STORY 3: New principals named at Gwin Oaks Elementary and Jordan Middle School Two Gwinnett schools are getting new leaders, the district announced last week. At its Oct. 16 meeting, the Gwinnett County Board of Education approved Wendy C. McDonald as the new principal of Gwin Oaks Elementary, replacing Dr. Craig Barlow, who’s retiring. McDonald, currently an assistant principal at Trickum Middle, started her career in Louisiana before joining GCPS in 2005. She’s got degrees in political science, early childhood education, and literacy—all from UGA. Over at Jordan Middle, Alex “Hunter” McRae will take the reins from Melissa M. Miller, who’s moving to Bay Creek Middle. McRae, a GCPS veteran since 2000, has a background in music education and leadership. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: Georgia Department of Education recognizes five Gwinnett schools on 2025 Distinguished and Reward Schools list Big news for Gwinnett schools! Jackson Elementary, Mountain Park Elementary, Paul Duke STEM High, and Trip Elementary have been named 2025 Distinguished Schools by the Georgia Department of Education. What does that mean? They’re in the top 5% of Title I schools statewide, based on ELA and math scores. Pretty impressive, right? And there’s more—Arcado Elementary snagged the 2025 Title I Reward School honor, recognizing the top 5% of schools making the biggest improvements over two years. Each school gets a certificate, a flag, and a shot at a national award. STORY 5: Contested mayoral races top ballots in three cities This fall’s municipal elections are heating up, especially in three cities with contested mayoral races. While most ballots focus on city council seats, Loganville, Braselton, and Sugar Hill voters have some big decisions to make. In Loganville, it’s an open race—Mayor Skip Baliles is retiring. Voters will choose between City Councilman Branden Whitfield and local business owner John Soesbe to take the reins. Braselton’s Mayor Kurt Ward is up against two challengers: Michael Cronic, a former school board chair, and Brandon Reed, founder of ReeDesign MFG. Over in Sugar Hill, Mayor Brandon Hembree faces watchdog Amber Chambers in his first re-election bid. Meanwhile, Dacula, Grayson, and Norcross mayors are cruising to re-election unopposed. STORY 6: Lawrenceville City Council races come ahead of big annexation vote Lawrenceville’s city council races are in the spotlight this year—and not just because it’s the county seat. There’s also a big annexation vote looming in May that could add 19,000 new residents to the city. The leaders elected in November? They’ll be the ones managing that growth if it happens. Incumbents Austin Thompson (Post 3) and Marlene Taylor Crawford (Post 4) are both seeking re-election, but they’ve got challengers. Thompson faces former FOX 5 reporter Randy Travis, while Crawford is up against Gwinnett Sheriff’s Office Major Bryant Harris. Thompson, an engineer and small business consultant, is focused on economic growth, affordable housing, and making Lawrenceville a “city of the future.” He’s all-in on the annexation, saying it’ll bring character and opportunity to the city. Travis, meanwhile, is leaning on his decades of local visibility and says he’ll focus on traffic, taxes, and expanding the city’s tax base without burdening current residents. He’s also committed to explaining the annexation’s benefits to those in the proposed area. In the Post 4 race, Crawford, a school counselor and longtime community advocate, is pushing for equity across all neighborhoods—no more blight in one area and prosperity in another. She supports the annexation but stresses the need to expand services thoughtfully. Harris, with a deep background in law enforcement, is prioritizing safety, youth programs, and traffic solutions. He’s for the annexation too but says the city must ensure new residents get the same quality of services current ones enjoy. With so much at stake, these races are ones to watch. STORY 7: Gwinnett Counselor named Georgia School Counselor of the Year Crews Middle School’s Shayla Thompson just got some well-deserved applause—she’s been named Georgia School Counselor of the Year by the Georgia School Counselor Association. “I’m beyond grateful,” Thompson said. “This isn’t just about me—it’s about the incredible leaders, colleagues, and students who’ve supported me every step of the way. I couldn’t do this without them.” The surprise announcement came with flowers, a banner, and a visit from GSCA President Gabrielle Brundidge. David Belford lives on a 22-acre property that is forested and mountainous, in West Virginia. He's had two Sasquatch sightings and both of them happened while he was on his property. He's also a team member of the WV Case Bigfoot Collective. That's a Sasquatch investigation team that an investigator named Les O'Dell created. Dave has been into Bigfooting for 10 years or more. What sparked his interest in Sasquatch was a documentary he saw that featured Dr. Jeffery Meldrum. When Dave had his first sighting, in June of last year, he was taking his dog, Ted, out at 3 AM. After taking Ted out, Dave randomly glanced up to a hillside that's visible from his backyard and was shocked by what he saw. Bryan is an avid kayaker and camper who lives in Central Iowa. Bryan spends as much of his free time as possible enjoying the great outdoors. Unfortunately, he had an experience, in May or June of 2016, that tarnished his love of being in the great outdoors. The group was approaching a place in the river that could be dangerous for novice kayakers, so Bryan and his good friend, Mark, decided to paddle ahead so they could stand on a sandbar that would allow them to watch the novices navigate that dangerous stretch of the river. Before Bryan and Mark made it to that sandbar, however, a rock the size of a softball hit the water inches from Mark's kayak. Thomas Shay is the founder of the Northern Kentucky Bigfoot Research Group. Tom has been investigating the Sasquatch phenomenon since 1987. That's when he had his first Sasquatch-related experience. You see, in 1987, Tom was heading to see his girlfriend, in Carlton, Kentucky, on US 36, when he had his first sighting. It was 85 degrees out, that day, so Tom was surprised when he saw what he, at first, thought was a man in a fur coat, on the side of the highway. As he got closer, he slowed down to a very slow speed and slowly went past the subject. After creeping by the subject, he felt like he didn't get a good enough look at it, so he turned his car around, parked it on the side of the road, and got out so he could follow the subject down into a field. About a month after seeing that movie, during a big snowstorm, something happened one morning that completely set the hook in them, with regards to their interest in the topic. The storm had dropped about 28 inches of snow on the area where Tim and Eric lived, in Western Massachusetts, and when the looked out their window that morning, they saw a horde of people in their driveway. There were Bigfoot investigators, news reporters, and other people out there who were focused on a trail of big tracks that led across their property. It turned out to be a hoax that a kid in their area had been responsible, but the damage was already done. Tim and Eric couldn't get enough of the Bigfoot topic. What happens when two seasoned hunters head deep into the north Georgia mountains looking for a problem bear—and stumble onto something they can't explain? This story has been buried for more than forty years. Now, for the first time, one of the only two men who lived through it is ready to talk about what really happened in the fall of 1983.It all started in a quiet corner of north Georgia where dogs began disappearing, cattle were turning up dead, and the locals were convinced a rogue bear was to blame. But not everything lined up. There were strange howls echoing through the valleys at night, and tracks that looked almost like bear prints—but not quite. Even the livestock were acting nervous in ways old ranchers couldn't make sense of. That's when two lifelong friends decided enough was enough. They packed up their rifles and gear and hiked into the backcountry determined to find whatever was responsible. What they discovered on that October hunt would change them forever—and bind them to a secret they carried for decades. This story comes straight from one of those men. He's in his seventies now, and after his hunting partner passed away in 2019, he decided it was finally time to talk. He's not looking for fame or attention—he just wants to tell the truth before it dies with him.As he tells it, the deeper they pushed into the forest, the stranger things became. A deer carcass was wedged high in a tree—nearly twenty feet up—with its neck twisted completely backward. Enormous footprints appeared in soft mud, too wide and too deep to belong to any known animal. Trees were bent and splintered, clawed and gouged as if something massive had moved through. Tonight's guest, Kathleen Tedder, had her first Sasquatch sighting when she was 4 years old and over the years, since then, she's had sightings in 7 different states. You see, when Kathy was 4 years old, her family lived in Alaska. One day, back then, she was sitting at the kitchen table, looking out the Dutch door, on the back wall of their kitchen. Suddenly, she saw what her 4-year-old mind identified as being a man-bear eating cherries, from a cherry tree outside. The “man-bear” was brown and about 8 feet tall. Being as young as Kathy was, she decided that her best course of action would be to run out to him and give him a hug. So, she got up and started to run outside to do that. She had made it 3 steps out the door when, suddenly, her father grabbed her by the seat of her pants and pulled her back inside. As her father was pulling her back inside the house, the “man-bear” did something she'll never forget. What it did made a lasting impact on Kathy that she's still moved by to this day.
