And today I have a really a former Kansas City boy, a Kansas City native who has done several books on the mob, particularly the Kansas City mob. And he’s got a most recent one that I find just really fascinating. It’s a little known story that will help shed the light on Jimmy Hoffa, a little bit more light than most of you ever knew. There’s some questions that I had myself that’s not really in the in the popular culture about Jimmy Hoffa. It’s Frank Hayde. Welcome, Frank. Thanks, Gary. Great to be with you again. All right, Frank. We’ve done Mafia Dreams and Mafia and the Machine. So tell the guys a little bit about yourself and your books. [1:13] I grew up in Kansas City. My family stretches way back in Kansas City, and they were involved in the political machine under Pendergast, and so I heard a lot of stories about those days growing up. Later in my career with the National Park Service, I worked a short stint at the Harry Truman National Historic Site, where I learned more about local history, more about the political machine and the mob in Kansas City. So that’s where my interest started. [1:39] And then many years later, I wrote The Mafia and the Machine, and then followed that up with some of these other books, including this most recent one, Hoffa’s Connection, the story of Sylvia Pagano, the Kansas City girl at the center of the Mafia’s alliance with the Teamsters. You know, that’s the mouthful, I know. You know how it is with the subtitle. You can try to get the, summarize the entire book in your subtitle. So, that’s what that is. Yeah. When you look up a book or you see it online or whatever, you want to know quickly what it’s about. So I see that title, Hoffa. Oh, that’s interesting. I thought everything was done about Hoffa. Then you got this subtitle in here and you say, oh, that’s interesting. I didn’t know about this. And I didn’t myself, this Sylvia Pagano. And the story starts in Kansas City. It’s a fascinating story, guys. I want to tell you, it is a fascinating story. [2:31] But before we get started, Frank was a park ranger, a law enforcement park ranger for the National Park Service for 20 years. And he has a really interesting mob interaction when he was in, I believe you run a temporary assignment out in California. Tell the guys about your mafia interaction as a law enforcement officer. [2:53] Yeah. So I was actually at the park service 32 years. 20 of those were law enforcement and just retired. But in the summer of 2024, I got to go out to Redwood National Park on what we call a detail, which is a temporary assignment. They were shorthanded and needed a little extra help. And I knew the place pretty well because I had worked there earlier in my career. So I went out there and it’s a beautiful place. And I was on patrol and I came upon a campsite and there was some violations going on. Nothing major, just the typical stuff that we see as park rangers. And I contacted the occupants of this campsite and I got their licenses and I was back in my vehicle running the licenses. There was a male and a female and the female, I noticed it was a New York license and Brooklyn address and last name is Scarpa. I said, no, that can’t be. That’d be too much of a coincidence. And ran the information, recontacted the subject. And I asked the female, I said, by any chance, are you related to Greg Scarpa? She said, oh, yeah, that was my grandfather. And Greg Jr. was my father. [4:02] And I guess I had to laugh. And by then, I had already written a ticket or two, I think, for just petty offenses. And so I handed her ticket and then asked her if she’d take a picture with me. But she was real nice. She understood that people don’t mind, and she was great. She took a picture with me, and she was more than happy to talk about her father and her grandfather. And it was all very interesting and just quite the coincidence. Yeah, really. That was quite a coincidence. Not only the main coincidence was that you knew her. And then a lot of people might know the name. You really knew the name. Yeah, no. And you had this whole interest in it to talk about. Yeah, I can tell you that 99% of park rangers, you have no idea. Now, if you’re a Brooklyn cop, that’s different. But I was probably the only park ranger alive that would have made that connection because of my interest in the topic. I’ve been trying to get Greg Scarlett Jr. to come on. He’s made some intimations to somebody else. He followed my Facebook group, and I followed his. And so I don’t know. I reached out indirectly. I don’t know exactly how to get a hold of him. Maybe I’ll package this little story up and I’ll send that to him. Maybe that’ll get him to come on the show. Except you wrote the tickets, damn it. That’s the problem. I hope he won’t come after me to write in his daughter’s tickets. Yeah. [5:25] All right, Frank. So let’s go in this most recent book, Hoffa’s Connection. How did you, Sylvia Pagano, how did you even get onto that name other than, did you start, she’s Chucky O’Brien’s mother, who most guys know if you’re really into Hoffa at all, or even on the little bit, Chucky O’Brien was, everybody thought he was like his illegitimate son a lot of times or his surrogate son. And he was really close to Hoffa and drove him around. I was going through your book. He was a guy that Hoffa could send around to other mob people because he was half Italian himself and both sides trusted him to carry messages and do meetings and things like that. So how did you get onto this originally? So I got a call from Jack Goldsmith, who’s a very interesting man because he is the learned hand professor of law at Harvard University, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, former assistant attorney general under President Bush. But for me, the most interesting thing about him was that he is Chucky O’Brien’s stepson. [6:29] And he was working on his book, Inhofe’s Shadow, when he contacted me. It’s a great book. I would recommend it to all the wiretappers. But it’s about Chucky. And he wanted to know if I had come across any information on Chucky O’Brien in my research for the Mafia and the Machine, because Chucky was from Kansas City. I said, what? Chucky O’Brien was from Kansas City? Because I knew all about Chucky O’Brien, but I had no idea he was from Kansas City. So that shocked me. And I don’t think very few people knew that. His Kansas City roots were scarcely known. Everybody just thought of Chucky as a Detroit guy. But when I finally read Goldsmith’s book, it’s about Chucky, but he touches on Sylvia. And I found what he wrote about Sylvia to be completely fascinating, especially because she was Kansas City. And so I thought, shoot, she’s in my wheelhouse. I thought, wow, she would make a great subject for a book. But I balked at it because she was so secretive that she left hardly anything information, hardly any documents exist about Sylvia. It’s just she wasn’t like the men that she associated with who were so extensively documented. There was just very little known about her, not even very many photographs in existence. [7:44] But fortunately, I got together with Pat Faisal in Kansas City. He’s a terrific researcher. You’ve worked with him a lot, Gary. You’ve had him on your show, I think. I think he’s written a couple of really important books on local history, and he had come across her independently of me, and through his own research, he had stumbled on just a brief mention or two of Sylvia Pagano in various FBI documents. [8:09] And so we decided to put our heads together, and Pat helped me with the research, did the lion’s share of the research, fed it to me, and then I would write the story. And that’s how it came together. [8:21] Interesting. And Frank, one of the coolest things, the research that Pat found was those wiretaps or bugs that the illegal bugs the FBI had in her house. And so they got a lot of really great conversations and they’re all transcribed and out there for somebody to find. So to me, that was fascinating. [8:45] Yes, that was probably our best source are these transcripts from the illegal microphones that the FBI placed in homes and businesses of organized crime associates all over the country back in the 60s. Got some great information from those. Sylvia talking freely in her apartment. Candidly, because she doesn’t know anybody’s list. And they had him in Tony Giacalone’s home juice company in Detroit also. And Sylvia was often a topic of conversation over there as well. By the way, Tony Giacalone was Sylvia’s paramour for many years. They had a long affair. People who think that Sylvia had an affair with Hoffa that produced Chucky O’Brien, [9:28] And that is not accurate. Chucky, we know who Chucky’s father was. He was a criminal out of St. Louis from the time he was a boy and went to prison when he was a young guy, was recruited from prison to come to Kansas City and work as a driver, for none other than Charlie Banagio. And so that put him right at the center of the action. [9:53] And Sylvia, having married the young man that put her right, she was already at the center of the action because she knew all the movers and shakers in the North End at that time already from the time she was a girl. But they became very much a part of Banagio’s network. And this was one fact that really blew me away that I didn’t know. And I don’t think you know it or Owsley or O’Malley or really anybody in Kansas City that Charlie Banagio was Chuckie O’Brien’s godfather. Yeah, I didn’t know that. Yeah. That is interesting. So Sylvia Pagano, she lives down there in the North End, what we call the North End folks, which is our little Italy. There’s a big church that anchors that neighborhood. And that’s where all the people came from Southern Italy and Sicily, moved into Kansas City and were associated with the church down there. After them, the Vietnamese came in and the church sponsored a lot of the Vietnamese and settled in that same neighborhood as it became a shifting neighborhood. So she’s down over there in Little Italy or the North End. And she meets a guy named Michael. Was it Three Fingers? [11:03] Oh, yeah. Frankie. Frankie Three Fingers. Coppola. Coppola, yeah. So tell us about that relationship. Yeah, that’s really interesting because Frankie Three Fingers… Hasn’t really been chronicled much as part of the Kansas City family. Because he was a roving guy, he had a lot of clout in both Italy and the U.S., and he had memberships in multiple families, and he was a high-ranking status too. So wherever he went, whether it was Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis, New York, New Orleans, he was all over the place, and he was well-respected wherever he went. But he was in Kansas City for quite a long time. He was strongly associated with Padagio. And it appears from all the evidence, as well as testimony from organized crime experts in Detroit, that Frankie Three Fingers escorted Sylvia to Detroit after her marriage with Charles O’Brien ended in about 1941 in Kansas City. [12:13] So Sylvia arrives in Detroit on the arm of Frank Coppola, and that put her on the fast track to getting to know the upper echelon of the Detroit family and mobsters, top mobsters beyond Detroit. Coppola was associated with Costello in his slot machine racket down in New Orleans. [12:36] And later, after he got deported back to Italy, He worked with Lucky Luciano to put together the whole narcotics syndicate network that included the French Connection. So tremendously influential as a mobster. Sylvia could really not have picked a more influential and well-connected guy as a boyfriend. That really put her on the fast track to getting to know a lot of the most powerful guys in the country. Really interesting guy. Frank Copeland. I’ll just say it and maybe someone else can run with it. I don’t know if it’ll be me or not, but he would make a great subject for a book. Yeah, he’s not very well known. And the mob used to have this guy, Nikolai Gentile. He traveled around to different families and brokered different deals. I think back before communication was so fast and you didn’t fly from one city to the other, you had to take a train. That’s a whole day on the train to get one city to the other. Telephone communication wasn’t that good. You didn’t hardly make long distance phone calls back there in the 20s and 30s. I don’t think they were hard. So you have guys like this that then travel around and take messages that are trusted by the different cities. And so he had to be one of those guys. [13:52] You’re exactly right. In fact, he knew Nicola Gentile. [13:58] Gentile is also, I speak about him in this book also. He plays a role, a pretty important one, and he describes some events that are really fascinating. This story actually doesn’t begin in Kansas City. It begins in Pueblo, Colorado. There’s three geographic areas that are really emphasized in this story. Pueblo, Colorado, Kansas City, and Detroit. But Nicola Gentili and Frank Coppola knew each other in the United States, and they knew each other in Italy. And you’re exactly right, they had a similar role as traveling diplomats within the mafia. Very interesting. Not too many other guys, especially later on. They had Johnny Roselli, who was really well-traveled, and some others. But in those early days, a couple of these guys, Coppola, Gentile, I don’t know if there was any others or not, but that was what they did. They were all over the place, and they were so well-connected, and they really had memberships in multiple families. And that seems to have faded away later. You didn’t hear too much about guys that had more than one member. So occasionally somebody would switch families, but yeah, they were really interesting, [15:11] real, what you would call international mystery men, I think. Interesting. So she had an affair with him, and he brought her up to Detroit and started making connections in Detroit, if I remember the story right, with the Jackalones. And so what. [15:27] Take us on from there. How does she then move in with Hoffa? And she’s like in the middle between the Peckerwood truck drivers and the Italian mob, which they both needed each other and they worked well together for a long time. So how does she end up in the center of that? Yeah, she’s still quite young when she gets to Detroit. She’s just early 20s, maybe mid 20s at that point. But and here she is she’s immediately meeting all of the wise guys but she was still she needed a job she needed work i’m sure coppola helped her out to some extent but he had his own wife he had his own he probably had another mistress or two as well i mean she needed to make a she needed to make a living and raise her son chucky and um she got a job with the teamsters at that time in In Detroit, unions were strong. There was a lot of unions, and it was the capital of industrial unionism at that time. And so that just became a natural choice. She ended up meeting Burke Brennan initially, actually, even before Hoffa. Brennan was Hoffa’s right-hand guy. [16:36] And he gave her a job with the Teamsters as a salter. She was an organizer, and a good one, and a legit organizer. But her specialty was salting. Now, what’s that? So she was a union representative, and she would get a job in a factory or a warehouse, just an ordinary job. And she would go to work, just like everybody else, punch the clock. But while she was there, her real objective was signing other people up to join the union. So she’s like a secret agent in a way, buried into the normal workforce, but with a real different agenda. And she was real good at it. And the union guys noticed that she worked really hard and she was loyal and that she would keep her mouth shut. And so those were the same qualities that the mob guys admired. So this was at the time, though, and this is very important, when most of the unions and the mob were still at odds with each other. Back then, the gangsters were getting hired by companies to break strikes and to oppose unions. [17:47] And there was a particularly bad strike going on. It lasted a long time. The Teamsters were striking the Detroit Lumber Company. This was at about 42. And it was violent. And Hoffa could see the writing on the wall that the Teamsters were losing the battle. It went on and on. It was violent. And that’s where Sylvia Pagano stepped in. Burt Brennan told Jimmy Hoffa he should talk to Facci. Facci was Italian for face. And that was Sylvia’s nickname that she got when she was young back in Kansas City. Had a very pretty face. And so they called her the face. So Hoffa talked to Fauci and she set up a basically like a summit meeting peace conference, more or less. And they brokered a deal where the mob switched sides and became allies with the Teamsters against the Detroit Lumber Company. So that was really the moment that changed history, brought the mafia into the Teamsters orbit and vice versa. And that’s all traceable right back to Sylvia Pagano. [18:55] Wow. That’s interesting. I always wondered what the genesis of that was with Hoffa and the mob. And of course, we can see how it developed, but what that actual birth of that was. I think you’ve stumbled across the birth of it. You also… [19:11] We’re able to stumble across the birth of the Eastern families and New York families connection to Hoffa, which that that gets even bigger. Tell us a little bit about that. She was involved in that, believe it or not, guys. And just like in Detroit, back in New York, there’s Johnny Dio. He was busting up labor union strikes for the companies. Yeah, I think that to some degree in New York, New Jersey, that some Teamsters locals had already been infiltrated by the mafia independently and maybe unbeknownst to Hoffa in Detroit. But it really became a big thing with Hoffa and with Sylvia’s brokering that alliance. Little isolated examples of mob infiltration, I think, were already happening in Detroit. But once again, as Hoffa’s progressing in his career, moving up the ranks, he always had his eye on the top job. He wanted to be the president of the IBT. And of course, he knew he needed help in the Northeast for that, to realize that goal. And so with Sylvia helped set up meetings with Tony Ducks Corral Johnny Diagordi Tony Provenzano and Sylvia had gotten to know Provenzano in Detroit because he had strong connections to Detroit let’s see his cousin was married to. [20:39] Tony Giacalone’s cousin was married to Tony Pro, I believe, or vice versa. That’s your book. Yeah. I’d have to go back and read my own book. Yeah, it’s hard to keep up. Hard to remember all the details. All these players. Giacalone’s cousin was married to Provenzano. And so Sylvia had already met Provenzano in Detroit. And Chucky, her son, had already started calling him Uncle Tony. And so she had this great connection to Provenzano. And so she helped facilitate the Teamsters Mob Alliance in New York and New Jersey, just as she had in Detroit. And then it goes on from there. Then she later, we’re moving forward now, but she would later become the link between Hoffa and his closest contact in Cleveland, which was Moe Daylitz. She became the link between Hoffa and Alan Dorfman in Chicago. And she became the link between Hoffa and the Sevilla brothers in Kansas City. So she really was, and this is all, they taught, there’s a, from those FBI tapes, those illegal FBI tapes, we have Tony Zarelli and Nick Sevilla in Florida speaking about Sylvia Pagano and her relationship as a liaison between the Detroit family and between the Kansas City family. Like, there’s your proof right there. Not that you need it. She was really… [22:09] The guys, a lot of them really liked, adored her in the sense of she did have an affair with a couple of them, and she was a good-looking woman. A lot of them had, Moe Dalitz was known to have a crush on Sylvia, possibly an affair with Sylvia. But she was more than your mob mole, right? She was a dealmaker. She was an advisor. She was a liaison. She brought money to the table. She did deals with the guys. She helped broker some pension fund loans, all these things. So what I like to say about Sylvia is that we all know that the mob never inducted women into their ranks. But if they had, Sylvia Pagana would have been their first choice because she worked hard. She was loyal. [22:56] She kept her mouth shut. And she really lived truer to the code than some of the men did. She was 100% omerta. She really was. and she learned that in the north end of Kansas City, where Umerta was extremely strong even up into this century after it wasn’t so strong in other places and so she passed that on to Chucky O’Brien. He was also a real strong adherent to the code of silence. Yeah, I think we have to remember Chucky O’Brien was half Italian. His father was Italian. No. [23:33] So his mother, Sylvia, was the Italian. Mother, Sylvia, yeah. Yeah, his dad was Irish. Yeah, I got that mixed up. Exactly, asked backwards. But yeah, he was half Italian. And so he really talked the talk, and he moved right in. All these guys were like his uncle, Uncle Nick, Uncle Quirk, and that kind of thing. So he came back to Kansas City. Tell a little bit about Chuckie O’Brien and Kansas City. Yeah, so in 1950, he’d been in Detroit for about nine years by that point. 1950, he’s getting into high school age, and Sylvia sent him back to Kansas City to live on Independence Avenue with his grandparents, and he went to Cardinal Glennon High School. [24:13] And became a good athlete, started dating a gal from the old neighborhood who was a lot like Sylvia. I think that’s really interesting because Chucky really idolized his mother, but he never really, when he was young at least, got to spend as much time with her as he wanted. He spent a lot of time back in Kansas City. He spent a lot of time at his uncle’s house in Detroit because Sylvia was so busy with Hoffa and with the mob. So here’s Chucky in Kansas City. He meets a gal from Sylvia’s old neighborhood who has other things in common with Sylvia and who even looks, in my opinion, quite a lot like Sylvia. And he would eventually take her back to Detroit and marry her and have a family together. But his main objective, it really in Kansas City wasn’t so much going to school. It was becoming a truck driver. He wanted to become a truck driver so that he could put himself on the path to becoming a union organizer like his hero and surrogate father, Jimmy Hoffa. And according to Chucky, Uncle Nick and Uncle Cork got him his first job as a driver and got him his first union card with local 541. [25:23] And this was right at the time when Local 541 was becoming ground zero for labor strife and union corruption in the United States. And Gary, you said a key word earlier, which was Peckerwood. And that’s who was running the Kansas City Teamsters at the time. It was dominated by Peckerwood guys, country boys, basically, and like Hoffa. And these guys were just as bad as the Italian gangsters who were more famous. They ran those locals with intimidation and terror, and they were violent, and they were very ambitious. They had political power. [26:08] Make a long story short, in 1953 in Kansas City, we had an inter-union labor war. And it was the Teamsters versus almost every other union in town. And Teamsters were trying to dominate a lot of these other unions is what it was. And so you had a complete paralysis of the entire construction industry for three months. Imagine just all construction stopping for three months in any metro area and how devastating that is to the economy. 23,000 Kansas Citians were out of work. The Teamsters were refusing to pick up or deliver supplies. And that eventually morphed into violence and sabotage. You had guys going into battle at construction sites. People were getting badly injured. People were getting kidnapped. It was, and then furthermore, we had four military defense projects centered in the Kansas City area, and this is right at the height of the Korean War. So these military installations were suffering work stoppages also. So this was unacceptable in Washington. And Congress swooped in with hearings and an investigation. [27:17] And they called this, basically, it was, I think the exact language was something like the most forbidding chapter in the history of American unions, something like that. It was a big deal. This history has been mostly forgotten. But Kansas City was [27:32] completely paralyzed for about three months. And that was the union that was the local mainly primarily local 541 which chucky was a young member of he was too young at that time to get drawn into the politics of the union i don’t believe that he was on the front lines of these these battles and violence that was happening he was just a brand new truck driver at the time but he was part of that in the sense that he was a local a member of the local at the time this stuff was happening so yeah that’s that’s what happened when Chucky came back to Kansas City. [28:07] Interesting. And that must have been the time when Roy Williams started moving up the ladder and the mob was moving in and they moved this auto ring and some of his people out. And Roy Lee Williams must have, with the support of Nick Civella and the local mob, must have moved right on in. Yeah, that’s exactly what happened. The main guy behind all the strife and violence I was just talking about was Orville Ring, classic quintessential Peckerwood guy and then after all this happened Hoffa swooped in and helped negotiate an end to these conflicts in 1953 and, And Nick Civella and his crime family, they were all watching all this from the wings, planning and scheming. Wow, there’s a lot going on here. How can we capitalize on this? [28:50] So in the aftermath of it all, the Savellas basically intimidated Orville Ring out of the Union. He went back to his farm. Later, he was killed in an accident on his farm, which a lot of people thought was the mob, that the mob did it. But it looked probably just an accident. And I think a tractor rolled over on him or something like that. But yeah, Roy Williams. So at this time, just basically the Italians were taken over from the Peckerwoods. There were still some useful Peckerwoods, and they worked together. And Roy Williams was the key guy there. This is when Nick Civella and he started working together to take over the Teamsters in Kansas City. You’re exactly right. And the rest is history. Really? really. Roy Williams is an interesting guy. He was a war hero from World War II. He had several bronze stars and he was a huge war hero, but he knew which side of the bread got the butter. And so he went with that and he went with Nick Civella. And he did, he bucked up to him a few times, but Nick Civella, actually in a famous scene, Nick Civella had him picked up and driven somewhere and shined a bright light in his eyes and said, you will go along with this scheme. [30:05] So it’s, but he kept going along to almost, he almost, he did become the president of the union for a short period of time, almost right there at the end of his life and when everybody was going to jail. But he was Nick Civella’s protege and Nick Civella’s puppet for his whole life and the whole Teamsters union was. [30:24] Yeah and that story you mentioned with the white spotlight shining in his eyes they kidnapped him and took him into this empty warehouse and i always point to that as just one of those. [30:34] Terrifying stories about how the mob used to work and yeah man and that wasn’t the only time that they intimidated roy williams in that manner so he like you said he was this tough guy war hero He was a big guy, and yet even a guy like that can get intimidated into doing whatever these guys tell him to do because his tactics that they used were just terrifying. Yeah. I read one thing where he later on, he claimed when he turned and gave evidence and talked to the Bureau that he claimed that they also threatened his wife and children during one of these sit downs with him. I mean, they did the same thing to Alan Glick out in Las Vegas. Tuffy DeLuna was out there, and he read off Alan Glick’s name of his wife and his children. He said, you may find yourself expendable, but I don’t think you’re going to find your family expendable and read off their names. So there’s two good examples of them. Say that Bob never messes with your family. There’s two good examples of them using the family and family as threats. Yeah. [31:40] It’s very tough. Yeah, it is. I heard knowing Mo Dalitz, to me, that was key because he was such a mover and an operator. Talk a little more about that. He had been in Cleveland. He had to set her up with Bill Presser. And that was primarily Jewish mobsters in Cleveland, seemed to me like. And then he also had all those connections to Chicago to get to Red Dorfman, his son, Alan Dorfman. Talk a little more about that relationship with Mo Dalitz. In Mo Dalitz’s biography, I can’t think of the name of the author at the moment, but that author states that Sylvia was one of Mo Dalitz’s lovers. I’m not sure if that’s true or not. I do think that Mo Dalitz, at the very least, had a crush on Sylvia, but also respected her very much. And she, just as she had with the Detroit family before, she brokered an alliance with Daylitz. What happened was Daylitz had a laundry empire, was a rum runner and a racketeer and a leader in the Jewish mob. But he also had a lot of legitimate businesses, including a laundry empire in Detroit and Cleveland. [32:53] And while he was still in Detroit, before he really made his move to Cleveland, his permanent move to Cleveland, his laundries, along with other laundry owners, they bonded together in an association. And they were very anti-union. And they were basically at odds with the Teamsters. And until Sylvia swooped in. And Sylvia had her own connections by now to the Laundry Workers Union also. So she’s working for the Teamsters, and she’s very close to Hoffa, but she then married a guy named John Paris, who was the head of the Laundry Workers Union. [33:32] So Sylvia knows Hoffa, and she knows the head of the Laundry Workers Union very closely, and she knows Dalitz. So she’s the one who’s positioned to bring these people together, sit them down at the same table, and start working together, start negotiating. And that’s what she did with Daylitz. And so that led to Daylitz paying off Hoffa, basically, to settle this contract on terms that were favorable to Daylitz and the other laundry owners. [34:07] But you could say that Hoffa, in that case, sold out his members, at least at that time. Now, I do want to make it clear that most rank-and-file teamsters for many decades loved Hoffa because he definitely did negotiate some great contracts that brought truck drivers into the middle class, got them very good pay and benefits. And it’s only fair, it’s only right to give him credit because as somebody once said about Hoffa. [34:33] He was always a criminal, but also always a teamster. And he worked very hard for his membership. He never stopped working. And it was sincere, I do believe. But there were times when he, the ends justified the means and he did whatever he had to do to keep the union alive, but also to serve himself and enrich himself. And that was one of those cases where the membership lost out a little bit when Hoffa and Daylitz formed their alliance with the initiation and the help of Sylvia Pagano. Interesting. So let’s go back to Chucky O’Brien for a minute. He goes back up from Kansas City. He ends up back up in Detroit and working very closely with Jimmy Hoffa. And you talked to his son. Yeah. And to make that, and he was probably a huge help and some insight into what his father was like. So talk about Chucky O’Brien when he got back with Hoffa. Yeah, so he goes back to Detroit. [35:31] And he steps right back into the Hoffa family circle because Sylvia became part of the Hoffa family. She was Josephine Hoffa’s best friend. Jimmy Hoffa relied on her not only for important work in the union and for important connections to the mob, but he also relied on her heavily as Josephine’s personal assistant and caretaker. Sylvia worked extremely hard serving other people. And she was an excellent caretaker to Josephine who needed a lot of care, had very poor health, made worse by severe alcoholism. And Sylvia was a wonderful caretaker. But Chucky stepped right back into that family orbit. Later, when his own kids were small, Chucky and his wife and his kids moved into the Hoffa house. They’d all lived under the same roof for quite a few years. But Sylvia was really the glue that kept it all together and Chucky’s son who’s also named Chuck O’Brien he was a young boy at this time so his memories of his grandmother. [36:42] And Jimmy Hoffa started when he was a young boy and continued up until Sylvia died when he was in his late teens, but he was a great source for the book helped out a lot I really appreciate him And it was interesting to have direct access to someone who actually lived under the same roof with Jimmy Hoffa. So he was not privy, young Chuck was not privy to any inside information or any mob dealings or anything like that. But he later moved to Kansas City and went to work in the River Key for his uncle at the Godfather Lounge, which just a couple of years later was torched in the River Key War. And then young Chuck had worked in professional hockey for a while. And then he became a truck driver and joined Local 41. And so all this history just comes full circle and repeats itself. And I was a little fascinated by these Sylvia’s grandkids who were born and raised in Detroit. They both ended up back in Kansas City in the land of their parents and their grandparents. And they ended up in the same neighborhoods that Sylvia had been born in many years before. [37:57] Interesting. And Chucky O’Brien, then he’s kind of Hoffa’s driver sometimes. And Aaron Renner on up to the end of Hoffa’s life was even implicated at the very end. Some people claim that he helped set Hoffa up because he was the one person that Hoffa trusted. And that one movie, The Irishman or whatever, really threw a lot of shade on Chucky O’Brien. So how did you deal with that. [38:21] Yeah, I think Chucky got a real bad rap, and as I used to study Hoffa and read all the Hoffa books, I always thought, I always had a very low opinion of Chucky O’Brien, and he became the butt of a joke, and he was portrayed as this blundering, not-too-bright guy who either helped kill his surrogate father or was duped into giving him a ride to where he was killed without knowing what was going on and without being able to, realize it to the point where he could have maybe helped Hoffa. I think Jack Goldsmith put all that to rest. He really changed my opinion of Chucky in his book, but I realized that Chucky had been misunderstood in many ways. Was he involved in Hoffa’s disappearance or not? I think Goldsmith basically vindicates Chucky. [39:15] However, I do believe that there’s still some evidence that could strongly suggest that even in light of what Goldsmith wrote, that Chucky could still have known more than he let on. But he was so committed to Emerita that he took a lot of secrets to his grave, I believe. What’s interesting is some of the other co-conspirators in the Hoffa thing ended up dead, like Sally Buggs, and got killed in Little Italy a few years later, and the prevailing wisdom, at least, was to, keep him quiet about the Hoffa case. And they would have probably done the same thing to Chucky if Chucky could have pointed the finger at anybody or implicated anybody. And I’m sure he could have. I’m sure he knew some things about that. He was so close to Giacalone. Chucky was very close to Tony Giacalone and to Tony Provenzano. [40:07] And I think that Chucky survived because Giacalone trusted him 100% just as Sylvia Pagano’s son. Giacalone’s trust in Chucky to not give anybody up was just so rock solid. And he loved Chucky. And I think that he was also honoring Sylvia by allowing Chucky to stay alive. So I know I’m straying from your initial question, Gary. There’s so much going on with the whole Chuck O’Brien thing and his involvement. It gets very interesting. You have to get really down in the weeds with it to understand all of it. But I think that Goldsmith’s book is a great read for anybody who’s interested in Hoffa and the whole case. I definitely would recommend it. So it may come down to Chuck O’Brien. And was he more loyal to the mob, to the mafia and their code? Or more loyal to Hoffa and the Teamsters? as Hoffa as an individual, not to the teams or his union, but Hoffa as an individual. Was he more loyal to Hoffa or more loyal to the union or more loyal to the mob? And giving up those guys, he has to turn his back on everything. [41:21] The union and the mob. And so I can see where he, whatever he knew, [41:25] he was not going to say a word. It would be to his advantage. He has no, they didn’t have a hammer on him. Wasn’t a criminal. They didn’t have a life sentence hanging over his head for anything. They did have, they did prosecute Chucky on a federal case. It was a small time thing. He took some, maybe took some gifts from a, from an employer in his role as a union guy, some small gifts. And then he had also got caught up in a cargo theft case, which is all documented in the book, Office of Connection. But the law enforcement did have a couple of cases that they could apply pressure onto Chucky. But he didn’t say a word, and he just went to prison and served his time. He didn’t have to serve too much time. He was only in for about a year, I think. It was a low-level felony. But he just, he’d never thought once about turning state’s witness. He just went and served his time and got back out and went on with his life. [42:25] Yeah. It’s those 50 and 75-year sentences that’ll make the right attorneys. You get even, I used to say, when they came up, those sentencing guidelines for cocaine dealers, you could make a guy talk about his mother when he’s looking. He’s 40 years old and he’s looking at a 50, 75-year sentence. Yeah. I do have to say, though, if there’s one guy that might, and there was a few of them who went and served a hard time. Yeah, a long time until they’re old. Rather than give anybody else up. And I think Chucky would have been one of those guys. I do. Yeah. [42:57] Having been raised by sylvia pagano he was just so committed to that culture and those traditions and that way of life and and omerta yeah sylvia even had almost a kind of a halfway making ceremony for chucky she arranged for the top guys in detroit when he came back to detroit from kansas city in the early 50s tony giacalone put together a little event where chucky walked into the back room of grecian gardens restaurant in detroit and all the top guys were sitting around a table and he made a pledge of loyalty to them at that time and then he sat down and broke bread with them and he didn’t prick his finger and burn a card and he wasn’t made into the family but it was all halfway a little bit and they did that for sylvia and because they just valued her so much they respected her and they needed her they she was the connection to their most valuable asset, which was Jimmy Hoffa. So that tells you a little bit about how much respect they had for Sylvia and also for Chucky’s unique role. Here he is. [44:05] He’s he’s the son of charlie banagio’s low-level chauffeur yeah and yet he’s sitting down with guys like meyer lansky in florida he’s sitting down with all the top guys in detroit chicago inu acardo rica rosanova all these top guys in chicago then he would sit down with them on behalf of jimmy hoff he was he probably i say in the book that he probably had more chucky o’brien the son of, Banagio’s chauffeur probably had more sit-downs with high-level mobsters than Nick Civella did. As Hoffa’s representative, that was the life. And he knew how to handle that kind of thing because he was raised by Sylvia. So he knew how to say, what not to say, how to behave himself in those types of meetings. So that came naturally to him. And he was Hoffa’s gopher. He drove in places. He took Hoffa’s wife to her medical appointments. He did low-level stuff like that, but he also did more important work, more sensitive stuff, like sitting down with mob bosses and relaying information back and forth, just like as Sylvia had taught him to do. [45:16] That’s fascinating. I tell you what, guys, Frank Hayde, Hoffa’s Connection, the story of Sylvia Pagano, the Ken City girl at the center of the mafia’s alliance with the Teamsters Union. I might have links in here. You better get this book. This is untrod territory. Unplowed ground, as we used to say on the farm. This is fresh stuff that you’ve read. There’s so many books out there about Hoffa and his disappearance that they just want to, come on, we can’t do this. I can’t do this again, Hoffa’s disappearance. You’re never going to find his body. You’re never going to figure out exactly who killed him. Nobody’s going to talk, and anybody that could is dead. But this unearthed some really fresh, interesting information about Hoffa and his connection with the Italian La Cosa Nostra in the United States, the entire United States, really. Yes. Thank you, Gary. That was a very nice little summary of it. And I really appreciate you. You’ve had me on your show before, my other books, and I listened to your podcast. Can’t get enough of it. You do terrific work. All us wire trappers love you, man. And we all appreciate you very much. Thank you. Thank you. Yesterday, Frank had a program at the library, and we had a local guy who was a subject of his last book, Mafia Dreams, who was a mob hanger-on guy when he was a young guy. And he got caught up in a murder, an accidental murder in a way. That it’s a long story and you have to get mafia dreams to learn about it. The next generation of the wannabe. [47:25] Italian mafia guys in kansas city and so that guy was there he did 25 years 25 years for what we call felony murder another guy he transported a friend of his to a drug by only the guy killed the man was selling the or tried to kill the man that was selling the drugs and the fbi had it set up and ran in and shot and killed the kid who almanese had carried up to the drug ripoff and And so they charged this driver with felony murder, and he did 25 years, just got out about four or five years ago. He could have talked. He had enough to buy him a lot of grace on that 25-year sentence, and he did every minute of it. He never said a word, and it was hard time. It was state time here in Missouri. Yeah, I think that’s true. I think he is representative of Kansas City in a way, because I do believe that in Kansas City, the Code of Emerita persisted longer than most places. And yeah, when you’re 24 years old, I think he was 24 at the time that he was sentenced. Maybe he was 25 and you get sentenced to 25 and a half years. [48:38] And you have the chance to whittle that down by giving up information on your friends. And you don’t take it, and you choose to do the 25 and a half years, that’s hardcore. And he did, and those are the best years of his life that he’ll never get back. But he is out now, and he’s making a legitimate living and keeping his nose clean and just trying to make up for a lot of lost time. Yeah, he is. 25 years will straighten your mind out, won’t it? Tonight's guest, Michaela, lives on the Gold Coast of Australia and 41 years ago, in 1985, she had a Dogman encounter there. Today, we're talking about how we tell history, and specifically, how the media treats indigenous cultures. We are diving into the recent cultural history of the so-called Aztec Death Whistle. I've wanted to look into this topic for a while, but a recent horror movie about the whistle prompted a discussion on the Aztlantis discord, so I felt the time was right to dive into it. The main question at hand is how and why did the whistle enter popular culture? That indeed is an interesting question. Of all the things attributed to the Aztecs that people would gravitate towards, a whistle associated with death is going to make the list. Right? I mean think of other things that the public associates with the Aztecs – it's disproportionately related to violence and death. Even the explosion of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in the last 20 years, while a positive celebration of deceased loved ones, is still about death. Okay, so how did we get here with the whistle? It's useful to note that the Aztec Death Whistle has been known to archeologists since the 19th century. Scholars largely ignored it as a curiosity until 1999 when an archeological discovery in Tlatelolco changed the perception and led to a more serious investigation of the whistle. The site held the remains of an individual clasping a whistle in each hand, and this led to a momentary surge on the topic. We'll get to that later, but first, back to the article.As I was looking around, I found a 2021 article from the Daily Science Journal by Alex Mitchell entitled “The Aztec Death Whistle is History's Reminder That the Aztecs were Terrifying.” The title of this piece says it all (what a goober, this guy). listener comments? Be sure to check out his channel using the link below.In this episode, Fred shares Ralph's chilling early-1980s encounter on the Willow side of Hatcher Pass, where what began as a routine trip to set up a travel trailer on soft breakup ground quickly turned into something far more terrifying. Ralph first believed he had spotted a bear near the treeline, but the massive figure he saw soon revealed itself to be something far more humanlike, standing an estimated nine-and-a-half to ten feet tall.Over the following days and nights, the activity around the trailer intensified with guttural growls, strange clicking sounds, older tracks, and what appeared to be a worn path leading dangerously close to the trailer window.The encounter escalated when the trailer was violently tipped onto its side during a night of terrifying growls.Ralph fired at the figure in the darkness and later discovered broken windows that had to be patched. On another night, he woke to see a large hand reaching through one of those broken windows, fired again, and then heard heavy movement across the roof.After finding stacked lumber shoved deep into the ground, Ralph finally left the property and never returned. What begins as a routine hunting trip quickly turns unsettling when the men hear strange whistling in the dark, spot a massive shadowy figure, and witness Rodolfo's friend panic after shining a spotlight on what appears to be an angry, towering creature. As the encounter escalates, gunshots are fired when the figure comes within ten feet of them.Later, Rodolfo sees the creature from a distance, only for the terror to continue that night near their landing area, where he reports eyeshine, a nearly ten-foot-tall figure baring its teeth, brushing dirt from itself, and letting out a terrifying scream before the men arrange an early pickup by radio.The second account centers on Alvin and Myrna, an Athabascan couple hiking Devil's Creek Trail in February 2020 with their nine-month-old Tibetan Mastiff. During the hike, something begins mimicking Myrna's voice in an apparent attempt to lure the dog away. Tonight's guest, Eric, has had some experiences in his life that were much more frightening than what most people have experienced. Eric used to live in a haunted house and one of the most frightening experiences he's had happened when he was in the shower one night. When he had that experience, he was standing in the shower when all of a sudden, he saw what he thinks was a demon come into the bathroom with him. When he saw that happen, it frightened him so much, he jumped out of the shower, threw his pants on, and ran out of the house. Of course, that experience really shook him up, but it still isn't the most frightening experience he's had. So it's stopping following everyone else's bullshit templates and moving into a space where you're listening to your own gut, you're following your own rules, and it doesn't mean you're rebelling against anything, and it doesn't mean you have to be angry at everyone. You know the stage of life can come with a little perimenopausal rage, which is always welcome in my world. But I work with both men and women to find a beat of their own drums so that they don't have to be checking in everyone's yards to see what they're doing and measuring themselves non stop. We're not in high school. I didn't do it in high school. I'm certainly not doing it now. So that is the fire that I like to bring to the world.Lesley Logan 3:27  Oh, I love that, and I love how clear you are in what you do. And I'm sure many people's ears perked up on the menopausal race, all that stuff, because I think, like one of the things that so I started doing this podcast years ago, and I'm like, I know who I am and people are trying to figure out why I'm so confident, and really, it's just because I do things scared. But then, like, you know, you start to get past 40, and you're like, why am I freaking out? Well, who? Why am I (inaudible). Shari Teigman 3:52  Fearless me? Lesley Logan 3:54  Yeah, why, why am I hesitating? Like, what? What is happening and and like, in being until I see it, it's like, wow, this is, like, a lifelong thing. Thank goodness I like doing this. But also, but also, like, it is interesting to get to know yourself again when you especially for the women who love the show and who we attract, who thought they did, and now they're like, kind of feeling like my girlfriend said today that she feels like she has, like, sea legs.Shari Teigman 4:20  Yeah, it's so nice of you to call it interesting, to get us to know ourselves, because I have some other choice words for the state of life while I accept it and rage, it's fascinating. And may not get all metaphysical here, and you're going to have to drag me into a crone phase of my life. I don't plan on going lightly or gracefully, but there is the no shits given point where we do get to course correct and say, okay, for those of us who did know ourselves for the past 15, 20, 30 years to check in that that's still what we want, or the identifications are still valid and accurate and have not expired just because everyone else like someone they work for everyone else. So it's a real face to the fire moment of I say I'm all these things. I better check in that I still am because I'm too tired and can't remember anything to pretend I'm something that I'm not. So I think it's a real truth telling phase. And like I said, I'm not planning on getting old and wise, but I will be loud and old and happy, fun. I just got to get through this can't remember my name thing, and then, you know, carry on to the next chapter. Lesley Logan 5:28  The other day, I saw this thing, and the guy was on Instagram, and the guy was like, hey, you meet someone who was born in 1995 and it's, they're 30 years old. And you're like, that's interesting. I'm 30 years old. And then I'm like, weird. And then I was like, wait, oh, I'm not I. I just keep thinking that I am.Shari Teigman 5:45  Yes, my eldest son turned 26 and I am not okay because I'm 22 and I'm not good at math, but that is not math. That is off, all off. Lesley Logan 5:50  So you said we have to, like, check in with ourselves. And I think that that is, like, a brilliant thing that no one has told us to do, right? Like, as you grow up, everyone's like, what do you want to be when you grow up? And then you go to school to be that thing, and you're like, check the box. And I think all the high flyers are good box checkers. Like, check this box and check that box and and so we've checked all the boxes, and then we get to a place, it's like, but how do you check in? Like, you add more boxes. What? What did you do, Shari? Like, how do you check in to see if these are the things you still want?Shari Teigman 6:22  So it's a long answer, Lesley. Lesley Logan 6:24  I'll take it. Shari Teigman 6:27  For me, I have, I have decluttered the boxes many times, because for the first 33 years of my life, I fit very well into the boxes I was supposed to that I was given. And I did a great job, and I was funny about it and zesty about it, and Miss bubbly and head cheerleader and exactly what you think I was like at 18. I still am like at 51 and I went through a really rough divorce in my early 30s as a mom of two kids, and after a couple of years of survival and just knowing what I didn't want, which is a very painful but beautiful process I can say now later, that not knowing what I want, Liz Gilbert had a great I saw her in an interview, and I love her. In my head, she's my best friend, but she just doesn't know it yet. So we'll let her know it's fine. But my bestie, Liz said on this podcast, she went through an era which was called not this. So everything became not this, not this, not this. Most of us think we have to know what we want, and you said it, we're asked when we're younger, what do you want to be? I have no idea what the hell I want to be. I have no idea what the things are my options. So I can pick something off the cereal shelf and not know what's inside. And then, because I said it, I then went to school for it, and then I wore the t-shirt for it, and I told everyone about it, and I posted on social media about it. I can't not do it now. So we wear these costumes for a while, and then they start getting tight and uncomfortable, and not because of the perimenopausal weight. I mean, internally. And then you say, wait, am I allowed to put it down? Is the question I asked myself. So in this, not this phase, at the end of my divorce with these two amazing kids that I love, I then free myself from a situation and I saw black because I had no idea who I was and I had no idea what I wanted. I hadn't gotten up to asking myself that question, probably for the first time in my life at 34. Terrifying, highly don't recommend, but we got here. And so I think at that point, I stripped away everything that I knew and said, well, if none of this was true, what if I could be anything? So hence, the Maverick was born after, I mean, I make it sound really nice, there were a lot of crying on the floor and break down in the therapist's office. And I had had psychiatrists call me scrappy. He's like, you don't need meds, you're scrappy, you'll be fine. I blew up at him, and I don't react to anyone. I was like, I get a reward for being able to constantly be in survival mode. Americans, brace yourself. He refunded me my $250 which does not happen in our country. He was so apologetic that he pissed me off so much he probably got all the rage that everyone in my life until then had not gotten. It was amazing. So the long answer is, I checked in, and all of a sudden nothing felt like me. And while that was scary, it was so liberating, because I didn't have to fit new stuff into an old package. I was like, wee let's just turn the whole thing upside down, and I rebuilt what I wanted and put the right things back in in the drawer, instead of whose is this sock? Like example I always use is, I think the first piece of finding yourself is unpacking. So let's say you go on a girl's weekend with a bunch of friends, and the last night's a little blurry. No one remembers how they got to the airport. You get home, you open your polka dotted suitcase, and there's a red shoe. You don't have a red shoe. You go into the WhatsApp group, you're like, hi, guys, has everyone thrown up yet? Anyone's red shoe? Does this belong to anyone? Of course, you know it's not yours. But in our lives, we walk around carrying everyone else's red shoes and polka dotted bags and pile of crap, and you walk around wheeling it with you, because you call it identity, you call it belonging, you call it your culture, your religion, your family, your blah, blah, blah. And you open up this bag and it's filled with shit you don't know so you have no room for new stuff. So you and I's come into the world with all this passion and all this excitement, and everyone's hands are filled wondering, where do I put one more thing? You have to unpack, and you have to understand why you keep repacking the same thing in order to then get a chance to make any choices.Lesley Logan 10:33  That is an I love that long answer so much because it's like the simple like, the part that we all wanted to hear was like the short answer, oh, just do these three things. Shari Teigman 10:44  I can't do it because I don't believe it. And I used to listen to it and cry and think I was broken because I don't have that availability. So now what do I do? Lesley Logan 10:51  Yeah, and I also like, thank goodness, like, that guy gave that money back. I can't believe there was a guy and he gave his money back. I can't believe it was a man who told you you don't need drugs. But I can't believe apologize (inaudible) because one of the things that like, I it like, is nailed on a chalkboard when someone goes, oh, you're just so resilient. I'm like, I don't want to be resilient anymore.Shari Teigman 11:14  And I hang that one up because I know, and I know you all appreciate it, but it's killing me from the inside, so (inaudible) anymore? Thank you for appreciating it. Lesley Logan 11:25  Right because also, like, of course, as a business owner, as someone who's still, like making the money we need to make till we're retired and living our best life. Resiliency is great in my day to day, like operating my business, but like being resilient in my friendships and my family-ships and all that stuff, it's like, no, because then you don't ever check on me. No one checks on me. Shari Teigman 11:43  And also, we don't know how to ask for help yet then, because it's already uncomfortable and there's no room for it, so you're like, but can I? No, can't, no. Lesley Logan 11:51  Why can't I ask you because I'm holding your red shoe. I can't ask you because I'm holding your red shoe. Shari Teigman 11:56  And I never learned how, so I guess I'm the red shoe holder now.Lesley Logan 12:01  Okay, so, but then, like, so we have to, I love the not this, and I love the unpacking. I think that that is so key. It's, I mean, like, you know, there's something I want to, I want to do in our business, and it requires letting go of some other things. Like, you can't, can't just keep adding to the, you know, it's so then it's unraveling. Like, well, what am I letting go of? And what? What does that look like? And for everyone listening who is freaking out, I'm not letting go of the things that you're paying for, don't worry. It's like, doesn't affect you. It's not affecting you. There's no change affecting you. Okay? It's affecting the people who work (inaudible) I know I'm like, it's affecting, it's affecting the people who work for me. It's not affecting you. You have to stipulate, because people start to freak out, like, so, but thankfully, I understand that right, like the old, the old me would have been like, okay, let's just, let's just, let's just add these, undo that expander zipper and, like, shove, we'll just shove this in. So I love that. I know that about myself now, and I think that that is the real key. But I think, you know, you Shari, got to figure that out kind of in your 30s and so, and like, I find that a lot of people are figuring out in perimenopause, as they're freaking out and don't know themselves, and now they have to unpack. And that's a I find, I still, I feel nervous for that, because is it a hard time to, like, relearn who you are, or is it the best time to relearn how you are?Shari Teigman 13:21  Both. It's hard and the best time. Because as crazy as this sounds, because from a neuroplasticity place, we can't hold on to as much of the story as we did because of the brain fog and the hormones changing, there's a release valve comes. But what's terrifying about it is we never had it before. So the feeling of loss of control is one that makes us want to grip to the old story, my old identity, the things that I achieved in my job before the younger people came in and take it, or technology's changing, or my kids no longer think I'm cool, or I've been with my husband 40 years. I can't even hear him chew anymore. You know, like all the things that we hear from this rage that they don't realize is coming from a lack of tolerance, the tipping point in themselves of what they've made okay for themselves for all these years. So it comes out in a burst, because it's not going to come out any other way. There's not going to be everyone at 2pm everyone open up their computers, scream, and then close it, and we'll all feel better. I mean, I feel like we should start this. The world would be a much better place. But since we don't have it, we wait until everything is chaotic and we hate everything, and then we have to start looking at it. So the kind of stuff I teach, when I teach with FemGevity and with a lot of my private clients, is just starting to ask yourself better questions. Instead of assuming it's only this one category of life, it gives you more permission to be creative. I think if we move from fear to curiosity, we ask better questions, we get better answers. It doesn't mean I'm asking anyone to change anything yet, but when was the last time you made a decision that fit for you? I know it hurts, because even as I teach it, I'm like, brace yourself, girls, because we're going in and I'm going in there with you, oh, my god, I haven't made a decision for myself or I didn't think of my partner, or I didn't think of my team, or I didn't think of my kids, or I didn't think what my family is going to think. I don't know. I don't know the last time I asked myself that. So then I have someone just start with an easy thing. What do you want for dinner? And it's heartbreaking to ask a woman in their 40s and 50s, what she wants for dinner, and she looks at you with a blank look because she doesn't know. She (inaudible) went to what do I have leftovers for the kids, for tomorrow, for school? What can my husband take? What did I get from the supermarket that's about to spoil? I asked what you want for dinner, and then the tears go. What kind of TV do you want to watch? What sheets do you want on the bed? And we're talking professional, high achieving women who just look completely blankly at no one ever taught me to I wouldn't, wasn't allowed to ask a question. There was no space in my high achieving masculine run life and then emotional vulnerability that I have to hide. Who has space for it? So I think if we allow ourselves in this perimenopausal phase to say the exploration can be curious and creative and playful and find community to do it in. You're not crazy or we're all crazy together, and we're just going to figure this out, and there's no right or wrong answer, and no one is taking anything away from you. So it's in sovereignty we get to unpack one whole red shoe for another three years? Go right ahead, girl, no one's pulling the shoe away from you, but if we can slowly untangle the things that hurt us the most limit us the most, a lot of the other stuff sorts itself. It just feels like an emergency because we've never asked ourselves the question. Lesley Logan 16:38  Yeah, it feels like an emergency because I also think like we are so, our brains don't really know how to prioritize different things, so we the red shoe and the leftovers and that big merger you're working on, or whatever it is, they all take up the same priority level in the brain. So that's why they feel like that, right? But I want to highlight something, you said, untangle. And I think that's where a lot of people don't understand that that's such a key word I got to study with BJ Fogg and his and his habits training, and he talks about how to break a habit, which is, you have to, there's no such thing. It's not a stick. You have to unravel it. Because a habit is something that you no longer like, that you do, like a habit.Shari Teigman 17:21  I don't know how to make habits. I'm like, oh, sure, you do. Where's your chocolate habit? Where is your phone scrolling habit? Like you're an epic master at your habits. Everyone needs to be different. Who is it? We're wired.Lesley Logan 17:33  We're wired, you're, it literally is a brain wiring thing. And so untangling those things, and it's true, like when you can figure out, okay, I would like to untangle that I have I don't get to choose what I'm having for dinner. You know, then it becomes, you get to figure out, well, where did it start? Well, actually, maybe everyone you've been thinking about, everybody wants for dinner, and they actually thought you were thinking what you wanted for dinner.Shari Teigman 17:57  And also you're dead on. And it's a more gentle process. It's not like you walk into the family and say, you can all fuck off and make your own food. I want pasta, and they will look at you like, did you bang your head? And then that perimenopausal terror on everyone else's face, receiving the rage is like, oh, wait a second. Can everyone pick a night like they're gentle ways to do this. I actually want everyone else to make some decisions in this house, teenagers then feel empowered. A partner is then included. You get to pick, or guess what, you're allowed to eat something different than everyone else. It's most of these parameters we put on ourselves, and we blame everyone else because we didn't ask.Lesley Logan 18:34  Yeah, yes, no, I'm laughing so hard. Okay, so my husband, he's amazing at doing projects at night. Like, he like, he like, like, the sun goes down, I go to bed, and he is like, you know, he becomes the midnight gardener. Or, like, he puts together something, or, right before I turn this on, he's like, hey, did you see the thing I did in your office? Like, he put all the cords, you know, all the cords, in like, a little sleeve. So, like, it's nice. I know, we love him. Last night, he was doing the same thing he did the same thing he did the night before. The night before, I slept like the dead. I got like a 90% recovery, last night, 1:14 I'm hearing this like It's like drilling, and I am like, did I get up and go, hey, that's I just woke up to that. No. Instead, do you know I did? I sat there for 15 minutes going, when the fuck is it gonna be done? (inaudible) And then I marched down the hall, like, what the fuck are you doing? Shari Teigman 19:28  Why is this a good idea? Lesley Logan 19:31  Why are you doing this? And he's like, I did this last night. I didn't wake up last night. And I was like, well, clears in a different part of my rim cycle. I'm clearly in a different part of my cycle right now.Shari Teigman 19:44  Wind has blown. I am no longer who I was yesterday. You should have known that.Lesley Logan 19:49  Hello, but like, it's this funny thing, because we we do take on so much, and we wait until it's the paramount explosion to say what we're thinking instead of like, I thought, at at the moment I woke up, I thought, what is that noise? And if I had just been inquisitive it could have been, oh, hey, instead of, like, the and then, of course, did I sleep? No, I didn't sleep because I was angry.Shari Teigman 20:10  You weren't finished. You were still processing. You know, it comes like someone doesn't throw out a tissue and the whole house you're on fire just because you didn't say 14 other things because, oh, it's fine. It's fine. It's no longer fine, ladies, it, none is, nothing's fine. So we have to find our voices be kind, and realize we taught everyone else how to treat us so we don't get to be mad at them. We get to teach them what the next version of us needs, and most of us have no idea. So we get to sit down with our children, and we get to sit down with our partners and our friends and our family members, as terrifying as it is, and say there's a new sheriff in town, and I'm just getting to know her, and I need a little grace. And I like I know for my partner, I'm not speaking for him, but I could see the relief on his face when I'll actually say what I'm feeling, instead of him trying to guess which mood I'm in, or I say I have no idea what I need. And he's so relieved, because then he doesn't have to figure it out. Like the people who love us just want us better. Is it over yet? I wish it was over. I don't have cold. I'm just 51 it does. I don't know when it ends.Lesley Logan 21:17  I know that's the fun part. It's like, like, and also, and also, if you care about your heart health, ladies, you want to keep it going for a really long time, so then you better figure out how to talk about what you need and how to manage is the, not the word I want to because I don't like the way that it sounds, but like navigate or dance with all of this change, because once you are on the other side of this and your brain has changed and all the things, then you get to worry about your heart. So I'm just gonna say like you might want to lengthen this out and figure out who you want to be.Shari Teigman 21:54  Also, what an opportunity. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I like to take the funny side of life. If we already feel like shit. Why don't we start unpacking when we already feel like shit? I'm not gonna wait till I feel better to then figure it out. I'll be much more honest with myself if I have frustration. It's like, you know what? I don't want to do that anymore, even though I've done it every Tuesday for the past 20 years. I'm good. I don't want to apologize for it. No is a complete sentence. I don't have to be unkind. But I'm done. I'm done with that task at work. People then learn your new boundaries, and weirdly, they adjust faster than we do. No one else stays up at night worrying about this. Oh, she wants something different, cool. Oh, God, I should have said that 20 years ago. Why didn't I say that 20 years ago? Lesley Logan 22:35  Yeah, yeah. Well, and that's, that is, I think, where a lot of people get stuck. It's like, why, why? And it's like, almost like it's that is worth exploring. And also, in the meantime, just start sticking up for yourself now.Shari Teigman 22:46  Process it later but we'll get to it. And I find a lot of my clients, both men and women, are so terrified to put down what they've been doing, because if they realize that it's much easier to get unstuck than it was to get stuck, they're mortified at how long they tortured themselves, in their mindset, in their performance, in their roles, in what they made true. I could just decide tomorrow not to be stressed about that. Obviously, there's more to it. But then, what do I do with the 20 years of torture that's I have to reconcile that I lost that time, or I gave that away, or I let someone else make decisions for me, it's painful, but we don't have to sit in it, acknowledge it, and say, I'm not going to lose any more days.Lesley Logan 23:28  Yeah, yeah. I guess, like, do they need to I mean, do they need to feel the pain? Do they need to grieve? How do they what is the best way to acknowledge it so that they can, you know, keep going with the new way and be satisfied in that?Shari Teigman 23:41  I love the question, because most people think I can't do that. You have no choice if you want to get there. I believe that equal to the level of joy and fulfillment and peace you want, you have to be willing to go as deep as you want to go high it's we don't get to close off one door and then think, you know the arrow is going to stretch without pulling it back. So I like to call it the glorious end. I can be pissed off and ready. I can be terrified and excited. I can be sad and elated about something. So if I don't allow the emotion, the emotion will sneak up on me when I don't want it, it will come out in the who put the empty cereal box back in the cabinet. It'll come out at work when it should have come out at home and vice versa. It'll come out in too small a new decision, because I don't have the bandwidth to make the real decision I want. Why would we waste more energy? So for me, I tell everyone, men and women, feel it. Punch a pillow. Cry in a pillow, write it out. Burn it out, whatever your ritual needs to be dance it out, bang it out. I'm actually coming out with a journal in a few months that is basically, it's called The Maverick Way: A Field Guide to Coming Undone on Purpose. And every exercise is more ridiculous than the next one. And it's like, the Fuck It Resume is one of them. Like, what are the things you're terrible at? Write it out like we have to tell the truth so we can't. Pretend to only have the highlight reel, and then feel like a human being I am awful at some things, which reminds me of why I'm so good at other things. Then I've got my own way. I don't know what I want. Of course, you don't know. You don't know who you are. You're not willing to say I'm not good at that. Knowing that bothers me. That makes me cry. Am I too much? Okay, am I too little for someone else? Okay. We have to take all of these rules away, feel what we need to feel, and say, I know that might not make may not make you sad, Lesley, but I've been thinking about this for 40 years, and I need to sit in this for a couple of hours and just grieve what I made okay, or mourn what I lost, the conversations I didn't have, the jobs I didn't get, the pain I allowed myself because I didn't want to hurt anyone else, like ow, that hurts, and we get tired of the feeling very quickly when we let it stick it out, when you avoid it, it will chase your ass everywhere and pop up when you don't want it. I am going to grieve, because it's part of my process of making space for something new. I'm unpacking. So I'm unpacking, and I'm understanding. In my unpack, I'm really angry at my third grade teacher because she told me that I couldn't do something, and I believed her for the next 30 years, and she wouldn't even remember who I was. So I already think it. I might as well let myself, let it come up, journal it out, write it on the wall, scream it, throw it, laugh at it. Whatever you need. You get a freedom. There's just a release. As soon as you have release, just like in our bodies, you know, Pilates, yoga, what do you do? Breathe deeper into it so it releases. Grip it. You're all in grip. You know, it's a Chinese finger, that's trapped, it's not getting out. So how do we get out of where we're trapped? We release. We go deeper in, and then we can come out. It sounds scary, but if we don't judge emotions for right or wrong, we'll just feel what I need to feel. I don't need it anymore.Lesley Logan 26:45  Oh, I love this so much. And also, are you gonna do a fuck it retreat? Because you could do a fucking retreat where we could have rooms with pillows and then the smash rooms, and then we could have those, like those phone booths you could just scream in. Shari Teigman 26:57  And then a nap room for all of the exhausted rage.Lesley Logan 27:01  Yes, oh my god, this is like this all. It could just be a fucking space, and people could just be members.Shari Teigman 27:07  Yes, I love this. Every month there's a new way to let it go.Lesley Logan 27:12  I'm in. I interviewed this guy who, like, created these booths for hospitals where, like, nurses or doctors could go in. And I think he said it was just so they could have some peace and quiet, because hospitals are really loud, and all I could think is, like, you could scream in there.Shari Teigman 27:26  I would totally. Are you telling me it's soundproof so you won't know what I'm doing in there? (inaudible)Lesley Logan 27:34  I know. Like, isn't this? I think this, in Vegas, there's a place where you can go and, like, smash things. And I'm like, you can go, like a rage.Shari Teigman 27:40  (inaudible) to one in New York. I think it's the greatest thing I've ever done in my whole life. We did it five years ago. My kids and I are still talking about it. It was so powerful, and it was very meditative. And I never felt stronger in my life. We were running in the streets afterwards, kicking garbage cans, which maybe they should have a restroom afterwards, because we were so amped up.Lesley Logan 28:01  Like, like a waiting area, like a reentry.Shari Teigman 28:05  We're gonna integrate before we let you on the streets of Brooklyn, lady, thanks.Lesley Logan 28:11  Oh, my god, I love that so much. Okay, so obviously, like, you work with these amazing Mavericks, and you do have a lot of experience, and you talk about perimenopause, is there anything that you find in the perimenopause space with women? Because that's we have a lot of and we have, you know, we have a women who are on the other side and enjoy your space, ladies, I hope you're, hope you're having a great time. We'll get this. Shari Teigman 28:30  We're coming as fast as we can.Lesley Logan 28:33  But is there, are there signs and symptoms that people are ignoring? Because I think, like everyone pays attention to the medical ones, the hot flashes or dryness, or my whatever, but like, what about like, the emotional? And that's one of the things I think I tried. There's these, these things that come out in our personalities.Shari Teigman 28:50  I think it's that. It's those days you feel like Jekyll and Hyde, and then you're counting your cycle, and you're wondering, it's not physical, it's the emotional, shorter fuse. Care about less things, because sometimes we're more emotional and other times we're equal amounts of completely numb. So when you feel yourself numbing out, notice when you feel yourself raging about something you didn't care about before. Or I know for me, the lack of control when a brain fog comes in, I'm obviously creative and very cerebral and very verbal, and when I can't remember my name or remember how to say the word pink, I get terrified. I thought I had dementia. I didn't know this was a thing. I was I something's wrong with me, so noticing when you just don't feel like yourself, like I remember when I was pregnant with my first son, I was 24, what the hell was I doing? But okay, I was 24 shouldn't have been allowed to cross the street by myself, and I didn't lose him. He's great. We were figuring things out as we go. But we have these books What to Expect When You're Expecting. Never read them. If you don't have the symptoms that week you think something's wrong, and the last time I checked a woman's body, you and I could be next to each other. We won't have anything that's the same. Why the hell would I follow someone else's blueprint for life, pregnancy, for business, for relationships? I don't want blueprints. I want tear away sheets where I can make it up and then throw it out when I'm done. So if you feel something that isn't you and you're not sure how you feel about it, because some of us like that, all of a sudden I care less or that I can't remember every detail about some gossip someone told me that I don't not interested in. I kind of like that it blows out. So when I started noticing the difference, because I was scared, I only paid attention to the bad things. But when I found out I wasn't dying, I blessedly, didn't have dementia, I'm just lucky enough to graduate to the next video game of mother of womanhood, yay. And the new monsters are coming. I tried to look at, what are the good things? And I do that with all the FemGevity women is, what do you like in the midst of it that I can't juggle as much as I used to? So, I used to be queen multitasker, and I can't do it anymore, and it's okay, and it's actually really nice for my nervous system not to be the master of all at all times, like, I don't have that valve anymore, I can enjoy that, that when I want to be present, I can actually feel more present, because I can't be on as much as I used to be. I care less about a lot of things, so I will speak out for myself, not as much as I'd like to, but much more than I used to, because I can't keep it in anymore. It just comes out of my mouth, like, who, who said that? I would never used to say that. So look at the pros and cons of this. If we're on this roller coaster, instead of just gripping the bar, maybe we could put our hands up once in a while. Maybe we can enjoy the view from at the top of it before we drop. So what are the things that if you could let go of that you've never been able to your whole life? What if this is the opportunity to loosen some of the glue, move some of those joints and let it out anyway, in the wash, because it's going so we don't have to hold everything and new hobbies, things that I haven't made the time for, that my brain can use as new instead of I used to be good at this, and I'm not anymore. What else do I want to try? So I travel a lot for work, so I'm in London for a month, New York for a month, alternating. So I try to let my brain be a different version of me, wherever I am, because I'm jet lagged and exhausted, even if I didn't go anywhere. So it's like, okay, which version is going to be me? So like, I'm in London now, when I go home, I saw a three hour DJ class. I'm not a musician. I know nothing about it, but my brain wants something new to chew on, instead of all the mistakes that I've made and all the things that I can't remember and where did I put my keys? I'm going to go use it for something fun. If there's space in there, because I can't remember anything, I might as well put something good in there. So I think it's the permission to let it flow out of you, good and bad at the same time, and just say you're moving anyway. So you know, when you move house, like, while it's emotional and sad, you find shit you didn't even know was there. So the piles for donation and the clearing out of the 14 mugs you got at someone's Bar Mitzvah that you don't need. Like, it's a great time to let stuff go. We don't have to pack it all and bring it to the next place. So I think if you look at it as a time of decluttering and re-deciding those mental symptoms can be less scary. It's not, oh, I'm gone. No, that version of me doesn't want to be here anymore, because if it did, I'd find a way to keep her.Lesley Logan 33:22  Yeah, yeah. Oh, okay. I'm obsessed with you and all this. And there is the woman who's listening going, okay, well, easy, easy for you to say, you know what? I mean, like, what do you what do you say to the person who's like, kind of, and I'm sure you've met them, they kind of fight to to hold, I mean, we already talked about this, fighting to hold on to the shoes.Shari Teigman 33:42  (inaudible) I am her, so I was the biggest train wreck in this of anybody. I've got two kids in their 20s. My mom, who was my best friend, passed away a year and a half ago. I work internationally, so I never know what time zone I'm in, and then perimenopause hits, and I'm 4'11" and gained about 45 pounds overnight, so I looked like a little blueberry. I didn't like I don't know what. Everything changed at once. And I'm a fighter. The psychiatrist told me I'm scrappy. I still have that personality trait. I don't go down easily. I don't surrender easily, which is why I'm really good at what I do, because I know the resistance. If 17 years ago, me met me now, I would cross the street. I would never go anywhere near me, because I didn't want the help. I didn't think anything was wrong. I couldn't handle the silence of my own mind. I was in survival mode. So like I get it, I want everyone to know they're looking and listening at a version of two women. I don't know your backstory, but I know you do the work. Who do the work? Which means there was a reason we started the work. You're seeing an evolved version of us. I mean, if you want the old me, I'm good, I'll tell you. And you people say to me, why do you tell everyone everything like so they don't put me on some imaginary pedestal. I'm crazier than you. I'm ragier here than you. I have more mood swings than you. I. Work with people, and I don't like them so much most of the time. I love souls. I don't like all the people-y stuffs like, I'm friendly, and then I'm not. I'm an introvert, and then I'm an extrovert. I'm on stage dancing, then I don't want to talk to anyone like I am the whole kaleidoscope. So for all the women thinking, oh, but you've got it figured out, I made it up as I go along, and I make it up every day, and people pay me a lot of money to help them make it up also. So if we make it playful and we make it funny, it's easier to untangle, it's easier to get out of our shackles, because everyone's making it up. Lesley Logan 35:33  Yeah? Well, that's the thing, right? Like, that's the thing you like, discover along your entrepreneurial journey. I'm like, I'm in a room with all these people who are making all this time, like, oh, you just bought ads and (inaudible).Shari Teigman 35:46  And you're crying in the bathroom too, while I wanted to take a selfie with you because I thought you were a guru, I'd rather hug you in the bathroom crying. This is even better. Lesley Logan 35:52  Yeah, yeah. And it's, it's really, it's so true, right? Like, because, like, we're on social media, and people can be like, the the typewriter troll, who's like, oh, easy. It's like, and I have just come to the place where I'm like, I really do like, this phase I'm in. I'm like, no, I was homeless 10 years ago, and I've worked my ass off to do my dream job. (inaudible) Yeah, yeah. So I've worked my ass off. And so you might think I'm this, but I'm gonna tell you right now, I deserve everything that I have right now because I work for it. So don't take that from me and.Shari Teigman 36:16  Go (inaudible) your mother's basement and (inaudible) someone else.Lesley Logan 36:26  Exactly. So, but, like, it's so fun. Like, I'm like, wow, the 10 years ago version be like, oh my god. People think I'm this. Shari Teigman 36:34  An imposter. Yeah, no, I am fully me. Sorry everyone. Lesley Logan 36:37  Yeah, but I do. I'm with you. Like, I also think that a lot of people we do have, we have put on imaginary pedestals, have told us their traumas and their stories, and we only we are like, this is this? You are the Mecca that I need to be, and I'm gonna, I'm gonna do all the things. And so I think it's really easy for us to just forget that stuff. And I appreciate your honesty. And I also think thank you for sharing like for everyone listening, I hope you heard like, you just have to kind of get started and get to know every single day. You can't wait until you feel ready. You're not gonna feel ready. I'm sure, I'm sure Shari's never felt, I don't feel ready. Shari Teigman 37:12  I don't feel ready even when I am ready because I wouldn't even ask myself that question, well, we're doing this then, aren't we?Lesley Logan 37:18  Yeah, yeah. It's true. Yeah. It's so true. Because, like, the one time I I said, okay, people, it was many years ago, but the first time I was teaching like 85 people, and all these people had come to this, the first time this event was happening. So, like, I was so, like, I felt blessed and honored and excited to be invited to this, the inaugural of this thing. And I'm looking at all these people who've, like, wanted to take class with me, and they know what they're doing. And then I'm looking at this front this front row of people who just wanted to support me, but they've never done anything. And I'm like, oh my God. I have people who don't know what they're doing. I have people who have this expectation of me that I don't even know what it is. And my husband was micing me, and I'm like, is the mic on? And he's like, no. And I'm like, I'm actually, like, really nervous, right? Like, I don't think I can do this. Shari Teigman 38:01  I don't even ask if the mic's on. I'm like, I'm gonna ship myself, and it'll be 600 people waiting, and I don't want to go, who gave me this microphone? Who thinks I can do this? And then 20 seconds later, I'm on stage, arm flapping like nothing happened. Like, bring all of it with us. If you weren't scared, you wouldn't have missed the whole thing.Lesley Logan 38:19  Yeah, well, and also, and that's just exactly it. And he just like at me, and he just said, how is this different than what you already do? And I was just like, oh, that's right, thank you. Thank you for the reminder that, like it's, I'm fine, but I think, like it's, it's so important that you all hear like we're every person you put on a pedestal. You hear their story, you're like, oh my god, I'm so inspired. They wake up every day and have to figure out who they are that day, like they all do. Shari Teigman 38:44  The panic in our stomach some days and the anxiety. And I'm not wishing anyone stuff they don't have, but I want you to know everyone has their version of this, and it's not, oh, you're so brave. I didn't have a choice, so I got brave. And some days I'm not brave and but unfortunately, I'm a naturally happy, sad person, so like, I navigate this who are we going to be today? I want to be happy, but I feel sad, but I am happy, but I'm also sad. I stopped trying to pick one or the other. I'm both. I love when I'm on a podcast and like BJ Fogg's sister Linda is a friend of mine. We were in a mastermind together years ago. Lesley Logan 39:20  She lives, she lives in my town. Shari Teigman 39:21  Linda, you're kidding me. I love she's amazing. How funny. What a small world. That's crazy, like I watched the Linda's and the BJs of the world, and it's brilliant, and it's all very organized, and it's strategic, and it makes sense. And then you've got me, who is complete creative chaos. It's the only way I know how to function. You either love it or I terrify you. I'm fine with both. I can't, not going to change. I've tried. This is who I am, and I'll be on a podcast big audience, and they're like so Shari, what are your rituals every morning? And I burst out laughing, because I'm not going to lie to anyone which day, which mood, which temperature. What's it like outside? What am I wearing? I don't know. I wake up every morning I decide what I want to feel. I'll start with a feeling I want connection today. So yes, my days are crazy and scheduled, and I'm blessed to have a very busy coaching practice, and I run a department for a company in a country, in another country like I don't have a lot of flexibility in my time, and I still have to lead with what I need. Otherwise, no one else will get anything from me, and it took me a long time to not go into my own performance mode to help everyone else with their performance. What? I stepped into the same step for wife game that I was in my marriage. Climbed out of that, and I'm like, oh, coach world, green juice, yoga pants, alignment, words, what am I wearing? It's all lovely. If it works for you, that's when the Maverick was born. It's either going to be my way or I can't do it. Stop trying to pick up everyone else's way of fitting into your own life. It won't fit you. So again, it's that curiosity, it's that playfulness, it's the bad mood and good mood mixed together. Then you're being honest.Lesley Logan 40:54  Yeah, it's true. I am. I have three hours every morning for a morning routine, and the very start of my morning routine is the same. I get into a cold plunge. I read three books that are like daily things that I'm hopeful that something sticks, and then I go for a walk. And then after the walk, it's like, okay, what do I want to do? Do I want to do Pilates? Do I want to do my shake plate? Do I want to do my red light? Do I want to have breakfast now or breakfast later? And it has to go with what I'm feeling, which is why I gave myself three hours to do that because I, like you, I, well, I just discovered I have ADHD, which is its own fun thing, to discover perimenopausal. And then you're just like, oh, I'm the one they need to I thought my husband had ADHD. No, I do. And then it's like, wait a minute. So I'm overwhelmed because of the ADHD and. Shari Teigman 41:47  All of it, yeah. Lesley Logan 41:49  Just like, What do you mean? I can't, like, I'm also freaking out about the typing of the fingers because I, like, I just thought that I just had sensory integration disorder. So it's just you have to, excuse me, excuse me. I just wasn't diagnosed as a child and and here we are and now I get to know myself and perimenopause. But I think, like, I love that you share that, because I think that there's a world where you can be in the yoga pants with the green juice and the alignment words, and if it does, yes, and if it doesn't work for you. You can be like Shari and I and you can ask yourself how you want to feel, and give yourself the time to feel that. And I think that that's brilliant, yeah. Shari Teigman 42:27  And then have your green juice, or take a nap or rage or sleep or meditate like it's all wonderful, but none of these things are going to save you from yourself till you know yourself.Lesley Logan 42:34  Yeah, oh my god.Shari Teigman 42:34  It doesn't work. I tried it.Lesley Logan 42:34  I'm obsessed with you. We're gonna take a brief break and find out how people can find you, follow you, work with you, and your Be It Action Items. Lesley Logan 42:44  All right, Shari, where do you hang out? Where will this journal be when it's ready? Where can they stalk you?Shari Teigman 42:55  So I hang out on Instagram. I am there. I am loud. Sometimes I'm consistent. This is my consistency. I'm gone for a week, and then you'll see me 14 stories later. It just depends on the mood. When the mood strikes and the ideas come, the journal will be out, I'm hoping in February, which is extremely exciting. It's being designed now by a chaotic designer, which is perfect for me. And I love making new friends so they can come and come say hi to me on Instagram. It's Shari Teigman. You'll see me with my crazy glasses. As I'm known for a variety of glasses, it only happened because I'm on Zoom all day long, and I get very tired of looking at my face, so I needed to mix it up so that I wouldn't be bored. So I'm saying hi.Lesley Logan 43:39  I just needed some magic to look at. There were signs that I had ADHD. I'm like, let's put stars on your hands.Shari Teigman 43:44  I wouldn't have known it, right? I don't know where it came from. So I'm there. This is what I'm like all the time. I love when someone gets on a call with me, like a sales call, like, oh my god, you're exactly like you are online. Who else could I be? This is enough trouble to maintain you think I'm gonna have another personality for someone else? So I'm exactly like this. No one else answers my messages. I love meeting new people. I'd love to hear what you got from the podcast, what you're working on, what's your Maverick? What do you want to say out loud that you won't say to anyone else, like, I'm here to witness it. Come and play.Lesley Logan 44:17  Gosh. Okay, you have really given us so much already, but we do like our bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps at the end. What do you have for us?Shari Teigman 44:25  So I actually felt long and hard about this, which you should feel special, Lesley. Lesley Logan 44:29  I do. I actually really do. Shari Teigman 44:30  (inaudible) about anything, so I'll think about it and then I'll forget it. So it's not a want to, it's just in and out. So I think, based upon everything we talked about, an easy action step to live this is it's a hard one to say out loud, but it's going to punch everyone in the face, which is why I like it. Clean up the internal contradictions, and it's as simple as you're saying you want a bigger life, but you keep making micro choices. You're lying to your nervous system. You're answering an older version of yourself. You have to understand that the identity that you want for the life that you want is going to require aligned actions to that. So it's as simple as I say, I want to do Pilates every day, and yet I find myself laying on the couch. Pilates isn't happening. I did it today. I am tired from jet lag. I'm a yoga person. I love it, and I haven't done it so I could tell you, I love yoga, but I haven't done it in six weeks. I didn't realize till I said, when's the last time I took my mat out? Oh my god, I would have told you I did it a few days ago. Perimenopausal brain, I thought I did. So, telling ourselves the truth and cleaning up the internal contradictions makes us stop looking for answers from the outside of like, how come I just can't do it because you're not telling yourself the truth. So if I choose to lay on the couch, maybe I needed it that day. Maybe I didn't realize that that's what I wanted. Like, if I decide to stay on the couch, I do it intentionally. If I decide to do the yoga I don't check my phone in between, like, choose whatever it is intentionally and clean up those internal contradictions. The questions you ask will be much more clear and much more honest, and then you'll get to some answers.Lesley Logan 46:07  It is a good punch in the face, and I really like it. Shari Teigman 46:09  I punch myself in the face with it too. I'm like, oh god, if I say it out loud, I then have to do it.Lesley Logan 46:17  I it's so true, and it's really it's really funny. We get smart like, then I'll just keep it to myself, but.Shari Teigman 46:23  Not gonna unleash that one. One night, violent knocking shook the cabin, triggering an overwhelming sense of dread. When they stepped outside, they came face to face with a massive, muscular figure covered in reddish-brown hair, standing well over 10 feet tall. At the same time, it seemed another presence had entered the cabin itself, breaking through the door.Fearing for their lives, Daniel and his father fled to their skiff as strange chirping, clicking, and popping sounds echoed around them. Tonight's guest, Donna Copas, is of Shawnee descent and her spirit name is “White Wolf Woman.” Donna was featured on Episodes 480 and 488 and on those shows she talked about the many experiences she's had with the Sasquatch that live on and around her 300-acre farm, in Southeastern Ohio. Her father used to call them “The Watchers” and that's what Donna calls them to this day. There are many Watchers that Donna sees and interacts with, around her property, but the one she has the most affinity for is on she calls Grandfather. You see, Grandfather is an extremely old Sasquatch that used to watch over her father. Now that Donna's father has passed on, Grandfather watches over her. A couple of weeks ago, Donna had a terrifying experience with a rogue Sasquatch that moved into the area. The night it happened, Grandfather and another Sasquatch held the rogue Sasquatch at bay, giving Donna time to flee the area and get to safety.
