Don't Stop Believing: A Reflection on Hebrews 12 A Sermon by Pastor Richard Sfameni, Lead Pastor at Victory Church in Providence, RI. The Power and Blessing of God's Word The Word of God stands as a timeless, life-changing force. It is not just information, but revelation—a source of power and blessing. For the believer, Scripture isn't just a traditional book; it is the living, inspired guide that shapes faith and anchors hope. The Christian Race: Endurance Over Speed Using the imagery from Hebrews 12, believers are reminded that following Jesus is not a sprint but a marathon. Life in Christ requires perseverance and a willingness to continue through battles, spiritual attacks, and moments of doubt. The encouragement is plain: Don't stop believing. “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith...” Faith as a Marathon The Christian journey is long and demanding, requiring perseverance, not a short burst of effort. Life brings seasons of spiritual honeymoon and also testing, but through faith, every hardship can be overcome. The Examples of Faith: A “Cloud of Witnesses” Hebrews 12 begins with a reminder that we are “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,” referring to the faith heroes listed in Hebrews 11. These individuals—Abraham, Moses, Samson, Gideon, and others—demonstrated faith amidst suffering, deprivation, and daunting obstacles. Their stories assure us: If they made it, we can too. Their testimonies cheer us on, encouraging us to keep running and believing despite all circumstances. Believers today have more resources—the full Bible, stories, and testimonies—than those early heroes did, yet the call is the same: keep the faith. Laying Aside Every Weight The Hindrances to Running the Race The passage urges us to “lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles.” Like a runner shedding unnecessary gear, believers must let go of anything holding them back from wholeheartedly following Christ. Practical Weights to Lay Aside: Weight Description Laziness Neglecting spiritual discipline or commitments Lack of Commitment Merely being involved rather than truly devoted Distractions Allowing social media or worldly interests to replace time with God's Word Unforgiveness Holding onto grudges, which hinders spiritual progress Critical Spirit Being harshly judgmental towards others within the faith community Bitterness Allowing wounds to fester into deep resentment These are not just bad habits, but actual spiritual weights that slow our progress and can keep us from finishing strong. The passage highlights personal responsibility: We must choose to lay these aside. The Sin That So Easily Entangles: Unbelief The passage distinguishes between “weights” (various hindrances) and “the sin”—which, in context, is unbelief. Unbelief is not a minor issue to God; it reflects a lack of trust in His promises and a turning away from His truth. The greatest obstacle to enduring faith is not hardship, but losing faith in the faithfulness of God. “See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.” (Hebrews 3) Enduring with Encouragement Like athletes, we don't compete against each other, but run our own race, in our own lane. The victory is not comparison, but completion. The faithful who went before us testify: hardships can be overcome, faith can triumph, and God remains true. Grace to Overcome Lay aside every weight: Make choices that honor God over comfort or distraction. Persevere through unbelief: Trust in God's Word and His purposes, even when you cannot see the end. Closing Encouragement Let these truths settle in your heart: You are not running alone. The “crowd of witnesses” testifies to God's faithfulness through all generations. It's too soon to quit. Don't let weights or unbelief keep you from the victory promised to all who finish. The prize is eternal. While runners in ancient games received crowns that faded, your reward in Christ is everlasting. Stay encouraged. Don't stop believing. Lay aside whatever holds you back, and run with endurance—the Author and Finisher, Jesus, is waiting at the finish line.
Running the race of grace: Start with the cross, stay fueled by prayer, crash through quitting points. When you hit the wall, surrender to God. Proclaim His goodness to others. Fix your eyes on Jesus—He'll lead you home. Don't focus on failures; focus on the Finisher.
In celebration of CRC's 35th anniversary, Pastor Richard Hilton delivered a heartfelt and powerful message titled “I Have You in My Heart,” centered on Philippians 1:3–7. Reflecting on the deep bond Paul shared with the church at Philippi, Pastor Hilton reminded us that ministry is more than moments—it's about meaningful relationships built through financial support, friendship, and fellowship. He emphasized that we're called to do life together: remembering each other with gratitude, praying with joy, and walking in deep, limitless love. When someone is in your heart, you set your affection on them, you share vision with them, and you sacrifice for their destiny. With joy woven throughout the message—just as it flows through Philippians—Pastor Hilton closed with the reminder that God is a Finisher, faithful to complete the good work He began in us. This message marked not just an anniversary but a reaffirmation of our calling to love deeply, dream boldly, and serve one another wholeheartedly.

In this electric post-race episode of Trail Society, Corrine Malcolm sits down with co-host and freshly minted Western States Top Ten finisher Keely Henninger to relive the highs, lows, and hard-earned triumphs of this year's race. Keely reflects on her fourth go at WSER, this time arriving with a deeply personal approach, hard-won confidence, and zero obligations to perform for a brand—just herself. From a ferocious women's field to a historic showing by international athletes, Corrine and Keely break down everything that made this year's race unforgettable, including the dramatic chase to crack the top ten. They dive into Keely's evolving mindset, her take on the lead women going out hot, how it felt to go “on the hunt” post-Foresthill, and how finally nailing her fueling strategy played a pivotal role. The episode touches on gear freedom, team dynamics, and what it's like to finish with joy instead of just survival. With questions from listeners and big-picture reflections, this conversation is a celebration of grit, growth, and the power of running on your own terms.

Titus 3:5, "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy." 1. HE Salvation begins with God. The glorious subject of this verse is none other than the sovereign Lord of heaven and earth. "He"--the eternal, omnipotent, all-wise, and perfectly holy God--has taken the initiative. It was not man who sought God, but God who sought man. Left to ourselves, we were "foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved" (Titus 3:3), utterly without hope. But God, in His infinite mercy and loving-kindness, moved toward us. This great act of salvation is not the product of man's desire, decision, or deeds--but of God's own purpose and grace. "Salvation comes from the Lord" (Jonah 2:9). He alone is the Author and Finisher of our faith. What a humbling truth: the One most offended by our sin, is the very One who provides the remedy. 2. SAVED What a word! Not helped. Not improved. Not rehabilitated. But saved! This is a strong word that speaks of deliverance from danger and destruction. In the biblical sense, it is a rescue from the wrath of God, from the penalty of sin, from eternal damnation. Salvation is no minor adjustment to our behavior or character--it is a radical deliverance from guilt, corruption, and condemnation. And what is the cause? "Not because of righteous things we had done." No amount of good works, religious rituals, or moral efforts could ever earn this salvation. It comes because of His mercy. Grace flows from mercy. Mercy is God's heart of compassion toward those in misery and ruin, and grace is the action that flows from it--redeeming, restoring, and raising us from death to life. To be saved, is to be made a new creation in Christ

Acts chapter 3 tells the story of a man who had been lame from birth, carried daily to the temple gate called Beautiful to beg for alms. This gate, symbolic of Jesus as the Door, is a reminder that all access to God's presence and blessing comes through Christ. Peter and John, filled with power, love, courage, authority, and faith, encountered this man not just with sympathy, but with a readiness to impart what they had received from Jesus. They didn't have silver or gold, but they had something far greater: the authority to speak healing in Jesus' name. When Peter declared, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk,” the man was instantly healed—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. The miracle was more than a restoration of legs; it was a restoration of hope, dignity, and joy. The man didn't just walk—he leaped, praising God, a sign that God's healing goes deeper than the surface. For forty years, this man's story had been written by limitation and disappointment, but in a moment, the Author of faith rewrote his narrative. The leap was a visible sign of an inward transformation, a release from years of depression and defeat. This theme of leaping is echoed in Luke 1, when Mary, carrying Jesus, visits Elizabeth. At Mary's greeting, the baby John leaped in Elizabeth's womb, filled with joy at the presence of the Messiah—even when Jesus was just the size of a peanut. No matter how tight or confining our circumstances, the presence of Jesus brings the power to leap, to praise, and to hope again. The enemy may try to write a story of confusion and despair over our lives, but Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, has the final word. Whatever chapter you're in, it's not the end—God is still writing, and He's restoring your leap, your joy, and your future.

Harriet Frost is a force of energy, endurance, and entrepreneurial grit. From completing the notorious Arc of Attrition 100-mile ultra twice, to directing multiple trail races, to co-founding a menstrual cup company focused on sustainable period care for athletes — Harriet is redefining what it means to pursue hard things, in business and on the trail. In this episode, Harriet shares her journey from growing up in Cornwall to discovering a love of endurance sport later in life — despite hating running at first. With no formal coaching, she's built her own training strategy based on experience, discipline, and gut instinct — and it's taken her to the finish lines of some of the UK's most brutal ultra events. We also dive into the founding of Sea+Flo, a period care company created by women, for women, aiming to empower people to better understand and manage their menstrual health during sport. This week we bring 3 great conversation from the great Cal-Lab Association meeting that happened in February during Lab Day Chicago. First up is someone that has to put up with Elvis on a regular basis at Derby Dental Lab (https://www.derbydental.com/), Liam Johns. Liam talks about growing up with a technician father, becoming the removable manager at a young age, and how digital excites him for the future of dental technology. Then we chat with two gentlemen from Wiand Dental Lab (https://www.wiandlab.com/), Tom Wiand and Scott Lowrey. Tom tells the story of starting the lab in the early 90s, organically growing through the years, and keeping up with technology. Scott talks about going from selling burs to selling restorations 10 years ago. Now he does education, chairside support, and helps the lab succeed. We wrap up the episode with former player for the Pittsburg Steelers, Matt Cushing. Once done, a buddy asked if he would do sales for his lab. Not knowing anything about teeth, it wasn't long before Matt found a passion for the industry and opened First Choice Dental Lab (https://www.firstchoicelab.com/) and is now (17 years later) a lab that has acquired other labs, grew to full service, and has a satellite lab in another state. Don't miss this incredible webinar with Tanya Little, a dentist from beautiful Vancouver, Canada. We would like to invite you to a special webinar that she's hosting with Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) and LMT (https://lmtmag.com/) on Wednesday, May 7th, titled "Reflections from a Denturist: 20 Years of Crafting Dentures!". In this program, she will review the incredible history of removables with Ivoclar and focus on the new and exciting evolution based print resin and of course, the PM7. Her goal is to provide you with several key takeaways that will allow you to work smarter and not harder. You can join on May 7th by registering at https://lmtmag.com/webinars/reflections-from-a-denturist-20-years-of-crafting-dentures Are you a dental lab in need of more talent to improve your bottom line and keep production on schedule? Are you a dental tech with great skills but feel you're being limited at your current lab? Well, the answer is here and this is precisely why WIN WIN GO (https://www.winwingo.com/) was created. The dental lab and dental tech community needed a place where labs and technicians can meet, talk about their needs and connect in ways that foster a win win outcome. As a tech. If you're ready to make a change, thinking about moving in the next year or just curious what's out there, sign up today. It's totally free. As a lab, you might be feeling the frustration of paying the big employment site so much and getting so few tech candidates. We understand they don't much care about our industry. WINWINGO.com is simply the best place for lab techs and lab owners to actively engage in creating their ideal future. WINWINGO.com, how dental techs find paradise. Special Guests: Matt Cushing, Liam Johns, Scott Lowrey , and Tom Wiand CDT.

Well, hello there! Hope you are doing well, growing in grace, enjoying the Lord's love, spending time with Him daily, and living a Kingdom focused life. I'm thankful you're listening today. This is episode number 207 of The Burt (Not Ernie) Show, featured on the Edifi app, iHeart radio, Spotify, Apple podcasts, and pretty much all the places. Let's jump into today's episode. The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises Devotional now available on Audible If you were, say, looking at the last week of Jesus' life, those days leading up to the crucifixion - if you were looking from the outside, those events leading would leave you with an entirely different impression than they do for us who know Jesus, who love Him and live for Him. In Him we live and move and have our being, it says in Acts 17:28. When you know that for yourself in a personal way, you look at the events between Palm Sunday and Resurrection Sunday with thankfulness, gratitude, humility, awe, and hope for what comes next. When you look at it from the outside in, it probably doesn't create those same emotions. It looks like a series of terribly unfortunate events from that perspective. Jesus' arrest, trial, crucifixion - those are gut wrenching moments in history and may be incredibly difficult to make sense out of for someone looking at the life of Jesus for the first time. The week seems like it ended in utter hopelessness, like those three and a half years of the Lord's life were all for naught. And that would be discouraging, if you only saw it from that perspective, from the outside looking in. But when you are in Christ, you look at things from a heavenly perspective. You are seated with Him in the heavenly places, is says in Ephesians 2:6, and that means we don't see things from the world's point of view. We see everything in a different light, and not like the old Bangles song from the ‘80s (yes, I am Gen X and yes, the 1980's produced a vast volume of songs, enough that there are references available for almost everything…and I wish the word of God was as easy to memorize as all those song lyrics from my teenage years were). When we only see something in part, only have access or clarity on bits and pieces of a situation, it can easily feel pretty discouraging. Let me reiterate that: when we only see in part, we can easily become discouraged. It makes sense that the last week of Jesus' life could be discouraging to someone looking at the life of Jesus from the outside. But doesn't it also make sense that you and I can also become discouraged about the things we can only see in part? And since we are not yet with the Lord, we do see in part. We don't have the whole picture. But what we do have is actually far better; we have Jesus Himself, we have the Holy Spirit indwelling us, we have the promise of heaven with Him, we are forgiven, we have access to the Father via prayer directly, at any time, because the veil was torn at Jesus death and thanks to His resurrection, death and hell are defeated for us. I say all that to remind you that when you start feeling discouraged about something, I hope you can pause and remember that just because you can't see it all with total clarity, that does not mean things are hopeless. Sunday is coming, and for the Christian, Sunday always, always comes, into every scenario and situation and problem and pitfall. Always. How can I say that and be so certain that it is true, no matter what is happening in your life? Because when you know Jesus, when your name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life, in the end you get eternity with Him. And that is, for you, the joy of Resurrection morning, the empty tomb, the defeat of death for you, and eternal hope. We who know the Lord understand that Jesus accomplished the Father's will, and we know absolutely that the tomb is empty, there is no body of Jesus entombed in Israel. No grave holds Him. That tomb? It was empty 2000 years ago, it's empty right now, and it will remain empty for time and all eternity. The deed is done. The goose is cooked. Satan truly is a defeated foe, as Revelation chapter 20 so powerfully and beautifully teaches. The seeming series of unfortunate events was in actuality a series of events leading to the greatest moment to ever occur. There's nothing else like it! You and I know this to be true. So, can we also trust that God is doing His will - His good and perfect and pleasing will - on behalf of His dearly loved children, even in the areas of our lives that are painful? It takes some guts, some faith, and often some honest prayer sessions with the Lord to really believe this with every fiber of our being. And if you need to wrestle with God on a topic that's especially raw and real, please do that. Wrestle in prayer with Him. Ask Him those hard questions. Cry if you need to. But don't just cry to your small group, to your friends, to your spouse. Cry out to your ABBA Father, and be still before Him long enough to experience the love and encouragement and peace that He wants to give you right in the midst of your mess. You are not alone. He has promised never to leave you or forsake you. So please don't live like you're alone, like you've been forsaken. God is not a liar. Do not allow your stress to lead you to a place where your faith is so nonexistent, your trust so shrunken, that you are basically accusing God of being a liar to you. Remember, it is impossible fo rGod to lie, it says that in Hebrews chapter 6, verse 18. Never live in a way that accuses God of something that it is impossible for Him to do. He has not and He will not and He is not in this moment right now today lying to you. He can't and He won't. Please do not forget that! Let's look at Mark, chapter 4. Verses 24 and 25. I'm going to read from the New Living Translation. Then He added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given - and you will receive even more. To those who listen to My teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.” How are you at listening? It's not easy to be a good listener in our always on our phones day and age. It takes a whole lot more effort than it used to. But it's important to train yourself to be a good listener. In say your marriage, your parenting, at work, and all the more so when it comes to what Jesus has said via the Bible. Are you paying close attention to what He has said? Are you listening closely, so that you can understand and then be given even more? Are you listening to His teaching? Not just during a sermon once a week, but really listening when you open your Bible and read it for yourself? And are you doing that daily? If not, can you start reading your Bible every day? Not to be a legalist, because that is a dead-end road. But because you want to do what Jesus said to do here in Mark chapter 4 - reading your Bible because you want to pay close attention, to listen to Him closely, and to be given more understanding. The inverse is that what little understanding you have will be taken away from you if you don't pay close attention. That's not a good thing. And so, let's just not do things that way. As we think about Resurrection Sunday, we almost certainly think about the fact that Jesus finished His work on the cross. It is a finished work. Nothing more needs to be done or added to it. It is finished, that's what He said from the cross, and He meant what He said and said what He meant. Remember, Mark 4? We are paying close attention to what He tells us. And so, we believe that it is finished, His work on the cross. And since we believe that, we also live without trying to add to the already finished work. The work we have to do is the work of believing according to John 6:29. We can, and really I feel like we must, we must trust the Lord who paid it all to give us eternal life is the same Lord who is at work in our lives right here and now, today, completing the good work He began in us. Philippians 1:6 tells us to be confident that He will complete the good work He started in us. He is a finisher, our God is. Jesus finished it all on the cross and that sure doesn't indicate that He'll leave you flapping out in the wind, unfinished. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith, it says in Hebrews 12:2. The Author, so He started it and He is also continuing to write it out for us, day by day, and He will finish it. Anything Jesus finishes is done to perfection. That's how you need to look at your faith. Jesus authored it, He is still authoring it every single moment of every single day, and He will finish it to perfection. How do we know this is true? Because of the cross; His finished work on the cross proves that Jesus finishes everything He sets His hand to with perfection. Always. Every single time. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. Your life and times are in His hands. Those are good, good hands to be in. Jesus isn't Allstate, He doesn't raise your rates when you make a claim. You are rooted and established in Him. He's got you, and if you don't feel like you can see the end of this ordeal right now, just remember that He's got you. He has engraved you on the palms of His hands, and it is impossible for Him to forget you. See Isaiah 49:16. This Resurrection Sunday, I hope you rejoice and declare with total trust in Him that He is risen! He is risen, indeed! Lord bless you today, and every day! And may His mercy, grace and peace be yours in abundance. (And one little announcement - my devotional The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises is available on Audible as an audiobook. I'll put that link in the show notes.) I'll see you next time. Bye bye!
