  Dirtdawg and JustFinish aka Mike Croy and Kevin Green are going to crew and pace for me.  Both those guys have run this course.  This is a big bonus.  … I got a haircut this weekend, actually on Memorial Day.  The place I usually go was closed for the holiday.  I went to a lower end clip joint chain that was open.  I was a bit afraid with the guy I got.  I haven't had high quality experiences with this chain.  But I had a business trip and needed to get it cleaned up.  The kid was wearing a wrinkled white tee-shirt, looked rather slept-in, with a sleeveless black denim vest covered in studs.  Quite disheveled.  He had goth tattoos all over him and piercings.  Showing my age and upbringing I wondered if putting my grey head in his hands was a smart thing to do. I had just finished reading Catra Corbett's new book about how she was a goth meth addict before she got in to ultra-running.  But, looking at this kid I figured he was a bit overweight to be an addict.  Besides, it's not hard to cut my hair, what's left of it that is.  You can't really screw it up.  He did a very precise job.  Worked me over like I was some important bonsai topiary.  Even worked on my crazy old-man eyebrows.  I really need to work on my assumptions and stop profiling people.  We all turn into our parents at some point, don't we? On with the show! … I'll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported.  What does that mean? And Tim powered through to a 3:16.    Now officially the slow guy again! Watched an great documentary on Netflix called Chuck Norris vs Communism about the impact of bootleg videos on Romanians in the 80's.  It's been out for a while but I hadn't seen it yet.  Really well done.  You'll like it.  Especially if you lived through that era.  I have a big weekend coming up.  If I can pull it off I'm going to run 35 on Saturday and another 20 on Sunday.  Yikes!  I had a good week – got all my runs in.  I had a business trip to Salt Lake and I used that to practice more of this miserable, exhausted running that I'm supposed to be practicing.  Ran 6 miles Tuesday morning.  Flew out late to Salt Lake.  Got about 5 hours sleep. Got up and went exploring Wednesday morning. I was originally aiming for the mountains but I ran by a canal, maybe a river, with a wide path so I turned onto that for the bulk of my run.  I ended up getting around 9 miles in, partly because I was running short on time and partly because I ran into a fence.  The canal trail literally ran into a chain link fence.  I think it was because there was a school nearby and they were trying to keep the kids out.  There was a kid size hole at the bottom.  You know how they bend up the corner of the chain link to get under?  But, I made the decision that I wasn't going to wriggle under a fence in the suburbs of West Jordan to get that last mile in.  It was a nice run.  The trail was wide and crushed rock and flat.  It ran behind people's houses.  A whole line of ¼ acre lots.  It's always interesting to look into people's backyards in a voyeuristic way.  Some people had gardens, some had chickens and some had angry dogs.  The river or canal itself was what I would call grey water.  I don't know if that is just the color of the water in Salt Lake or if it is some sort of legacy drainage system.  It didn't smell bad, but it didn't make me want to go for a swim either.  Since it's spring the canal was full of wild ducks and their little gangs of ducklings.  I was subjective to maximum duckling cuteness the whole time as they scurried and paddled away from this strange lumbering thing on the trail in the slanting morning sun.  I even passed a couple ‘joggers' out there.  On my way back, when I left the trail I had to navigate the now bustling streets of suburbia.  At one point I was coming up to an intersection and saw a crossing guard.  These are the community volunteers who are posted at busy intersections near schools with a reflective vest, a held held stop placard and a righteous attitude.    As I was lumbering up the sidewalk towards the intersection I caught the vigilant woman's eyes and gave her the conspiratorial nod.  She moved out and stopped traffic for me!  I tipped my hat and said “You're the best!” The world is a good place filled with good people.   I'll see you out there!   MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks -

Catra’s Wild Idea: To spend maximum time outdoors trail running while breaking ultramarathon records and helping people and dogs along the way.   After battling drug addiction, Catra Corbett hit her bottom, finding herself in jail. Soon after she got sober, Catra discovered her love of fitness. She also started running, and running more. To date, Catra, aka “the Dirt Diva” has run over 260 marathons, over 137 100-mile runs, and set numerous records including becoming the first to run the 424-mile round trip of the John Muir trail in just over 12 days. While she is known in the ultra-running community for her brightly-colored hair, loud running outfits and, numerous piercings and tattoos, most know her now for her tenacious spirit and giant heart.   A lover of animals, the vegan runner has adopted numerous dogs including a dachshund named Truman who she’s trained to run and who now has a following larger than most Instagram stars himself.  Catra recently penned a book, Reborn On The Run, where she shares her story in its most raw form. We talk about her book, being an unlikely runner, her love of dogs, and why and how she decided to share her most intimate truths.
